Exclusive: “Things have changed a little bit,” Omar Sy admits about life after Lupin. He laughs. “My parents do know what I do now.”

The decision to honour director still haunted by statutory rape charge sparked controversy.
Roman Polanski has turned down an offer to preside over the 42nd edition of the French Césars on Feb 24, his lawyer told French news agency Afp on Tuesday [24].
Last week’s announcement by organising body the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences sparked controversy in light of the 1977 charge that the director sexually-assaulted a 13-year-old girl on the fringes of a Vogue photoshoot in Los Angeles.
Alongside calls for a boycott, a petition demanding his removal from the role drew some 60,000 signatures.
A number of women’s rights groups had called for a demonstration outside the ceremony, which is due to take place in the Salle Pleyel concert hall in central Paris this year.
Laurence Rossignol, France’s Minister for Families, Children and Women, declared she was “shocked” by the academy’s decision to Polanksi. The country’s Minister of Culture Audrey Azoulay refused...

Decision to fete director still haunted by 1977 statutory rape charge sparks controversy in some quarters in France.
French-Polish director Roman Polanski will preside over the 42nd edition of the French Césars on Feb 24, France’s Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences has announced.
“Insatiable aesthete, Roman Polanski has reinvented his art and work over the years,” academy president Alain Terzian said in a statement.
“Artist, cineaste, producer, screenwriter, actor, director, there are many words that define Roman Polanski but only one to express our admiration and enchantment: thank you.”
However, the decision to honour Polanski has sparked protest from some quarters in France due to the 1977 charge that he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl, who was modelling for him on a Vogue magazine shoot in Los Angeles.
News of his César presidency prompted a wave of social media postings protesting that Polanski should be honoured in this way given the rape charge, regardless of the...

French-Algerian filmmaker and producer Rachid Bouchareb, who is being honoured with a career achievement award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, talked extensively about his career at a special ‘in conversation’ event.
Born to Algerian parents who moved to Paris just after the Second World War, twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb recounted how he was originally destined to work in manufacturing like his father.
“I was sitting at work one day when I decided to call the offices of a local broadcaster. I got through to a receptionist who I asked ‘how do people get into cinema’. She had more important things to do than talk to me but she gave me some names of schools nonetheless,” said Bouchareb, who would go onto make his first feature Bâton Rouge in 1985 with the support of the late producer Humbert Balsan.

French-Algerian filmmaker Rachid Bouchereb, who is being honoured with a career achievement award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival this year, talked extensively about his career at a special ‘in conversation’ event.
The director, whose credits include Oscar-nominated Days of Glory and Outside the Law as well as the more recent Two Men in Town starring Forest Whitaker and Harvey Keitel, revealed his love of cinema had unusual origins.
Referring to his childhood in the run-down Parisian suburb of Bobigny, Bouchareb recounted how he and his friends used to sneak into the local cinema for free.

Terence Stamp tells of trouser trouble on a date with Brigitte Bardot, and Mathieu Kassovitz reveals his love-hate relationship with his 'life-changing' film La Haine
When Terence met Brigitte
Some opening lines are tough to beat. I went to meet Terence Stamp at BFI Southbank last week as he celebrated the start of a career retrospective at the venue, running until the end of May. The season kicked off with the haunting Theorem, in which Stamp starred as the Visitor for Pier Paolo Pasolini. Stamp, now 74, still oozes calm and knows he's always going to be the coolest and most handsome person in the room. He's wearing a beige three-piece corduroy suit, which looks good even with socks and Birkenstocks. I congratulate him on the outfit. "Oh, yeah, this is a favourite when I'm in London. I had a blind date with Brigitte Bardot once and I wore this," he says,...

This looks amazing. I'm so anxious to see it! StudioCanal has debuted the final French trailer for Michel Gondry's new film Mood Indigo, which looks like a magical romantic adventure, mixing everything from Science of Sleep to Eternal Sunshine and even some Amélie, thanks to the adorable Audrey Tautou. This also stars Romain Duris as Colin, the centerpoint of this trailer, as well as other recognizable faces like Omar Sy, Jamel Debbouze and Gad Elmaleh. There's so many wacky, weird, wonderful, magical things happening in this trailer, I'm so excited to see it, I had no idea Gondry had something like this up his sleeve for 2013. I hope it'll be out here by the summer. The song in the middle is "I Love You" by Woodkid. Enjoy! Here's the second, final French trailer for Michel Gondry's Mood Indigo, on YouTube (via The Playlist): Note: this video does not have English subtitles yet,...

Hollywood's Costner takes home Honorary Award Speaking of Hollywood, the French Academy has frequently given its Honorary César (an equivalent to the Lifetime Achievement Award) to some curious group of Hollywood celebrities. Among those are Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Quentin Tarantino, Hugh Grant, Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Spike Lee, Andie McDowell, and Sylvester Stallone. This year, they've made another curious choice: Kevin Costner, whose Honorary Award was a tribute to his "fabulous contribution to cinematic history." Costner, among whose movie credits as actor and/or director are Dances with Wolves, Bull Durham, JFK, The Bodyguard, The Postman, and Waterworld, thanked the French Academy of Film Arts and Sciences for embracing him "for who I am." Wealthy taxpayers' desire to flee tough fiscal policy has sparked a debate about patriotism and personal gain
Graphic: the high profile figures leaving France
France is discovering that, when it comes to wealthy taxpayers, you win some – and you lose some.
As the country's celebrities have lined up to defend or denigrate actor Gérard Depardieu following his self-imposed fiscal exile in neighbouring Belgium, the French have just welcomed back prize-winning author Michel Houellebecq after more than a decade living abroad.
The tax row sparked by Depardieu's departure has divided France – and not simply along traditional left-right, north-south or rich-poor lines. Fans and critics have spent the last week fretting over the morality of his decision and whether concepts of patriotism and solidarity outweigh those of personal gain and perceived greed.
Even after weeks of speculation, the announcement a fortnight ago that Depardieu, 63, was moving to Belgium to take refuge...

Chicken With Plums (Poulet Aux Prunes) is an enchanting confection of a movie. I was unexpectedly delighted by this unique movie. It is the follow-up film from co-directors Iranian Marjane Satrapi and Frenchman Vincent Paronnaud to their 2007 film Persepolis, a film I did not see (despite hearing good buzz) as I’m not big on animation; this movie has made me reconsider.
My biggest complaint about this movie is with its title: it refers to a trifling detail in the film, and waiting to discover its significance was distracting. Also, it sounds like a movie about food, non? And even if it were about food, in an age of foodies and Top Chef, it’s not an appealing dish. It’s hard to believe that the imagination is on display on screen couldn’t come up with something more appealing.
I’m not going to go...

A La Cart: Satrapi’s Latest a Visual, Fairy Tale Buffet
Directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud prove they are as visually adept with live action cinema as they are with animation, unveiling Chicken With Plums, their follow-up to their much hailed 2007 debut, Persepolis, as an extravagant adaptation of Satrapi’s own graphic novel. As sumptuously gratifying as their film is, there’s a definite inadequacy in its naïve considerations of love and commitment that casts a hollow pallor over the proceedings. But that’s not to say you won’t be enchanted by the tragic melancholy buoyed by vibrant imagery and delightful, though distracting, multiple asides.
Set in 1950’s Tehran, we meet a famed and downtrodden violinist, Nasser Ali (Mathieu Amalric), desperately searching to replace his beloved instrument, recently broken beyond repair. Alas, he’s unable to find an instrument that compares, and decides that he will simply lie...

Written by Peter Morgan
Directed by Fernando Meirelles
UK/Austria/France/Brazil, 2011
360’s writer Peter Morgan has declared that the film is directly inspired by Reigen, an 1897 play notably adapted to film by Max Ophüls as La ronde in 1950. The title of Morgan’s work, directed by Fernando Meirelles, derives from the 360 degrees of a circle, and the film notably begins and ends with the exact same scenario; things are destined to repeat themselves. La ronde and 360 are both portmanteau films, which have become especially popular in the last decade thanks to directors like Alejandro González Iñárritu with Babel and Amores perros, and the commercial and awards success of Paul Haggis’ Crash. While these films – that either examine a particular city or country, or take place at various locations around the planet – at least attempted to reflect on specific social anxieties that acted as recurring themes, 360 seem to draw entirely...

This all-star Us-Europudding of a film about interrelated lives is so wildly unconvincing, it feels as if it was directed by Alan Partridge, writes Peter Bradshaw
Screenwriter Peter Morgan and director Fernando Meirelles have proven themselves mighty talents in the past, but they've come a catastrophic cropper with this bizarre film, an all-star multinational Us-Europudding, lurching along in a wince-making series of tonal misjudgments and false notes. 360 is a portmanteau film, a daisy chain of interrelated lives; the title promises a panoptic view. It's perhaps inspired by the multi-stranded movies of Alejandro González Iñárittu, and the cyclical structure is taken loosely from Arthur Schnitzler's stage-play Le Ronde but with a hopelessly shallow pseudo-sophistication that made me think it had in fact been written and directed by Alan Partridge. Anthony Hopkins is a troubled soul in Colorado, searching for the truth about his vanished daughter; Jude Law is a businessman in Berlin,...

Anthony Hopkins is a troubled soul in Colorado, searching for the truth about his vanished daughter; Jude Law is a businessman in Berlin,...

Title: 360 Magnolia Pictures Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten Grade: B Director: Fernando Meirelles Screenwriter: Peter Morgan Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Ben Foster, Dinara Drukarova, Gabriela Marcinkova, Jamel Debbouze, Johannes Krisch, Jude Law, Lucia Siposova Screened at: Review 2, NYC, 7/24/12 Opens: August 3, 2012 “If you see a fork in the road, take it,” says a wise man in a quote that frames Fernando Merielles’ “360.” If this gives the impression that the film will be like a Zen koan, impenetrable for some in the audience but allowing epiphanies by others, that effect would be incorrect. Instead, “360” comes across as basically naturalistic rather than stylized, a straight story [ Read More ]...

The talented pair behind 2007's charming, whimsical and fairly hard-hitting animation Persepolis, Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi, have reunited to make a second feature, this time in a live-action format. It's called Chicken With Plums and it's got a new trailer viewable below, courtesy of The Hollywood News. First impressions are "Oooo, that's rather lovely". It's set in a stylised fantasy world that brings Amelie to mind (look out for Jeunet alumnus Jamel Debbouze) but with animated touches familiar from Persepolis. Mathieu Amalric plays violinist Nasser Ali Khan, a man so heartbroken by the destruction of his prize instrument that he takes to his bed and waits for death. Languishing in depression is a lot more magical in Satrapi's graphic novel though, and Khan's revelries take us on an Inception-esque journey into a dream world haunted by angels of death, snow flurries, and, by the looks of things, giant boobies.

Majority of A answers: You are more of a Cesar, more of a prophet than Uncle Boonmee. In fact you do not like Thailand for its films, but for its beaches and cuisine. Anyway, subtitles annoy you because, you must admit, you have never been able to do two things at once, and even if you did not know who Tabar Rahim was to begin with, your ignorance has been repaired thaks to Jacques Audiard. So, Gentlemen, without letting the prophet notion go to your head, there’s only one thing left to do: after a concert, head for the red carpet with Melanie Thierry, Emmanuelle Devos or Mademoisellle Chambon on your arm, you can pretend to be a good-looker! What? You are a woman? No problem. For you, Ladies, at the end of the day, you will be dressed in Coco Chanel when you arrive at the ceremony, escorted by Niels Arestrup. Plans for the end of the evening? Ok, after the Cesar awards, what could be nicer or simpler than enjoying one for the road at Fouquets? (Please note the author’s huge effort to quote as many names from the 2010 Cesar Awards, Applause)
Majority of B answers: You are more of a Palme d’or, Lung Boonmee raluek Chat (Bless you! Translated Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives) directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (if you manage to pronounce his name correctly first go, you’ll win a free cocktail at the bar). Like Mathieu Amalric, who is away on tour, what matters for you are these actors and gods who deserve Grand Prizes, in Cannes, you can pretend to be Juliette Binoche, female replica of your husband who thinks he is (depending on the day) the Biutiful Javier Bardem, or Elio Germano, the hero of your Nostra Vita…But never mind, for you la nostra vita puts the leap years into rhyming poetry; he’s the man who asks who told you from the top of the stairs (This time it was far more complicated trying to discreetly slip in a Cannes Film Festival 2010 winner!) If you have seen all these films, another free cocktail awaits you at the bar.
Majority of C answers: You may be completely exhausted; you still haven’t got a clue! No Palmes or Cesars for you! So not interested in Deauville, Dinard, La Baule or La Rochelle? Toronto, Venice Film Festival, Golden Globbes or Marrakech? Still nothing? And what about Les Victoires de la Musique (an annual French awards ceremony that recognizes the best singers of the year), Nrj radio station awards, Mirande Country Music Festival or Enghien Jazz Festival? Still fail to ring a bell? Don’t despair, try musical chairs. There are 2 of you and 1 chair. When the music stops, you must rush to sit on the chair first. If you are the one still standing, you’re lost. If this is the case, you’re having a bad time and I’m afraid your lucky number is 0 and your favorite color black. My advice: Stay in your hotel room and order room-service.
