To call Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis “detailed” is an understatement. The Warner Bros. musical biopic, which stars Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, tracks Presley’s life and career from his beginnings as an average boy from Tupelo, Mississippi, with a beautiful voice and great looks to one of the most important figures in American pop culture history.
Like Luhrmann’s previous films, including the best picture-nominated musical Moulin Rouge!, Elvis is an epic, kaleidoscopic project and a tribute to the title character’s legacy, told primarily from the perspective of his infamous manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). It’s also a mashup of cultural references, from Elvis’ own music to contemporary songs by the likes of Doja Cat, Presley’s various performance eras and his fabulous — if fatal — excess once he became one of the most famous men in the world.

After landing the coveted title role in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama Elvis, Austin Butler barely slept for two years.

It would seem Austin Butler has used witchcraft to summon the very soul of Elvis to possess him in this larger than life biopic.
Biopics have been on our screen as long as the big screen has been around. From films like Joan of Arc (1900), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Amadeus (1984), to the modern burst of musical biopics like Ray (2004), Walk the Line (2005), and Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). The biopic seems to never go away and you can always expect them to be coming around near awards season, normally picking up a few acting awards. They never seem to stick around long in the audience’s conscious, yet they keep getting made,...

Chicago – Director Baz Luhrman’s “Elvis” has plenty of suspicious minds, but precious little mystery as his trademark excess fails to breathe new life into the tired legacy of the King. No amount of montages, quick cuts, and odd music choices can obscure the fact that we don’t see anything here that even the casual Elvis fan doesn’t already know.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The film tells the story of the rise and fall of Elvis (Austin Butler) through the eyes of his personal Svengali, manager, and exploiter-in-chief Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Hanks plays Parker as a grotesque force of evil who is so slimy and menacing he’s practically a Bond villain. His inscrutable accent comes and goes. He’s cagey about his background. He shouts his unscrupulous ways from the mountaintops, and brags liberally about the “snow jobs” he pulls on everyone in sight.
“Elvis” opens in theaters everywhere on June 25th.

In the pantheon of great biographical film epics, the new offering from director Baz Luhrmann chronicling the life and rise to superstardom of a young man from Tupelo, Mississippi named Elvis Aaron Presley (as played by Austin Butler), simply titled Elvis, may rank up amongst the greatest ever made for now, and possibly for some time to come.
What is refreshing about Luhrmann’s film is that in portraying the complicated relationship that Presley had with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) as told through the eyes of said manager, the film refrains from becoming a sad tale of the decline of a once great artist, but is instead a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions that properly treats Elvis as the tragic, yet enigmatic hero that he was. When actual footage of Elvis is used to close the film, it serves less as a shocking moment of the man’s deteriorating health,...

Director Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic “Elvis” dazzled at Cannes Film Festival, earning a 12-minute standing ovation. Will audiences respond with the same, sustained enthusiasm?
According to early estimates, the Warner Bros. film is aiming to collect 30 million from 3,900 venues in its domestic box office debut over the weekend. That’s a solid start for a drama catering to adult audiences. But given the film’s 85 million production budget, which does not include the many millions spent on promoting the movie, “Elvis” will have to keep singing in theaters throughout the summer to justify its price tag.
Despite two buzzy new releases — “Elvis,” as well as Universal and Blumhouse’s creepy thriller “The Black Phone” — there’s a chance “Top Gun: Maverick” overtakes them both and returns to No. 1 on box office charts in its fifth weekend of release. Should that come true, it would be a remarkable accomplishment at...

“It doesn’t matter if you do 10 stupid things so long as you do one smart one,” Colonel Tom Parker advises us near the start of Baz Luhrmann’s utterly deranged musical biopic about the King of Rock & Roll, but even a ratio that forgiving would still leave “Elvis” roughly 370 “smart ones” short. If only this 159-minute eyesore — — were gracious enough to be as short in any other respect.
Luhrmann may be one of the most irrepressible maximalists the movies have ever known, and his new opus is perhaps the most visually anarchic Hollywood film since the Wachowskis’ 2008 “Speed Racer.” But it’s hard to find even ironic enjoyment in something this high on its own supply; something much less interested in how its namesake broke the rules than it is in how its director does, and something tirelessly incapable of finding any meaningful overlap between the two.

Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley gave a stellar review of the new film “Elvis,” praising actor Austin Butler in his lead role as the King of Rock and Roll.
After a private screening, Presley applauded the storytelling and creativity of director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film, “Elvis.” The Warner Bros. film stars Butler in the title role, with Tom Hanks as Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley.
“This story is about Elvis and Colonel Parker’s relationship,” Presley wrote on Twitter. “Austin Butler, who player Elvis is outstanding. … Bravo to him… he knew he had big shoes to fill. He was extremely nervous playing this part.”
Presley also praised Hanks in his role of Parker, especially for portraying the “two sides” of him: “What a character he was,” she continued.

As Variety has previously reported, “Elvis” Baz Luhrmann’s drama about the rock-and-roll legend Elvis Presley, starring Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Tom Hanks, will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Cannes confirmed the premiere on Tuesday, adding that Luhrmann, Hanks and Butler will attend the premiere screening alongside Olivia DeJonge (“The Visit”), who plays Priscilla Presley in the biopic. They also released a new image of Butler as Elvis.
The film is set for North American release on June 24 through Warner Bros. It will be released by Warner in much of the rest of the world – including France – on June 22.
Luhrmann previously opened the French Riviera festival with “Moulin Rouge!” in 2001 and “The Great Gatsby” in 2013.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The biopic starring Austin Butler in the title role will open domestically on June 24.
Luhrmann hasn’t made a film since 2013’s lavish “The Great Gatsby,” which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, and grossed over $350 million worldwide. While not exactly prolific, Luhrmann’s work is certainly distinct, and fans are curious to see the “Moulin Rouge!” director’s take on this American music icon.
Luhrmann co-wrote the screenplay for “Elvis” with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner. The ensemble cast includes Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Yola Quartey as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King, Dacre Montgomery as Steve Binder and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Jimmie Rodgers.

Elvis has entered the building. The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic starring Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was released Thursday, and the resemblance is uncanny. The trailer also confirmed that the previously untitled Warner Bros. film will be called “Elvis.”
The film explores two decades in the life of superstar Elvis Presley before his early death in 1977 at the age of 42, focusing on his complex relationship with manager Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The film follows his rise to fame from poverty and features an all-star cast including Olivia DeJonge (“The Visit”) as Elvis’ wife Priscilla, singer-songwriter Yola as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) as Jimmie Rodgers, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) as B.B. Fans of music biopics have a lot to look forward to right now. Timothée Chalamet is playing Bob Dylan in “Going Electric,” from “Walk the Line” director James Mangold. Bradley Cooper is directing and starring in “Maestro,” his take on Leonard Bernstein. And “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green is set to helm a Bob Marley biopic starring Kingsley Ben-Adir. But one of the most anticipated music films is “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film about the legendary Elvis Presley.
The idea of the flashy Australian director with a penchant for films about music taking on the showmanship-loving singer seemed like a match made in heaven for many film fans when the project was first announced in 2014. The role of Elvis Presley — which has been played in other projects by everyone from Michael Shannon to Jonathan Rhys-Meyers — was extremely coveted, with the likes of Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, and Harry Styles vying for the part.

Warner Bros’ Elvis movie from Baz Luhrmann is going a bit later, with the studio Monday pushing it from June 3, 2022 to June 24, 2022. The pic will be a pure theatrical release, not hybrid day-and-date with HBO Max, as Warner Bros pivots from its pandemic 2021 distribution plan.
Elvis’ departure from the first weekend of June leaves the frame up for grabs for another major studio’s tentpole. On its new date, Elvis squares off with Sony’s Reese Witherspoon production Where the Crawdads Sing.
The news comes following Paramount’s move of Hasbro’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts from June 24, 2022 to June 9, 2023.
Luhrmann directs, co-wrote and produces Elvis. Screenplay was co-written with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner off a story by Luhrmann and Doner.

Jack Bauer could well return to Fox.
There are currently “active creative discussions” about bringing back classic Kiefer Sutherland-fronted terrorism drama series 24 with a new take.
Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn told Deadline that there is “potential” that the show will return in some form.
“There’s still a possibility, there’s still some discussions with the producers on a take that we have yet to hear,” he said. “There [are] some active creative discussions that are happening.”
Thorn’s comments echo recent words from 24 executive producer Howard Gordon, who told Deadline in a recent interview that a new take on the series is “always percolating”. Gordon said that he loves the character but cautioned “it’s not official, sort of, until I think all the pieces come together.”

At TCA last week, Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn hinted that a new incarnation of 24 may e in the works. As Deadline reported at the time, the new concept, that has been gaining momentum, is being developed by The Resident showrunner Todd Harthan with 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV.
Following the TCA panel for the final season of Homeland today, Deadline asked former 24 executive producer/showrunner Howard Gordon, who remains involved in the franchise, about the new project.
“Fox certainly wants to do it, and we’re talking,” Gordon said, adding, “When I say talking, what it will be. The big headline being it has to be worth doing. We can’t do it to just do it. We want to find the right story. Todd Harthan who is running The Resident is working on it. I’m a friend of the court.”

24 and Prison Break are two Fox drama series that the network has been able to successfully revive with 24: Live Another Day and Season 5 of Prison Break.
But, following the mixed reaction to 24: Legacy, Fox executives and the series’ producers have been treading carefully when pursuing a potential new installment of the real-time drama.
In May, Fox opted not to go forward with two potential new 24 series it had been developing: a real-time legal thriller written by 24 executive showrunner Howard Gordon and Jeremy Doner, and a prequel that traces the origin story of CTU agent Jack Bauer, from Gordon and 24 co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran.
While the network remained open to the prequel idea, there has been a new concept that has been gaining momentum the past few months, which is being developed by The Resident showrunner Todd Harthan.

Event programming remains a target area for Fox, whether branded like 24 or original like the upcoming sci-fi drama NeXt, Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn told Deadline during TCA.
The network made a concerted effort last season to develop a new incarnation of one of its signature series, 24, by commissioning two scripts from 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV, a real-time legal thriller written by 24 executive showrunner Howard Gordon and Jeremy Doner and a prequel that traces the origin story of CTU agent Jack Bauer, from Gordon and 24 co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran.
As we reported in January, none of the projects got to pilot, with 24 producers going back to the drawing board and Fox expressing interest in cracking the prequel idea with a fresh new take. The legal thriller concept is no longer on the table, I hear.

The Rideback TV Incubator, the new inclusion-focused writers program launched in February by Dan Lin’s Rideback and Mrc, has selected its writers and mentors for the inaugural 2019 session.
The incubator, whose core mission is to creatively and financially support writers from different backgrounds as they create their own series for cable or streaming services, is an eight-month paid program aimed at TV writers who have previously been staffed on series and want to create their own dramatic show.
The goal is to create a market-ready, straight-to-series project, which if they go forward will be produced by Rideback with financing and other support by Mrc, which is providing funding for the program. Fox had been developing two potential new 24 series: a real-time legal thriller written by 24 executive showrunner Howard Gordon and Jeremy Doner and a prequel that traces the origin story of CTU agent Jack Bauer, from Gordon and 24 co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran.
Of the two, the legal drama progressed beyond the initial script and went through further development and reworking. But in the end, neither project made it to a pilot order this season.
During the TCA executive session Wednesday, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier called it “a blessing” to have the 24 “legacy and a responsibility to bring it back.”
He acknowledged that the network is “not announcing anything.” He expressed admiration for the creative auspices behind 24, from Imagine TV and 20th TV, but he stressed that “when we get it right,” the network takes bringing the franchise back “very seriously.”
The 24 producers now are expected to go back to the drawing board.

It’s hard to do “24” without Kiefer Sutherland as the leading man, but Fox keeps trying — with Sutherland’s help.
And this time they are doubling down on their efforts, with two projects in development — a Jack Bauer prequel series and a legal thriller spinoff. While Sutherland may not return as Jack Bauer for either, he’s backing both as a producer. And the franchise star is so into the latter project that he’s actually getting in on the brainstorming.
“I can tell you he loves the idea of the legal thriller [spin-off],” entertainment president of Fox Broadcasting, Michael Thorn, told TheWrap during the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday — just a few hours after the network announced that project was in development. “And he’s been pitching ideas directly to [longtime ’24’ showrunner] Howard Gordon.”

The “24” franchise isn’t dead yet. In fact, Jack Bauer is alive and kicking and looking younger than ever. Or that’s the plan, anyway.
At the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman offered more details about the “24” prequel series as reported earlier this week. Showrunner Howard Gordon and original series co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran are working on a new iteration that will focus on a young Jack Bauer. The series is still only in the development phase.
“The method of telling a show set in real-time is unique to ’24,’ and we still think it has a lot of power and a lot of legs,” said Newman. “Really, ever since the show went off the air, we’ve talked about how do you reimagine ’24.’ The times are fraught now, these are emotional times. A month after IndieWire revealed that original “24” executive producers Howard Gordon, Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran were mapping out a new version of the real-time series in the vein of the original — set inside the world of counterintelligence — now the plot of their script can be revealed: It’s a prequel that follows a young Jack Bauer as he enters the world of the CTU.
The “24” prequel would allow the producers to bring back the beloved character without original star Kiefer Sutherland having to once again suit up as Bauer, a role that had become physically demanding after nine seasons and a reunion limited series. The new “24” prequel also wouldn’t be 24 episodes, Gordon told IndieWire last month, but would be a shorter order, much like the recent “24: Legacy” spinoff.

During Fox’s upfront press call in May, Fox TV Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden revealed that former 24 executive showrunner Howard Gordon is working with 24 co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran on a possible new incarnation of the real-time drama. Walden would not elaborate on what the new premise is but noted that “we are very excited about where the show would go.”
I have learned that where the potential new installment would go is the past. I hear the new 24 series, now in active development at 20th TV and Imagine TV, will serve as a prequel to the original 2001 series. Now that the “24” band of creators are back together, they’re busy at work on developing two new versions of the show simultaneously for Fox — either of which could ultimately make it on the air.
Original “24” executive producers Howard Gordon, Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran are back together and mapping out a new version of the show that Gordon said would be in the vein of the original series.
That’s in addition to a previously announced variation on the “24” real-time format, but set in the legal arena. Gordon is working on the “24” law show with Jeremy Doner (“The Killing”) — but Surnow and Cochran (the original co-creators of “24”) may ultimately be involved in that one too. 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV continue to be involved as the franchise’s respective studio and production company.

I loved the original 24 series with Keifer Sutherland, but the last attempt, 24: Legacy just didn't click with me or anyone else. Afterall, it was canceled. Fox is obviously not interested in giving up on the franchise. As for what the series will be about, this is the description from the report:
The potential new 24 series centers on a female prosecutor who uncovers a legal conspiracy and has to work against the clock to save a death row inmate facing imminent execution whom she had helped prosecute but may be innocent. I hear...

The clock is ticking down toward a possible return of “24.” Fox has given a script commitment to a female-led drama series in its “24” franchise. The latest iteration would maintain the real-time conceit but would be set in the realm of criminal justice. Howard Gordon, an executive producer on the original series, is writing the script with Jeremy Doner (“The Killing”) for the project from 20th Century Fox and Imagine Television. Also Read: 'Magnum Pi' Reboot Lands at CBS Executive producing are Gordon and Imagine’s Brian Grazer, who was another Ep on “24.” The original “24” starred Kiefer Sutherland as terrorist-despising Jack Bauer.

Fox's new 24 revival series will have a female lead, and mix its urgent spilt-screen action with legal drama...
Back in August, it became clear that Fox had finally decided they'd wrung all they could from the original 24 story premise. However, they had some plans brewing to keep the basic concept intact as they moved forward with a brand new reinvention of the show.

Fox chairman Dana Walden and president David Madden told Deadline that the network was in the early stages of hashing out a version of 24 that runs along a more "anthological storytelling" vein, ditching the Jack Bauer-esque narrative of terrorist threats and CTU espionage, and doing something entirely different with the key real-time aspect the series is known for. The first big-budget Russian blockbuster, WWII epic Stalingrad, was an absolutely stunning visual experience, and when it became the highest-grossing film in Russian cinematic history, it seemed pretty clear that we hadn’t heard the last of its director, Fedor Bondarchuk. Now, it appears that Warner Bros. has recruited the helmer to direct its big-budget Greek epic Odysseus, which aims to turn the classic tale transcribed in Homer’s The Odyssey into an action-packed spectacle.
Bondarchuk, the son of Oscar-winning helmer Sergei Bondarchuk (who received the Best Foreign Film Oscar for his movie War and Peace back in 1968), made Stalingrad for around $30 million, and the flick went on to gross $66 million, setting records in Russia. It was also the first Russian movie to be shot in IMAX 3D. Despite Stalingrad featuring a huge amount of battle sequences, Bondarchuk kept the budget low by staging everything without the use of green screen or extensive special effects,...
