“Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris’ willingness to tackle tough topics on primetime network television – including police brutality, corporal punishment, and the 2016 election – “opens minds and hearts into a window into a world many folks don’t understand,” said one of the show’s stars, Marcus Scribner, in honoring Barris at the 44th Annual Humanitas Prize awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Friday night.
“In the space of 30 minutes, Kenya is able to weave these stories that have never been told on television before, and I think that’s why he’s such an amazing artist,” said Scribner, who plays teenage son Andre Johnson, Jr. on the ABC show. “He’s never out to make bank; he’s there to make change.”

I was never a huge fan of My Name Is Earl, despite being a big fan of most everyone involved, and Jaime Pressly has always been one of my favorites… for reasons that, to be completely honest, I don’t really understand. I couldn’t get behind I Hate My Teenage Daughter, but she almost made it work. With the right material, she has the charm and comedic timing to pull audiences in. Considering TV Land‘s solid record so far, this may be one to really watch out for.
That said, and considering TV Land‘s obvious bent toward the styles and sensibilities of sit-coms from 20-30 years ago, this one sounds like it could easily go too far toward the silly, milking cheap laughs at every turn (a la Mom). It will be interesting to see how the cast rounds out, but for now we have something to look forward to.

[1] Our last couple editions of TV Bits have been filled with mostly good news, but today's is more of a downer, what with shows getting axed, a guy getting hurt, and, well, do you consider a Fred Durst sitcom bad news? At least AMC has some nice things to offer, including a new trailer for Hell on Wheels and some intriguing dramas in the works. After the jump: Charlie's Angels and Memphis Beat get cancelled Olivia Wilde leaves House Transporter star Chris Vance gets injured Fred Durst signs a deal with CBS Hell on Wheels gets a new trailer Earlier this week, ABC gave full-season orders to its freshman shows Suburgatory and Revenge, but the new crop isn't all winners. The network has just given the axe to the Charlie's Angels reboot, which premiered to low ratings and never quite recovered. ABC will air the remaining four episodes which have already been shot.

Fred Durst has come a long way from his Limp Bizkit frontman days. He has been directing and now looks as though he will star in and produce a comedy series. Deadline reports that Durst has signed his first ever TV deal with CBS and CBS TV Studios. The deal partners him with CBS TV Studios-based producers Eric and Kim Tannenbaum on a half-hour comedy project.
The untitled comed (often referred to as Douchebag) has received a script commitment. It centers around "a rock legend looking for balance between his high profile lifestyle and trying to raise a family." The script will be written by Matthew Carlson (Mr. Sunshine) who will executive produce with the Tannenbaums. Durst’s manager/producer John Schneider is serving as a non-writing producer. Durst has only acted in arcs on NBC’s limited series Revelations and Fox’s House. I loved his directing job on Education of Charlie Banks.

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst has long complained that people have treated him like a music industry joke, a punch line to the question, "Seriously, what's with that dude in the backward red baseball cap?"
But the nu-metal maestro may have the final laugh thanks to a deal he recently signed with CBS and CBS TV Studios to develop a half-hour sitcom. According to Deadline Hollywood, Durst will star in and produce the untitled show, which has a not-ready-for-primetime working title that perfectly fits the "Nookie" singer's self-deprecating image: "Douchebag."

It's a no-go for ABC's midseason series "Single With Parents."
ABC and ABC Studios on Wednesday pulled the plug on the comedy over creative differences with the show's producing team, led by creator/executive producer Kristin Newman.
ABC Studios/DreamWorks' "Single With Parents" -- in which Alyssa Milano stars as a woman juggling her dysfunctional family, friends and boss -- was one of five pilots ABC ordered in August to series for midseason.
However, production on the project, co-starring Annie Potts and Beau Bridges, had been postponed several times over disagreements about the show's creative direction.
Ultimately, the disagreements could not be resolved, and ABC on Wednesday opted not to proceed with "Single" beyond the pilot.
Newman executive produced "Single With Parents" with Matthew Carlson and DreamWorks TV's Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
