Judging by his tweets, talk of ratings and his pre-political career, President Donald Trump likes TV.
But how do TV’s most famous faces feels about him? For many talk show hosts, the response isn’t very friendly. From the ones who have flat-out said they don’t want Trump on their show to the ones who think he’s too much of a “coward” to do so, here is what five hosts have said about Trump so far.

Comedy Central’s naming of South African comic/show host Trevor Noah to replace Jon Stewart on The Daily Show is today being called late-night TV’s boldest move ever born of necessity, after the network lost its top candidates from its second-to-none farm team. "Ninety-nine percent of the country has not heard of this guy and that's bold in itself," late-night TV pundit Bill Carter pronounced this morning. If you need any further proof that "Saturday Night Live" has lost whatever edge it once had, there's the news that Sarah Palin is planning to appear on the show's 40th anniversary special, airing Feb. 15. Remember, just seven years ago, Tina Fey's impression of the then-vice presidential candidate was widely credited with losing the election for her and John McCain. Since then, in speeches and Facebook posts, Palin has not been one to let a personal grievance slide. And yet, here she is, returning to the "SNL" studio at 30 Rock. This is more than just being a good sport or burying the hatchet; it's an indication that she doesn't consider whatever satirical softballs "SNL" may lob her way to be any kind of a threat. Maybe there's no such thing as bad publicity, but clearly, no prominent person, not even one as polarizing as a partisan politician, is afraid...

Earlier this month, when David Letterman announced he was going to retire from hosting the Late Show, it was hard not to think of Louis C.K.. That's because less than two years ago, C.K. called it, doing a three-episode arc around the idea of Letterman retiring. Did he know something the rest of us didn't? Talking with New York Times TV reporter Bill Carter last night at the Directors Guild, C.K. confirmed he did not. Not only did he not know anything, but he was worried about portraying it at all: "I remember asking, 'Am I allowed to just say that about a living person? That he's retiring?" C.K. said it was funny to see it actually happening, but it ultimately "made sense," as Letterman "had a great life on the air."But unlike the show, C.K. said he wasn't called. HBO’s rise from the you’re-spending-my-subscription-money-on-that-crap? original programming basement to cable TV’s creative gold standard can be charted over a period of about ten years with the successes of several key original offerings.
By the end of the 1980s, the movie box office was becoming dominated by young-skewing sci fi and fantasy adventures, over-the-top action blockbusters, and sequels to sci fi and fantasy and over-the-top blockbusters. Box office Top Tens for 1989-1990 included the likes of Batman (1989), Ghostbusters II (1989), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Home Alone (1990), Total Recall (1990), and Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990). Over on the small screen, the penchant was for the sweet, the nice, the inoffensive. TV series at the top of the rating charts during the same period included The Cosby Show, Golden Girls, Wonder Years, Who’s the Boss?, and Murder, She Wrote.

Did an aircraft recovery group find Amelia Earhart's doomed plane in 2010? A new law suit filed by a donor to the International Group for Historic Aviation Recovery (Tighar) claims that the group did find Earhart's plane but then covered up the discovery in order to solicit more funding.
Amelia Earhart, the first great female aviator in American history, vanished without a trace while crossing the Pacific Ocean in 1937. In the years since then, many have tried and failed to discover her fate.
According to a legal suit filed by a Wyoming man, Timothy Mellon, Tighar actually found the plane in 2010. Sonar images taken off the coast of the Kiribati atoll of Nikumaroro in that year may have shown underwater evidence of the wrecked Lockheed Electra lost with Earhart.
Mellon says that the group never disclosed this possible evidence when they solicited a $1 million donation from him to fund an expedition.

Evincing the poise and professionalism of a network that botched the last two transitions of its signature late-night program, NBC’s move to bring The Tonight Show to Jimmy Fallon has been a relatively drama-free affair. (Give or take some public whining from Jay Leno.) That process is in the early goings, however, so there’s still potential for a fiasco that’s worthy of book-length recounting or a made-for-hbo movie—or maybe the knives will come out when the average Tonight viewer is already asleep. As if there haven't been enough rumors flying this week about the possible replacement of Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon, Page Six reports on a replacement for Fallon on "Late Night": Current "Saturday Night Live" head writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers.

When asked by The New York Times' Bill Carter at an event Monday evening whether he would take the job, Meyers was noncommittal. "Nobody could do that job as well as Jimmy Fallon," said at the time, while declining to elaborate.
Meyers would be an obvious choice to replace Fallon, given their similar professional backgrounds. Both achieved fame on "SNL," specifically in the Weekend Update anchor chair.

Jason Sudeikis will stay at "Saturday Night Live" at least through the election season, executive producer Lorne Michaels has told Bill Carter of The New York Times.

As Bill Carter of The New York Times notes, this will be the first time that a Romney family member has appeared as a guest on a late night talk show during this election cycle. Gov. Romney previously appeared on David Letterman's show to perform a Top Ten List.
Lorne Michaels invited Romney to appear on "Saturday Night Live" last season, but Romney was unable to fit the show in his schedule.

Yesterday was all about the Cannes lineup, so we've got quite a bit of news to catch up with today. First and foremost, Cinema Scope has relaunched its site with a healthy selection of pieces from Issue 50, which cinephiles lucky enough to be holding a print copy have been talking about for weeks now. Editor Mark Peranson: "So to commemorate 50 issues, I came up with the silly (not stupid) idea of deciding on the best 50 filmmakers currently working under the age of 50 (or the top, or the greatest — I've spent far too much time pondering this silly adjective). I'm anticipating heaps of criticism for this in the blogosphere, but I hope this leads to a little discussion outside of the pages of this magazine, and provides a snapshot of where cinema finds itself today."
20 of those 50 pieces are online. You'll find, for example, Raya Martin on Carlos Reygadas (and...

Matt Lauer has signed a new deal to remain with the "Today" show, the New York Times reported late Thursday.
The multi-year deal was signed for an undisclosed amount, but it's widely believed that Lauer will be making an eye-popping $25 million a year.
"Matt is the franchise, and our franchise player has decided to keep leading our team,” NBC News president Steve Capus told the paper.
The Times' Bill Carter wrote that the deal will be announced during Friday's show.
The signing of Lauer's new contract means that "Today" will go forward with its key host during one of its most challenging times in recent memory. The show has been fending off a newly aggressive challenge from "Good Morning America." The announcement of the deal will come at the end of a particularly intense week in the morning show wars, with Katie Couric hosting "Gma" and Sarah Palin co-hosting "Today.

Michael Douglas has reprised his Oscar-winning Wall Street character Gordon Gekko in a bid to help FBI agents win their fraud war.
The 'greed is good' anti-villain appears in a new public service announcement Douglas has shot for bureau officials, in which he asks Americans to report information about securities and commodities fraud.
In the ad, Douglas says, "I played a greedy corporate executive who cheated to profit while innocent investors lost their savings... The movie was fiction, but the problem is real."
The FBI has launched a new campaign to clamp down on insider trading and embezzling - and the Douglas ad is part of the project.
FBI spokesman Bill Carter insists Douglas jumped at the chance to help put scheming traders and businessmen behind bars.
He says, "With a high-profile person like this, we hope this will be an effective way to get the word out."...

Bill Carter of the New York Times is reporting that Chelsea Clinton, the fiercely-protected only child of Bill and Hillary Clinton, has been hired by NBC News as a full-time special correspondent. This definitively puts to bed last month's rumor, apparently started by Politico, that Chelsea was possibly/potentially/perhaps considering running for Congress in New York's solidly Democratic 18th district in Westchester County. The thirty-one-year-old Chelsea, who Bill Clinton has said "has her mother's character and her father's energy" and is working on a Ph.D. in public policy from Nyu, will make her bid to become the next Maria Shriver beginning today. She will report to the news division offices and start plugging away on stories to be used as part of the "Making a Difference" series featured on NBC Nightly News, according to NBC News president Steve Capus. Johnny Depp sure proved he's not "all hat and no cattle," as the saying goes, while in town for a showing of "The Rum Diary" at the Austin Film Festival.
The actor surprised fans by rocking out at the Continental Club after the screening. This old school South Austin joint is famous for its live music scene and has hosted a wide range of acts, from Kinky Friedman to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Depp got on the Continental's stage with the Og bearded hipster Billy Gibbons of Zz Top and Bill Carter of Bill Carter and the Blame.
If you need any proof that Johnny Depp has a photo of himself hidden in a closet somewhere a la Dorian Grey, here's a YouTube video of his old band P, which included lead Surfer of Buttholes Gibby Haynes and Bill Carter, playing at SXSW in 1993. (Also worth noting! Gibby Haynes' father...

Earlier this week Bill Carter reported on the latest trends in cable news ratings suggesting that Keith Olbermann's departure from MSNBC has damaged their overall ratings. The essay focused primarily on MSNBC's declining ratings in the post-Olbermann era, but buried in the article was another, perhaps more noteworthy, side of the story: CNN's shifting prime time schedule appears to be paying off. In fact, Anderson Cooper has consistently been getting more viewers than Lawrence O'Donnell which has led to primetime viewer growth for CNN of 46% for the month.

This week Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show launches with great fanfare. The media coverage ranged from breathless comparisons to Edward R. Murrow to "one of the great hopes to inherit the audience Ms. Winfrey leaves behind," as was reported by Bill Carter today for the NY Times. Cooper is an outstanding journalist, and has been lauded for his terrific reporting from areas of conflict on this site. But the challenge he faces in transitioning to a successful daytime host requires a departure from his dispassionate and stoic demeanor, to one that viewers can connect with. And I just don't see that happening.

9:06Am: After touting her Network’s number one status in viewers, upfront ad sales and Emmy nods for a Broadcast Network, Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment President opens the floodgates to an inevitable barrage of Charlie Sheen related questions. Ready… set… go!
9:07Am: According to Tassler, The Good Wife’s demotion to Sunday (Our words, not hers) is a “new higher profile time period” that will bring with it a very interesting character transformation for Alicia.
9:09Am: Shocker of the session thus far, 6 minutes in and still no Charlie Sheen related question!
9:10Am: Tassler, or as we really should be referring to her from here on in as “the spin doctor,” calls Rules Of Engagement’s move to Saturday an “opportunity.” In related news, contrary to popular belief, she is aware of Rules Of Engagement’s existence.

Coming off the heels of Lorne Michaels' announcement that all current "Saturday Night Live" cast members will return for the 37th season, the "SNL" executive producer has also announced Alec Baldwin as the host of the upcoming season premiere, according to Bill Carter of The New York Times. The second episode of the season will be hosted by "Bridesmaids" scene-stealer (and Emmy nominee for "Mike and Molly") Melissa McCarthy.
The show will mark Baldwin's 16th time hosting the NBC sketch comedy program, a record. He last appeared on "SNL" hosting the finale of season 35, in May 2010.
Michaels' announcement comes at the same time of swirling rumors regarding Baldwin's longevity at the hit NBC comedy "30 Rock," which Baldwin claims he will leave after the next season when his contract runs out. NBC executives claim to be unsure of Baldwin's official plans, and seem hopeful that Baldwin will reconsider and stay at the show.
