There’s nothing as tempting as IP: Just ask the studio streaming titans of today, who are diving deep into their film catalogs to reboot and reimagine hit films from decades past.
Just one summer since slasher “I Know What You Did Last Summer” found new life as an Amazon Prime Video series, and it seems that all our favorite “old” movies are finding new life on streamers and networks alike.
CBS announced shortly after canning a slew of shows that a reboot of the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis film “True Lies” will head to the network soon.
NBCUniversal also recently announced on May 12 a “re-framing” of Ben Stiller’s beloved 1994 burnout dramedy “Reality Bites,” which originally starred Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke. The series is set to debut on Peacock, along with a bevy of other Universal titles being transformed for the small screen.

A reframing of the Gen-x hit film Reality Bites is in the works as a series at Peacock from original screenplay writer Helen Childress, who will also executive produce.
The series is centered on the driven, idealistic Lelaina Pierce and her three best friends as they leave college and try “adulting” in the 1990s; as the world around them is on the brink of a seismic shift, they struggle to hold onto who they are, and to each other.
Jenna Bans, Danny Devito, Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher, and Casey will serve as executive producers. The project reunites Devito, Shamberg, and Sher who were producers for the Reality Bites film which starred Winona Ryder, Ben Stiller, and Ethan Hawk.
Childress is repped by WME, Anonymous Content, and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum & Morris. Devito, Shamberg, and Sher are all repped by CAA.

Sometimes it’s hard to be professionally good-looking, as Ben Stiller discovered following the box office misstep of “Zoolander 2.”
While the 2016 sequel to the classic model mock-drama flopped, writer-director Stiller was free to pursue actual dramatic projects, like the Apple TV+ series “Severance” currently rolling out on the platform.
“If ‘Zoolander 2’ had been a huge hit, and then people were saying ‘Zoolander 3! Do this movie! That movie!'” Stiller told Esquire, admitting watching the film tank was “not a great experience.”
“That might have taken me off the road of having the space to work on developing [‘Escape From Dannemora’]. I might have gotten distracted by other bright shiny objects, but instead it opened a path where I could just do what I’d honestly wanted to do for years and years, which was: just direct something!” Stiller said. “To say, I’m just going to work on this project that I want to work on,...

On Saturday afternoon the 18th Tribeca Film Festival celebrated the 25th anniversary of Ben Stiller’s iconic ’90s movie Reality Bites with a screening followed by a cast and filmmaker reunion. Ben Stiller was joined on stage by stars Ethan Hawke, Winona Ryder and Janeane Garofalo, plus writer Helen Childress, producer Michael Shamberg and executive producer Stacey Sher. Ethan Hawke took a trip down Memory Lane this weekend at the Tribeca Film Festival to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Reality Bites,” the film that gave him his big start… and, he says, that he almost turned down.
Hawke attended a special 25th anniversary screening of the 1994 cult film, along with Winona Ryder, Janeane Garofalo, Ben Stiller, writer Helen Childress, producer Michael Shamberg, and executive producer Stacey Sher. He even came dressed for the occasion, wearing a “Hey, That’s My Bike” shirt in homage to the fictional band in the film.
While Hawke had previously appeared in “Explorers” and “Dead Poets Society,” “Reality Bites” was his first shot at a leading role. Stiller, meanwhile, made his directorial debut with the film. But neither would have found that opportunity if it wasn’t for Winona Ryder, who introduced the actors to each other.

Highlights of their slate include Love You to Death (January 26) starring Marcia Gay Harden, which is based on the true story of a mother and daughter who are nothing like they seem, their tumultuous relationship ending in a brutal murder. Also based on a true story is Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (January 19) starring Christina Ricci. The movie is inspired by Nellie Bly’s undercover stay at the impenetrable Women’s Lunatic Asylum. For something a little lighter, there’s Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted to You (February 16) which follows the personal and professional journey of the titular Grease icon. Lifetime...

In news you didn’t know you wanted to hear until just now, Deadline Hollywood reports that Ben Stiller and Helen Childress, the respective director and writer of ’90s cult hit Reality Bites, are bringing the film to NBC as a single-camera comedy. The film, which starred Stiller, Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Steve Zahn centered on the lives of a group of “slacker” Gen-x college graduates as they struggled to keep themselves afloat in the real world. Sound familiar for a lot of people today? Lelaina (Ryder), an aspiring filmmaker, chronicled her friends’ every triumph and tribulation in the apartment they all shared on camera; she compiles this footage into a documentary-style program (remember, this is the ’90s, we’re pre-reality TV, kids) called Reality Bites that airs on an MTV-like network, which doesn’t really vibe with her roommates. So by taking Reality Bites to NBC, isn...

While 1994’s Reality Bites could accurately be described as a cult success rather than a big hit at the box office, it nevertheless struck a chord and encapsulated the Generation X zeitgeist. So now, nearly 20 years later, it’s getting the chance to explore the era in more depth, as director Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress team up to develop TV version for NBC.The film version starred Winona Ryder as Lelaina Pierce, freshly graduated from college and negotiating the minefields of love, life and career in the mid-1990s with help (or hindrance) from the likes of Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Stiller himself. As for the planned show, it’ll follow Lelaina as she continues to chronicle her life in the same time period, albeit in a single-camera comedy format. There’s no word on casting yet, but Stiller and Childress will produce the show...

Although you would think that Ben Stiller would have learned his lesson—after Lelaina saw how he cut up her work for a bunch of network suits, turning it into, like, a joke, when she was just trying to make something real—Stiller is at it again, aiming to transform 1994’s Lisa Loeb-song-of-a-generation Reality Bites into an NBC sitcom. According to Deadline, Stiller will executive produce alongside original screenwriter Helen Childress, replicating the film’s early-‘90s story of a bunch of slacker-era slackers who are armed with zero ambitions, but scores of references to 1970s pop culture. But ...

NBC is developing a Reality Bites half-hour comedy, with Ben Stiller as an executive producer and original screenwriter Helen Childress onboard to write the pilot. [Pause here to fire up the soundtrack; let the bliss of "Stay" wash over you.] According to Variety, the show will pretty much mirror the story of the movie, following Lelaina and her cohorts living in Houston in the early nineties and dealing with both an economic recession and their post-collegiate ennui. Here's an exciting experience you can try at home: Watch the movie as an adult and realize that you now sympathize way more with Ben Stiller's character, and every time Ethan Hawke is onscreen it's like there's a neon light above his head flashing "I'm bad news." Ah, maturity.

Unlike reality, this news sure doesn't bite.
According to Deadline, "Reality Bites" director and star Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress are looking to bring their 1994 cult rom-com to the small screen, with the concept getting a script order over at NBC.
The comedy, to be written by Childress and executive produced by Stiller's Red Hour Television, will hew to the film's premise and follow Houston-based recent college grad Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder's character in the movie) as she documents the lives of her "slacker" friends/roommates with a video camera.
But don't expect less grunge and more hipsters when the single-camera series makes its debut chez Peacock, because it will still be set in the early '90s. All grown up now, original stars Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Steve Zahn likely won't reprise their roles, though maybe Stiller could return as cable TV exec Michael Grates?...

Some ideas are so bonkers that they're either going to result in something really great or really horrible, with no possible middle ground. This is one of those ideas. It seems that director Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress have reteamed for a TV version of their cult 1994 comedy "Reality Bites." Should the pilot go to series, it will air on NBC; Stiller's Red Hour Television will be producing alongside Universal Television and Double Feature Films, the company run by Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher, who produced the original movie. If you're thinking to yourself, "Jeez that movie was almost instantly dated, how are they going to modernize it?" Don't worry: it's going to maintain the early-nineties setting of the movie. Get ready for lots and lots of flannel shirts. The television show will, like the movie, focus on the trials and tribulations of Lelaina Pierce, played in the movie...

The new TV series will be based on the movie, revolving around recent college grad Lelaina as she struggles romantically and professionally in the recession-plagued, pre-Internet, early '90s in Houston, where she shares an apartment with slacker friends.

"Reality Bites" is getting the TV treatment. Reality Bites, the cult 1994 romantic comedy that examined the angst of Generation X college graduates, is heading to primetime. The film’s director Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress have teamed for a TV series version of the movie that starred Winona Ryder, Stiller and Ethan Hawke. Childress will write the single-camera comedy project, which is set up at NBC. It centers on recent college graduate Lelaina Pierce, the character played in the movie by Ryder, as she struggles to make her way — romantically and professionally — in the recession-plagued, pre-Internet early 1990s. Few genres of film inspire more personal responses than the romantic comedy. Given how much of our lives is spent on love and romance (falling into it, falling out of it, chasing it, giving up on it), it's no surprise that the rom-com has remained one of the most popular formulas since the dawn of cinema, and while the genre has undisputed classics, you can end up cherishing certain films purely because of their connection to your own life. They can help pull you out of a post break-up tailspin, they can comfort you through unrequited love, and, if a film hits you at the height of your passion for someone, they can end up associated forever, even blinding you to the movie's flaws -- seeing "Elizabethtown" in the midst of first love left this writer swooning after exiting the theater (thankfully, a subsequent rewatch put me straight as to how terrible it is.

So for some ungodly reason, the team behind Reality Bites is at it again! Screenwriter Helen Childress, whose '90s post-collegiate angst dramedy was snagged by a major studio right out of USC grad school, and comic actor Ben Stiller, are making a horror movie called The Mountain. Again: what? Why? Good God, I hate Reality Bites.

Apparently the film is set in the 1900s and based on an Edith Wharton novel called Summer, about a young woman who confronts her destiny after discovering a mysterious object that relates to the secrets of her past. Yes, it's that vague. They're also comparing it to Polanski's classic Rosemary's Baby, which is simply derptacular.

Say what you will about the films he stars in — I certainly have — but Ben Stiller has had a fairly impressive directorial career. Reality Bites, The Cable Guy, Zoolander, and Tropic Thunder are all movies with flaws both mutual and specific, yet they have a flair for comedic timing, character work, and are all generally well-made. The guy is honestly and truly a talented filmmaker.
Thankfully, Deadline says that he’s putting together a new project with 20th Century Fox: The Mountain, a horror film based on a spec screenplay by Reality Bites writer Helen Childress. It follows a young woman in the 1900s “who struggles to confront her destiny after stumbling upon a mysterious object that forces her to examine the secrets of her past,” and is already being compared to Rosemary’s Baby. Not sure how that comes out of such a description, but I won’t complain.

Ben Stiller is about to take a stab at the horror genre.
Fox has acquired the rights to Helen Childress’ The Mountain, with Ben Stiller attached to direct, according to Deadline. He and producing partner Stuart Cornfeld will also produce through their production company, Red Hour.
A period film set in the early 1900s, The Mountain follows a woman confronting her destiny whilst coming to terms with the secrets of her past. The script is based off of characters from Summer, by Edith Wharton.
The foray into horror for Stiller isn’t as jarring as it would initially seem. Through Red Hour, Stiller got his feet wet in the horror genre by producing the killer-vines thriller The Ruins.
Remember when the guys from Entourage were going to make an Edith Wharton novel into a movie as a vehicle for Vincent Chase? Whatever happened with that?...

[1] Ben Stiller is set to reunite with Reality Bites writer Helen Childress for a new picture that couldn't be more different from their last collaboration. The new project, titled The Mountain, will be a period horror story based on characters from Edith Wharton's novel Summer. The movie marks a sharp change of pace for Stiller, whose past projects have been mostly comedies. In addition, it represents a return to writing for Childress, whose Reality Bites was her first and last feature screenplay. More details after the jump. Wharton's 1917 classic describes the sexual awakening of a New England woman named Charity Royall. She falls in love with a man who, unbeknownst to her, is engaged to someone else, and becomes pregnant by him. Childress' "sophisticated horror" script, on the other hand, has been described [2] as being "in the vein of Rosemary's Baby" and revolves around "a young woman who struggles...

Over the next couple years, Ben Stiller is going to be quite busy with projects like the recently announced Rentaghost that reunites him with Night at the Museum writers Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant, the sci-fi action comedy Neighborhood Watch, a new take on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and maybe, hopefully Zoolander 2 sometime down the road. Now Fox has just set up two more project for the actor, director and producer. The first project is an unlikely one, but with an interesting reunion as Deadline says Stiller is developing a new horror film to direct called The Mountain from Reality Bites writer Helen Childress. Based on characters from Edith Warton's novel Summer, the film is set in the early 1900's and follows a young woman who struggles to confront her destiny after stumbling upon a mysterious object that forces her to examine the secrets of her past.
