Apple TV+ is taking a shot at another sports-related comedy.
The streamer behind Ted Lasso has placed a series order for a show starring Owen Wilson as a former pro golfer who needs to get his life back in order. The Loki star will also be an executive producer of the untitled series, which comes from Apple Studios and creator Jason Keller (Ford v. Ferrari).
Wilson will play Pryce Cahill, whose golf career ended prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at a sporting goods store in Indiana and his wife leaves him, Pryce sees a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom as his way back.
The series seems to echo Ted Lasso in its sports-world setting and the possibility of a redemption arc for its main character. It will join a comedy roster at Apple TV+ that also includes Shrinking, Platonic, Loot and the upcoming Palm Royale.

In Spain there is a tradition called “la hora del vermut” (the vermouth hour) which refers to a little stretch of time before lunch when you sip vermouth to prepare your stomach for the meal to come. Spanish director Jonás Trueba’s “You Have to Come and See It,” one of the late-breaking joys of the Karlovy Vary competition, only just crosses la hora mark, but it is as sociable and swiggable as a draught or ten of sweetly fortified wine. In fact, it’s an aperitif that proves so satisfying, so simple and sunny and sage, that you might find yourself filling up on its drowsily erudite, oddly nourishing pleasures and forgetting about lunch altogether.
Even the opening titles are a zippy, witty delight, popping up onscreen in time to a skittery uptempo piano piece which, as we learn by the burst of applause that cutely occurs just as Trueba’s writer-director credit appears,...

Anthology films like The Year of the Everlasting Storm, wherein a flurry of esteemed directors create short segments tethered to a common theme, lack a strong track record. Take the Cities of Love series, September 11, or To Each His Own Cinema. All have memorable, if not masterful, pieces. But it doesn’t matter how many noteworthy names are involved or how great some shorts might be—the collective feature experience often falls prey to a certain disjointedness endemic to the territory.
It doesn’t help that the joint theme is pandemic isolation––a topic so few filmmakers have been able to tackle effectively in the immediate aftermath of quarantine living. Though this concept has inspired more cringe-worthy art than any thematic culprit, The Year of the Everlasting Storm offers hope.
It shows pandemic art is maturing and substantiates the idea that the more time we have to process, the more...

Bill Callahan begins his new song, “Pigeons,” with a greeting: “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” He signs off, “Sincerely, L. Cohen.” Sandwiching his own work between the names of two musical luminaries might seem the height of hubris — if Callahan weren’t such a damn good songwriter himself.
“Pigeons” is a spare affair, opening with finger-picked guitar and an evocative image: “Well, the pigeons ate the wedding rice/And exploded somewhere over San Antonio.” Taking its cue from Cash, the track has a vague cowboy sound — replete with horns and...

One of Netflix’s biggest success stories this year is unquestionably directors Chapman and Maclain Way’s “Wild Wild Country” docuseries. Now, an official soundtrack is set to be released this fall on Western Vinyl Records, home to Dirty Projectors, Caroline Says and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, among other indie darlings, Variety has confirmed. The compilation includes most of the songs heard on the six-part epic, including standouts from such artists as Bill Callahan and Damien Jurado. Variety caught up with Wwc music supervisor Chris Swanson to find out more about the music selection process behind the hit series.
How did you first get approached for the project? Did you pitch for it, or did the directors come to you?
I didn’t pitch for it, I was a big fan of the directors’ last movie [‘The Battered Bastards of Baseball’], which was also on Netflix. Great storytelling and I loved the score,...

John Maclean’s new film starring Michael Fassbender follows a long line of artful forays into the pathologies of America, from Wim Wenders to Philip Ridley via honorary European Jim Jarmusch
“Everyone’s allowed a past they don’t care to mention,” sings Bill Callahan in his 2011 song America!. For European film-makers however, delving into America’s murky past has created some of the most visionary cinema of recent decades. Wim Wenders and his disciple Jim Jarmusch, Emir Kusturica and the UK’s Philip Ridley – all have explored American identity, divining the pathology of the nation from their European vantage.
This week sees an addition to the genre: Slow West, starring Michael Fassbender and directed by John Maclean, formerly of the the Beta Band, who offers us his own gentle-hearted yet extremely graphic vision of that beguiling nation. The Grinder is executive produced by Nicholas Stoller, with Ground Floor creator Greg Malins signed on as showrunner. The show revolves around Rob Lowe’s character Dean Sanderson, an actor who plays a lawyer on television. When his show comes to an end, Sanderson decides to return to his family’s real-life law firm, considering himself qualified. Fred Savage plays Lowe’s brother, with William Devane and Mary Elizabeth Ellis also co-starring in the series.

Writer-director Johanna Moder's High Performance pits Daniel's economic status against his social status, testing the soundness of his moral fibre against his questioning of what it means to be free. Like a Sartrean hypothesis on freedom, Moder presents Daniel as a financially struggling actor as he battles against his bourgeois roots. Though Daniel seems to have a superiority complex due to his bourgeois upbringing, he purports to be more free due to his lack of corporate ties. As Daniel learns (to the soundtrack of Bill Callahan's masterful "Too Many Birds"), financial success is intrinsically tied with cheating and trickery.

If you're not already a fan of indie country crooner Bill Callahan, watching Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film will be like attending an hour-long set of a capable musician you'll probably forget about by the next day.
Directed by Callahan's partner, Hanly Banks, the misleadingly titled Apocalypse — actually the name of the singer's 2011 album — is short on memorable visuals, ideas, and stories. Between performance excerpts from Callahan's U.S. tour are too many filler shots of passing landscapes from the bus.
It's like looking out the window from the back seat of a car while another passenger drones on with nebulous, slightly grandiose statements. "A year ago I decided that symbols were everything," Callahan says by way of personal revela...

Factory 25 announced that it has acquired the world rights to Hanly Banks's concert film "Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film." The film centers on Drag City singer-songwriter Bill Callahan during a two-week tour from New York to California. Callahan has been a pivotal figure in the lo-fi movement over the past twenty years, both under his own name and the moniker Smog. The film takes an impressionistic look at his life on the road during his 2011 tour for his third album under his own name, "Apocalypse," which was selected by Pitchfork, Uncut, and Mojo as one of the best albums of 2011. The film played in 2012 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center as a part of their "Sound & Vision" series. "Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film" will see release at Brooklyn's reRun Theater on May 2, followed by screenings across the country in the spring. The film will hit VOD...

My alienation from current pop is almost complete; the only 2013 Top 40 material I enjoyed enough to play repeatedly was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, from an album released in 2012. So I am officially a cranky old fart. But there are more and more of us, and maybe fellow COFs will find this list useful. By the way, crossing that border of alienation made me think more than ever that saying my lists are of the "best" albums is nearly absurd, hence the new headline.
1. Wire: Change Becomes Us (Pink Flag)
This is my favorite Wire of this century thanks to more emphasis on Colin Newman's brooding. When allied to their chugging motorik beats, it's irresistible to me. There are still some uptempo burners that recall their beginnings in punk, and some more whimsical though still musically solid songs, but it's Newman's dark musings that made me play this repeatedly.

Our new film critic hails a love story cast in the mould of Badlands and Bonnie and Clyde
Comparing the work of fledgling film-makers to the sacred cows of the past rarely does them any favours, but writer-director David Lowery's second feature is so firmly grounded in the soil of Terrence Malick's Badlands, Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs Miller and Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde that it seems impolite not to acknowledge their influence from the outset. Set in the ethereal terrain of 1970s Texas Hill Country, and shot in the nostalgic natural light of a seemingly eternal magic hour, this beautiful, if somewhat self-aware, cinematic ballad sings of a doomed romance between two young outlaws, separated in the opening act by capture which leaves him behind bars and her holding the baby.

On Saturday, New York’s IFC Center screened Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and held a Q&A session with director David Lowery afterward. The Cranberry is dead. Long live the Cranberry.
The Psych season finales have long had a habit of taking things to a whole new level of seriousness – traditionally with the appearance of Yin and Yang and their personal interest in harming Shawn and his loved ones – but the rule of Conservation of Plot has always held firm: come the first episode of the next series, everything must be as it was.
Perhaps that’s why the idea that Henry might not survive his bullet wound never really crossed my mind. The whole interplay of Henry and Shawn – of father and son, and all the myriad daddy issues that their particular relationship throws out – is so pivotal to the show that losing...

As Jon Gruden rumors continue to swirl, a new source has stepped forth to deny claims that the fact his former Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff have joined the Dallas Cowboys means he'll soon follow. Monte Kiffin, Ron Marinelli, Rich Bisaccia and Bill Callahan have all recently joined the Cowboys' coaching lineup, which caused many to believe that Gruden would soon follow.
"Response from reliable team source when I asked if TB glory-days asst. coaches being hired in Dallas meant Gruden on way: 'Ridiculous,'" Espn's Ed Werder has tweeted.
This is just the latest rumor attached to Gruden's alleged return to coaching to swirl recently. Though he has shot down a claim that he'll take a coaching job with the Tennessee Volunteers, a recent report stated he's trying to get back into coaching after all. Gruden currently acts as an Espn analyst. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired him in 2008.

Premiering in the Next section at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, "I Used to Be Darker" marks Matt Porterfield's anticipated follow-up to his beguiling amalgamation of documentary and fictional narratives "Putty Hill." The film, which takes its title from a lyric in a Bill Callahan song, centers on the working life of two domestic musicians (Kim Taylor and Ned Oldham, who perform original songs in the drama). "This is a story about relationships," screenwriter Amy Belk told Indiewire. "People taking care of each other and letting each other go, looking for love and connection where they’ve found it before or where they might find it next. It’s about family: what pushes us away from our own, what draws us back, how we negotiate new terms of engagement as we carve our own space in the world." One of my favorite albums of last year was Bill Callahan‘s Apocalypse. The singer/guitarist residing in Austin has a unique sound, with an album that continued to grow on me with more listens. It looks like we’ll have a chance to actually see part of his tour for it, as a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for finishing the mixing and mastering of sound and color has successfully been completed. Check out an explanation of the project below, along with at teaser video and a performance from the tour below.
Here is a concert film/tour documentary/psychedelic thingamajig with musician Bill Callahan and his band. It is a collection of performances and a cross-section of scenes from the road on the U.S. leg of the apocalypse tour. More than that, it is a rare glimpse into the tour van windows of an important American songwriter.

USA Network’s longest-running series on the air, dramedy Psych, is extending its run. It has been renewed for a 16-episode seventh season that will premiere later this year. In a first, the news was broken by the series’ stars James Roday and Dulé Hill in a video on Psych‘s Facebook page and Twitter feed, which was unlocked by solving a puzzle with clues revealed throughout the day. “We are always trying to find ways to reward our Psych brand ambassadors for their loyalty and passion and social media plays a critical role in how we connect with the people who matter most — the fans,” USA co-presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel said. The recent 2011 portion of Psych‘s sixth season averaged 2.31 million viewers among adults 18-49 and 1.22 million adults 18-34 in Live+7, both series highs. The show returns with the conclusion of Season 6 on February 29. Psych is executive produced by creator Steve Franks,...

Despite what the radio might have you believe, Adele was not the only artist with a song out this year. As much as we've enjoyed hearing "Rolling in the Deep," "Countdown" and "Party Rock Anthem," played ad nauseum, 2011 was also a bang-up year for the unchosen ones -- the Adeles, Beyonces and LMFAOs of a parallel universe. So in the spirit of making a few new discoveries before the year ends, we've compiled 25 underplayed songs we've been overplaying -- a modest sampling from the year that you can dance to at your new year's eve party, and groan to the morning after.

Psych returns tonight at 10/9c, and the hit show isn't slowing down this season. Still loaded with incredible guest stars and pineapples, it's as fun as ever, and somehow still comes through fresh as the first season. Of course, even I have to admit that a couple of episodes last season went a bit off, but there were also some amazing efforts in there, and this season is kicking off with some brilliant shows.
Tonight's episode, "Shawn Rescues Darth Vader," brings us guest stars Malcolm McDowell and Polly Walker, and gives us not only a good case, but throws us right into the heart of the relationship/work troubles sure to arise betweeen Shawn and Juliet. The case finds Shawn stuck in a rather serious predicament, and one that means he has to get unusually specific in his predictions, which raises its own red...

Exclusive: Espn may have put the scripted plans for its own primetime on hold following the demise of short-lived dramas Tilt and Playmakers, but its production unit is looking to become a supplier of scripted series to other networks. Espn has sold its first scripted project, an untitled Boston sports fan comedy from former Scrubs executive producer Bill Callahan, to ABC. The project is described as a look at the relationship between four longtime guy friends, still living in their hometown outside of Boston, who gather once a week to watch one of their beloved teams play. Callahan is writing and executive producing, with Espn Content Development’s executive producers Vinnie Malhotra, who is shepherding the company’s current scripted efforts, and Joan Lynch also expected to produce. UTA-repped Callahan, who worked with Bill Lawrence on 2 of his series, Scrubs and Spin City, most recently served as an executive producer on USA’s Psych.
