Filmmaking was the domain of Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese before Joe and Anthony Russo turned it into a family affair. How? The director of Taxi Driver, 81, has worked on almost every movie in which his family was involved. Catherine Scorsese, his late mother, was one of his closest collaborators and made appearances in several of her son’s films.
Her most famous role, however, is that of Mrs. DeVito (Tommy’s mother) in the Robert De Niro starrer film Goodfellas. And Scorsese once shared a cute little fact about this cameo. Having said that, even though it is unquestionably a superbly made film, one of its most memorable scenes was still largely improvised.

Indeed, the dinner scene with Catherine Scorsese is unquestionably hilarious in this biographical crime drama film, and to make the scene even better, she improvised most part of it.

10. Bill Cutting from Gangs of New York (2002)
Authoritarian, ruthless, and cunning, Daniel Day Lewis’ Bill the Butcher stole the screen in Gangs of New York every time he appeared. His presence alone was menacing enough to make people drop on their knees and pray, and his impeccable skills with the knife only added a flair of danger to the man that already embodied it.
9. Nucky Thompson from Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014)
Nucky’s silver tongue and immaculate looks made him into the most charming type of gangster: the one everyone loves. Thanks to his persuasive skills and the ability to seamlessly blend his legal and illegal businesses, Steve Buscemi’s Nucky controlled the entirety of Atlantic City with few who could — or wanted to — oppose him.
8. Frank Costello from The Departed (2006)

For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”
Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Funko Pop. Actually, that's entirely possible now, thanks to the Pop Yourself program available both in-store and online. But if you're not in the market to turn yourself into a vinyl collectible, maybe you'd like to collect the characters from one of Martin Scorsese's classic films, "GoodFellas."
Funko
Since "The Godfather" joined the roster of Funko POPs vinyl figures inspired by movies not too long ago, it only makes sense for another classic mob movie to get the same treatment. The "GoodFellas" Funko POPs give us pretty much every character that you'd want included. There's Ray Liotta as Henry Hill, before he got all coked out and paranoid, Robert De Niro as the enforcer Jimmy Conway, standing like a gentleman, and Joe Pesci as the mouthy and reckless Tommy De Vito,...

Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

The 25-year-old quarterback is fresh out of playing college ball last year and is currently the starting quarterback for his hometown team, New York Giants.
Tommy has been hitting the field as starter this season after both Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor are out for injuries.
In a recent interview, it was revealed that Tommy lives at home with his parents in his childhood home in New Jersey, which is very close to where the Giants practice and play home games.

This game should be more hyped, with both team neck and neck in the NFC East standings and looking to make a push toward the NFL playoffs in the second half of the season. Instead, you have a Dallas Cowboys team that is about where you would think they should be, in second place in the division. Then you have the New York Giants, whose season has been very forgettable to everyone associated with it. The Cowboys are big favorites at home, and this one could get ugly for the Giants quickly.

The starting quarterback for the New York Giants, Daniel Jones, tore his Acl and is out for the rest of the season.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted, “#Giants Qb Daniel Jones is, in fact, out for the season with a torn Acl, coach Brian Daboll said following today’s Mri. He’ll undergo surgery with the plan of being ready for the 2024 season.”
Keep reading to find out more…
The Giants now have only 2 healthy quarterbacks on their roster: rookie Tommy DeVito and Matt Barkley, who is on the practice squad. It’s unclear if the Giants will pursue adding another veteran to their lineup at this time.
Earlier this year, Jones signed a 4 year, $160 million contract with $92 million of that as guaranteed money.
Acl (or anterior cruciate ligament) is a tear that commonly happens to professional athletes. In general, the rehab process takes 6-8 months.

“The clouds lifted” for cinema’s future recently. At least that was how Martin Scorsese felt after he saw “TÁR,” on which he lavished praise at the New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner in early January 2023.
That kind of praise means a lot. Scorsese is not just one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: he’s one of its greatest cinephiles. In recent years, he’s become known for the movies — or, as he might say of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “theme parks” — he doesn’t enjoy. Michael Imperioli is revealing that the most difficult scenes for him to film for projects are the ones that involve violence toward women.
In an interview with The Guardian, published online Thursday, the actor noted that it was particularly hard when his Sopranos character, Christopher Moltisanti, was violent toward his fiancée Adriana La Cerva (Drea de Matteo) on the Emmy-winning series.
“The most brutal, difficult stuff for me is when Christopher had to be physically abusive with Adriana, for obvious reasons,” he explained. “On a technical level, you’re trying to be really careful so you don’t hurt the person. But having to get to that point of violence towards a woman, you have to go to some nasty places to get there.”
Imperioli added that while it can sometimes be “very immediate” to get to that headspace for a scene, other times it’s finding “something present in...

Pesci and Liotta in Goodfellas Goodfellas, 10pm, BBC2, Monday, May 29
Martin Scorsese's passion for filmmaking shows little sign of dwindling, with the 80-year-old's latest, Killers Of The Flower Moon, premiering in Cannes last week to critical acclaim. This classic from his back catalogue is adapted from the non-fiction work by Nicholas Pileggi and charts the rise and fall of two-bit wiseguy Henry Hill. It was Joe Pesci who took home the Oscar for his portrayal of Hill's loose cannon friend Tommy DeVito but this is ensemble work at its finest, with Ray Liotta perfectly cast as Hill alongside Robert De Niro as Jimmy Conway. Beyond the acting, the film thunders along at pace and features a soundtrack that's tough to beat.

Beloved by moviegoers for decades, the mafia film genre typically centers around key players that make up the world of organized crime in various contexts, locations, and cultures, with a sprinkle of family life and a generous serving of violence included in the storylines. The genre traces back to the early beginnings of film, but was popularized by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese in the 1970s and beyond.
Over the years, the mafia genre has continued to defy stereotypes and include elements from different film genres, like suspense or comedy. The latest mafia-related film, "Mafia Mamma," which hit theaters on April 14, presents a traditional look at the Italian mafia, with a refreshing, comedic tone delivered by Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. In the film, Colette's character, Kristin, unexpectedly inherits her estranged grandfather's mafia empire in Calabria, Italy, and has to assume the role of mob boss...

Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are the most famous working directors of the last several decades, but that doesn't mean that they're in competition. In fact, the two filmmakers are fans of each other's work. Spielberg is particularly fond of Scorsese's 1990 mob movie, the widely acclaimed modern classic, "Goodfellas." And who can blame him? What's not to like? But "Goodfellas" is more than just a good movie to Spielberg — it's a master class in directing.

In a missive sent around to 2022’s Oscar nominees, stars were told to “read the room” when delivering speeches at the Academy Awards this month. Translation: Get off the stage before the orchestra is forced to awkwardly play you out.
In 1943, Greer Garson set a Guinness World Record for Longest Oscars Acceptance Speech, with her address upon accepting her Best Actress award forMrs Miniver clocking in at five and a half minutes.
Garson isn’t the only winner guilty of indulgence though. Hilary Swank, Adrien Brody and Al Pacino have all ignored the 45-second limit and consequently found themselves at the receiving end of a passive aggressive “Will you wrap this up?” stare.
Some actors, however, know that not every story needs to be so long and that brevity is an undervalued quality. Franklin D Roosevelt’s adage – “Be sincere, be brief, be seated” – could very well be the tagline for this year’s ceremony.

In a missive sent around to this last year’s Oscar nominees, stars were told to “read the room” when delivering speeches at the Academy Awards this month.
Franklin D Roosevelt’s adage – “Be sincere, be brief, be seated” – could very well...

Gangsters, in general, are not the kind of people you want to land on the bad side of and the genre is as old as celluloid itself with some incredible films demonstrating just how brutal their world is. Look away from The Godfather if you’re a fan of horses (or James Caan for that matter), behold the various and frequently shocking headshots in The Departed, Casino’s torture by vise, or even the brutal double death by baseball bat in the same movie. It’s a wonder why we find these characters so fascinating but that’s just the thing — we love ‘em!
Over the last few years, the genre has seen some more intriguing installments, but among the many movies featuring gangsters, there aren’t many that can be hailed as true classics. The Irishman was an interesting if slightly flawed return to the genre for Martin Scorsese,...

This essay is one of several contributed by filmmakers and actors as part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time package.
Henry Hill, Jimmy the Gent, Tommy DeVito, Paulie, Karen, Billy Batts, the Lufthansa heist … all someone has to do is mention some of these names and I get the sudden and irresistible urge to watch Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” again. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve experienced this epic cinematic masterpiece, which includes a brilliant screenplay by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and one of cinema history’s greatest acting ensembles: De Niro, Pesci, Liotta, and some of the most memorable supporting roles ever — from Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Imperioli, Chuck Low and Tony Darrow to Catherine and Charles Scorsese … there are no background performances in “Goodfellas.”
It’s no longer a guilty pleasure to sit for 2 hours and 26 minutes, but rather a master class...

Christopher Walken is one of the most unique character actors of all time. Walken is renowned for his idiosyncratic mannerisms and has reinvented himself for audiences of many different generations. He has attracted some younger viewers with his frequent appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and Fatboy Slim's infamous "Weapon of Choice" music video.
Although Walken is largely associated with his comedic roles, he has delivered many riveting dramatic performances. At 79, Walken hasn't shown any signs that he is slowing down. He has recently found success on television with his roles as Burt Goodman on Apple TV+'s acclaimed science fiction series "Severance" and Frank Sheldon on Amazon Prime Video's crime series "The Outlaws." It was recently announced that Walken will be joining the cast of "Dune: Part Two" as Emperor Shaddam IV. It will be exciting to see Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides face off against the most fearsome antagonist in the "Dune" universe.

Joe Pesci's career has been filled with gems throughout the years. He's constantly shown off his range from his comedic turn in "My Cousin Vinny," to his fiery roles in Martin Scorsese's Casino." He even combined his comedic chops and intensity in a strange way in his role as one of the Wet Bandits in the family-friendly "Home Alone" and "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." But Pesci was never content with the evolution of his craft, and in his latest collaboration with Scorsese in "The Irishman," he plays a far more subdued crime boss than he has portrayed in the past. But it was his role in "Goodfellas" that gave Pesci is one (and only) Academy Award win.
The creative process to mold Pesci's performance as Tommy DeVito in "Goodfellas" was unique, to say the least. Casting Pesci clearly paid off as his performance not only...

We can’t wait to hear Joe Pesci say the title of his new show: The Oscar winner (GoodFellas, My Cousin Vinny) has signed on to costar in Pete Davidson’s Peacock comedy Bupkis, the streamer announced on Thursday.
Pesci will play the grandfather of Davidson’s character, joining Edie Falco, who was previously cast as Pete’s mother. The half-hour comedy is a fictionalized take on Davidson’s real life that “will combine grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the unfiltered and completely original worldview for which Pete is well known,” per the official description.

“Goodfellas” star Joe Pesci has joined Pete Davidson’s new comedy series “Bupkis” as the former “Saturday Night Live” star’s grandfather, Peacock announced on Thursday. Pesci joins previously announced “Sopranos” star Edie Falco, who will play Davidson’s mom.
Can we expect references to their mob royalty status from Davidson, who will also write and executive produce the series?
The half-hour live-action comedy is a heightened, fictionalized version of the comedian’s life. Per Peacock, “the series will combine grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the unfiltered and completely original worldview for which Pete is well known.”
In May, the “King of Staten Island” star left “SNL” after seven years, in a mass exodus that also saw Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney exiting.

As an actor, Ray Liotta could look into the eyes of the most coldblooded sociopath and find the glimmer of mirth needed to transmit a familiar character to the screen. Someone the audience can identify with, cheer on even as he does the most vile things, for the least redeemable reasons. Liotta will go down in motion picture history as one of the great character actors because he found fully realized people inside the most damaged goods.
Liotta played bad cops and good robbers, sympathetic psychos and friendly ghosts. He is at his best when he is at his worst, and he takes you along with him. If his character is annoyed, the audience gets mad. When his character gets angry, the audience wants blood. Liotta can accommodate without even pulling a trigger. In Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990), Henry Hill learns at one point his girlfriend, and future wife, Karen...

Joe Pesci is a funny guy — just don't tell him that. With roles ranging from mafia men to an inept burglar, the actor has made a career out of playing hilarious hot-heads. But not all Pesci characters are identical. They all might have short-tempers, but piss off the wrong one and instead of a comical outburst of nonsense swearing you just might end up in a hole in the ground. Few of Pesci's roles are as remembered for their slapstick sadism more than Tommy DeVito in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas." The tension in every scene that Pesci appears in is immediately heightened by his very...

This article contains light spoilers for The Many Saints of Newark.
Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta have a Goodfellas reunion, of sorts, in The Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark. No, the former Tommy DeVito isn’t in the credits, and he doesn’t bring his shine box. He is slipped in like contraband at a federal penitentiary.
Both David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos and co-writer of The Many Saints of Newark, and Alan Taylor, the film’s director, revel in film references. The esteemed filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock is renowned for making small appearances in his own films. For the film Lifeboat, which had a very limited cast and set, he makes his cameo on the page of a newspaper. Pesci shows up on classic vinyl.

Martin Scorsese’s late mother Catherine played a special role throughout his career, most famously in a cameo during one of the most memorable sequences of “Goodfellas.” Catherine appears in one scene as the mother of Joe Pesci’s psychopathic mobster Tommy DeVito. Tommy brings his fellow mobsters Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) back home to pick up a shovel so they can bury a dead body, only to run into Tommy’s mother when they enter the house. Scorsese reveals in an introduction for the virtual 2021 TCM Film Festival (via EW) that his mother’s appearance was entirely unscripted except for one line of dialogue.
“All we told her to do was just welcome her son home; she hasn’t seen him in a while,” Scorsese said. “The key there is ultimately the warmth between all of them and particularly my mother playing his...

The 63rd Academy Awards took place on March 25, 1991. For the first time in 60 years, a western took home the big prize, a first-time director beat out a veteran, the acting awards were split among four different films and an 80s pop idol caused a sensation. For the second consecutive year, Billy Crystal hosted the event, opening the night by riding in on a horse, which was most likely a plug for his upcoming film “City Slickers,” but also seemed to foreshadow the theme for the evening.
“Dances with Wolves” became the first western since “Cimarron” 60 years earlier to win Best Picture. Kevin Costner‘s epic adventure came into the night with the most nominations at 12, and walked away with the most statues at seven. Boardwalk Empire alum Vincent Piazza is set as a lead opposite Shannyn Sossamon in The Cleaning Lady, Fox’s drama pilot based on the Argentinian series, from Miranda Kwok, Melissa Carter, Shay Mitchell’s Amore & Vita Productions, Warner Bros TV and Fox Entertainment.
Written by Kwok and directed by Michael Offer, The Cleaning Lady is a one-hour darkly aspirational character drama about a whip-smart Filipina doctor, Reyna Salonga (Sossamon), who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes an on-call cleaning lady for the mob. Willing to do anything to save her son, Reyna walks the tightrope of morality, breaking the law for all the right reasons — and eventually forges her own path in the criminal underworld as she starts playing the game by her own rules.

“The Irishman” co-stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are up for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, but this is not the first time the duo has gone head to head. They last clashed 29 years ago in the same category, and one came out on top.
Pesci prevailed for his iconic role as Tommy DeVito in “Goodfellas” (1990), defeating Pacino (“Dick Tracy”), Bruce Davison (“Longtime Companion”), Andy Garcia (“The Godfather Part III”) and Graham Greene (“Dances with Wolves”). And who can forget his equally iconic speech (watch above): “It was my privilege. Thank you.” Brevity is the soul of wit and acceptance speeches (see also: Merritt Wever‘s 2013 Emmy speech).
This was Pesci’s second and most recent nomination until now. Pacino was on his sixth bid and seeking his first win, which would come two years later in the lead category for 1922’s “Scent of a Woman” (he was...

Martin Scorsese’s gangster classic “Goodfellas” is often cited as one of the most violent movies ever made, but it could have been a whole lot bloodier had it not been for test screenings. Ahead of “The Irishman” release next month, Scorsese spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the challenges of test screening “Goodfellas.” The director remembered the film’s unflinching violence prompting walkouts, creating tension between him and studio Warner Bros.
“It was an angry reaction,” Scorsese said. “It became very difficult. It was a constant battle until a few weeks before release…[the film] terrified Warner Bros. executives at the time.”
One scene Scorsese cut back on because of the test screenings was the brutal murder of gangster Billy Batts (Frank Vincent). Frontrunners are already forming for the Oscar Best Supporting Actor race, according to early predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, enough teaser trailers are out there, ranging from “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “The Irishman” to “Joker” and “Ford v Ferrari” to provide some sense of what at least feels like a worthy contender. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later. An unconvincing crime tale from the streaming giant sees the Oscar winner in murky territory taking a shallow, tourist-friendly view of Japan
Blood is thicker than water, and as pulp fiction would have it, that viscosity is never denser than in the bustling underground of organized crime. They don’t call it a capital-f Family for nothing; trust is the only currency with any worth among gang types, and the type of alpha-male mentality lending itself to mob life favors members of its own pack. In Goodfellas, Henry Hill’s half-Irish lineage prevents him from ever graduating to a full-fledged “made man” in the mafia to which he pledges himself, no matter how hard he tries. (Not that pure Italian blood can save Tommy DeVito from the doom awaiting him.)
