TelevisaUnivision, the Spanish-language media giant, took a different approach to its upfront this year, turning the west side’s Hk Hall into what the company called “Casa Cultura,” a venue that celebrates Latin and Hispanic culture, through food, music, entertainment and more.
The company, led by CEO Wade Davis, leaned on that message in a brief afternoon presentation to advertisers and media buyers (later that evening, the company brought in music star Becky G to lead a performance).
“I wanted to really have our marketers and audience feel it, versus me just kind of standing on stage and showing a video of stuff that we usually do,” TelevisaUnivision ad sales chief Donna Speciale told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “I feel like the interaction between the sports, the music, news or political, what’s going on in our newsrooms, Vix, streaming, the explosion of a streaming, all of that...

The Spanish-language streamer could stand out as one of the few services to show a profit if TelevisaUnivision’s CEO’s prediction comes to pass.
TelevisaUnivision is no different from any other broadcaster when it comes to facing the pressures of the industry today. The company owns and operates the Spanish-language Univision channel as well as the streaming platform ViX, and like many other providers, it faces pressure to show improving financial results from its streamers while its linear TV channels see their audience decline thanks to cord-cutting. The company showed a loss in its first quarter of 2024, but CEO Wade Davis also let slip that the company’s direct-to-consumer (Dtc) segment, of which ViX is the crown jewel, could show a profit by the second half of this year.
Key Facts: TelevisaUnivision showed a $52 million loss as it invested more into its Dtc segment. ViX saw its hours streamed...

TelevisaUnivision reported a 7% year-over-year increase in revenue due to direct-to-consumer proceeds and linear networks in Mexico, but flat domestic ad revenue dragged down overall results.
Total ad revenue increased 7% to $648 million. In the U.S., though, ad revenue was flat with the prior year, with the company saying that growth in streaming was offset by “some softness” in its linear networks.
Subscription and licensing revenue increased 9% to $473 million, but in the U.S. it was flat at $327 million. Growth in both the U.S. and Mexico was driven by ViX’s premium tier, but linear TV continued to experience subscriber losses.
Univision and the media holdings of Mexico’s Grupo Televisa closed their $4.8 billion merger in January 2022. TelevisaUnivision is privately held.

Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision reported virtually unchanged U.S. revenue of $739.9 million in the first quarter of 2024, as a 4 percent drop in “other” revenue was offset by subscription and licensing revenue, as well as advertising revenue that rose minimally. It also touted that its streaming business, which had ended 2023 with more than 7 million subscribers, would turn profitable by the back half of 2024.
TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis on a late morning analyst call predicted his company’s ViX streaming platforms would reach profitability in the second half of this year. “The only other company that has achieved this in the industry is Netflix,” he said.
Growth in streaming was “offset by some softness in linear networks,” the company said about its $399.4 million in U.S. ad revenue for the latest period. In 1982, anthropologist Wade Davis traveled to Haiti on a mission: to investigate documented cases of zombiism, specifically cases of people who had been declared dead but who then miraculously came back to life. Davis immersed himself in the very real world of Haitian voodoo, witnessing an array of unbelievable rituals and fascinating rites, prompting him to write the book The Serpent and the Rainbow, which would go on to become a bestseller. Referred to in certain circles as a sort of real life Indiana Jones, Davis’ profile rose and, of course, Hollywood came calling, hoping his tales of voodoo and mystery might translate into a spectacular big screen adventure. Davis was wary of Hollywood and worried the adaptation of his book would bastardize his accounts, but hoped if the right people were involved, his story would be given a respectable treatment. As is often the case in the City of Angels,...

Televisa-Univision’s streaming service Vix grew its premium subscriber base to 7 million by the end of last year, the company revealed on Thursday.
The data point was announced as part of Televisa-Univision’s fourth quarter (Q4) and full-year earnings report for 2023, which saw a continued stregthening of its cross-border streaming business as more Spanish-language consumers cut the cable and satellite cord.
Vix launched three years ago as Prende TV, and was rebranded following the merger of various broadcast and digital assets owned by the former incarnations of Univision and Grupo Televisa.
The company said the number of monthly active users on a free, ad-supported version of Vix continued to grow during Q4, though it did not provide specific numbers to that effect. Last fall, executives said the ad-inclusive Vix streamer had around 40 million monthly active users.

Super Bowl Lviii broke viewership records across the board last Sunday, including in one small-but-growing segment: Spanish-language audiences.
Speaking to Wall Street analysts during TelevisaUnivision’s fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Wade Davis said the game was “overwhelmingly successful” and offers “a lot of upside” for the future.
The company had exclusive Spanish-language streaming rights in both the U.S. and Mexico, plus the broadcast exclusive in the U.S. on Univision under a licensing agreement with Paramount’s CBS Sports. The debut Super Bowl on the 62-year-old broadcast network, which succeeded past Super Bowls on cable’s ESPN Deportes, averaged 2.3 million viewers and peaked at 2.6 million. That’s the biggest tune-in since the game started being carried in Spanish in the U.S. in 2014 and a notch above Telemundo’s prior record a year ago, with 1.9 million viewers.

Hispanic media giant TelevisaUnivision’s total revenue slid 7% year-over-year to hit $820.7 million in the fourth quarter, hampered by a slowdown in U.S. advertising.
Revenue from U.S. advertising fell 5% to $467.2 million. Without mid-term U.S. political ad spending, World Cup broadcasts and radio station divestitures in the year-ago quarter, ad sales would have risen 4% in the 2023 quarter, the company said.
Privately-held TelevisaUnivision reports its bottom-line results as adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization, or Oibda. In the fourth quarter, Oibda fell 7% to $468.1 million.
The company blamed the downturn in profits on the absence of World Cup sublicensing and U.S. political revenue, noting that operating expenses in the quarter decreased 6%. There also was a $1 billion non-cash impairment loss due to goodwill and on the company’s FCC licenses. The loss was “driven by the impact of general market conditions, including comparable market valuations and the rising interest rate environment,...

Spanish-language giant TelevisaUnivision said it narrowed its fourth quarter loss from the year-earlier period as increases in ad revenue in Mexico helped buoy the company despite a downturn in the same category in the U.S. and its continued investment in streaming.
The company, which operates the Univision broadcast network in the U.S., said revenue in the quarter was off 7%, as gains in advertising were offset be declines in revenues from subscription and licensing. Revenue came to nearly $1.36 billion in the quarter, compared with nearly $1.46 billion in the year-earlier quarter.
The company’s net loss narrowed to $918.8 million from nearly $1.57 billion.

TelevisaUnivision powered to its highest third-quarter revenue total in the U.S. to date, up 5% year-over-year, as overall global revenue increased 11% to $1.28 billion.
The Spanish-language media company also touted growth of streaming service ViX to more than 40 million monthly active users and said the direct-to-consumer segment was on track to become profitable in mid-2024.
Q3 advertising revenue was up 11%, to $777 million, which TelevisaUnivision attributed to record-setting sales for the Concacaf Gold Cup soccer tournament and 20th anniversary of tentpole music awards show Premios Juventud, which aired July 20 from Puerto Rico. In the U.S., however, ad sales declined 1% year-over-year.
Subscription and licensing revenue jumped 18%, to $473 million. Growth in both the U.S. and Mexico was driven by ViX’s premium tier, pricing growth on linear subscribers and increased content licensing revenue driven by demand for ViX premium content. Exclusive: The upcoming documentary Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplains Journey has received the rare honor of a screening at the Vatican.
The film written and directed by Rich Hull and Justin D. Roberts – a former combat chaplain himself – is produced by Paulist Productions and the U.S. Army Chaplains Corps, marking the first ever co-production between Hollywood and the chaplains corps. Built around the story of Emil Kapaun, a combat chaplain who died as a prisoner of war in North Korea in 1953, the documentary examines the ultimate sacrifice made by hundreds of U.S. military combat chaplains.
Capt. Emil Kapaun (right) helps another soldier carry an exhausted soldier off the battlefield early in the Korean War.
“In 2021, when the remains of former Pow/Mia Army combat chaplain Emil Kapaun, possibly the Vatican’s next saint, are identified after 70 years, much of the nation is captivated by their journey home,” notes a description of the film.

TelevisaUnivision is speaking a different language in TV’s weakened upfront market.

Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision reported 6 percent U.S. revenue growth to $794 million for the second quarter, led by a 10 percent gain in subscription and licensing revenue and a 1 percent increase in advertising revenue.

The top news executive at Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision is stepping down.
Leopoldo Gómez, who has led the company’s news operations for the last two years, will “pursue other interests,” the company says. His interim replacement will be executive VP of news Maria Martinez-Guzman, a 25 year veteran of Univision.
“Leopoldo has had an immense impact on our News division in the last two years,” TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis said in a statement. “We have benefited from his expertise and in-depth knowledge of the news making process. We are saddened to see him go but understand his decision.”
Before Univision Noticias, Gómez worked for 23 years at Televisa, including as VP of news.

Three studios and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences laid off or lost top diversity execs in the past 10 days, which gives the impression that the industry is placing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (Dei) on the back-burner.
The drive for diversity that picked up prominence with 2020’s Black Lives Matter movement seems to have run its course after just three years.
Were these roles merely lip service all along? As “A Black Lady Sketch Show” actress Yvette Nicole Brown tweeted, “I guess all those black boxes after George Floyd was murdered were for nothing,” referencing 2020’s social media blackout that was supposed to be in support of the BLM movement.

Warner Bros. Discovery is laying off Karen Horne, a diversity, equity and inclusion executive, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Horne’s departure is not a result of cost-cutting measures, according to a memo sent by Warner Bros. Discovery’s chief global diversity, equity and inclusion officer Asif Sadiq, but is rather due to reorganization of the division, which is meant to focus more on “employee-related initiatives.” The Dei team will search for a new group vp to oversee North America and employee Dei initiatives and a new group vp internationally, resulting in an expansion of the team.
“Importantly, these changes do not alter our commitment to or our plans for pipeline programs and content-driven initiatives — these are fundamental pillars of our DE&I strategy and will continue to be areas of investment and focus,” Sadiq said in the memo.
However, the layoff comes amid a trend of departures from Dei positions in the industry.

Horne’s departure was announced internally on Wednesday, per an L.A. Times report published Friday. She was SVP of diversity, equity and inclusion in North America, having joined the company in March 2020.

Gillian Anderson has been cast in Netflix’s Western drama series “The Abandons” from creator Kurt Sutter.
Anderson will play Constance, the matriarch of the wealthy Van Ness family who doubled the mining fortune she inherited from her husband. Her wealth, charm and power allowed her to forge relationships with political allies despite their town’s patriarchal bias.
The official Netflix logline for the show reads, “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. Spanish-tv giant TelevisaUnivsion wants to speak a different language than its English-speaking rivals when it comes to audience measurement.
Under pressure from some media companies, Nielsen said in April that it was going to hold back a new product that sought to use “big data,” or audience information gleaned from set-top boxes and smart TVs, as a way to provide more granular information about viewers. Nielsen said the new data would not be accredited for mainstream use, but would be available “for additional measurement during this transition for clients seeking to transact on it.”
TelevisaUnivision is going to try. “We all know that today’s TV measurement is inadequate for our multi-screen world, and as a consequence, U.S Hispanics have been undercounted,” says Donna Speciale, president of U.S. ad sales and marketing at the company. “In fact, our audience is 26% bigger than current measurement. If you’re a customer of the Spanish-language streaming platform ViX, or its premium tier ViX+, you’ll soon notice a few changes to the user interface you’ve become accustomed to.

ViX is dropping the plus sign from its branding. Henceforward, its free streaming tier will continue to be styled “ViX,” while its paid subscription tier will be named “ViX Premium.” There will be no discontinuation of either tier, and the content offerings on the two plans will remain the same.
According to Deadline, TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis told Wall Street analysts that the rebranding decision came after a monthslong period of evaluation. The results of that evaluation pointed clearly to the success of the two-tiered pricing model, but it also showed that customers were experiencing some confusion over the ViX+ name.

TelevisaUnivision, which rolled out a two-tiered streaming offering under the Vix and Vix+ brands in 2022, is unifying them under the Vix banner.
The ditching of the “plus,” a ubiquitous symbol in streaming, is not accompanied by a change in strategy in terms of providing both a free, ad-supported tier and a paid, premium one. The Spanish-language media giant made the announcement as it reported soft results for the first quarter due to a slowdown in advertising hitting companies across the media and tech sectors over the past few months.
Revenue inched up 6% to $1.1 billion, though U.S. advertising grew just 2%. Reporting on a pro forma basis, the company said operating income before depreciation and amortization fell 10% from the 2022 quarter to $361 million.

Spanish-language TV giant TelevisaUnivision swung to a loss in the first quarter, on higher overall revenues.
But the net loss of $3 million for the three months to March 31, against a year-earlier profit of $36 million, was far narrower than the most recent fourth quarter of $1.59 billion due to a steep $1.66 billion non-cash impairment loss, mainly on its goodwill.
Overall revenue grew 6 percent to $1.1 billion during the latest quarter, as TelevisaUnivision included a full first quarter of ViX subscription revenue that the company did not break out in sign-ups. ViX launched in July in the U.S., Mexico and Latin America as the largest Spanish-language streaming service worldwide.

Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision saw a 22% jump in pro-forma revenue for the fourth quarter in 2022, boosted by its 2022 FIFA World Cup coverage and midterm political ad spending.

There’s significant movement in the evolution of premium video advertising’s “currency.”
On Monday, OpenAP, the advanced advertising firm founded by the owners of most of the large TV networks, says that it will create a joint industry committee to focus on premium video currency, with the intent to have multiple currency options in place ahead of the 2024 upfront.

TelevisaUnivision still believes its newly launched streaming product will achieve profitability by the end of next year, a position that CEO Wade Davis noted puts it in contrast to other streaming giants.
Speaking on the company’s third-quarter earnings call Thursday, Davis said other streamers, on average, see peak losses about three years after launch and eventually reach profitability after about six years.
“We’re in year zero. We just launched the streaming service. It’ll be live for less than half of the year and our peak losses will occur this year,” Davis said, adding that the company plans to reduce the losses over the course of 2023.
TelevisaUnivision launched ViX+, the company’s subscription-streaming platform, on July 21, and ViX, the free, ad-supported streaming service in late March.
The Spanish-language media giant, which completed its 4.8 billion merger in late January 2022, did not disclose subscriber numbers for either service,...

Privately held Hispanic media giant TelevisaUnivision reported a 5 uptick in third-quarter revenue, to 1.2 billion, but said investments in streaming caused operating income to dip 4.
The comparisons were offered on a pro-forma basis, given that the company has existed for less than a full year. Univision, which was acquired by a consortium of private investors led by Davis in 2020, merged with the media and production arm of Mexican telecom provider Grupo Televisa in January 2022.
Advertising paced the overall revenue increase, growing 6 due to higher upfront volume and pricing as well as an increase in the number of new advertisers. A 10 increase in operating expenses, to 741 million, was mostly due to investments in subscription streaming outlet Vix+ as well as free, ad-supported companion service Vix.
While streaming, not surprisingly, was a major theme during the company’s conference call with analysts, CEO Wade Davis demurred when he was asked for initial subscriber or active user stats.

TelevisaUnivision has elevated company veteran Ignacio “Nacho” Meyer to the role of president of U.S. networks.
The Miami-based exec will report to CEO Wade Davis. His promotion is aimed at helping the company bolster its exec roster in the wake of the departure last spring of Luis Silberwasser. The exec left his post as president of TelevisaUnision’s television networks group to become CEO of Warner Bros Discovery Sports.
TelevisaUnivision’s brand has existed only since the closing several months ago of a 4.8 merger between Univision and the entertainment arm of Mexico’s Grupo Televisa. Davis, a former Viacom executive, led a consortium of private investors that prevailed in bidding for Univision prior to its combination with Televisa.
In more than a decade at TelevisaUnivision and Univision, Meyer held various exec positions. Most recently, he led the music and non-scripted entertainment division. He had previously overseen the strategic business efforts of the music,...

Meyer will take on a role that had previously been under the aegis of Luis Silberwasser, who decamped to Warner Bros. Discovery to lead its sports business.
“I am excited and energized for what’s to come under Nacho’s leadership and guidance,” said Davis, in a prepared statement. “Throughout his career at the company, Nacho has helped to cement Univision as a key partner to the entertainment, and Latin music ecosystem, super-serving audiences, building business opportunities, bringing to life today’s best productions, with the biggest artists and tomorrow’s rising stars across the record-setting network TV properties, adrenaline-fueled events, and fast-growing digital platforms.”

Six weeks into the launch of subscription streaming service ViX+, TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis already has a compelling case for why the company’s streaming service stands out from competitors.
“We believe we can deliver a profitable streaming service within the first year of operation,” Davis said.
Speaking at the Bank of America Securities 2022 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference Wednesday, Davis outlined the factors that differentiate ViX+, which launched on July 21, as well as ViX, the company’s free ad-supported streaming service that launched in late March, from others.
To begin, TelevisaUnivision has the benefit of a vast library of content thanks to the Janaury 2022 merger with Televisa, which provided most of Univision’s content pre-merger. The content the company produces is vertically integrated and made in low-cost locations. Further, TelevisaUnivision is only focused on Spanish-language markets, so it does not need to own...

In its first full quarter of results, TelevisaUnivision reported a modest uptick in revenue and reiterated its belief in having a unique market opportunity, though its adjusted income faltered due to investments in streaming.
The earnings report reflected operations during the quarter ending June 30. On January 31, Univision and the media division of Mexico-based Televisa completed a 4.8 billion merger, creating the world’s top Spanish-language media company and keeping it privately held. That transaction followed the December 2020 close of the acquisition of a controlling stake in Univision by a consortium of investors. Quarterly comparisons with the year-ago period were made on a pro-forma basis.
Revenue in the quarter ticked up 7 to 747.5 million. Adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization slipped 8 from a year ago to 373.3 million. The company noted the hit to the bottom line created by an investment in streaming, though CEO Wade Davis has also emphasized that the company...
