Pop culture is full of wizened older figures (usually male) who guide the hero on their journey. Obi-Wan and Yoda. Dumbledore. Mr. Miyagi. We adore these characters in our media, yet in the real world it’s sometimes easy to overlook the contributions of older, experienced people.
Kate Edwards wants to change that. She’s the former executive director of the International Game Developers Association (Igda), as well as a consultant who uses her background as a geographer to assist studios with political and cultural content in their projects. She believes ageism is a rampant problem in the video game industry, one that’s being largely ignored.
“While sexism in the industry has garnered tremendous attention, and rightfully so, in the wake of Gamergate and other incidents, the response to ageism has typically been tepid by comparison,” she said.

Though Kevin Williamson is the Scream King, the debut of his new series Stalker was more of a whimper. And I'm not just talking about the sounds coming from the victims of the show's eponymous creeps. There was something literally and viscerally bloodless about the premiere, which was touted by CBS as "the scariest drama to ever air" on TV and which I have to admit was one of my most anticipated series of the 2014–2015 season. The pilot didn't have quite the lingering chill it could or should have... nor did it have the narrative fire its multiple gasoline-drenched set pieces hoped to convey.

The John Edwards trial got underway Monday (April 23) in Greensboro, N.C. and legal analysts are already saying the face of the trial has changed - it's not so much the United States v. John Edwards as it is John Edwards v. Andrew Young.
Young was an aide on Edwards campaign who was one of the key players in the cover-up of the Rielle Hunter affair and subsequent birth of her daughter Quinn, who is Edwards' daughter. The defense is claiming Young pocketed most of the $725,000 used in the cover-up instead of Edwards using campaign donations strictly to hide the affair from the press, as the prosecution is claiming.
The prosecution is also alleging that Edwards asked Young to claim he (Young) was the actual father of Rielle's baby, while the defense claims this was Young's idea...

Kate Edwards, partner of brand-funded content company Quail Content reports from Mipcom 2010.
For the first time ever, Mipcom put together a program about the rise of brand-funded content. This day’s program coincided with the announcement that @Radical Media was being bought (60 percent) by Fremantle worldwide – this only further proves the relevance of such a convergence model both in today’s clutter interruption advertising market and the TV production space.
The branded-content seminars were full and the panels put together were representative of some of the sector’s Big players – again only proving the merit of this form of content creation and moving further toward legitimising it. The panel included Peter Tortorici – GroupM Entertainment UK, Doug Scott Ogilvy Entertainment Us, Robert Friedman @Radical Media Us, Domonique Delport – Haavas Intl France, Cameron Death NBC Digital Studios, Marcus Vinton – Publicis Entertainment UK.
The key out-take of their mission in the brand-funded revolution...

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced that it has bestowed 76 grants of $100,000 each to scientists who have come up with unconventional ways to destroy infectious diseases in the developing world. Below are some of our favorites.
1. A Drink to Keep Malaria at Bay
What if immunity to malaria was as simple as downing a chocolate-y drink every day? Steven Maranz of Weill Medical College thinks the key to lifelong malaria immunity might just lie in providing kids with high levels of flavanols--compounds found in chocolate, green tea, and shea nuts--via a beverage.
2. HIV Immunity via a Ring
For many diseases--diarrhea, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and pneumonia among them--mucosal surfaces are the point of entry. That's why Emmanuel Ho of the University of Utah is trying to attack HIV infections where they start. The researcher's intra-vaginal ring is designed to slowly release the HIV peptide gp120 and the cytokine Il-12, creating...

London -- U.K. indie Metrodome Distribution is brushing up on its Shakespeare, taking U.K., Irish, Australian and New Zealand ancillary rights to Trevor Nunn's stage-to-screen adaptation of "King Lear," starring Ian McKellen.
The deal was hammered out among Metrodome's Peter Urie, Sara Frain and Kate Edwards and Richard Price and Nigel Whitehouse for Rpta Ltd.
Metrodome negotiated the multiterritory deal in order to work closely with Rialto Distribution, who will be releasing the film in Australia and New Zealand.
Recorded in high-definition at Pinewood Studios after a sellout West End run at the New London Theatre, "Lear" is directed by Nunn and Chris Hunt.
King Lear will be released on DVD by Metrodome in the U.K. in October, then on Blu-ray in December. Channel 4 is planning to air the production on Christmas Day here. It will be released in Australia and New Zealand in early 2009.
