For Brian Wallach, the symptoms began with a tremor in his left hand – an unexpected development for a man of only 36. By that age he already was a veteran of the Obama White House, a Georgetown Law graduate and a former track athlete at Yale, where he got his undergraduate degree.
Within a few months, doctors confirmed the cause of that tremor, giving Wallach a devastating diagnosis: Als, a neurodegenerative disorder without cure. He had just become a father for the second time with his wife Sandra Abrevaya, but his medical team told him he would not live to see another year.

In a recent impromptu survey of Twitter, I posited the question: Who was the first disabled character you recall seeing on television? I remember characters in wheelchairs popping up here and there, usually in reruns. I recall watching the “Teen Line” episode of “Saved By the Bell” — wherein Zach Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) goes on a blind date with a girl he meets on a teen chat line only to freak out because, gasp, she’s in a wheelchair — during summer vacation from school. But more often than not, these characters weren’t actual people, just conflicts meant to give a teachable moment to the able-bodied main leads.
I’m sure to many a disabled television viewer that’s all they were doing — viewing these characters, but not actually identifying with them because the only thing to identify with was the disability. Remember how, as a kid, your mom would say...

Hell Den―a new animated series from Shout! It’s the last TV party on Earth and it’s pretty twisted. Welcome to Hell Den, the new, animated post-apocalyptic comedy series from Shout! Studios that debuts this Friday on the DrinkTV streaming platform. The show’s first trailer, exclusive to Deadline, is below but it contains coarse humor and is intended for immature adult audiences.
The six-episode series features the subversive riffing talents of the Dr. God comedy troupe as they re-dub vintage clips and crack wise in the satirical traditions of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 , Beavis & Butthead and Robot Chicken. The premise: Civilization has been obliterated but, somehow, a 12-year-old kid named Andrew has survived with his home (and the world’s last stocked liquor cabinet) intact. The TV still works, too, so he’s got some new friends over for a viewing party: Bet-c, the sympathetic but volatile mutant cyborg; Fleek, a sleazy, alcoholic alien; Giantic, a towering,...

Wayne Rooney is a surprise inclusion in the England squad for their clash with “The Auld Enemy” on Wednesday night.
The want-away United striker has played a mere 45 minutes in pre-season, and major questions will be asked whether a player with so little game time should have been included.
Aside from “Wazza”, it’s a vital preparation game for Roy Hodgson ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month. He’ll also have a chance to blood 31-year-old striker Rickie Lambert, the Southampton star who scored 15 Premier League goals last season is yet to be capped for England.
Scotland, under new manager Gordon Strachan, have been going well of late, winning 1-0 in Croatia courtesy of a Robert Snodgrass strike. It’ll be a chance for the former Liverpool manager to try out certain players, with international debuts expected for Brighton and Hove Albion’s defender Gordon Greer and Dundee...

The National Down Syndrome Society (Ndss) had its annual Spring Luncheon in New York City Tuesday afternoon, giving a warm welcome to Today Show Co-Host and Dateline Correspondent Hoda Kotb as its honored guest. Joined by self-advocate Jordyn Dannenbaum as well as many other family, friends, and supporters of the campaign, the event delivered inspiring speeches and raised an astounding $125,000.
"This is one of those things that you don't really know why you are being honored because there's a huge room filled with rock stars. I mean I was sitting next to Jordyn the whole time, who got honored today. I just felt so lucky to be next to her. To be honored by the group is just terrific," Kotb said of the event. "I actually have an aunt—my mom's sister who's like her favorite sister and I was named after her—my mom's sister has Down syndrome. So...

Home Nations rivals Scotland and Wales will face-off tomorrow at Hampden Park, with both sides needing a win to keep any hope alive of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The two bottom sides in Group A met last October at the Millenium Stadium with Wales emerging victorious thanks to a Gareth Bale double. James Morrison had earlier scored for the Scots and Steven Fletcher had a goal disallowed but like much of Craig Levein’s tenure as Scotland manager luck was not on their side.
Chris Coleman also has not endured the best of times as a national team manager. However, he picked up his second win as Wales manager in February when Austria were beaten 2-1. This gives them some momentum going into this match. Scotland also have a new sense of optimism with former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan now at the helm and he will be...

It’s not often that a recurring actor has generated enough buzz to warrant an Emmy nod — but Glee’s Lauren Potter may just be the exception.
The 22-year-old actress who plays Sue Sylvester’s sidekick Becky enjoyed not one but two big storylines this season. Her first breakout moment occurred in January’s episode titled “Yes/No,” in which Becky sets her sights on Artie (with heartbreaking results). And in the May episode of ”Prom-asaurus,” Puck crowns her queen of the “anti-prom.”

Comedian Jane Lynch is a woman who fights for what she believes in. She's known for fighting for the Lgbt community and supports President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage. However, this is not the only cause that Lynch supports.
This week Lynch was honored at the National Down Syndrome Society (Ndss) Annual Spring Luncheon. The event was hosted to celebrate people with Down syndrome and those who support them. Actor Chris Burke, known for his work on the ABC show Life Goes On, was also in attendance. It’s kind of all the rage to fight bullying these days — Lady Gaga, Glee, Demi Lovato, Ian Somerhalder — all our faves are taking on the mission. So is best-selling Ya author Susane Colasanti, with her newest novel, Keep Holding On, about a girl who’s sick of being ostracized for being poor and stands up to her tormentors. Colasanti herself was once a bullied teen, and she, like some of us, remembers that pop culture’s battle against mean guys and girls is nothing new. Back in the day, there was a fair share of books, TV shows and movies that dealt with bullying. Here, she shares her top 5 favorites:
The Outsiders
I was obsessed with both the book (by S.E. Hinton) and the movie in junior high. You would not have wanted to watch the movie with me. I was that annoying person who said every line of dialogue along with the characters.

Loretto, Pa. -- An Italian ex-boyfriend of actress Anne Hathaway has been released from a Pennsylvania federal prison following a real-estate scam.
Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke says Raffaello Follieri was released Friday morning from a prison in Loretto, 80 miles east of Pittsburgh. He says non-residents are usually transferred to immigration authorities.
Follieri pleaded guilty to cheating investors by falsely claiming he had Vatican connections that enabled him to buy church property at a discount. He was sentenced in 2008 to 4 1/2 years in prison.
Follieri agrees he owes more than $3.6 million to those he ripped off. The proceeds supported a playboy lifestyle that included a $37,000-a-month New York City apartment and lavish vacations with the star of "The Princess Diaries."
They dated for four years.

The current issue of Entertainment Weekly has a nice feature on TV performers with Down syndrome. Actors profiled include Luke Zimmerman (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Jamie Brewer (American Horror Story), and Lauren Potter (Glee).
Naturally enough, they had a brief profile on Chris Burke, the actor who played Corky on Life Goes On. The TV series was the first to have a main character with Down Syndrome and ran for four seasons and 83 episodes on ABC, from 1989 until 1993. Here are the highlights:
Though Burke is still recognized on the streets as Corky, he's most proud of his work as the goodwill ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society. He's served since 1994.
He counts Zimmerman as a good friend and is very grateful for the new opportunities for the DS community. He said, "It's given...

The rapper has big plans. First, he and wife Tiny will be going to his mother's home in Atlanta...

The Life Goes On tv show ran on ABC from 1989 until 1993. The series was never a hit and didn't even crack the list of 30 top-rated shows. Still, it's well-remembered as the first series to feature a main character with Down syndrome as a main character.
The TV show revolves around the Thatcher family. Drew (Bill Smitrovich) and Libby (Patti LuPone) struggle with typical family issues, as well as help their son, "Corky" (Chris Burke), integrate into the rest of the world. He eventually moves out, gets a job, and marries Amanda (Andrea Friedman) who also has Down's.
