Alfred Hitchcock puts Jane Wyman in harm’s way, as she tries to rescue her unworthy boyfriend Richard Todd from a murder charge. Is Jane proving her love, or are both of them being manipulated by a scheming actress, Marlene Dietrich? This is the movie in which Hitch inflicts a ‘frump complex’ on Ms. Wyman — she looks demoralized whenever she shares the screen with Dietrich. It’s also the movie that ponders the cinematic concept of ‘The Lying Flashback,’ which made perfect sense to Hitchcock but frustrated his audience. Also starring Michael Wilding, Alastair Sim and a cherry-picked list of English acting royalty.

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

The latest attempt to bring Alfred Hitchcock's life to the screen paints the Master as a crafty hoodwinker triumphing over drab studio execs
F Scott Fitzgerald claimed that, back in 1920, he'd tried to persuade Dw Griffith that the film industry was a wonderful subject for the cinema. Griffith laughed at the idea, but not for the first time Fitzgerald was proved right. He went on to write a series of stories and a great unfinished novel on Hollywood, and since the silent era there has been no end to the making of movies about movie-making. Particular interest has recently been shown in Alfred Hitchcock, one of only two movie directors whose faces are immediately recognisable to popular audiences the world over. The other, of course, is Hitchcock's fellow working-class Londoner, Charlie Chaplin.

This shallow, naive biopic of the Master has had its thunder totally stolen by the far superior recent TV film
Here is a film that looks worryingly like the world's longest awards ceremony clip, featuring famous Hollywood figures dressing up as other famous Hollywood figures in the clear expectation of silverware. It is about Alfred Hitchcock making his pulp-nightmare masterpiece Psycho, a career departure on which he gambled his reputation and, indeed, his own money. The result is self-conscious and unsatisfying: a shallow and naive celebratory biopic.
Anthony Hopkins climbs into the fat suit and latex jowls to impersonate the master; Helen Mirren does a routine job as his wife and unsung collaborator Alma Reville; Scarlett Johansson gives a creamy and bland turn as Janet Leigh – though James D'Arcy is certainly an eerily precise Anthony Perkins. This movie's problem is that it has been upstaged and outclassed – and its confected...

How much should likeness play into a performance? This is a question I found myself wrestling with when watching Sacha Gervasi’s (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) biopic of arguably the greatest filmmaker who has ever lived, The Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock.
Even if the script were in place – which it isn’t – there’s a troubling extravagance in the peculiarly Oscar-nominated make-up job Anthony Hopkins is subjected to, which renders him virtually unrecognisable, but also stifles his performance and prevents it from amounting to anything more than Anthony Hopkins playing himself while trying to play Alfred Hitchcock.
Though the film centers around the relationship between Hitch and his wife, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren), as they begin production on the director’s most famous film, Psycho, Gervasi eschews an intimate examination of the director’s methods and personality in favour of documenting the childish...

The title of this so-called biopic is somewhat misleading, as Sacha Gervasi’s take on the great British filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock is more a study of a particular section of his life, as we delve into his marriage with wife Alma Reville amidst the making of his seminal feature Psycho.
Such an approach certainly proves to be less overbearing as it allows the audience a chance to learn a lot about a short period of his life, rather than learning very little about the whole thing.
Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of Hitchcock, who is struggling to find the funding for his latest, and rather controversial, project Psycho. Despite his untarnished reputation in Hollywood, Hitchcock is finding it difficult to persuade Paramount to support his movie, regardless of his agent’s (Michael Stuhlbarg) best efforts. However when he and his wife Alma (Helen Mirren) decide to fund the picture themselves,...

Hitchcock
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson
Directed by Sacha Gervassi
Rated PG-13
When we all heard that Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren were making a biopic of legendary director Alfred Hitchcock, I think we all assumed it would be a winner. The big problem is, the filmmakers seemed to have just assumed it, too.
The film focuses on the director starting with the release of North by Northwest and covers the making of his most controversial film: Psycho. And it wasn't only controversial because of its content. It may seem strange in a time where Psycho is his best known film, but for a filmmaker as revered as he was to make a gritty slasher about a transvestite serial killer felt a bit like if it were announced that Christopher Nolan were directing a remake of Showgirls. It was so strange the plan was enough to throw his entire reputation into question.

Alfred Hitchcock’s fixation with the icy blondes who populated his films (Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, and most infamously, Tippi Hedren) is well-documented, but less-known are the details of the director’s 50-year marriage to his story editor Alma Reville. The new film Hitchcock explores the relationship between Hitch and Alma with Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren in the roles and sets it against the filming of their terrifying 1960 classic Psycho. With this movie-buff’s dream premise, this cast, a smart script by John McLaughlin (Black Swan), and a sly score by Danny Elfman, you’d think this project could direct itself but they handed the reins to newcomer Sascha Gervasi, whose only previous film was the rock doc Anvil! The Story Of Anvil (read my review Here). The result is a film that falls short of the greatness I think it could have achieved if a more visionary director...

Hitch Hunch: Gervasi’s Superficial Biopic a Wan Trifle
Auteur theory is at last informing the very subject matter of our cinema, it seems, with Sacha Gervasi’s directorial debut, Hitchcock reminding us of our fascination with one of the greatest masters of the medium ever to exist. Just as Truffaut trumpeted his gushy admiration for the master of suspense decades ago, so does Gervasi bank on the public’s continued interest, and with a concurrent HBO drama The Girl just enjoying its cable release, it seems he’s right. (As an aside, please take a moment and appreciate that the wonderful Toby Jones, whose thunder was stolen by Philip Seymour Hoffman for their dueling Capote biopics is trumped again, this time by Anthony Hopkins). While Gervasi deserves credit for not entrenching his historical snippet of Hitchcock with expected sycophantic flourishes, he also never quite manages to really give his material the treatment it deserves,...

Chicago – The great director Alfred Hitchcock had morphed to legend rather than a man, so it’s interesting that two films have recently been released about his all-too-human foibles. The feature film, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as the director, gets inside the man’s relationships in “Hitchcock.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Those relationships are the determining factor and centerpiece in the film, taking place around the filming of Hitchcock’s 1960 thriller classic, “Psycho.” The performances are also king in the narrative, as Sir Anthony, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Danny Huston and James D’Arcy portray the movie stars and personalities in Hitchcock’s world with a flair that brings them all back to life. The story suffers a bit with too little behind-the-scenes elements of “Psycho,” and too much focus on the married life of Hitchcock and his wife, but the film is an enjoyable holiday treat regarding the show business...

Anthony Hopkins doesn’t look one damn bit like Alfred Hitchcock, but he puts on one helluva show in his most engaging, hilarious and even sympathetic performance years in director Sascha Gervasi’s new film on the famed director. Less a biopic and more a hypothetical look at the master of suspense, Hopkins is smart enough not to try and imitate Hitchcock, but present his own interpretation. Where HBO’s recently aired The Girl, focused on Hitchcock’s obsession and manipulation of his leading lady Tippi Hedren, during the making of The Birds, Gervasi’s film is centered not just around the production of Psycho, but the director crossing back and forth between the line that separates the fantasy of cinema and the realities of success, fame and failure.

A competent cast and amusing direction brings us a snapshot of what it may have been like to spend a small amount of time with the "Master of Suspense", Alfred Hitchcock, over the course of the months before, during and after the making of one of the most popular horror films of all-time, Psycho. Based on Stephen Rebello's 1998 non-fiction book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho," director Sacha Gervasi's Hitchcock is both heartfelt and darkly comedic as it explores Hithcock's relationship with his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren), obsessive behavior with his blonde leading ladies and hunger to captivate his audience. A tight narrative and solid performances make Hitchcock a film worthy of watching even if it won't bowl you over. The majority of attention will be placed on Anthony Hopkins and the rubber latex attempting to transform him into the iconic director. While he may not look exactly like Hitchcock,...

20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for Hitchcock starring Anthony Hopkins as the iconic director, the film tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game, decided to make a 'lowly' horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The film will center on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Directed by Sacha Gervasi, Hitchcock co-stars the likes of Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Toni Collette as Peggy Robertson and Danny Huston as Whitfield Cook. The film will have its world premiere at the 2012 AFI Fest on November 1 before hitting theaters on November 23. Check out the trailer below.

Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder and Strangers on a Train arrived on Blu-ray today for the first time (more on that here) and 20th Century Fox is continuing the Hitchcock tradition by releasing a new poster (via IMPAwards) for their upcoming biopic Hitchcock, based on Stephen Rebello's 1998 non-fiction book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho". The film was adapted by Black Swan co-screenwriter John McLaughlin from film historian/Playboy contributing editor Stephen Rebello‘s book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. Joaquin Phoenix and Daniel Day-Lewis just got some company in the Best Actor race. Fox Searchlight has announced that "Hitchcock," about the making of Alfred Hitchcock's acclaimed thriller "Psycho," will arrive in theaters on Nov. 23, throwing star Sir Anthony Hopkins in the thick of the Oscar race.
Hopkins stars as Hitchcock in the film, and -- as you can see in the poster below -- his physical transformation is as incredible as Day-Lewis' look in "Lincoln." The film also stars Helen Mirren (as Hitchcock's wife, Alma Reville), Scarlett Johansson (as Janet Leigh), Jessica Biel (as Vera Miles), James D'Arcy (as Anthony Perkins) and Danny Huston (as Whitfield Cook).
The move is surprising for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that most Oscar heavyweights have already been scheduled by now. Hopkins -- who won an Oscar for "The Silence of the Lambs" -- immediately enters...

The original ‘Karate Kid’ Ralph Macchio has joined ‘Alfred Hitchcock And The Making of Psycho’, the upcoming biopic of one of the world’s most beloved filmmakers. Deadline says production begins next month.
Set in 1960, the movie finds Hitchcock at a troubling crossroads in his career having lost some of his audience with “Vertigo” (amazing to think that now) and the struggle he had to convince a studio to finance and distribute his low-rent horror/thriller, for which nobody believed audiences would turn up for such a violent, psychological tale. Paramount had so little faith in the project that they gave Hitch a paltry budget and just let him get on with it without supervision but this would prove to be the best thing that could have happened to cinema. Under pressure, Hitchcock crafted an absolute masterpiece using the limited resources he had at his disposable to the hilt, finding...

Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of ‘Psycho’, the story of how Hollywood’s legendary master of suspense made one of the seminal horror films of all time, has begun production, according to a new announcement from Fox Searchlight Pictures and Montecito Pictures.
The film — starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Helen Mirren — also has a new, one word title. It will simply be called Hitchcock. If you hadn’t noticed already, Hollywood has a current preference for one-word titles. This one happens to work for us.
The film will be directed by first-time helmer, Sacha Gervasi. Production will begin in Los Angeles on Friday.
Gervasi co-wrote Steven Spielberg’s 2004 film The Terminal and also won the Best Documentary award at the 2010 Independent Spirit Awards for Anvil! The Story of Anvil.

I’ve always thought that, purely as a title, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho simply lacks brevity. You know what you’re getting with the film — the story of how Alfred Hitchcock made Psycho and, more than likely, how it affected his own life — but that doesn’t mean Scorsese should have made His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the Hard Times in Tibet, either.
So it’s a smart move on Fox Searchlight’s part to have shortened the name down to Hitchcock, one that gets something across and, at the same time, doesn’t take up so much marquee space. More interesting, though, is the apparent shift in narrative content. The film’s source material, a book of the same name by Stephen Rebello, is often cited as one of the definitive accounts of Psycho‘s production — but, with a change in title, we now...
