Tokyo, May 26 (Ians) Japanese Olympic Games organisers have decided to reduce by more than 50 per cent the expected number of visiting officials the Olympics and Paralympics amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The number will be cut to about 78,000 people for the events in July, August and September.
The Tokyo Olympics organising committee said it had estimated about 177,000 officials would visit the Tokyo Games and the Paralympics before the outbreak of the coronavirus last year, which delayed the events by 12 months.
The committee now expects about 59,000 officials from overseas to come to the Olympics, down sharply from 141,000 it had initially planned, reports Dpa.
The organisers also slashed the number of officials expected to attend the Paralympics to about 19,000 officials from 36,000.
Organising committee chief executive Toshiro Muto said they will make a final decision next month on how many spectators would be allowed to enter the venues.

Tokyo, May 25 (Ians) Japan could call up military doctors and nurses from its Self-Defence Forces to help at this year's Tokyo Olympics, defence minister Nobuo Kishi said in parliament on Tuesday.
Kishi said that his house has received a request to this matter from the Games organisers, Dpa reports.
The armed forces have started to operate the vaccination centres in Tokyo and Osaka this week to help speed up Japan's extremely slow vaccination process just two months ahead of the planned start of the postponed Olympics.
According to Olympics organisers, up to 230 doctors as well as 310 nurses will be needed daily at the Games. So far, around 80 per cent of the required number of medical staff has been secured, they said.

The U.S. State Department on Monday issued a “do not travel” warning to Japan amid a rise in Covid-19 cases, raising questions about the ability of the country to host the Olympics this summer.
The Summer Games, already postponed from last year, are a central part of Comcast-owned NBCUniversal’s strategy for the summer and the coming season, as the media giant just last week pitched an elaborate schedule of coverage across network platforms as part of the advertising upfront presentation. Following the State Department advisory, a spokesperson for NBC Sports said that plans had not changed.
The U.S. Olympic Committee has not yet commented on how the advisory will affect plans for athletes to attend the Games, scheduled to begin on July 23, less than two months from now. A spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tokyo, May 24 (Ians) International Olympic Committee (Ioc) president Thomas Bach and vice-president John Coates were the target of social media anger in Japan on Monday over their insistence that the rearranged Tokyo Games should take place amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Coates on Friday had said "absolutely yes" that the Games should go on from July 23 even if host city Tokyo remained in a state of emergency.
And Bach's comments reportedly made to a meeting of the international hockey federation (Fih) that "some sacrifices" were needed were also not readily accepted by many in Japan, whose population is firmly against the Games taking place according to recent polls, reports Dpa.
The Ioc on Monday said Bach was not referring to sacrifices from the Japanese population but rather "everyone in the Olympic community".

Jakarta, May 23 (Ians) Indonesia on Sunday said that despite Brisbane's strong bid for hosting the 2032 Olympics, it would continue to push for the quadrennial games, as a final decision had not yet been taken by the International Olympic Committee (Ioc).
Reports suggest that Brisbane could be confirmed as the 2032 Games host as early as at the Tokyo Olympics in July.
The last multi-discipline sports event Indonesia hosted was the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.
President Joko Widodo had reportedly ordered his Cabinet to prepare a dedicated plan for the bid last year, according to The Jakarta Post. A Presidential decree was issued in April this year to form a Bid Committee for the Olympics.
However, the odds are stacked heavily against Indonesia as the Ioc had announced Brisbane as its preferred bidder in March.

The Tokyo Olympics must go on, a senior International Olympics Committee executive said Friday.
John Coates, the IOC vice president in charge of the Tokyo Olympics, said the Games would open even if the city and other parts of Japan were under a state of emergency because of Covid-19. Coates said the Games would go on even if Japan’s local medical experts advised against holding the Olympics.
“The advice we have from the (World Health Organization) and all other scientific and medical advice that we have, is that — all the measures we have outlined, all of those measures that we are undertaking, are satisfactory and will ensure a safe and secure Games in terms of health,” Coates said. “And that’s the case whether there is a state of emergency or not.”

The athletes from all around the world are grateful to Japan for its diligent preparations, and are looking forward to a safe and secure Olympic and Paralympic Games where they can finally shine," Bach said at the conclusion of the 11th and final meeting of the Ioc's Coordination Commission for the Games.

Tokyo, March 27 (Ians) Members of the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including officials of the Indian Olympic Association (Ioa), as well as business executives belonging to sponsors will be barred from visiting the Olympic Village, revealed a 33-page playbook for Olympic and Paralympic family members.
The relevant passage states that "in order to protect the health of athletes, access to the Olympic and Paralympic Village has been restricted". It more specifically states: "Unfortunately, you will not have access."
The International Olympic Committee (Ioc), along with organisers in Japan, is doing its best for the safe conduct of the Games with the threat of Covid-19 looming large. The pandemic had forced the Games' postponement from last year to this year.
The new dates are July 23 to August 8 for the Olympic Games and August 24 to September 5 for the Paralympics.
Overseas fans, i.e. those from outside Japan, are not also being permitted to attend the Games.

Armed with their music and the most powerful weapon of all, love, The Beatles must stop the Blue Meanies from destroying everything near and dear to the people of Pepperland. Such is the premise of the animated movie Yellow Submarine, which, in celebration of its 50th Anniversary, is returning to select theaters for special showings. And joining it will be the making of book, It’s All in the Mind: Inside The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, Vol. 2; and the graphic novel adaptation of the film from writer/artist Bill Morrison and Titan Comics. Back at the height of Beatlemania in the mid-1960s, the Fab Four signed a three-picture deal with United Artists, resulting in the box office (and soundtracks) hits A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Help! (1965), after which their interest in a follow-up was virtually non-existent. Al Brodax, who had produced a Saturday morning animated series based on the...

Animation director on the Beatles film Yellow Submarine
The animation director Jack Stokes, who has died aged 92, had an energetic career that lasted more than 50 years, of which the highlight was his work on the Beatles' groundbreaking animated feature film Yellow Submarine (1968).
Jack's connection with the Fab Four was first established in 1965, when the London animation studio Tvc was commissioned to produce an animated television series The Beatles. It was a great ratings success in the Us, although it was never shown in the UK. Made to the typical standards of TV cartoons at that time, it showed no hint of what was to come with the feature film.
He was contacted by the Beatles again to do the animated titles and inserts on their Magical Mystery Tour film, which aired on the BBC on Boxing Day 1967. The following year came Yellow Submarine: there was barely a script to work from,...

The Snowman producer John Coates has died. The filmmaker - who was in his 80s - passed away after battling cancer, reports The Guardian. He had been working on a new version of the classic Christmas film for its 30th anniversary. Coates had recently been working with some of the film's original animators in London, but later became too ill to travel from Kent. Channel 4 has confirmed that the new version will be broadcast this Christmas. John Coates worked with The Snowman's original animator Raymond Briggs after reading the book. He convinced Channel 4 to make it as one of the channel's first films in 1981. He was a former British army officer who served in World War II, and (more)...

We all live in a Yellow Submarine with a Blu-ray player and the new Blu-ray of Yellow Submarine is proof that an animated film doesn’t have to be rendered in a digital environment to look perfect in hi-def. I hadn’t seen the psychedelic 1968 Beatles film in exactly 30 years, since I caught a midnight show at the Varsity Theater in St. Louis in the summer of ’82. Yellow Submarine tells of the Fab Four’s battles against the deranged Blue Meanies and their Hand Glove, which is hellbent on obliterating the unearthly paradise of Pepperland until the musicians save the day with the powers of peace, love and music. Watching the new Blu-ray with an audio commentary by producer John Coates, I was surprised to learn (and even more surprised I didn’t already know) that the speaking voices of the animated boys were provided by John Clive, Geoffrey Hughes,...

British heavyweights Jim Broadbentand Brenda Blethyn are to lend their voices to the new animated feature based on the graphic novel by English author and illustrator Raymond Briggs.
Ethel & Ernest will trace the life story of two ordinary londoners (Briggs' parents) and their four-decade long marriage from their first meeting in 1928 to their deaths in 1971, experiencing the Great Depression, World War II, the advent of television and other events. That's a lot of voicing!
According to The Hollywood Reporter John Coates will produce the feature with Camilla Deakin as executive-producer. Hopefully Coates will be bringing the same magic to Ernest & Ethel as he did with previous Briggs adaptation and oscar nominated animation The Snowman.
Will the story work as an animation? What do you think?
