In 1974, Tobe Hooper‘s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre changed the face of horror. Next month, actors Ed Neal, John Dugan, Allen Danziger, Teri McMinn, and William Vail will participate in the first official 50th anniversary cast reunion at Creep I.E. Con in Southern California.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Director Tobe Hooper's 1974 low-budget feature "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" is not just loved by those who embrace the horror genre; it's one of the most cherished examples of truly independent cinema ever produced. Made for just tens of thousands of dollars, Hooper's film birthed a horror legend for the ages in Leatherface, as well as a franchise that is actually still going to this day. That franchise would hit its apex in 2003 with a gritty, bigger-budget remake of Hooper's iconic classic.
Oddly enough, it was "Armageddon" and "Bad Boys" director Michael Bay who got the ball rolling on "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" remake, a movie that might have seemed like sacrilege for those who cherished the original. But...

The episode of The Black Sheep covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When did the Texas Chainsaw movies get so muddled with so many timelines? It’s not a hard thing to do. People get lost in Texas and end up victims of Leatherface and his family. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a story line or a variation on things from time to time, hell, that’s what made Freddy, Michael, and Jason so popular. You could have even done something like the legacy sequel for Halloween, at least the first one. Oh wait, you did, and it didn’t turn out well with characters that made terrible decisions and weren’t likeable in the first place? Oh yeah, I remember that one.

Remakes were all the rage in the 2000s. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, The Crazies, My Bloody Valentine, The Hills Have Eyes – and the list goes on and on. And then there’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
A Platinum Dunes creation, the 2003 remake did what most remakes fail to do: honor the original while doing something wildly unique and equally as cool. Director Marcus Nispel, also behind the Friday the 13th remake, carves out a special place in the pantheon of horror by trusting his instincts and letting the cast play (and scream along the way). 20 years later, the bright spot in the sea of mediocre remakes still operates on all cylinders, and in many respects, outpaces the 1974 original.

For most horror franchises, a decent fifth film seems to be harder to find than a Necronomicon and usually about as dumb as the guy who’d read it out loud. According to those who have seen Evil Dead Rise (now playing in theaters!), however, it looks like the franchise is now home to the rare fifth entry that actually rules. Hail to the King, baby.
It shouldn’t come as a big surprise to Evil Dead fans because this franchise doesn’t miss. Introducing time travel? No problem. Remake? Kicks ass. Fifth sequel curse? Come get some.
Now, let’s take a look at a handful of other fifth entries that have enjoyed that same rarified air. Here are in no particular order some of my favorite fifth horror movies….

"Firefly" premiered on Fox in 2002 and soared for 11 glorious episodes before crashing and burning due to network meddling and gross ineptitude. Three unaired episodes were included on the subsequent DVD release, bringing the final episode tally to 14. The series was briefly resurrected with the 2005 film "Serenity," which concluded the narrative in a satisfying enough fashion. For diehard Browncoats — the moniker super fans have given themselves — the series has an outsized hold on our hearts despite its criminally shortened lifespan. As the theme song says: "You can't take the sky from me (us)."
Though "Firefly" is an ensemble, Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) is the protagonist and its best character. He is the catalyst for most of the dire situations the group finds itself in, but his heart is in the right place. For Mal, life is simple: Find a job, see to your crew, and keep flying. In this installment of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Jonathan Liebesman’s unfairly maligned prequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.
While the production company is now mostly known for movies like The Purge and A Quiet Place, it was originally a series of horror remakes that put Platinum Dunes on the map. Flicks like 2005’s The Amityville Horror and 2009’s Friday the 13th made big money at the box office, but it was the astounding success of the 2003 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake that made this endeavor possible in the first place.
And with the success of that initial remake convincing Hollywood that brutal horror was still a sound investment, it makes sense that TCM would be the first movie in Platinum Dunes’ repertoire to garner a sequel. So where might a filmmaker go after a no-holds-barred splatterfest that ends with most of the cannibal family being...

Rock and Shock served as New England’s premier horror convention for 16 wonderful years before its reign came to an unexpected end in 2019. While several other events admirably attempted to occupy the void left in the local horror community, none were quite able to fill Rock and Shock’s sizeable shoes.
If its debut is any indication, Silver Scream Con is, at long last, a worthy successor to the throne. Created by Massachusetts’ own horror-inspired metal band Ice Nine Kills, the first ever Silver Scream Con took place August 26-28 at the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Ma.
Rock and Shock catered to the intersection of music and horror, but with Ice Nine Kills’ rabid cult following behind it, Silver Scream Con brought in a new audience beyond die-hard genre fans. Informal polls conducted before each panel consistently showed that more than half of the attendees were at their first horror convention.

Anyone who’s ever seen the movie The Program is well aware of who Andrew Bryniarski is. He’s the jacked guy that played the ‘roided up Lattimer. For later generations of movie goers Bryniarski also played Leatherface in the 2006 Texas Chainsaw massacre remake. Andrew Bryniarski is known particularly for playing imposing “muscular” roles which makes perfect sense given he’s 6’ 5″ and a former bodybuilder. He came to Hollywood for a short summer vacation to visit a friend, was spotted by a talent scout who set up a screen test for Joel Silver, and all of a sudden he was

Digital Spy presents Games on Film, a look back at the numerous (and quite often disastrous) movies based on video games. How closely do they stick to their source material, and how well do they hold up on their own merits?
Previous Games on Film: Super Mario Bros | Resident Evil
Street Fighter (1994)
Back in 1993, Street Fighter II was just about the coolest video game on the planet. Its genre-defining gameplay and colourful characters had made it the busiest coin-op in arcades across the globe, and creators Capcom saw in it the potential for a huge cross-media franchise, starting with a big screen adaptation.
Capcom wanted the film turned around fast in time for Christmas 1994 and hired action screenwriter Steven E de Souza (Commando, 48 Hrs, Die Hard) to write and direct the film in what would be his first and only directing job in Hollywood. A slapdash cast was assembled, propped...

As I mentioned in yesterday’s wrap-up of Platinum Dunes’ remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it didn’t seem like the team behind that film were thinking in terms of “franchise” when they set about to re-introduce Leatherface to a brand new audience. If they had, then I doubt the ending of that movie would’ve had as many finalities with their core group as it had; something that earns that particular remake bonus points. So, after winning over the skeptical fans and in lieu of a slew of similar post-Chainsaw horror movies that followed like Saw and Hostel (which Chainsaw producer Mike Fleiss also was involved with), the Pd gang started seriously contemplating an appropriate follow-up. And for them, the only story that made sense to tell was the one that came before the remake.

One of my favorite aspects of the old Fangoria Weekend of Horror shows was that they always kicked off the convention with a slew of upcoming horror movie trailers. In the days long before you could simply watch these previews on the Internet, you’d have to plan accordingly, make sure you take an early enough train into the city so that you wouldn’t miss the trailer reel show which was always first on the itinerary for Fango cons. And I’ll never forget when the very first teaser trailer for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake played in front of a packed audience. It was the one dubbed “the Michael Bay teaser” on the eventual DVD release, which was primarily a black screen and the sound of a girl hiding in a closet before we hear a chainsaw erupt to life and tear a hole in the door & in turn the movie screen.

The L.A.-based marketing agency Dilemma is seeking co-producers for a feature film adaptation of Martin Shapiro's horror comic "Chopper".
Described as a modern-day spin on "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", the story follows a headless motorcycle rider looking for vengeance in the afterlife.
Earlier this year, Dilemma produced an ambitious nine episode web series that introduced prequel storylines intended to set up the film (see the series here).
Tyler Mane and Andrew Bryniarski starred in the web series and will reprise their roles for the feature. Shapiro wrote the screenplay while J.C. Christofilis is producing. Shooting aims to begin mid-2013.

Variety report that a movie adaptation - described as a modern take on Sleepy Hollow - of Martin Shapiro's Chopper is in the works from Dilemma, who also produced the prequel web series starring Tyler Mane and Andrew Bryniarski. The comic tells the story of a supernatural headless biker named The Reaper, who seeks vengeance in the afterlife. There are beheadings, motorcycles, drug-peddling cheerleaders - all that lovely stuff. "Ultimately, the neverending viability of the horror genre combined with the exploding interest in shows like 'Sons of Anarchy' made my decision to bring our title character to life a no-brainer -- pardon the pun," said the writer/director of the web series, and the man who will work on the script for the movie with Shapiro, J.C. Here at Dread Central we're always happy to see justice being served, and that's exactly what happened for Andrew Bryniarski (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) as all charges of animal cruelty have been dropped.
TMZ reports Bryniarski has been vindicated! Days after the actor was busted for animal cruelty, the charges have been dropped. According to law enforcement sources the Santa Monica City Attorney decided to let the case go because the 25 dogs they found in Bryniarski's Rv all checked out "healthy and happy."
Previously Bryniarski insisted he was merely running a mobile adoption center for the dogs and said they were in good health and well fed. Now he plans to reunite with the dogs as soon as the shelter opens this morning and tells TMZ that he will continue operating the adoption agency from his Rv... just not in Santa Monica.

Following up on yesterday's report that Andrew Bryniarski (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) was arrested with his girlfriend this past Saturday for suspicion of animal cruelty, Bryniarski seems bound and determined to clear his name.
Today he let reporters into his Rv with cameras to show the condition that his dogs were living in. From what we can see, there's plenty of food and water and other pet care essentials, and the reporter onsite did confirm that said Rv did not smell at all like dog urine, etc.
Andrew went on to explain that he and his girlfriend had purchased the vehicle five days ago from a reputable animal rescue association with the intention of using it as a mobile adoption unit.
Since the reporting of this story, the rescue association confirmed Bryniarski's story when reached for comment. Good for you, Andrew.

In a truly sad and somewhat bizarre story making the rounds on the web today, Andrew Bryniarski (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) was arrested with his girlfriend this past Saturday for suspicion of animal cruelty.
TMZ reports that Bryniarski was arrested for animal cruelty in L.A. last week after cops said he was keeping 25 starving dogs inside his mobile home. Cops were dispatched to the actor's motorhome in Santa Monica at 10:30 Pm on September 8th after receiving multiple tips from a concerned neighbor who constantly heard the sound of crying dogs coming from Bryniarski's property. When cops approached the home ... no one was there ... but officers say they could see several metal dog kennels containing roughly 15 small dogs, all Pomeranians. Cops say they also noticed there was no visible food or water for the dogs and the place smelled like urine.

It's been a couple of months since last there was anything to report regarding the feature film debut of DC Comics' intergalactic badass bounty hunter Lobo, but alas, a logline has come. Read on for what the flick will be about!
According to It's on the Grid, "Lobo, a powerful alien bounty hunter, lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc." Yep, that definitely sounds like something Lobo would do. A bit of a no-brainer, no? Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is slated to play the titular character.
Lobo is an alien that works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Introduced as a hardened, rarely used hard-boiled villain in the 1980s, the character remained in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s, when he became one of the most popular and bloodier characters in the DC Comics stable.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson makes headlines wherever he goes because, well, he's The Rock, and that's all your candy ass needs to know. Over the weekend at Comic-Con the people's champ confirmed his Lobo involvement via Twitter.

Interesting rumors are coming in. A week or so ago news came that Warner Brothers was looking to bring Lobo to the big screen. Then a few days ago Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson hinted via his Twitter account he'd be playing a DC Comics character on the big screen. And now the third piece of the puzzle is here...
Bleeding Cool reports that "The Rock is going to play Lobo in Brad Peyton's upcoming film of the DC comics. An untested, unknown source opened up correspondence with us and told us a tale of 'a Hollywood party' at which Mr. Rock was a guest and told some fellow partiers that he was going to take the Lobo role." As you may recall, Peyton just worked with The Rock on the global hit Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. It just seems to all make sense, no?

In the world of sometimes needless comic book adaptations, there have been two absolute sins. One - the fact that we're still waiting on a good movie based upon Spawn and two - DC Comics' Lobo hasn't gotten any love. Thankfully one of those two things is about to change.
According to Deadline, Brad Peyton, who helmed the global hit Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, has just been set by Warner Bros. to rewrite and direct Lobo, the live-action film based on the DC Comics franchise. Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are producing.

Ladies and gentlemen, Chopper has arrived. And the tense initial offering has set the stage for the horror that is sure to come. Featuring a showdown between horror big boys Tyler Mane and Andrew Bryniarski, the first episode of Chopper, entitled Slice 1, certainly does a nice job setting the stage in the biker-themed horror series.
The twisted mysteries of Chopper lie intriguingly ahead for us, but for now this seven-minute set-up episode is going to have to be enough. We haven't even gotten into the supernatural aspect of the series yet (unless you count the awesomeness of Tyler Mane's beard), and I'm already roped in!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D Movie Poster. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D movie poster for the John Luessenhop directed film does not show any of the cast members except, perhaps, the arm of Dan Yeager who will be portraying Thomas Hewitt / Leatherface this tie around. It's an odd thing that the men who play such horror icons as Leatherface, Jason, Michael Meyers, and so on aren't really well known. Perhaps it's because their performance is little more than being huge and menacing. Well, according to Bloody Disgusting, the upcoming sequel to the original 1974 film, 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' has its Leatherface: an unknown behemoth standing at 6'6, Dan Yeager. He met director of the film, John Luessenhop by chance -- presumably while towering over a crowd of mere mortals. He's described by the director as: "[having] huge farm boy arms, a brooding brow. He's quiet, circumspect, and immediately struck a menacing chord with me. After five minutes, I could no longer think of anyone else for the role." Yeager even towers over men who previously held the mantle of Leatherface: Andrew Bryniarski, standing at 6'3, who played the character in the 2003 remake and its...
