Hollywood actors had barely inked a new labor deal with major studios and streamers last November when the lights in Ontario film studios flickered on and local talent and technical crews eyed a quick return to work on American shoots.
But the homecoming for Hollywood after the grueling SAG-AFTRA strike has hardly gone as envisioned in the Canadian province, which is known for doubling for U.S. locales such as New York, Boston, and Georgia. According to Ontario production insiders, the province that once defied gravity as a booming production hub for Hollywood has come back down to earth, with production slower than expected and lower budgets on projects that are filming there.
“It’s been a slower ramp-up in business than most anticipated. But we’re starting to see a pretty good increase in business, especially in the past few weeks,” says Garin Josey, chief operating officer of Sunbelt Rentals Film & TV,...

Season 1 of "Reacher" was a huge hit for Amazon, which is just as well considering the amount of work that went into making the show. When the series based on Lee Child's popular Jack Reacher books hit Prime Video, it instantly smashed Amazon streaming records. All of which suggested that leaving behind Tom Cruise, who'd starred in two movies based on the novels, and starting anew was a shrewd move on Child's part.
"Reacher" treated the two Cruise films as if they never happened, casting new lead Alan Ritchson and taking Child's tales of a traveling ex-military policeman who can't help but find trouble into the streaming age. Adapting the very first Jack Reacher novel, "Killing Floor," the first season followed the titular former Army officer as he visited the fictional small town of Margrave, Georgia, where he very quickly uncovers some sinister corruption at the heart of...

Ontario has long been Hollywood’s go-to for Anytown, USA, for film and TV production. But fans of Amazon’s Reacher might be surprised to learn the crime thriller’s first season, which is set in a fictional rural Georgia town called Margrave, was mostly shot in an undeveloped corn field in Pickering, Ontario.
“Our original plan in the summer of 2020 was to shoot on location in a real Georgia town, but due to the pandemic, we pivoted to Toronto, where there were fewer Covid-19 cases and where we would be able to build a replica Georgia town — and fully control it,” says Drew Brown, executive vp production at Skydance Television.
The rural Georgia street- scape — with 30 stores and shops, a main square and gazebo, a police station and town hall, the Margrave diner, a barbershop, a gas station and one residential cottage — was well isolated from neighbors,...
