Nathaniel Dett(1882-1943)

Composer and teacher, educated at Oliver Willis Halstead Conservatory
in Lockport, New York, and at Columbia University, the University of
Pennsylvania, the American Conservatory, the Oberlin Conservatory (BM,
Mus. D.), Harvard University (Mus. D.), Howard University, and the
Eastman School of Music (MM). He was a church pianist in Niagara Falls
from 1898 to 1903, director of music at Lane College, 1908-1911, the
Lincoln Institute, 1911-1913, and Bennett College in 1937. He founded
the Musical Arts Society, and directed the School of Music at the
Hampton Institute, and conducted the Hampton Choirs. He received an
award from the Harmon Foundation and the Palm and Ribbon Award from the
Royal Belgian Band. He joined ASCAP in 1925.
