Springborn was joined by Janet Brown, executive vp, distribution, at the digital studio Gunpowder & Sky, and Matt Kaplan, president of Awesomeness Films, which focuses on creating content for the Generation Z audience, in a discussion moderated by Sanjay Sharma, president...

The deal adds a distribution element to the in-house development, production and financing capabilities of Gunpowder & Sky, founded by former CEO of Viacom’s music group Van Toffler, former global head of corporate development and strategy at Endemol, Floris Bauer, and Otter Media, a joint venture between At&T and The Chernin Group.
“Janet and her team have a great track record as a collaborative, transparent and forward-looking distributor,” said Gunpowder & Sky president Floris Bauer.
“With the acquisition of FilmBuff we have now realised our early ambition of operating a soup-to-nuts studio, helping to bring to life the vision of our creative partners, and distribute...

FilmBuff is a nine-year-old distributor founded by veteran sales agent John Sloss behind indie movies like “Senna,” Jared Leto‘s “Artifact” and the Oscar-nominated documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” Lately it has focused more on distribution deals for content creators with digital-first platforms like Mashable, YouTube and Vice. As part of the acquisition, FilmBuff CEO Janet Brown will become the executive vice president of the newly dubbed GunPowder & Sky Distribution.

Digital studio Gunpowder & Sky, which was co-founded by former Viacom and Endemol executives Van Toffler and Floris Bauer, has acquired FilmBuff, an indie content sales and distribution company. This means that nine-month-old Gunpowder & Sky now comprises in-house development, production, financing, and distribution capacities in its quest to develop subversive short-form and feature-length premium content. Now, the company says, it will be able to distribute and market originals globally across all platforms, and represent third-party producers and creators as well.
FilmBuff, which has offices in Los Angeles and New York, will be rebranded Gunpowder & Sky Distribution as part of the deal, and former CEO Janet Brown has been named Gunpowder & Sky’s Evp of distribution. Founded in 2007, FilmBuff was responsible for distributing the Oscar-nominated Exit Through The Gift Shop as well as Rooster Teeth’s Lazer Team. Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who died Monday at 87, had a much greater impact on the world of film than just inspiring an Oscar-winning role for Meryl Streep in 2011's "The Iron Lady." The woman who led Great Britain from 1979 to 1990 cast a long shadow over filmmaking in her country during her time in office, inspiring much reaction (pro and con) among filmmakers, inspiring some classic movies, and unwittingly giving major career boosts to some of our era's greatest movie talents. The conventional wisdom about Thatcher's impact on pop culture was that performing artists, being a lefty, proletarian bunch, hated her with a passion. Certainly the British musicians of the '80s, from Billy Bragg to Pink Floyd, composed numerous bitter protest anthems condemning her as a war-mongering tyrant who was strangling the working class. But the movies British filmmakers created during her three terms in office were a lot more ambivalent,...

I've just been scribbling a proposed story idea for the next season of Doctor Who. It goes like this: Doctor, Amy and Whassisface land on the Planet of The Top Hats And Tuxes – a doomy old planet full of misery run by the evil regime of Camos and Osbos, two perma-grinning posho androids who trundle around in top hats, bow ties and tuxedos. Anybody without a tux is mercilessly cut to shreds by Camos and Osbos. The Doctor stages a rebellion among the planet's inhabitants, and eventually they overthrow the nasty rulers by cutting off their life supplies – or draining their bank accounts dry. Doctor saves the day. Amy shouts something sarcastic at the top of her voice. Whassisface dies and then comes back to life for a celebratory happy ending.
The end!
Well, you never know, it might work, although since there's a hang-gliding pig breezing past my window,...

When writer-director Tom Kalin brought his first feature, "Swoon," to the Independent Feature Project's 1991 Independent Feature Film Market, he recalls attending "a charming, homespun affair" with his fellow producers, Christine Vachon and James Schamus. While there, a three-minute reel of "Swoon's" best images and moments at the market captured the attention of acquisitions execs from Fine Line and PBS' "American Playhouse." As a result, Kalin headed off to Sundance the following January with the film presold and on its way to being viewed as a milestone of "new queer cinema."That was then. Today, the Big Apple's Ifp market celebrates its 30th anniversary with a new name -- Independent Film Week, running Sept. 14-19 -- and is a mix of old visions and new strategies. Through the years, however, Ifp's goal has remained consistent: to open doors and create possibilities for aspiring filmmakers with plenty of talent but little money and few connections.

An esteemed group of TV jour nalists, but no one from ABC News, has been chosen to moderate this fall's presidential debates - raising eyebrows in the industry.
NBC's Tom Brokaw, CBS' Bob Schieffer and PBS' Jim Lehrer will moderate the upcoming debates between Barack Obama and John McCain. PBS' Gwen Ifill will moderate the vice-presidential debate.
But the absence of anyone from ABC has some insiders wondering if the network was snubbed due to last April's Obama-Hillary Clinton primary debate,...
