Country singer Jamey Johnson and saxophone player Dave McMurray have combined their talents for a new cover of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter’s “To Lay Me Down” that’s out now. The song appears on McMurray’s upcoming album Grateful Deadication 2, a tribute album that reimagines the work of the Grateful Dead.
The track opens with some celestial sax runs and percussion, but quickly shifts to a subdued arrangement of acoustic guitar and piano for Johnson’s tender delivery of the verses. McMurray accents the tune with some soulful...

With ten albums over almost 20 years, the Austin band The Gourds has been well established on the local scene with their raucous live performances. Kevin Russell formed the band in 1994 with fellow songwriter Jimmy Smith, and Claude Bernard on accordion, guitar and keyboards -- Keith Langford later joined the band on drums. It was the viral sensation of their cover of "Gin and Juice" that garnered them national attention, and has become their band's version of "Freebird" as the most requested song. Longtime fans of the band know that the magic of The Gourds truly comes from the communal live experience, whether witnessed at a jam-packed Thursday night show at Shady Grove or the memorable SXSW 2005 free show at Auditorium Shores with a sea of over 20,000 people.

The late Levon Helm, Ewan McGregor, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Birkin, Rosanne Cash and 43 other acts feature on a new song released by Amnesty International.
Titled Toast to Freedom, the song celebrates Amnesty's 50th anniversary and is being released to mark World Press Freedom Day on Thursday. The initial recording was made at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, before producer Bob Clearmountain sent it to dozens of artists – also including the Blind Boys of Alabama, Donald Fagen, Eric Burdon and Taj Mahal – to add their vocals. Toast to Freedom, performed by an ensemble of prominent musicians and celebrities, goes on sale
A supergroup of prominent artists and performers are to release a song on Thursday as part of celebrations to commemorate Amnesty International's 50th birthday. Singers including Jane Birkin, Marianne Faithfull and Us country star Rosanne Cash have contributed to the recording, entitled Toast to Freedom.
The commemorative song will celebrate Amnesty International's global human rights work and was initially composed in sessions at Woodstock in upstate New York, in the converted barn studios of the rock musician and human rights campaigner Levon Helm, who died earlier this month.
The release of the fundraising song also helps to mark the long relationship between the Observer and Amnesty, which was founded following a 1961 article in the paper by the lawyer Peter Benenson about two Portuguese students reportedly imprisoned for raising their glasses in the name of freedom.

Over the past month, every week there seems to be a new casting announcement for The Farrelly Brothers' comedy Hall Pass. And even though the comedy has already begun filming, this week isn't any different. Variety reports that two more have joined the film, Richard Jenkins and Bruce Thomas (Kyle Xy). Jenkins will portray Coakley, a man who never settled down, while Thomas plays a baseball player. The cast includes Owen Wilson, Jenna Fischer, Jason Sudeikis, Stephen Merchant, Christina Applegate, Alyssa Milano, Larry Campbell and Vanessa Angel and J.B. Smoove. Last week we learned that Amanda Bynes left the project. Sudeikis co-stars as Wilson's best friend, who also gets a pass to get whatever ass he can. We have more...

The Farrelly Bros’ new comedy, Hall Pass, started shooting the other day – so it’s a relief to hear that they’ve completed casting with the addition of Christina Applegate, Alyssa Milano, Vanessa Angel and Larry Campbell. The movie stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as married men who receive a ‘hall pass’ from their wives that allow them to cheat, without repercussions, for one week, and one week only. Hilarity – and a bit of soul-searching – doubtless ensues.Angel, of course, has worked with Peter and Bobby Farrelly before, on their wonderful bowling comedy Kingpin (which, whisper it, just might be their best film), but Applegate and Milano are first-timers in the Farrellyverse. There’s no word yet on who the new additions will play, but as Jenna Fischer is already on board as Wilson’s wife, we’d bet that one of the totty-tastic trio – possibly Applegate – will play Sudeikis’ missus,...
