It's almost unfathomable to think about how long James Bond movies have been around, but after six decades and seven different incarnations of the character, the series is an absolute cinematic treasure. Not only are the films some of the most beloved throughout history, but the music has also been consistently phenomenal, so much so that /Film's own Jeremy Smith considers the music to be the most powerful throughline of the whole franchise. The most recent Bond film, "No Time To Die," marked the farewell of Daniel Craig as the titular character, and brought on sadgirl pop sensation Billie Eilish to perform the titular track. Eilish's eponymous theme nabbed her a Grammy, Golden Globe, and an Academy Award, allowing the final three Daniel Craig Bond films an Oscar hat trick for "Best Original Song."
As it turns out, Eilish almost didn't get the Bond gig, as musician and "Game of Thrones...

Rock ‘n’ roll bands, we’re told, are the closest and most combative of families. They come up in the world together, they eat and sleep and ride a tour bus together, they haunt the recording studio together, they become experts in how to manipulate (and shield themselves from) the media together, and, in a funny way, they break up together. But in 1970, Joe Cocker fronted a band of virtuoso ruffians called Mad Dogs & Englishmen, who put on some of the most musically rambunctious and cathartic concerts of their time, and the strange thing is that the band members barely knew each other.
In 1969, Cocker had made a splash at Woodstock — it was the first time almost anyone had seen his writhing British blues-dog self — and after riding that buzz for a while, he fired his band out from under him and tried to take a break. But an American...

Ahead of his new album Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol. 1, due January 8th, Barry Gibb has released another track off the project: a collaboration with Dolly Parton on “Words.” Originally released as a single by the Bee Gees in 1968, the song was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb.
Parton kicks off this particularly tender version of “Words,” singing the first verse about hoping to start “a brand new story” over plaintive piano. Gibb comes in soon after, and he and Parton take the song to its finish, with...

By 1973, singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson had starred in a handful of feature film roles, playing outlaw Billy the Kid in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, which also co-starred Bob Dylan. That same year, just after her 14th birthday, Marie Osmond, of the performing Osmond clan, launched her recording career, becoming the youngest female act to hit Number One on the country chart with her song “Paper Roses.” Although their career (and, indeed, personal) trajectories couldn’t be more divergent, the paths of Kristofferson and Osmond, along with her teen-idol brother Donny,...

The 1970s were, arguably, the golden age of classic TV Christmas specials. Before variety shows and specials all but disappeared from the lineups of the three major networks (and before cable TV took over and shrank network viewership), each holiday season brought forth highly rated variety specials to please nearly everyone from 1 to 92. The four Johnny Cash Christmas specials, which ran every year on CBS from 1976-1979, were certainly no exception.

The Bond title sequences are an important tradition for the franchise. Join us as we count them down from worst to best.
The title sequence is a trademark of the Bond franchise. It sets the tone for the film while using artistry to bring important themes and ideas to audience’s periphery. It’s more than just guns and girls, it’s a calling card that gives the Bond films a sophistication and uniqueness that its competitors and impostors lack. Through the years, these sequences have become more complicated and sophisticated, but the goal is the same: wow the audience.
Below we've listed the title sequences of all of the Eon Productions/MGM Studios films from worst to best based on the following criteria:
Song Rating = How good/memorable is the song?
Creativity = Have we seen it before?
Wow-Factor = The impact on the viewer.
Execution = How well made is it...

Let’s face it. The songs are the best parts of the James Bond movies. Throughout 007’s five decades, the title tracks are each film’s one hope of rising above dubious casting choices, retreads of old villains, and grandiose plots for world domination that will inevitably be foiled. And like all that other stuff, we like the songs because they’re another expected element in a series that’s filled with them, a pop cultural barometer for measuring the secret agent’s standing in the zeitgeist.
Bond songs can be aged bygones of their time with poetically vague lyrics that don’t add up to much, but the best ones rise above their period trappings to comment and reflect on their respective films. With Spectre set to hit American theaters this week, let’s look back at each and every title song in Metro Golden Mayer’s canon:

James Bond is finally back in Spectre and, like all Bond films, it boasts a high-profile theme tune from an artist-of-the-moment. But where does Sam Smith sit in the illustrious ranks of Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney and Rita Coolidge (!)? Roger Moore's second to last outing as James Bond is better than you remember.
This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.
After the comedown of For Your Eyes Only, the James Bond series is back on a high. Octopussy is a good-natured, occasionally thrilling escapade that boasts an impressive roster of villains, a finely developed heroine, unusually meaty roles for series stalwarts General Gogol and Q, a nuclear bomb and a gloriously stupid title. Yes, Roger Moore has aged to the point where counting the wrinkles is a legitimate distraction. And many valid criticisms can be levelled about plot and credibility. But the good outweighs, or certainly overwhelms, the bad in Octopussy.
Still, he really should have quit after this one.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!

Ignoring the 1954 American television version of Casino Royale (and one really should), it’s been 50 years this month since James Bond first graced the silver screen and entered the world’s consciousness and collective hearts. Created by author and former secret service agent Ian Fleming, Bond was a Commander in Her Majesty’s Royal Navy who became a Double-o agent of MI6. He’s a spy who kills and loves without conscience, suave yet deadly. The classic cliché of a man who women want and men want to be. Six actors and twenty-two official movies later, and Bond is still just as popular. And now, Capitol Records and MGM Music have released a new album filled with all sorts of musical goodies from those films.
The two-disc set starts off with The John Barry Orchestra performing the now iconic “James Bond Theme”, which is just as exciting to listen to...

After Adele's Bond theme failed to top the charts, we wonder if all Bond themes are commercially cursed
There were high hopes for Adele's theme song to the new James Bond film, Skyfall – not least the expectation that this would be the first 007 signature track to top the UK charts. It's not as if a number one chart position has been a problem for the multi-award winning Adele, after all.
Yet it seems the singer may have been struck down by what many regard as a Bond-related curse. Skyfall only reached number two in this week's charts, and was held off top spot by Swedish House Mafia, of all people. Here are a few past Bond themes that also failed to make it to the top of the charts – and a few that didn't make them at all ...

The Bond franchise is perhaps the only film property where just as much anticipation is placed on of the theme song as much as the film itself. The decades-long tradition of enlisting the biggest pop acts on the planet to pen a retro-infused, string accompanied pop themes continues with the soon to be released "Skyfall" single from Adele this week.
In honor of 007 scoring the "Rolling in the Deep" singer to croon tales of his mischief, here's a look back at some of the best and worst Bond themes ever according to some guy on the internet.
The Best

Nancy Sinatra's other hit, this song is one of the great examples that define the Bond theme: the marriage of tense and complex score with simple and sweet pop melodies.

James Bond might be on Her Majesty's secret service, but he's done a terrible job keeping the details of his newest theme song hush-hush.
It was teased earlier this month that Adele will be singing "Skyfall's" theme. Though the team behind the latest 007 film have yet to confirm the news, now Showbiz 411 has actually heard part of the tune and can confirm it's fantastic.
Titled "Let The Sky Fall," the single is described as an "ominous, dramatic ballad" that shows off Adele's "now trademark vocals." The chorus of the song goes, "Let the sky fall/Let it crumble/We will stand tall/And face it all/together.”
The song opens with a piano solo, and the opening lyrics are reportedly, “This is the end/Hold your breath and count to ten/Feel the Earth move and then/Hear my heart burst again.”

While the producers of "Skyfall" have been pretty good at keeping details tightly guarded, one of the worst kept secrets around the production was who was going be singing the theme song for the movie. Adele had been tipped for months, and being a Brit herself, and coming off a six-Grammy win earlier this year, it would almost be a crime if she didn't do it. And alas, Showbiz 411 confirms she'll be singing the song that we presume she'll be writing as well. The choices of performers for the songs in Bond flicks have always been a bit all over the map, with folks like a-ha, Lulu, Rita Coolidge, Shirley Bassey, Jack White and Alicia Keys, Carly Simon, and Paul McCartney & Wings all tuning up 007's adventures over the years. But we'd wager that Adele's contribution will fall into the category of songs that will stand up long after the...

If you thought last weekend's double dose of '80s movies "Rock Of Ages" and "That's My Boy" were going to be the last gasps of the decade this summer at the multiplex, guess again. Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" is around the corner, and believe it or not, it's bringing a healthy does of the '80s -- along with a bit of '70s and '90s -- along for the ride.
While the official soundtrack (via Film Music Reporter) leans heavily towards the score by Walter Murphy, we've gotten our hands on the full list of songs in the film and the biggest standout is how many classic cuts from seminal scores are featured. This thing must've cost a pretty penny. Tracks from "Star Wars," "Raiders Of The Lost Ark," "Octopussy," and even "How To Steal A Million" are all featured along with a handful of songs from Queen's score to "Flash Gordon.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
For Octopussy, the thirteenth official James Bond film, 1983 proved to be rather unlucky. After a lengthy court battle with the co-writer of Thunderball, Kevin McClory, Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions had lost the right to use Bond’s nemesis Blofeld and his organisation Spectre in any of their films. McClory had been trying since 1974 to get his own rival Bond film made but due to a lack of financial backing and legal action from United Artists and the Fleming Trustees his project...

Throughout the month of December, TV Editor Kate Kulzick and Film Editor Ricky D will review classic Christmas adaptions, posting a total of 13 each, one a day, until the 25th of December.
The catch: They will swap roles as Rick will take on reviews of classic television Christmas specials and Kate will take on Christmas movies. Today is day 11.
The Christmas Raccoons (1980)
Directors: Kevin Gillis and Paul Schibli
Writer: Juliet Packer

There are a few things you need to get right if you're going to make a movie set in the '80s: the fashion, the lingo and, without question, the music.
Every classic "Hey, weren't the '80s wacky?" film has leaned heavily on its soundtrack, and the folks behind the upcoming indie flick and Toronto Film Festival favorite "Dirty Girl" have apparently been taking notes. The soundtrack to the movie is stocked with pop cheese that will set off pastel-hued flashbacks in nostalgia buffs and entertain anyone who's into the whole yacht-rock revival that seems to be going on these days.
The first thing you'll notice about the "Dirty Girl" soundtrack, however, is how heavy it leans on a relatively obscure pop singer named Melissa Manchester. A favorite of one of the movie's central characters, Manchester lands five of the album's 14 tracks, including her best-known song, the 1982 No. 5 hit...

One of the true musical greats, composer John Barry, passed away over the weekend in New York City. He was 77.
At the start of the 1960's, Barry was brought on to re-arrange Monty Norman's theme for “Dr. No”, the first James Bond film. The resulting tune remains one of the most famous pieces of film music to have ever been produced, and Barry's signature and easily identifiable style became synonymous with the series.
Barry ultimately scored eleven of the twenty-two Bond films including "From Russia with Love," "Goldfinger," "Thunderball," "You Only Live Twice," "Diamonds are Forever," "The Man with the Golden Gun," "Moonraker," Octopussy," "A View to A Kill," "The Living Daylights" and arguably his most revered score - "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (which itself heavily inspired Michael Giacchino's "The Incredibles" score).

Dawn McCarthy of Faun Fables does some serious straddling. On one hand, she's affiliated with the avant-folk ensemble Sleepytime Gorilla Musuem, whose Nils Frykdahl is also a member of her band; on the other, she's lately been playing Rita Coolidge to Will Oldham's Kris Kristofferson (minus, presumably, the kissing and stuff). Her own material leans toward the former: Twisted and bittersweet, Faun Fables' A Table Forgotten is a four-song concept Ep about the psychic tides of home and hearth. Domestication might not seem like the edgiest subject matter—and indeed, tracks like "With Words & Cake" and "Pictures" come across more like art-school projects than warm reminiscences. But the tension McCarthy creates between intellect and sentiment is stunning: The disc's title track is a veritable prairie-opera combining acoustic guitars, woodwinds, Nico-esque iciness, and earth-toned sketches of candlelit meals in bucolic kitchens. The closer, "Winter Sleep," strays from the concept—it.
