Ultra Music Festival once again took over Miami’s Bayfront Park last weekend, delivering a solid three days of non-stop music curated by a host of world renowned DJs and performers. Sporting a lineup with a little bit of something for everybody, Ultra 2017 was definitely another memorable entry for the long running festival brand.
The main stage was graced by all the usual superstar DJs, with sets from Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Zedd, Major Lazer, DJ Snake, Tiësto, Steve Aoki, Afrojack, and Axwell /\ Ingrosso, to name a handful.
The production on the main stage was impressive to say the least, with a dazzling array of Led visuals, water features and pyrotechnics so lit I had to check and make sure my eyebrows were still in tact at one point. The custom stage design Ultra uses on the mainstage is the festival’s calling card by now, but it’s...

After its tenth anniversary, there’s no denying that Movement has lived up to its name. The Detroit music festival once again succeeded in drawing the techno elite from every corner of the globe to celebrate the genre in the city of its birthplace, but this year’s edition in particular served as a special homecoming of sorts.
After all, the extra year digit was but one milestone reached by the techno community this past week. Shortly before the event took place, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declared the week of May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week. Following that, a business report presented a couple of days later at the International Music Summit in Ibiza revealed that the genre surpassed all others in Beatport downloads last year. Then, on the first day of the festival, the Movement Main Stage was headlined by none other than Kraftwerk – a group whose music tremendously...

It’s finally official: Sasha and John Digweed will reunite in September. The duo surprised attendees of Bedrock Easter at Ministry of Sound two weeks ago when Sasha joined Digweed behind the decks, and after numerous vague hints, it has been confirmed that they will perform a back-to-back set at this year’s edition of The Social Festival in England.
Sasha and Digweed became a fixture of the ’90s progressive house landscape for such performances – typically at storied nightclub Renaissance in Mansfield, England. The duo also released several albums that would come to define the era – particularly the celebrated Northern Exposure series, which some would say laid the foundation for trance.
It’s still unclear whether Sasha and Digweed will tour together past their performance at The Social Festival (which takes place on September 9th and 10th in Maidstone, England), but look out for further information as they release it to the public.

With the 2016 edition of Mysteryland USA only a couple months out, the festival’s organizers have followed up their first lineup announcement with a collection of names sure to bolster its draw substantially.
The event’s phase 2 lineup has now been revealed, and it features names that give it stronger underground credentials. In particular, artists like Art Department, Joris Voorn, Eagles & Butterflies and Hudson Mohawk give the event more appeal to fans of dance music’s more sophisticated side. Between John Digweed, Lee Burridge and Rezz, Mysteryland USA’s phase 1 lineup hadn’t alienated that crowd by any means – but its follow up only served to reinforce those themes.
That said, two months can still be quite a long time in the grand scheme of festival lineup announcements. Mysteryland USA‘s organizers might still have some tricks up their sleeves for this year’s edition, so if you’re thinking of attending,...

2016 is shaping up to be the year of reunions indeed. Sasha and John Digweed whipped the world of dance music into a frenzy last week when the former artist joined the latter onstage during his Bedrock Easter performance at Ministry of Sound, and they’ve followed up the back-to-back set with some curious new branding.

Once upon a time, the names Sasha and Digweed were nearly synonymous with progressive house. The UK DJ/producers became famous for delivering transcendental live sets at Mansfield nightclub Renaissance for roughly a decade during the genre’s heyday, until parting ways to pursue solo careers.
If you’ve followed electronic music for longer than just a passing phase, you already understand the significance of what happened last night, March 24th: During John Digweed’s performance at his Easter Bedrock party at Ministy of Sound, Sasha joined him onstage for the duo’s first back-to-back set since the 2010 edition of Ultra Music Festival.
The set kicked off shortly after Sasha’s arrival at the iconic nightclub, and a four-minute snippet of their joint performance can be seen in the YouTube player above.
It certainly was epic. Thanks @DJJohnDigweed for having me. Was so good to play together again. Been far too long.

Mysteryland USA was one of our favorite festivals of last year, as it stood out from the crowd by offering an eclectic lineup situated in a historic location. While the event will be moving from Memorial Day weekend to the second week of June this year, and opening up its gates to a younger crowd, the organizers are still looking to bring their A-game for those in attendance.
Making that very clear is the phase 1 lineup, which was released tonight. Headlined by Odesza, Skrillex and Bassnectar, Mysteryland USA has once again put together a very interesting and diverse roster of talent, bringing in support for their headliners in the form of Griz, The Chainsmokers, Tchami, Claptone, Mija, John Digweed and more.

’90s progressive house icon Sasha flew under the radar for several years, but like a lot of dance music’s elder statesmen it looks like he’s coming back for keeps. It was hard to know for sure whether his March release of “Vapourspace” was an indication of what was to come, but his latest track stands as proof that the decorated DJ/producer proper house fans know and love has returned for good.
“Ether” (notice a pattern?) is a throwback to the golden era of UK house music that still sounds holds up by today’s standards. A primal, rudimental bassline precedes echoey, sensual vocal samples that slowly build to a euphoric peak in traditional Sasha fashion. If you play the track on a solid sound system and close your eyes, you can almost imagine bobbing your head in the crowd at one of he and John Digweed’s...

John Digweed has been making people dance for longer than the youngest Ultra Music Festivals attendees have been alive. "Versus," the new project he's announcing with longtime collaborator Nick Muir seems like it's set to continue building his legacy.
The three-disc project sees Digweed, Muir and a host of other widely respected house and techno producers creating new material both together and separately. On Disc 1, Digweed mixes new productions with the likes of jozif and Marco Bailey. Disc 2 is the unmixed version of the former, and Disc 3 is simply Digweed and Muir collaborating on eight tracks of their own. "Awakening," the lead single, will be released on Sept. 9.

From Beyonce's $50 million Pepsi deal to Taylor Swift's dances with Walgreens, it's clear that American pop music has cozied up quite comfortably with big business. From rap to country to gospel, music fans can rest assured that if it's popular, it's probably already earned a corporate sponsorship.
But what happens when a genre bubbles quietly for decades before exploding in popularity over a few years? Electronic dance music has existed in American nightclubs for 30 years now, but its expansion into the popular consciousness came so swiftly that large-scale business interests -- from record labels to event planners and merchandisers -- have been caught playing catch-up.
Still, that investors have their eyes set on monetizing the dance music scene is hardly news at this point. Since its June 2012 coming out party in the New York Times, Robert F.X. Sillerman's rapidly growing Edm empire has led the charge: With a series of banner acquisitions (DayGlow,...

Instead, it went massive. The just-released Phase 2 lineup reveals Ultra will host its most diverse and thorough lineup yet this March in Miami's Bayfront Park: crowd faves like Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Dirty South are back, but the lineup also includes a slew of live acts including Snoop Dogg and Sleigh Bells.

Here’s a new trailer for Ecstasy which stars Billy Boyd who you’ll know from Lord of the Rings. He’s rather a long way from the Shire in this new movie though as you’ll see from the trailer. I’ve called it a red-band trailer in the title simply because it has the ‘C’ word written at the end of it and a split second of a sex scene but other than that, it won’t offend too much. Ecstasy is based on the book by Irvine Welsh (Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance) and will be with us April 20th.
Ecstasy stars Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd, Carlo Rota, Stephen McHattie, Alex Lifeson and is directed by Rob Heydon.
Based on Irvine Welsh’s controversial book, Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, Ecstasy is a twisted tale that explores the euphoric highs and the devastating lows of a chemical romance.

Serving as a handy rave primer for the trance and Ecstasy uninitiated, Greg Harrison's "Groove" is a heady slice of San Francisco's nightlife that is populated by colorful characters and a rich sense of milieu.
Harrison, a film and music-video editor who makes his directorial debut (the picture had its premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival), has a terrific eye and ear for capturing the underground subculture. He has supplied a group of likable personalities to go with the scene.
But instead of placing more trust in the very specific environment he has created or letting the body language and propulsive music do most of the talking, Harrison occasionally allows his characters to become just a little too self-analytical. The resulting babble is a drain on the film's ambient energy.
So, while not quite a rave, "Groove" nevertheless packs enough youthful grooviness to attract select-site partiers. It also establishes Harrison as a filmmaker with considerable promise.
It's certainly fun to watch rave disciple Ernie Steve Van Wormer) and his crew quickly descend upon an abandoned Bay Area warehouse and convert it into ground zero for a rave within a matter of hours.
Among those who have picked up the e-mail scent are Colin (Denny Kirkwood), who's planning a surprise for his girlfriend, Harmony (Mackenzie Firgens), and wants his tech-writer brother David (Hamish Linklater) to be there.
The straight-laced David reluctantly agrees, and he suddenly finds himself thrust into a strange new world of jungle and techno beats, not to mention an illicit alphabet soup of E, LSD and GHB.
Helping him through his Ecstasy high is Leyla (Lola Glaudini), a transplanted New Yorker who, like David, is stuck in a life rut. The two work out their obstacles as Ernie tries to convince a suspicious cop (Nick Offerman) that the noise and lasers are part of a small office party. Meanwhile, a nonstop lineup of guest DJs (including rave demigod John Digweed) ply their trade.
To be sure, Harrison has created an infectious environment, and his generally engaging cast of fresh faces, including Ari Gold as the on-duty dispensing biochemist, does much to make it accessible.
But all the navel-gazing, particularly from David and Leyla, tends to get in the way, making the movie seem like a Whit Stillman film ("The Last Days of Disco") minus the wit.
Fortunately, the soundtrack picks up much of the slack. The throbbing lineup of DJ-spun mixes will get even the most beat-resistant viewers into the groove.
