Melbourne, Sep 3 (Ians) India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was the only player from the country selected in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League (Wbbl) overseas draft, held on Sunday. She was placed in the platinum category of the draft and was picked by Melbourne Renegades, who also drafted in West Indies captain Hayley Matthews.
Harmanpreet returns to the Renegades and the Wbbl after missing last season due to injury. She was the Player of the Tournament in Wbbl season seven, after being the Renegades’ leading run-scorer (406) and wicket-taker (15). She recently represented the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, and led the Mumbai Indians to the inaugural Women’s Ipl title earlier this year.
“I’m so pleased we got both of them and I’m looking forward to them working with us again this year. It was a tough decision – do we go Harmanpreet at pick three, or do we go Hayley.

Wellington, Aug 31 (Ians) Batter Kate Anderson and all-rounder Bella Armstrong have earned their maiden call-ups to the New Zealand women’s upcoming tour of South Africa in September, just two years after receiving Nzc Development contracts.
The selectors have pitched up two separate 15-player squads for a tour that comprises three ODIs and five T20Is, starting from September 24.
Anderson’s selection follows her most successful professional season, which saw her named Nzc’s Women’s Domestic Player of The Year and put her in line to tour Sri Lanka with the White Ferns in July before she was ruled out with a finger injury.
The 27-year-old smashed a chart-topping 536 runs at an average of 59 in the Super Smash, her run aggregate more than 100 clear of the next best female or male.

London, July 28 (Ians) India batter Jemimah Rodrigues will be returning to Northern Superchargers for a third successive season at The Hundred after she was signed as late replacement for injured Australian allrounder Heather Graham on Friday.
Jemimah was Superchargers’ leading run-getter in the inaugural season, in 2021, aggregating 249 runs in seven innings. However, she missed the majority of last year’s competition for the franchise with a wrist injury.
Superchargers opted not to retain the 22-year old Indian ahead of March’s draft but have now brought her back as a replacement.
“I’m so excited to be back in The Hundred,” Rodrigues was quoted as saying in the franchise’s media release.
“It’s a world-class competition and I’ve had so much taking part in it previously. I was very disappointed to have to withdraw last year through injury so it’s great to be back. Headingley is a brilliant ground to play at,...

Dubai, April 20 (Ians) She may have led the Indian Women’s T20 squad in international matches on and off since 2019 but England captain Heather Knight says Smriti Mandhana found the pressure too much and struggled to manage captaincy during the recently-concluded Women’s Premier League (Wpl).
Mandhana found captaincy “quite tricky” during the Wpl and struggled to manage the hype that came with the role, her Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Heather Knight has said.
Knight, speaking on the latest 100% Cricket Podcast, suggested the hype surrounding the inaugural edition of the Wpl and the pressure that comes with captaining a high-profile team affected Mandhana, whose side won just twice in eight matches.
Mandhana was charged with leading a side comprising international heavyweights in Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine, Dane van Niekerk, Megan Schutt and Knight herself, but Rcb still finished fourth out of five teams.

Mumbai, March 21 (Ians) Mumbai Indians (Mi) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) by four wickets in Match 19 of the Women’s Premier League (Wpl) on Tuesday at the D.Y Patil Stadium here to take the top spot.
With the win, Mumbai hold the provisional top spot and will have to wait for the result of the match between Delhi Capitals and Up Warriorz to ensure their direct qualification to the final.
Amelia Kerr mixed guile, flight, and turn to pick up three wickets (3-22) as a disciplined bowling effort from the Mi bowlers restricted Rcb to 125/9 in 20 overs. Yastika Bhatia then provided a good platform with a 26-ball 30 before Kerr’s calculated knock of 31 not out off 27 balls helped Mi seal the chase after a slight stutter in the middle.

Mumbai, March 19 (Ians) It was a Saturday night to remember for long for New Zealand captain Sophie Devine and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Womens Premier League (Wpl).
In the side’s incredible chase of 189 against Gujarat Giants at the Brabourne Stadium, Sophie left everyone enthralled through her electrifying 36-ball 99, laced with eight sixes and nine fours, which also became the highest score of the inaugural edition of Wpl, though she missed out on a century by just one run.
Even after Sophie got out on 99, the crowd was on their feet, much like the entire Rcb dugout doffing their hat to an outstanding exhibition of power-hitting they witnessed, with every corner of the stadium chanting her name loud and clear.
After the match ended, Sophie was appreciative of the love she got during the match.
“I’m so used to hearing chants for Perry and Mandhana, and was feeling a bit left out.

Mumbai, March 18 (Ians) Royal Challenger Bangalore opener Sophie Devine said her familiarity with the Brabourne Stadium after playing a few matches there helped her blast a 36-ball 99 to help her team to an eight-wicket win against Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (Wpl) here on Saturday.

But Devine overshadowed everyone and overpowered Gujarat Giants, who had put up a big total of 188/4 in their 20 overs thanks to a superb fifty by Laura Wolvaardt (68 of 42) who shared two half-century partnerships with S Meghana (31 off 32) and Ashleigh Gardner (41 off 26).

Navi Mumbai, March 13 (Ians) A fighting fifty (67 not out off 52) by Ellyse Perry along with Richa Ghosh’s quickfire knock (37 off 16) lifted Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) to 150/4 against Delhi Capitals in a Women’s Premier League (Wpl) 2023 match at the Dr Dy Patil Sports Academy, here on Monday.
Perry was dropped on 29 by Shikha Pandey and she made the Delhi side pay for it.
Put into bat first, Rcb made a slow start as Marizanne Kapp set a brilliant tone for DC by bowling a maiden first over against Smriti Mandhana. Kapp, who claimed a sensational fifer in the last game, continued her impressive show along with Alice Capsey from the other end and the pressure was building on Rcb batters, especially Mandhana.

Mumbai, March 10 (Ians) After a thumping 10-wicket win over Rcb in Wpl 2023, Up Warriorz skipper Alyssa Healy on Friday credited bowlers especially spinners for their success, saying that they held their nerve and took wickets at crucial times. Excellent outings from spinners Sophie Ecclestone (4/13) and Deepti Sharma (3/26) helped Up Warriorz bowl out Rcb for 138 despite a fighting half-century (52 off 39) by Ellyse Perry in a Wpl 2023 match. After Perry, Sophie Devine (36 off 24) was next top-scorer for Rcb as other batters struggled to get going against a disciplined Up bowling attack.
In reply, Healy (96 not out) smashed Rcb bowlers all-round the park to score a quickfire fifty and she got perfect support from her opening partner Devika Vaidya Devika Vaidya (36 not out off 31).
None of the Rcb bowlers looked effective as Healy and Devika stitched an unbeaten and attacking opening partnership of 139 runs as Up Warriorz chased down the target in just 13 overs.

Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) Fantastic fifties from Harleen Deol and Sophia Dunkley coupled with Ashleigh Gardner’s three-fer propelled Gujarat Giants to 11-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore and their first win of Wpl 2023 at the Brabourne Stadium, here on Wednesday.
Electing to bat first, Sophia set the tone for Gujarat’s big total through a breath-taking 65 off 28 balls, including slamming fastest fifty of the tournament in 18 balls. In her blazing knock, she slammed 11 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 232.14.

For the third consecutive time in the competition, Bangalore’s bowling was taken apart, barring Shreyanka Patil and Heather Knight taking four wickets while conceding 49 runs off six overs between them.

Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) A valiant 66 from Sophie Devine went in vain as Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered a 11-run defeat against Gujarat Giants for their third straight loss of Wpl 20233 at the Brabourne Stadium, here on Wednesday.
With immense pressure of chasing down 202, Sophie slammed eight fours and two sixes in her 45-ball knock while sharing a 54-run opening partnership with Smriti Mandhana and a promising stand of 43 runs with Ellyse Perry.
Heather Knight also landed some big blows. But Gujarat taking five wickets after the half-way stage meant Bangalore ended up at 190/6 in 20 overs and are now rooted to the bottom of points table.
Smriti got Bangalore’s chase off to a solid start by hitting two boundaries off Tanuja Kanwer in the second over. Sophie joined the party by slashing and pulling off Kim Garth to collect back-to-back fours, with Smriti ending the over with her trademark cover drive.

Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) Gujarat Giants captain Sneh Rana won the toss and elected to bat first against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Wpl 2023 match at Brabourne Stadium, here on Wednesday.
After winning the toss, Sneh said the playing eleven is unchanged from their three-wicket loss to Up Warriorz on Sunday.
“It’s a used pitch. Want to bat freely with our batting depth. The environment was very positive – the kind of cricket we played. I’m enjoying the role. It adds responsibility to your shoulders,” she added.
Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana said leg-spin all-rounder Poonam Khemnar will replace batter Disha Kasat in the playing eleven.
“Considering the wicket, I don’t mind doing both. But we would’ve loved to bat as well. We had the discussion as a bowling unit (about the short outfield dimensions). First two games weren’t the way we wanted to start. It’s 8 matches...

Bangalore’s overseas stars in Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Sophie Devine and Megan Schutt are yet to produce match-winning performances in the competition, something which former India men’s wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel believes is a tremendous concern for the Smriti Mandhana-led side.
"The biggest concern for Rcb is their overseas stars are not performing. They have invested heavily in their overseas players and they have not performed. Another thing is, whoever gets a start, should try to get a big one, which is something ailing in Rcb’s camp," said Patel while replying to a question from Ians in a virtual interaction facilitated by Sports18 and JioCinema.
With talk on social media comparing the Rcb women’s team to their male Ipl counterparts in terms of being strong on paper but not firing collectively as a unit, Patel thinks the side still has it in them to bounce back from twin defeats.

Mumbai, March 6 (Ians) Off-spin all-rounder Hayley Matthews picked three wickets to lead a superb bowling show for Mumbai Indians as they bowled out Royal Challengers Bangalore for 155 in the fourth match of Wpl 2023 at Brabourne Stadium on Monday.
Bangalore had a flying start as they reached 39/0. But Hayley and Saika Ishaque making double strikes meant they went to 43/4. It took decent cameos from Kanika Ahuja, Richa Ghosh, Shreyanka Patil and Megan Schutt to take Bangalore past 150.
For Mumbai, Hayley was the standout bowler with 3-28, while Saika and Amelia Kerr took two wickets each as the spinners took seven wickets combined. Bangalore captain Smriti Mandhana began by dancing down the pitch to punch Hayley through extra cover for a boundary. Bangalore’s chase began with Smriti Mandhana taking two fours, including a sweetly-timed pick-up shot, and a six off Marizanne Kapp in the second over. From the other end, Sophie Devine took advantage of width coming from Shikha Pandey to hit three boundaries in the third over.

During the player auction held earlier in the month, Bangalore made some big-ticket purchases in terms of overseas players.
They got in Australia’s premier all-rounder Ellyse Perry and her pace counterpart Megan Schutt along with Wbbl regular Erin Burns, as well as England, and New Zealand skippers Heather Knight, and Sophie Devine, apart from South Africa’s leg-spin all-rounder Dane van Niekerk.
But who gets into the four overseas slots out of six marquee players in the playing eleven throughout the 22-game tournament starting from March 4 and running till March 26 is a question which will keep the Bangalore think-tank on their toes, something which was agreed by Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket at Rcb.
"It’s something which will be relevant throughout the whole tournament. But when you look at the programme and see four games in the first six days, it’s highly likely all six will play a role at some stage.

Cape Town, Feb 17 (Ians) New Zealand kept their faint hopes of reaching the semifinals alive with an emphatic 71-run win over Bangladesh in the Icc Women’s T20 World Cup at the Newlands here on Friday.
Suzie Bates’s superb 81 runs set the White Ferns on their way to a first victory of the Icc Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, validating their decision to bat first with a tournament-high 189 for three in their 20 overs.
That proved far too much for the Tigresses, whose chances of a miraculous victory fell away after losing two wickets early in their reply, as they stuttered to 118 for eight.
Needing a big win to stand a chance of progressing to the last four, New Zealand opted for a hit-and-run approach from the off. Bernadine Bezuidenhout started the innings with purpose, guiding a wide and fullish first ball from Marufa Akter down to the third-man boundary.

New Delhi, Jan 28 (Ians) New Zealand captain Sophie Devine stated that her team has set their sight on winning the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, to be held in South Africa from February 10-26.
New Zealand’s best showing in the Women’s T20 World Cup has been runners-up finishes in 2009 and 2010. When the tournament was last held in 2020 in Australia, they had to make an early exit from the group stages.
“Like every other team that’s here – we are here to win it. We know what it takes to win games of cricket and the style of play that can help us achieve that. It’s now up to us to be able to do that game after game under the pressures of a World Cup,” she was quoted as saying by Icc.

Wellington, Jan 27 (Ians) The New Zealand women’s cricket team is still facing concerns over the availability of captain Sophie Devine at the start of the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa because of a broken foot.
Doubts over Sofie’s involvement in the Women’s T20 World Cup, to be held in and around Cape Town from February 10-26, have increased as she was declared unavailable for the practice matches against England.
Coach Ben Sawyer has reportedly said that the opening batter wouldn’t play in the three practice matches against England but was optimistic about her comeback for the start of their World Cup campaign on February 11.
Sophie, who has not featured for the Wellington Blaze in their last three Super Smash fixtures as a precaution due to a minor foot injury, is considered fit to travel to South Africa.

Auckland, Nov 28 (Ians) Wicket-keeper-obatter Jess McFadyen is set to make her international cricket debut through New Zealand’s upcoming home series against Bangladesh.

New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer said the series against Bangladesh, which comprises three T20s and three ODIs, was a good opportunity for Jess to show her skills on the international stage, especially with the Women’s T20 World Cup happening in South Africa next year.
“Debuting for your country is always a special moment, so we’re delighted to be welcoming Jess into the side for what will be an exciting series. Jess brings great energy...

England batter Eve Jones, who was signed as an initial replacement for Harmanpreet, will now be signed on as an overseas replacement player by the Renegades.
“Harmanpreet was fantastic for us last season and we were looking forward to having her as part of our squad again this year, but unfortunately she has been ruled out through injury. Eve will stay on with our squad for at least the next couple of matches, as we work through the best strategy for our squad for the remainder of the tournament,” said James Rosengarten,...
