When Russell T Davies’ Queer as Folk arrived in the U.K. in 1999, the series marked a turning point for the depiction of gay life on TV as the drama about a group of friends became the first to focus exclusively on the LGBTQ community.
Two years later, Showtime followed in the U.S. when Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman (the now-married writers of the 1985 AIDS drama An Early Frost) adapted Davies’ beloved series. Outliving the British original (1999-2000), it ran for five seasons, from 2000 to 2005.
Now, nearly a quarter of a century after both, Peacock will break new ground June 9 with its take on Davies’ iconic series. From creator Stephen Dunn (Closet Monster), the new incarnation is an updated-for-2022 reimagining of Davies’ original. The new show (with Davies as an exec producer) is the most diverse of all three and features innovative...

LGBT TV movies, series and specials are part of our cultural landscape. They are frequently awarded with Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. But this acceptance was a long time coming. Here’s a look back at the landmark telefilms that paved the way.
Do you know the first TV movie that featured a gay character? No, it wasn’t 1972’s “That Certain Summer.”
It was a drama called “South” that was produced by England’s ITV and aired on that network on Nov. 24, 1959. Set in the Antebellum South, the drama revolved around a handsome Polish army lieutenant living in the South who is torn between his love for a plantation owner’s niece or a hunky blond officer. “South” was incredibly daring for its time, especially since it would be eight years before homosexuality was legalized in England and Wales with the passing of the Sexual Offences...

Seven years before the world met Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha, there were four other women talking frankly about sex and relationships each week on TV. Sisters, which ran on NBC from 1991 to '96, chronicled the lives of the Reeds: Alex (Swoosie Kurtz), Teddy (Sela Ward), Georgie (Patricia Kalember), and Frankie (Julianne Phillips). Though the show has never been released on DVD or streaming, it has a devoted cult of fans with warm memories of the siblings who fought hard—Teddy once spray-painted "slut" on Frankie's car—but always had each other's backs. Sisters was mired in controversy even before it aired.

What were you doing 20 years ago today? Perhaps preparing to watch a new NBC drama called 'Sisters'?
It was two decades ago that the Emmy-winning series premiered, earning critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase, while helping to launch the careers of up-and-comers like Ashley Judd and Paul Rudd. The series also earned a certain TV pilot veteran his shot at another TV drama that would send him on the path to big-screen stardom and an Oscar.
The show -- created by producers Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman, who also created the U.S. adaptation of 'Queer As Folk' -- revolved around the four sisters of the Reed family, daughters of a workaholic, adulterous doctor who referred to his girls by male names (because he had wanted sons) and an alcoholic mother who'd turned to the bottle to deal with her physically and emotionally Mia husband.
