In the aftermath of #OscarSoWhite, there has been a shift, with actors of color including Viola Davis, Daniel Kaluuya, Mahershali Ali and Steven Yuen earning nominations. But the parts these actors inhabited were written specifically for a Black or, in Yuen’s case, a Korean actor.
It was only last year when Riz Amed, the British son of Pakistani immigrants, was nominated of “Sound of Metal,” that the Oscars hinted at a newer trend in diversity in casting.
“Hollywood is finally catching up and we’re able to represent the world as it really is,” says “West Side Story” casting director Cindy Tolan, adding that studios are “following the dollar.”
“If you’re more reflective of life and of the audience, then more people will be interested in your movie or TV show,” says “Macbeth” casting director Ellen Chenoweth.

“A Star is Born” maintained its perfect track record with the guild awards by reaping a bid from the Cinema Audio Society for Best Sound Mixing on Tuesday. The Cas was the eighth guild to weigh in with their picks for the best of the year. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic had already been cited by the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers as one of the best of the year in their respective fields. Not surprisingly, it is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
With their bids at the Cas, “Black Panther, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Quiet Place” join six other films with nominations at five precursors each. The other half dozen movies so cited are “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice.”

We’ve now heard from six of the guilds — actors, art directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers — as well as the casting directors with their nominees for the best of the year in their respective fields.
Only one film — “A Star is Born” — has reaped bids from all seven precursor prizes. Not surprisingly, it is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Six films – “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice” — have been cited by five precursors. All of these but “Crazy Rich Asians” number among our top 10 Best Picture contenders. But could we be underestimating this comedy blockbuster, which is currently in 14th place on our chart?
The current roster is rounded out by “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which are both in contention at four guilds as well as three-time contender “Mary Poppins Returns” and two-time nominee “If Beale Street Could Talk.

It’s only fitting that the Coen Brothers new project is backed by Netflix since it’s a Western-themed anthology film that plays like the forced-binge experience of an anthology TV series.
While the Coens claim in the press notes for “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” that they were inspired by “those films made in Italy in the ’60s which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme,” they were apparently so inspired that they made an anthology movie as wildly uneven as the ones they’re aping.
None of the Coens’ tales of the Old West is an outright dud, but the movie never matches the eponymous opening sequence, starring Tim Blake Nelson as a white-hatted singing cowboy with a tune in his heart, a kind word for everyone he meets, and an exceedingly itchy trigger finger. It’s like the collaboration Gene Autry and Sam Peckinpah never made,...

Rumorville: George Clooney in Talks to Direct 20th Century Fox’s ‘Echo’ + More Casting News to Watch
Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “Echo” 20th Century Fox is putting together its next big thriller and seems to be seeking an equally-big name attached at the helm. George Clooney is currently in negotiations to direct the upcoming sci-fi flick “Echo,” which follows a drone specialist in the middle of a psychological crisis, suspecting his lover is not who she appears to be. Christopher MacBride is producing the project, which is still in the very early stages of planning and negotiations. There’s no casting director assigned to the project just yet, but Clooney tends to team with Ellen Chenoweth on projects he directs. “Rocketman” Elton John is getting a major biopic, but the...

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “Catch-22”George Clooney is getting back into the director’s chair, this time to adapt the classic novel “Catch-22” for the screen. The actor-director will be making his return to TV for the story, which will be made into a six-episode series for Paramount TV, but no network is attached to air. Clooney will play Colonel Cathcart in the series, in addition to directing. No other cast has been announced. He will likely work with Ellen Chenoweth on recruiting talent, as she’s been his go-to for past projects he’s directed. The series will likely shoot in the first half of 2018, and although the story takes place in Italy during WWII, it’s...

Stay in the loop on industry and casting news with our write-up on who’s been slated for recent film and television roles! “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Other Tales of the American Frontier”The Coen Brothers are fulfilling their own manifest destiny with their new experimental project, conveniently shortened to “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” While this marks the first television series for the “Hail, Caesar!” siblings, the format won’t stray far from their signature style: Each of the six installments will be delivered in an abbreviated film format. The films will follow the interwoven stories of a group of people in the Old West immediately following the end of the Civil War. While specifics are hard to come by, including whether the series is a network or Netflix property, it is confirmed that Ellen Chenoweth will take on casting. The cast, which is currently at zero,...

Every once in a while, a really special film comes along that you may have a chance to see at a film festival, but that may not have the biggest studio push behind it when it finally gets released. Jeff Grace’s Folk Hero and Funny Guy is one of those great festival movies that really deserves more attention.
The film stars Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), and Alex Karpovsky (Girls) as two childhood friends whose lives went into very different directions in terms of fame and success. Russell’s Jason Black is a hugely-popular singer and songwriter i.e. the folk her of the title, while Karpovsky’s Paul is the funny guy, a struggling stand-up comic for many years. When Paul’s fiancé dumps him, Jason, feeling bad for his friend, throws out the idea of the two of them going on tour with Paul opening for him. The...
