In his home office in Nashville, Cidny Bullens glances at a photo perched behind him: a young, pouty-faced 28-year-old in a Superman T-shirt, cradling an electric guitar. “I look at me as a different person,” says Bullens, who now sports short hair and a wisp of a mustache. “I don’t say, ‘Oh, that’s a great picture.’ It’s like an entity, you know.”

Maggie Thrett, the actress and singer who most memorably played Ruth in the “Mudd’s Women” episode of the original Star Trek, has died her family announced. She was 76.
“Mudd’s Women” is one of the most memorable episodes of the 1960s Star Trek, in no small part because it featured three stunningly beautiful women who seem to have strange powers over the male members of the Enterprise crew — except Spock, of course.

“Jersey Boys” is coming to a close on Broadway early next year, when “Dancing With the Stars” alum Mark Ballas will take the final bow in the iconic role of Frankie Valli. Ballas takes over on October 18 — unfortunately, the long-running musical about the Four Seasons will shutter Sunday, January 15, 2017 after 4,642 performances at the August Wilson Theatre. It’ll cap an impressive 11 years for the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning Best Musical. Mauricio Pérez will continue to play the Valli role for certain performances during the week. Dominic Scaglione Jr.’s final performance as the lead will be Oct. 16. Also Read: Bob Crewe,...

Fade in on a boy talking to the camera, and you can already tell that this is a tired film. Helmed by Clint Eastwood (working behind the screen only, this time), Jersey Boys is a film adapted from the hit Broadway jukebox musical. It tells the origin story of The Four Seasons, their rise to fame, and the self-destruction of their personal lives. It’s a tale as old as showbiz, and this film shows a desperate lack of originality. The boy talking to us, giving us unnecessary narrative set-up (and not even doing it particularly well) is Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza). He introduces us to his brother Nicky (Johnny Cannizzaro), their friend Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) who performs in a musical trio with them, and a wannabe singer named Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young). The boys, as boys in Jersey are wont to do, get caught up in gangster...

Bob Crewe, the writer-producer behind Frankie Valli‘s biggest hits, has died. He was 82. The cause of his death was undisclosed, but Crewe has been in poor condition and was unable to attend the film premiere of “Jersey Boys” in June. The producer, who inspired the role played by Mike Doyle in the Clint Eastwood-direct film version of the Broadway musical, helped co-write hits such as “Rag Doll,” “Sherry Baby,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.” His other hits include Patti Labelle's “Lady Marmalade” and Mitch Ryder's “Devil with Blue Dress On.

Before The Beatles came to our shores in the mid-1960s, I don’t think there was a bigger rock band in America than The Four Seasons. The Four Seasons are one of the best-selling musical groups of all time, having sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide. The story of the band’s formation, success, and their eventual break-up has already been dramatized in Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, a jukebox musical which debuted on Broadway in 2005. And now that musical has been brought from the stage to the screen. The new movie Jersey Boys is a lot of fun and quite entertaining, but unfortunately the film suffers from narrative and structural issues that prevent it from reaching its full potential.

‘Jersey Boys’ movie review: Great music fails to save Clint Eastwood-directed film version of the 2005 Broadway musical (photo: John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons in ‘Jersey Boys’) Clint Eastwood’s semi-historically accurate biopic of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Jersey Boys, is based on the hit 2005 Broadway musical — and it is a crushing bore. But we shall start with the positive: In Eastwood’s film, the music and the performances of the music (which are not the same thing) are great. That is to be expected, as the Jersey Boys movie cast is mostly composed from cast members of the stage show, including Tony winner John Lloyd Young, who happens to look a lot like Frankie Valli and who has a four-plus octave range. Lucky boy. Lloyd Young is also a serviceable actor with a number of (mostly stage) credits that did not require a piercing falsetto.

Jersey Show: Eastwood Plays It Safe with Broadway Adaptation
While it earns a great deal of credibility due to the retention of several notable cast members that originated their roles on Broadway, Clint Eastwood’s cinematic treatment of musical Jersey Boys plays it safe in nearly every possible regard. Hardly the musical extravaganza those unfamiliar with the source material may be expecting, it is neither a very clearly nuanced effort at relating anything in depth about Franki Valli and his Four Seasons. Instead, it’s more like a blandly realized version of what one would expect to see on stage, with a screenplay that does little to enhance anything beyond moderately digestible clichés (something quite surprising to note when one of the co-writers is Marshall Brickman, who penned Woody Allen’s Annie Hall and Manhattan).

It’s hard to describe Clint Eastwood’s late-period directorial output without using the same words that apply to the hardboiled and callused gunslingers that made him famous. Stoic, steady, and assured are all useful qualities for someone looking to make staid historical dramas like J. Edgar, or a throwback like Gran Torino. But words like “spirited” and “energetic” are often strangers to Eastwood’s cinematic vocabulary, so asking him to make a musical was going to be a challenge from the start. When that musical happens to be Jersey Boys, a Broadway smash ill-suited for a film adaptation, both Eastwood’s and the source material’s limitations layer over one another like Frankie Valli’s voice on an 8-track, harmonizing into a 2-hour-plus slog through a dusty record collection.

When a film begins you have to give yourself over to it or you will never enjoy something that seems outside your immediate interest. Walking into Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys this was exactly my approach. I even told some people around me I didn't even really want to see it, not because I felt it would be bad, in fact, I thought it would be entirely passable, but trips to the theater to see "passable" movies aren't exactly what we're looking for, especially when they're lacking in energy as this movie is. That said, in my attempt to give myself over, even as the characters (yes, plural) started breaking the fourth wall in the first scene, I stuck with it. I laughed at Christopher Walken being Christopher Walken as he played Jersey mobster Angelo 'Gyp' DeCarlo and I had a fun time trying to figure out just who exactly...

If Hollywood blockbusters are currently crippled by fear of the unknown, Broadway musicals – an ever-increasing number of them based on Hollywood blockbusters – are hardly less guilty. The jukebox musical is, if you will, the Great White Way's superhero reboot: their safest gambit, removing the greatest variable in a genre that has, after all, always been reliant on existing story material. Who needs composers when perfectly good popular discographies are there for the taking? “Jersey Boys” was a swift hit when it opened on Broadway in 2005; credit zesty staging or a tidily structured book if you will, but it's a show that owes its pull to one of the most buoyant American songbooks in Top 40 history. Those creamy harmonies, those tightly syncopated choruses, that unearthly falsetto: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons hadn't the artistic reach of contemporaries like The Beatles, nor the cool strut of the Detroit acts to which...

Rick Santorum joins March for Marriage, Ryan Murphy honored as genius, Mark Hamill imagine conversation between Luke Skywalker and The Joker
It turns out that President Obama is a fan of The Normal Heart, so much so that he called up Ryan Murphy to congratulate him on the film and ask about the journey of getting it made. Okay I admit it, I'm a showtunes queen! I love Broadway and musicals, good musicals, that is. And I think "Jersey Boys" is a good musical. The rugs-to-riches tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is captivating and the soundtrack rocks!
And now comes the inevitable movie version, and to be honest? It actually looks good! Director Clint Eastwood added some grittiness to the Broadway gloss and voila -- a musical that will steal our hearts this summer, June 20th to be exact! Oh, plus points for adding Christopher Walken to the mix! Will he sing? Or at least dance?
Take a look at the new "Jersey Boys" trailer and then sing with the soundtrack:

Earlier this month we published a list of 20 cover songs that became more famous than the originals. From Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" to Sinead O'Connor's breathy remake of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U," the list scanned some of the best renditions in music history.
There's another realm of cover songs we didn't include in the last post, however, which is where our list of unexpected covers comes in. We've put together the strangest and most unpredictable song selections of artists like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Dusty Springfield. Scroll through the list below and let us know your thoughts on the world of reimagined tunes in the comments.

Pardon me? In one of those weird twists of Hollywood casting (and crewing?), Variety reports that a well-regarded director (Jon Favreau) is the frontrunner to helm a beloved property (the cinematic adaptation of hit musical Jersey Boys) in a combination that just doesn’t make one goddamn lick of sense. Favs? A musical? Wha-what? While the Iron Man and Iron Man 2 helmer certainly knows how to juggle a lot of big pieces in his productions, I can’t say that I ever thought song-and-dance numbers would be one of them, and I sure as hell can’t say I am sold on this idea. The Tony and Grammy-winning hit musical Jersey Boys (originally produced by Dodger Theatricals, written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, directed by Des McAnuff, with music by Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe) was officially announced back in January, with Hugo scribe John Logan set to adapt it...

It’s hard to believe that it took so long for someone to adapt the hit musical Jersey Boys, but now Gk Films has found the person to pen the screenplay. Hugo Scribe John Logan has been brought in to write the movie adaptation of the musical about the lives of one of the most popular 1960’s pop groups, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, reports comingsoon.net. The story will focus on h ow a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks would go on to become one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. Gk Films has partnered up with Columbia Pictures to produce the project with Columbia Pictures handling the worldwide distribution of the movie.

It’s not often that word of a large-scale adaptation of an existing theatrical property thrills me to my absolute core, but I am willing to forget all the weird Les Miserables Starring Country Pop Star Taylor Swift talk if this next project works out as well as it should. Word about a cinematic adaptation of the Tony and Grammy-winning hit musical Jersey Boys (originally produced by Dodger Theatricals, written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, directed by Des McAnuff, with music by Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe) has been brewing for awhile, and it’s such a welcome concept for a film that I might actually be dancing in my chair right now. The musical centers on the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and their incredible rise to fame in the 1960s, and it’s one of those rare musicals that deserves all the heaping and glittery praise...

Kyle Richards is a 21 year old college dropout whose desire to direct films got the better of him. He is currently on post production on Amateur Monster Movie, a film that got made for virtually nothing, but with a lot of heart and passionate people behind it. Amateur Monster Movie gives new relevance to the term micro budget film. Anyway, we asked Kyle a few questions about Amateur Monster Movie. Here's what he had to say.
So for those unfamiliar with you, who is Kyle Richards and what are you all about?
I am Kyle Richards and I dropped out of college to make a movie about zombies with no money. I consider myself pretty smart for thinking of that brilliant plan.
I suppose, to overly generalize myself, I'm all about making movies. And I'm lucky to have a dedicated group of friends who have stuck by me for years to do just that.
