Paramount+ today announced a new series order for Crutch, a half-hour comedy starring Tracy Morgan. The series will be set in the world of CBS Networks’ hit comedy The Neighborhood. It centers on its titular character, Francois “Frank” Crutchfield (Morgan)—or “Crutch” to those who know him well.
Crutch is a Harlem widower whose empty nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free-spirited daughter move back home. CBS Studios is producing the series, which is slated to begin production later this year.
Hailing from Cedric The Entertainer and his production company, A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, the series is executive produced by Cedric and Eric C. Rhone, along with Owen Smith, who wrote the premiere script and will also serve as showrunner; Aaron Kaplan for Kapital Entertainment; Wendi Trilling for TrillTV; and Tracy Morgan.

“There was always going to be pressure to make it special,” admits The Neighborhood executive producer Bill Martin about the landmark half hour for the sitcom that explores two racially diverse families living side-by-side in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Pasadena, California. “It had to have something meaty for each of our characters, and it needed guest stars, and it had to have emotional weight to it. And it had to be fun.” Leave it to someone very close to the show to concoct the perfect story: Cedric the Entertainer, who plays cantankerous Calvin Butler and is also an executive producer. “Cedric pitched the idea of roping in our friends at The Talk,” says Martin, who was instantly on board with the idea. The Neighborhood and The Talk crossover commences on Monday, April 10 at 8/7c on CBS with a desperate Calvin wanting to wow loving wife Tina (Tichina Arnold) with the perfect birthday present since,...

Letting go of a work routine he’s had for 30 years turns out to be anything but easy for Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer) in the January 16 episode of CBS‘s The Neighborhood. He should be putting his feet up after the substantial payday he got from selling his auto repair business, Calvin’s Pit Stop. In the latest episode of the comedy, he tries to embrace a life of leisure, traveling to Madrid with wife Tina (Tichina Arnold) for the honeymoon they never had. (See the clip above for how even boarding the flight doesn’t go smoothly for Calvin!). Here, Cedric tells us more: (Credit: Monty Brinton/CBS) Easing into retirement shouldn’t be so hard for Calvin, but it is. What’s going on? Cedric the Entertainer: It’s one of those things where you realize you have worked hard and deserve the opportunity to get a win in life.

Here’s something to make you happy that seasons of The Neighborhood are still coming out on DVD: TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the gag reel, a common feature on such sets, proves it’s hilarious. The clip from the Season 4 DVD (out on July 19) begins with Cedric the Entertainer (who plays Calvin Butler) making his castmates laugh, then Beth Behrs (who plays Gemma Johnson) finds herself laughing so hard that she has to step outside. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to act under these circumstances,” Max Greenfield (who plays Dave Johnson) says after she pokes her head back in the door to explain. “All I do is act under duress on this show.” Watch the video above to see the specifics of these two funny moments. If Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer) thought Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield) was too close for comfort before, wait until this bombshell drops! On Season 4 of the sitcom The Neighborhood, Dave takes a genealogy test, revealing the neighbors are distant cousins. “Calvin is less than thrilled,” says showrunner Meg DeLoatch, who previews what else is new on their California block. • Morning sickness? Dave’s pregnant wife, Gemma (Beth Behrs), is ill 24/7, says DeLoatch. Cue the toilet humor! • Calvin adds “pimp-my-ride pro” to his résumé as his auto shop gets into high-end design, while wife Tina’s (Tichina Arnold) side-hustle baking business finds success. Also, conflict mediator Dave takes on a celebrity divorce that “puts him on Hollywood’s radar,” DeLoatch adds. With all the division and emphasis on negativity in the country these days, The Neighborhood executive producer Jim Reynolds told TV critics at TCA on Wednesday he’s trying to “put forth a dialogue and have a cultural conversation with kindness which was always the intention of the show.”
After one TV critic described the comedy series as being written from the “black perspective,” Reynolds reminded it was originally based on his own experience moving into a predominantly African American neighborhood. Bringing in Cedric the Entertainer as a star and Ep “shifted” the series “to a more two-handed point of view.”
The show’s writers room is “one of the most inclusive” in TV sitcom-dom, Reynolds said; seven of its 11 writers are “people of color or female.”

Max Greenfield has a secret he’s ready to reveal. The “New Girl” star, who’s now part of the ensemble on CBS’ freshman comedy “The Neighborhood,” filled out an anonymous Emmy ballot last year for Entertainment Weekly — and a year after “The Leftovers” had its season finale, still tried to make it his best drama pick. It wasn’t eligible, mind you, but “I love that show more than anything else,” he recently told IndieWire’s “Turn It On” podcast.
“The fact that it didn’t get nominated for [nearly] anything makes me feel like the Emmys are bullshit, just on that alone,” he said. “It was just so perfectly done.”
Greenfield said he’s attracted to shows “that I know I can’t do… This is one that I’d watch and think, ‘I don’t know how this is happening. And I’m just going to watch it as a viewer.

Despite CBS rolling out two sitcoms that are both inspired by real-life events, the creative teams behind “The Neighborhood” and “Happy Together” insist family dynamics, rather than topical elements, will be at the core of both shows.
“We aren’t a show that’s like, ‘This week, ‘The Neighborhood’ takes on ‘this issue.’ I don’t think you ever teach anyone anything by telling them, by proselytizing, by poking and saying, ‘This is what you should think,’” “The Neighborhood” showrunner Jim Reynolds said at the Paley Fall TV Preview event Wednesday. “It’s about individuals, it’s not about black and white. … I’m a big believer in you win hearts, and then you change minds.”
“The Neighborhood” is based on Reynolds’ own experience of moving into a historically black neighborhood in Pasadena, California, and learning about local issues that were new to him. The show centers around patriarch Calvin Butler,...

The new CBS series The Neighborhood could easily be an Odd Couple-esque sitcom in which two very different families live next door to one another, and hilarity ensues. The comedy about a white family moving into a predominantly black neighborhood will certainly go for laughs, but producers said at TCA today that they hope the show opens a dialogue as well.
Ep Jim Reynolds joined the TCA stage with star and exec producer Cedric the Entertainer, Max Greenfield, Beth Behrs, Tichina Arnold, Sheaun McKinney, and Marcel Spears to talk about the comedy and what they hope to achieve with it.
The show is loosely based on executive producer Reynolds’ life when he moved into his current neighborhood. It stars Cedric the Entertainer as Calvin Butler, opinionated neighbor to Dave Johnson (Greenfield), the friendliest guy in the Midwest who moves his family to a a Los Angeles neighborhood where not everyone...

When Cedric the Entertainer joined “The Neighborhood,” the show immediately changed focus.
Creator Jim Reynolds (“The Big Bang Theory”) originally envisioned the upcoming CBS show, inspired by his family’s experience moving into a historically black neighborhood in Pasadena, as told through the perspective of his small-screen alter ego. Cedric’s arrival as star and executive producer called for a different approach.
Right off the bat, Cedric told Reynolds that he had a strong point of view, and the showrunner welcomed the input. “He gave us the benefit of having an authentic African-American point of view,” Reynolds says.
Now the show operates more as a two hander, the showrunner says.
Cedric plays Calvin Butler, a curmudgeon who casts a baleful eye on the friendly overtures of newcomers Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield) and wife Gemma (Beth Behrs). Calvin is wary that his new Midwestern neighbors will bring gentrification to his L.
