Set in 1939 and told through the intertwining perspectives of characters enmeshed in a bizarre love triangle, writer-director Graham Swon’s sophomore feature An Evening Song (for three voices) is as visually robust as it is dramatically intimate. The story revolves around married couple Richard (Peter Vack) and Barbara (Hannah Gross)—a pulpy crime writer and a prodigious novelist, respectively—who move to a rural Midwestern town after years of city living. Shortly after arriving, they hire a local young woman named Martha (Deragh Campbell) who the couple find independently alluring despite (or perhaps largely due to) her striking innocence and pious nature. "I was wondering if you could have me not even talk when I come over here." Magnolia Pics has revealed an official US trailer for an indie comedy titled The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, written and directed by and starring indie NYC filmmaker Joanna Arnow. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight sidebar last year, and went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, Vancouver, AFI Fest, Montclair, Denver, and many others. A mosaic-style comedy following the life of a woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Filmmaker Joanna Arnow's hilarious comedy, executive produced by Sean Baker, follows a 30-something New York woman as time passes in her relationships. Also starring Scott Cohen, Babak Tafti, Alysia Reiner, Peter Vack, and Parish Bradley. This kind of super dry, awkward humor won't be for everyone,...

The filmmaker directs and stars in the feature that follows 30-something New Yorker Ann (Arnow) as she navigates casual Bdsm relationships, a mindless corporate job, and her overbearing Jewish family. The trailer shows Arnow seeking purpose through ball gags and pig costumes as she dates a slew of neurotic men who have ever-increasing eccentric erotic desires.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Actors (Betsey Brown)
With its central storyline revolving around a male actor (Peter Vack) adopting a phony trans identity in order to secure roles, Betsey Brown’s Actors is engineered to court controversy. But the film is more than empty provocation. Actors is about the inherent vulnerability it takes to be a working actor, and we catch glimpses of the ceaseless cycle of auditions and self-tapes listed as private on Vimeo. This includes one very funny early sequence in which Brown’s mother and father (played by her actual parents) walk her through a self-tape for a lewd part. It’s a role Brown knows she has little chance at landing, so why go through with the humiliation? Because born performers have no choice.

"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.
The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.
But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. Before his death, Mahoney had an incredible career in film and television — his supporting role as Martin Crane in...

In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, writer-director-star Joanna Arnow plays Ann, a thirtysomething woman in a long-term Bdsm relationship with the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). The film opens on a naked Ann lying in bed beside a clothed Allen, before she turns and robotically dry humps him while he feigns sleep. “I love how you don’t care if I get off,” Ann coos to him. “It’s like I don’t even exist.” While this moment immediately establishing the playful rules of Ann and Allen’s sexual agreement, Arnow also hits on an apt metaphor for the existential crisis of so many modern millennials: that they’re exposed and ignored in an unforgiving social climate still dominated by older generations.
Ann’s affair with Allen is indicative of the rest of her day-to-day existence. As a “Clinical eMedia Learning Specialist” at a banal New York corporate office,...

“I love that you never do anything for me…it’s like I don’t even exist.”
That’s what Ann, a depressed thirty-something New Yorker, tells her older on-and-off Bdsm lover in the first scene of writer-director Joanna Arnow’s “The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed,” in which the filmmaker also stars as Ann. Her heroine is an existentially moribund millennial wasting away in an anonymous-feeling corporate job who passes her time with sexual debasement when not quarreling with her nagging Jewish family.
This clever and disquieting indie unfolds at a clip somnambulant enough to match its lead’s spiritual stupor, whether she’s spreading her ass for her partners (clients?) or on the phone with her needling mother insisting that, no, she isn’t running out of breath despite trudging up and down the Manhattan streets.

In The Sweet East, a high school senior take a journey through fame, exploitation, and Delaware. Working from a script co-written with the influential critic Nick Pinkerton, Sean Price Williams’ punky directorial debut boasts both the cinematographer’s signature aesthetic and Pinkerton’s idiosyncratic, roguish worldview. Premiering this week in Directors’ Fortnight, The Sweet East––seemingly taking cues from John Waters––is cinema at its most playfully facetious, infectiously puerile, and flagrantly transgressive, and an early highlight of a Cannes Film Festival that, near its midway point, has been somewhat short on provocation.
The Sweet East stars a brilliant Talia Ryder as the Californian Alice in Williams and Pinkerton’s dirty East Coast Wonderland. In her first lead role since breaking out in Never Rarely Sometimes Always, she plays Lillian (one of many nods to D.W. Griffith), a faux-ingénue with a knack for ending up in dicey situations and an...

It takes a moment to settle into the rhythm of Joanna Arnow’s droll directorial debut The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. The beginning riffs on a familiar scene of lovers in post-coital repose before offering something so different, it’s hard not to laugh. Ann (Arnow) lays on the sheets, staring at Allen (Scott Cohen), who is asleep under the covers. She inches closer until she’s on top of him. Then, the humping begins. “I like how you don’t care if I get off,” she says, “because it’s like I don’t even exist.” To that, her lover tiredly replies: “Can you not?”
Like most of the dialogue in The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, this line is delivered without any affect or hint of emotion. Arnow’s directorial debut plays with the mundanity of existence by extracting...

The Sweet East Review: A Patchwork Of Curiosity, Connection, And Beautiful Strangeness [Cannes 2023]
When Andrea Arnold's "American Honey" debuted at Cannes in 2016, the world was ushered into a whirlwind of hopeful, harrowing, and empowering Americana that reshaped the emotional core of what it means to find yourself in a vast sea of new experiences. The next chapter in the Americana film canon, cinematographer-turned-director Sean Price Williams' "The Sweet East," takes the best of those elements and turns them on their ears, weaving a patchwork quilt of curiosity, connection, and unadulterated strangeness. It takes things, and I mean all things, a step further than past films of its type — and it makes sure its audience is along for the ride in all of its odd and audacious glory. After all, there is nothing more arduous and beautiful than living life, and there is certainly nothing stranger.

Todd Field’s TÁR simulates ethical complexity to “call into question” cancel culture, which—no matter what Gina Carano, Peter Vack et al. have to say about it—is not an unprecedentedly bold or unthinkable move; millions of Americans are waiting to nod in vociferous agreement. This prolonged opening (somewhere around 15 minutes) provides an excuse for a lot of expository background: Tár is an Egot honoree, a revered modern conductor, a lesbian who’s also the first woman appointed to lead a […]

Seemingly inspired by mumblecore filmmaking, Assholes actually plays out more like Troma’s take on the Brian Yuzna film Society, and under their auspices would have been titled something like “Attack of the Killer Assholes” or “New York Assholes Must Die.”
The story centres around three self-absorbed twenty-somethings coping with mumblecore ennui through drugs, therapy and family dinners. Adam, played by writer/director Peter Vack, is too busy getting stoned to pay attention to the fact that his now-sober sister, Adah, desperately wants his attention, and their parents’ attention, or anyone’s sexual attention – as she tells her analyst. Desperately horny, she hooks up with Adam’s best friend, Aaron (Jack Dunphy), whose anal obsession literally plumbs new depths of perversion.

HBO Max has released the trailer and key art for “Love Life,” slated to return for its sophomore season on Oct. 28. Emmy nominee and executive producer William Jackson Harper, best known for his role as Chidi Anagonye on NBC’s “The Good Place,” will lead the anthology series, which had previously focused on the character of Darby Carter, played by Anna Kendrick.
Season 2, which hails from Lionsgate Television and Feigco Entertainment, follows Marcus Watkins (Harper) after his marriage unexpectedly implodes. He is forced to rebuild his life brick by brick, hoping to find a love that will last, once and for all. Anna Kendrick’s Darby Carter found her person, Grant (Kingsley Ben-Adir), at the end of “Love Life” Season 1. And in the teaser for the second season of the HBO Max anthology series, the wedding gown-wearing Darby literally steps out of focus while celebrating her just-married status at a bar with her friends, and the show’s next protagonist enters the frame: Marcus Watkins, played by “The Good Place” alum William Jackson Harper.
Per HBO Max, the second season of “Love Life” focuses on Marcus as he comes out of a years-long relationship with the woman he thought was going to be his person. “The Bold Type,” which airs its fifth and final season premiere Wednesday night, might not have ever happened if it weren’t for Katy Perry. Former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles recalls the genesis of the series, inspired by her life at the top of the masthead, as stemming from a cover shoot with the pop singer years ago.
“It had gone really well. The one thing we asked her not to do was to Instagram anything from the shoot, because the pictures wouldn’t be out for another six weeks on the cover of Cosmo,” Coles recalls. “She promised she wouldn’t, and we all left feeling very high after the shoot. Within 20 minutes, she had posted the exact picture that we were going to use on the cover. I was beside myself. We couldn’t use the best picture because it had already been out there.”

I first heard about Pvt Chat during its long post-production period in 2019. The film struck me as too good to be true: an erotic drama, directed by Ben Hozie of Bodega, about a man (Peter Vack) obsessed with an internet cam girl (Julia Fox), along with supporting turns by Buddy Duress, Dasha and Anna from Red Scare, and Keith Poulson––not to mention a score by Parquet Courts’ Austin Brown.
With the film now in theaters and on digital, I asked Hozie to take part in a conversation, promising I “wouldn’t ask any boring or stupid questions.” He graciously agreed.
The Film Stage: One of the things I appreciate about Pvt Chat is how you handled the sex scenes—they’re super unstylized and raw, with an intimate, unpredictable quality. What was the process like? What were some of the conversations you had with the cast and crew to set the tone?...

Pvt Chat is a brilliantly creative, and somewhat risqué new feature, requiring, let’s say, a somewhat courageous leading performance. And that’s just what Peter Vack delivers, bringing internet gambler – and cam-girl obsessive – Jack to life. We had the pleasure of speaking to Vack about this release, as he tells us whether he had any apprehensions taking on a role of this nature, and what a pleasure it was to collaborate with co-star Julia Fox. And of course, given what was required of the talented performer, we couldn’t help but ask whether he’s going to let his parents give the movie a watch…
Watch the full interview with Peter Vack here:
Synopsis
Jack is an Internet gambler living in NYC who becomes fixated on Scarlet, a cam girl from San Francisco. His obsession reaches a boiling point when fantasy materialises in reality and Jack sees Scarlet on a rainy Chinatown street.

This mumblecore drama about a man’s obsession with an online sex worker is uncomfortably funny and semi-insightful
In a 2016 Vanity Fair article, Nancy Jo Sales wrote about prostitution going mainstream, describing a new economy of young people selling their bodies to pay off student loans or just to get by in the tough economic climate. On the same theme, Ben Hozie makes his feature debut with this semi-insightful, uncomfortably funny indie drama about a man who becomes obsessed with an online sex worker. It’s a film with a slackerish mumblecore vibe, and Hozie is refreshingly grown up about sex. But it’s hard to see how his film adds much to the conversation about intimacy in the internet age.

Ben Hozie writes and directs Pvt Chat, a psycho-erotic drama about a New York City based online gambler named Jack (Peter Vack) who begins an obsession with a cam-girl called Scarlet (Julia Fox), which leads to different places when he runs into her in real-life on the streets.
The movie begins nicely enough, with a heart-warming scene involving masturbatory fantasies related to high-heel shoes and cigarettes, but things get a little more adult from there. The way the film is shot feels very intimate, maybe too intimate, as we enter the up-close world of Jack and Scarlet’s noxious relationship (if relationship is even the right term). If you like your face rubbed in the seedy underbelly of after-hours psychosexual obsession in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, then “Pvt Chat” is the movie for you. Writer/director Ben Hozie’s great-looking indie knows how to conjure a gritty New York atmosphere of cigarette smoke and ennui in the city, but despite highly naked (in every sense of the word) performances from Julia Fox and Peter Vack, it .
And that’s not passing judgment on anyone’s sexual proclivities, as this movie assures. Jack’s (Peter Vack) taste is for women comfortably at a distance through a screen, as he spends his nights sending tokens to virtual cam girls who degrade him while he masturbates drearily. His professional life during waking hours is nonexistent: Despite seemingly plenty of disposable income, he can’t make rent on time, and his roommate recently died by suicide, leaving Jack with the bill.

It doesn’t get more cynical than the answer Jack (Peter Vack) gives to his own question, “What’s the common thread that connects every relationship you experience?” Scarlet (Julia Fox) nervously laughs when he asks it because she knows it’s rhetorical the moment he finishes. He doesn’t want her opinion. He wants to tell her what he thinks and does exactly that when explaining how we all exist to use others and be used by them. Just because Jack’s insight is overly cynical, however, doesn’t mean he’s wrong. A post-capitalist society built atop the internet that’s been consumed by the transactional ease of technological advances demands exchange, exploitation, and nihilism. Scarlet talks to Jack because he pays her. Jack talks to Scarlet because she fuels his orgasms.

Vertigo Releasing has debuted a new trailer for writer, director, and Bodega front-man Ben Hozie’s ‘Pvt Chat’.
Jack (Peter Vack) is a lonely internet gambler living in New York City. He quickly becomes fixated on Scarlet (Julia Fox) – a cam girl from San Francisco. As Jack learns more about Scarlet, he discovers her unrealized talent as a painter and begins to fall hard for her. His obsession reaches a boiling point when fantasy materializes in reality, and Jack sees Scarlet on a rainy street in NYC Chinatown. While Scarlet is clearly hiding her whole truth, milking Jack’s wallet in the process, she also seems to develop genuine feelings for him. Jack has to find out – is their emotional connection real or is he just being taken for a ride?
The film stars Peter Vack, Julia Fox and Buddy Duress.
