It’s been almost a year since Yellowstone aired its midseason finale — and a dramatic year at that, what with Paramount Network pulling the plug on its biggest hit and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes slamming the brakes on the production of the series’ last episodes. But Thursday, the network finally was able to announce when the show would go on: It will return for what promises to be an epic sendoff in November 2024.

It’s no secret that “Yellowstone” is one of those once-in-a-decade types of shows that has everyone talking around the virtual water coolers. And while fans eagerly await what we now know to be the final episodes of the show’s critically-acclaimed run, “Yellowstone” has created an itch in viewers that just needs to be scratched now, and we can do that via similar type shows.
And sure, we could suggest other super popular series like “Ozark” and “Succession” that also include messy families involved with shady dealings, but odds are you’ve seen them already. And if not, you definitely should whether you like “Yellowstone” or not. These are just the facts. We could also recommend the two “Yellowstone” prequel series “1884” and “1923,” but that’s kind of a given if you’re already a fan of the original. But speaking of, fans who prefer those two offerings over...

It took guts to re-air any part of Yellowstone on CBS.
Yellowstone Season 1 Episode 1 was not the sanitized Westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. This series tells it like it is, and the coarse language is an important part of the Western's character. So is the violence.
Nothing in this series is gratuitous, but it is graphic -- and originally made for cable, where there are looser standards about what can and cannot be said.
The introduction to the Duttons felt more like a movie than a television series. The cinematography was breathtaking, but I was struck by the symbolism of the opening scene and how well it foreshadowed Lee's death.
It's not fair, this life. I wish I could give you better. The best I can offer you is peace.
John Dutton Permalink: It's not fair, this life. I wish I could give you better. The best I can offer you is peace.

The first episode of “Yellowstone” made its broadcast debut on CBS Sunday night with only minor cuts. The network had the hit series in its hip pocket, which has run for five seasons, as a handy solution to fill in for shows that have been put on hold due to the ongoing dual Hollywood strikes.
The Taylor Sheridan-created drama, which launched a whole western franchise for Paramount, had free rein on streaming and cable to include swearing and nudity. Those were both trimmed for network sensibilities.
The trademark violence, however, remained. That includes series star Kevin Costner putting a bullet through the head of his severely injured horse to end its suffering in the first few minutes of the episode.
A CBS insider did not comment on specific edits, but did tell TheWrap, “We are preserving the integrity of the original episodes with minor edits to meet our CBS Broadcast Standards.

Kevin Costner’s exit from “Yellowstone” will reportedly result in the death of his character, wealthy rancher John Dutton.
And when Dutton does shuffle off this mortal coil, Costner will have control over the manner in which that happens.
That’s the report coming from Puck, which claims that Costner’s “Yellowstone” contract contains a “moral death” clause, added during one of his contract negotiations.

Yellowstone fans were shocked when it was announced several months ago that the current incarnation of the series would be coming to an end as Kevin Costner had decided to depart. However, it wasn’t entirely a done deal, as the actor was still willing to return for the second half of the fifth season and perhaps even more. But according to Puck (via TVLine), Kevin Costner had a number of demands, including the right to review, approve, and potentially veto every Yellowstone script. That obviously didn’t sit well with series co-creator Taylor Sheridan, who has written or co-written every episode.
In addition to veto power over the Yellowstone scripts, Kevin Costner also wanted more money and a reduced shooting schedule. The reduced schedule was to give him enough time to shoot his Western epic, Horizon. It remains to be seen what will happen to Costner’s character in Yellowstone,...

John Dutton’s Yellowstone fate was reportedly sealed when star Kevin Costner added a script veto power to his list of contract demands amid the ongoing dispute between him and series creator Taylor Sheridan. According to Puck, an entertainment industry newsletter, Costner and Sheridan met via phone in July to discuss the possibility of Costner’s character not being killed off in Season 5B, which will be the series’ final chapter. Costner is said to have expressed interest in staying on the series through a potential sixth and seventh season, but he had a list of demands that Sheridan couldn’t get behind. Sheridan completed the Yellowstone Season 5B scripts before the WGA writers’ strike began on May 2, 2023 (Sheridan writes every script for the series on his own and has since the show began). Per Puck, Sheridan was open to the idea of revisiting the 5B scripts after the writers...

The drama behind-the-scenes on “Yellowstone” is in danger of overshadowing the drama in the series itself, at this rate. A new report from Puck News indicates that over the summer, Costner reportedly asked for veto power over Taylor Sheridan-penned “Yellowstone” scripts before agreeing to do more episodes of the series.
The demand came this summer, after Paramount officially announced that “Yellowstone” would end after Season 5, and that a new Taylor Sheridan series would take its place. Costner’s representatives then reached out to Paramount to discuss bringing back the John Dutton character for the second half of season 5 and possibly beyond, which led to a call between Sheridan and Costner. Sheridan assumed Costner would not be back for the end of Season 5, but said he’d be willing to re-write scripts to give the character a satisfying ending.

With the final episodes of Yellowstone still a long way off, a new report about how much creative control Kevin Costner had in the Paramount Network drama has come to light.
According to Puck News, Costner had a "moral death" provision as part of his contract.
This reportedly meant that the actor had a say in how John Dutton can and cannot be killed off, assuming the show travels that avenue.
While there have been reports that the final episodes have yet to be written, Puck claims that episodes for the back half of Yellowstone Season 5 had been written but didn't include the show's leading man.
Costner, whose availability has been reported as a big concern for the series, was allegedly interested in returning for the rest of the season -- and beyond.
The outlet states that Sheridan was interested in keeping Costner around but that it all fell apart...

Yellowstone fans are hearing more about Kevin Costner’s exit from the Paramount Network hit — straight from the John Dutton portrayer himself. Costner, 68, spoke out about his Yellowstone departure at a child support hearing in Santa Barbara, California, on Friday, September 1, according to People. “It’s a little disappointing that [it’s] the #1 show on TV [and] I’m not participating,” Costner said during the hearing, which is a part of his ongoing divorce from Christine Baumgartner. The actor said that a “long, hard-fought negotiation” led to him leaving Yellowstone to focus on writing, directing, producing, and starring in Horizon: An American Saga, slated to be a four-part film series. Paramount Network Costner told the court that after the decision was made to split Yellowstone Season 5 into two parts, he “changed” his schedule. “That’s a big deal in this world,” he added, per People. Then came production issues, according to Costner’s recounting.

“Yellowstone” star Kevin Costner is threatening to sue the show’s producers over money he believes he’s still owed from the series. The actor spoke publicly on Friday for the first time about his falling out with the hit Paramount Network series, while on the stand in a Santa Barbara courtroom.
Costner discussed the “Yellowstone” acrimony during a child support hearing, part of his divorce proceedings from wife Christine Baumgartner. As described by People magazine and other outlets that attended the hearings, Costner — whose impending exit from “Yellowstone” was previously reported in February — expressed frustration with not being able to continue on the series.
At the time, it was suggested that Costner would potentially exit the series (on which he has played John Dutton since it launched in 2018) due to his shooting schedule, with Costner being available for fewer days as the show has progressed. But on Friday, Costner...

One of the things fans love about "Yellowstone" is the drama. Sure, the action and fighting and intrigue are excellent, and they certainly keep folks coming back week to week — but there's nothing like good drama that truly works. "Yellowstone" has that in spades, and the reason why it hits so hard lies in its characters.
Wes Bentley's Jamie is one of the best sources of drama within the show, especially considering his rough past with his sister Beth, not to mention his own personal demons to reckon with as a Dutton. Governor Dutton is swearing in. The Paramount Network released the trailer for season five of Yellowstone Sept. 29, and it confirms what season four left hanging: that John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who only ran for governor to spite his adopted son Jamie (Wes Bentley), will now lead the state of Montana. "I, John Dutton, do solemnly swear to uphold the constitution of the state of Montana," he swears in the trailer, hand on the Bible as intense music plays in the background. "Against all enemies, foreign and domestic." But it's not all smooth sailing once John takes office. He promptly fires all previous employees of the governor's office, tapping his...

In the world of "Yellowstone," power has a price — and it seems the series will double down on that concept in season 5. John Dutton and his family expand their reach to the whole of Montana in the new trailer for the upcoming season, which was released on Thursday, September 29.
In the sneak peek, Dutton — played by the brooding and intense Kevin Costner — gets sworn in as the governor of Montana, but clearly his family still has dirty dealings going on behind the scenes. In fact, it appears that Dutton's ambitions are still in play. During the trailer, he even goes as far as to fire his entire cabinet and replace them with his family -- namely his only daughter, Beth, as his chief of staff.
Per the official synopsis for "Yellowstone," the show "follows the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton. The Duttons control the largest contiguous ranch in the U.

Gov. John Dutton, is that you?
In the newest trailer for season 5 of Yellowstone, Kevin Costner’s alter-ego puts his hand on the Bible and promises to uphold the Montana constitution against all enemies, especially those pesky domestic ones. That means John definitely followed through with a suggestion by Lynelle Perry (Wendy Moniz) last season to take over as the state’s governor.
His first move in office? He fires the old staff and hires Beth (Kelly Reilly) as his chief of staff before signing some mysterious declaration that Jamie (Wes Bentley) warns “is a declaration of war.”
“We’re already at war,” John replies ominously.
There’s also a new Dutton foe played by Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), who set her sights on destroying Beth, and a messy-haired vixen named Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) who likes to make a lot of money. Other new cast members include Kylie Rogers,...

In the first trailer for “Yellowstone” Season 5, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is now officially a triple threat: Cowboy, gangster and Montana governor. But as the new season’s tagline says, “power comes at a price,” and that price appears to be either a literal or metaphorical war with the Dutton family’s many, many enemies.
The series returns to Paramount Network on Nov. 13. See the trailer at the top of the page now.
Right off the bat, the trailer reminds us that “Yellowstone” runs on nonstop menace with John taking his oath while getting sworn into office. When he gets to the part where he says “enemies, both foreign and domestic,” the camera makes a point of lingering on three of them: His estranged son Jamie (Wes Bently); his rival, occasional ally-of-convenience, and Broken Rock Tribal Chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham); and Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver), the CEO of Market Equities.

It’s not a spoiler to reveal that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) becomes governor of Montana in season five of Yellowstone.
In fact, it’s the opening scene of the trailer for the coming season of the Paramount Network hit, which premieres Nov. 13. John announced his candidacy and secured the endorsement of the outgoing governor (Wendy Moniz) during the show’s fourth season — seemingly to spite Jamie (Wes Bentley), who was set to run for the post himself. The campaign, it appears, was a successful one.
John’s new job does not mean, however, that Yellowstone is turning into The West Wing: Montana. The remainder of the trailer (watch it below) highlights the infighting, power plays and family drama for which the show is known and loved by more viewers than any series on cable. Standout moments include John firing most of the...

Yellowstone's Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) are in marital bliss. Ahead of the upcoming fifth season, the cast of the Paramount Network's dramatic Western is teasing how the couple's marriage will change their dynamic—physically and emotionally. Though Rip has always spent more than his fair share of time on the ranch as John's (Kevin Costner) right-hand man, now, he'll be a permanent fixture. "He's moved into the main house, which is somewhere he's never really been that comfortable," Hauser said to Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Sept. 27. According to multiple sources, it doesn’t look like we’ll be catching a glimpse of “Yellowstone” season 5 anytime soon. Delays look to be inevitable at this point after a recent interview with Yellowstone star, Gil Birmingham.
Birmingham told E! News, “We haven’t even gotten the scripts yet.”
Hopefully, this changes real soon, or we can expect more bad news to follow.
His “Under the Banner of Heaven” co-star, Andrew Garfield, had this to say about Birmingham’s upcoming role in “Yellowstone” season 5.
“I know he’s about to do the next season,” Garfield said, “but he’s not allowed to speak. On pain of death, he will not reveal anything about the new season.”
Paramount has already delayed releases of “Yellowstone” in the past due to scheduling changes. In fact, Paramount pushed back the premiere for season 4 of “Yellowstone” to November 2021. Therefore, fans shouldn’t be surprised by this troubling announcement.
