We’ve had three presidents and two popes since Jamey Johnson last released an album of original songs. The double-lp The Guitar Song arrived in 2010, just two years after Johnson’s breakout record That Lonesome Song shattered Nashville’s glossy façade with a return to rough-and-tumble outlaw songwriting and production. But the Alabama native has been in no rush to release a proper follow-up, choosing instead to pay tribute to songwriting heroes like Hank Cochran with the 2012 covers album Living for a Song and put out a surprisingly tender holiday...

Randy Houser and Jamey Johnson, known for such country hits as “Like a Cowboy” and “In Color,” are teaming up for a new acoustic tour. The Country Cadillac Tour will play 13 dates, beginning February 5th at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, Texas.
Houser and Johnson go way back. Along with artists like Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann, they were part of a Nashville songwriting collective loosely known as “Traler Park.” Johnson and Houser have also written a number of songs together, most famously the 2005 country novelty hit “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,...

For a few freewheeling days in June of 1970, Elvis Presley assembled some of Nashville’s best sessions players to jam in RCA Studio B on Music Row. Elvis chose the songs himself, everything from Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and Bob Wills’ “Faded Love” to Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away” and Eddie Rabbitt’s “Patch It Up.” The sessions were marathon affairs, and naturally the musicians — and Elvis — would get hungry.

In June 1970, Elvis Presley made the trip east from his Graceland home in Memphis to Nashville, where he holed up in RCA Studio B on Music Row for five days of recording. Presley, who was in the midst of his Las Vegas comeback at the International Hotel, was joined by Music City sessions players like Charlie McCoy and Norbert Putnam — the legendary “Nashville Cats.” The result came to be known among fans as the “marathon sessions.”
Now, a new four-disc compilation assembles the masters from those halcyon days and captures Presley at his energetic best.

Just ahead of the forthcoming Me & Patsy Kickin’ Up Dust, Loretta Lynn’s memoir of her friendship with fellow country-music icon Patsy Cline, Lynn releases a new version of one of Cline’s most indelible hit songs, “I Fall to Pieces.”
Backed by the familiar 4:4 shuffle beat and stinging steel guitar, this updated take on the Hank Cochran-Harlan Howard classic finds 87-year-old Loretta injecting the nearly 60-year-old tune with all the honky-tonk heartache her still-emotional voice can muster.

Rising country crooner Logan Ledger recently released the first two singles from his eponymous debut album, produced by T Bone Burnett and due in October. “Starlight” and “Imagining Raindrops” form a resounding introduction for the California native, who works in an aesthetic best described as “Country Noir.”
“Starlight,” with its cosmic country meets Bakersfield vibe, straddles the line between Buck Owens and Dick Dale, while “Imagining Raindrops” is a wistful, classic ballad full of sorrow and warbling pedal steel. Ledger sings both like a modern George Jones with an appreciation for Chris Isaak’s stylish,...

From 1983 to 1988, songwriter Bobby Bare hosted the informal Bobby Bare & Friends show on the Nashville Network. The series was a chance for Bare to chat with many of his contemporaries and new artists as well, on a wide range of subjects, including, of course, country music. Bare now takes the format into the 21st century with a podcast that shares the same name and that same casual, free-flowing atmosphere of the original, which was anything but a standard interview show.

What does Jennifer Garner have in common with Lisa Simpson? That would be their love of playing the saxophone. Garner, 43, showcased her sax skills in a video posted on Vanity Fair Thursday, playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Adorably, she was nearly unable to finish after she started laughing. Garner had played saxophone in her school's marching band. She demonstrated her talent by playing country singer Hank Cochran's 1963 hit "Make the World Go Away" on the Donny & Marie show in 2000, when she played Romy opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt on the drama series Time of Your Life. And the winners of the 2013 Grammy Awards are ... the men. Male artists dominate the nominees in the top categories for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, announced Wednesday night (Dec. 5).
Topping the list with six nominations each are Jay-z, Kanye West, Fun., Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Taylor Swift, whose new album "Red" won't be eligible for consideration until 2014, earned a single nod for Record of the Year with her hit breakup single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
The biggest snubs are teen heartthrobs Justin Bieber and One Direction, who cleaned up at the American Music Awards, and Rihanna. The "Diamonds" singer earned a trio of nods (pop solo performance for her "Where Have You Been," rap-sung collaboration nomination with Jay-z for "Talk That Talk" and short-form music video for "We Found Love") but is Mia from the major categories.

Singer/songwriter Hank Cochran has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 74. A country music legend, Cochran penned hits like "Make the World Go Away", "That's All That Matters To Me", "I Fall to Pieces" and George Strait's "Ocean Front Property".
He died at his home in Tennessee on Thursday, July 15 after a final singalong on Wednesday night, July 14 with pals Billy Ray Cyrus and Jamey Johnson, who visited the ailing songwriter. Cochran landed his big break as a songwriter in the early 1960s when Ray Price hired him. Cochran then brought pal Willie Nelson onboard.
In a statement, Price says, "I recorded a lot of Hank's songs. He was a great songwriter and a great friend, so it's a double loss for me." Superfan Brad Paisley took to his Twitter page to honor Cochran, writing "Of my top 20 favorite songs of all time, he wrote about half of em.
