Monster stories are about as old as storytelling itself, with every primitive society coming up with their own unique spin on man-eating creatures. That’s why it makes sense that writers and filmmakers are still providing us with fresh twists on these ancient tales well into the 21st century, though some of these updates are more successful than others. One monstrous re-imagining that I believe deserves a little more love from genre fans is Howard McCain’s Outlander, a 2008 thriller that loosely re-imagines the classic Beowulf story as a sci-fi monster movie.
Curiously enough, the movie that would become Outlander began life way back in 1992, with McCain coming up with an early iteration of the story which was later rewritten by screenwriter Dirk Blackman. This initial version of the film was intended to be produced independently in southern New Zealand, though it was ultimately never made. It was only in...

On July 28, 1999 Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea swam into theaters and was the first big shark movie to terrify audiences. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, LL Cool J (“In the House”), Thomas Jane (“The Thin Red Line”) and Michael Rapaport (“Cop Land”), the thriller grossed over $73 million.

We have a lot of love for 1999’s Deep Blue Sea, from Samuel L. Jackson’s performance to the somewhat bonkers plot. A direct-to-video sequel came out in 2018 and while it wasn’t particularly well received, a third entry in the series is now reportedly planned for Netflix.
We’ve known since last year that Deep Blue 3 is in development, and more recently that the sequel will be rated R and may be out this summer. It’s worth, then, taking a look at everything we know right now about Deep Blue Sea 3, from the plot to the cast.
First off, IMDb are listing a release date of July 28th, 2020, and as previously mentioned, the MPAA have granted the movie an R-rating. The latter certificate means that we should be getting plenty of genetically-enhanced shark gore, one of the strengths of the original 1990s film. If Deep Blue Sea 3...

Pregnancy is already not treating Valerie (Natalie Paul) well by the time she and her doting husband Tom (Michael Cassidy) meet fellow mother-to-be Jenny (Tina Majorino) at a crunchy yoga class (mama-ste!). She’s been ill, had to take a leave of absence from work, and is wholly disinterested in finding out the baby’s gender. Even more worrisome, her phone won’t stop buzzing, and the mix of fear and shame that accompanies every text and call from “Riley” seems to send her down a new rabbit hole. When the peppy Jenny asks her what she’s most looking forward to, Valerie has a litany of ideas: getting her body back, not puking so much, going back to work — oh, and something about the baby, maybe?
Sure, yeah, the baby will be neat, too.

Even though "Conan the Barbarian" remake has recently wrapped shooting, filmmakers are already working on the sequel. According to ConanMovieBlog an early draft of the script has already been written by Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain, and a trusted source has seen it. The source says that the new movie is based on a single Robert E. Howard story and stays close to Robert E. Howard's creation. "The best feature of the script was the characterization of Conan," the source reported. "There is no doubt this is Howard's young Conan. Tough, smart, confident, unflappable and pragmatic, the script offers Conan a chance to evolve a good bit during the course of the film. His road to a throne is definitely intimated." The first "Conan" film is set to hit theaters next year, so a sequel will likely not get greenlit until box office results are in. Since the budget is estimated to be $90 million,...

"Dead boys, dead boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when Zeros come for you?" I do hope those lyrics are included in the opening theme song for "Zeros", one of the seven newly announced programs Syfy has in development. If zombies don't tickle your fancy, then Kevin Sorbo back fighting mythological monsters and Lee Majors getting all bionic again might.
Of greatest interest to horror fans is going to be the zombedy "Zeros". Here's how Syfy's press release describes the show.
In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.

Marcus Nispel has been signed to replace Brett Ratner in the Conan remake for Nu Image/Millennium Films. Nispel has a history of unwanted remakes, starting with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the recently rebooted Friday the 13th. He was also behind the generally hated Viking movie Pathfinder.
The news of his hiring originated at Chud, whose inside sources told Devin Faraci the list was narrowed to three and then finally Nispel. It was later confirmed by Variety. Conan’s big screen reboot was supposed to start filming in Bulgaria this August, but the plan was likely rearranged when Brett Ratner dropped out due to scheduling issues.
As for the story, there aren’t many details out just yet. Nispel insists it will be failthful to the original source material, something he’s had plenty of practice telling the press. Outlander screenwriters Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain were brought in...

Conan the Barbarian has a director, and it isn't Brett Ratner. That's the story according to Chud, who reports that horror director Marcus Nispel has signed on the dotted line, and will direct the remake / reimagining for Lionsgate.
Remakes are familiar territory for Nispel, who has helmed our latest versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. I haven't seen either (though I am sure Scott Weinberg will rectify that soon), but I know they were heavy on the gore and action. With Outlander writers Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain giving the script a rewrite last year, I think you can picture just what Nispel and Lionsgate are aiming for ... lots of pulpy, bloody, R-rated action. While I'll hold out some hope for character development, I'll take comfort in the fact that the Barbarian's sword will meet flesh and bone with a suitable level of blood and crunch.

Outlander is a rocket of a film that blends medieval fantasy with sci-fi for the story of a humanoid alien who crashes on Earth during the time of the Vikings and accidently brings a nasty space critter with him. The movie is fast-paced, full of action, and a ton of fun to watch. Directed by Howard McCain (who also wrote the film with Dirk Blackman), Outlander stars James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, John Hurt, and the great Ron Perlman (although he is only in a few scenes). The film.s plot is straight-forward, and only requires you to turn the brain off. Caviezel takes on the role of the space man Kainan . who crashes to the Earth...

Chicago – “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” is easily one of the weirdest movies of 2009. It’s a werewolf movie that plays like a variation on “Gladiator” or “Spartacus” with the foundation of “Romeo & Juliet”. Solid work by the excellent Michael Sheen nearly redeems the film but an awful screenplay, dull design, and plodding direction sink this bizarre prequel.

A few days ago, fantasy fanboys breathed a sigh of relief when it was announced that Brett Ratner had dropped out of the upcoming Conan reboot [1]. Apparently it was mainly a timing thing; Lionsgate wants to move fast on this project, with shooting scheduled to start on August 24th. Clearly they'll need to secure a new director as soon as possible, and according to Chud [2], they may have already found their replacement for The Rat: James McTeigue. McTeigue is best known as the Wachowski Brothers's right hand man, having directed the Alan Moore adaptation V for Vendetta, and also the upcoming Ninja Assassin. The weird thing is, IMDb [3] also lists McTeigue as being in talks to direct X-Men Origins: Magneto, which although scheduled for a 2011 release, may potentially put him out of the running for Conan. Either way, this could be the first time McTeigue has directed something without the Wachowskis backing him up,...

Brett Ratner, the director of "X-Men: The Last Stand", has apparently fallen off the director seat of "Conan". Discussing the matter with Empire magazine was producer Joe Gatta, who claimed that scheduling conflicts have forced filmmakers to look for another director to do Ratner's job for the project.
"We're currently in the process of hiring a director," Gatta confessed. "For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn't work. But you never know what can happen."

Kevin Grevioux is a very busy guy these days. Along with developing I, Frankenstein at Death Ray Films, the prolific writer will be making his directorial debut with the theatrical adaptation of his graphic novel The Pale Horsemen, which will be produced by Larry Meistrich's Nehst Studios.

As we've mentioned previously, a third Grevioux graphic novel, Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction, is still on track for a live action feature with script writing duties on that project going to Outlander and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans scribes Howard McCain and Dirk Blackman.

It really sucks to be put in a position of taking Brett Ratner's word for anything, given that he's that director who destroys anything worth loving. But when it comes to the planned remake of Conan the Barbarian, even Ratner's promises are soothing, because we've got to have something to look forward to. So be wary when Ratner promises he won't tarnish our memory of the original Schwarzenegger movie, but also be grateful he's giving us hope. Ratner told MTV Movies that his planned take on Conan won't be based on the movie, but going off the original legend. "The script is very cool, contemporary. It's not an homage. It's not a remake, really. It's going back to the original source material - the mythology of the characters." He's still not saying exactly what he'll be doing on the movie, but admitted that he digs the screenplay by Dirk Blackman...

Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain, two of the three writers behind the Werewolves and Vampires flick Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, have signed on to adapt the Red 5 comic Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction for Benderspink. Zmd is a six-issue comic book limited series published created by American comic book writer/creator Kevin Grevioux who wrote the original screenplay for the first Underworld. The story revolves around a government weapons program that drops photosensitive zombies into war zones at night to destroy the enemy population. When one of these zombies somehow escapes in the Middle East, a team of elite soldiers must enter hostile territory to stop a growing zombie army. Blackman and McCain also scripted the Viking flick Outlander and are attached to write the screenplay for the upcoming Conan reboot. Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain must be at least somewhat good at writing fictional monsters. Hr reports that the duo behind Underworld: Rise of the Lycans have been picked to write the film adaptation of the Red 5 comic, Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction. Comic book-centric production company, Benderspink (Y: The Last Man) is set to produce. How is Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction going to be different from every other zombie flick out there? Well, these zombies are created by the government to be used as weapons. The zombies are engineered to liquefy in the sunlight. Something goes wrong and one of the zombies, dubbed Zombie Zero, survives the sun and starts spreading mayhem by turning people into zombies. The comic follows a group of soldiers sent on a mission into the Middle East, where the zombies are spreading. The comic was written by Underworld: Rise of the Lycans creator...

The writers of this year's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans will now trade werewolves and vampires for zombies.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain will now begin work on Red 5 comic's Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction for Benderspink studios. The comic from Underworld's Kevin Grevioux focuses on a covert group of highly-trained soldiers sent to the Middle East to stop an army of the living dead. No word on who will be directing or starring in the horror-action film.

According to The Hollywood reporter, Benderspink have enlisted Outlander team, Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain to helm their epic adaptation of Red 5 comics' Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction which "follows an elite team of soldiers sent on a covert operation into hostile territory in the Middle East to stop what they soon discover to be a government-created army of the undead."
Because of Outlander, a movie that nobody seemed to want to begin with, Howard and McCain have certainly found a ton of work. They co-wrote the new Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and are also attached to pen the first crack at Millenium's Conan reboot (which a little bird told me is being pursued heavily by Friday The 13th director Marcus Nispel... fingers crossed).

When Kevin Grevioux told ShockTillYouDrop.com a few weeks back that things were moving along on Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction , he wasn't kiddin'. Grevioux, who created the "Zmd" comic book published by Red 5 Comics, is reuniting with his Underworld: Rise of the Lycans scribes. Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain have been hired by Benderspink to adapt the series. The pair also previously collaborated on last month's limited release Outlander . "Zmd" drops a U.S. special ops team into the Middle East where an experiment involving the undead has failed and a zombie outbreak must be contained before the whole world finds out what's happening.

The writers of both Outlander and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, which both managed to come out on the exact same day, have been announced as nabbing scripting duties for Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction, the Red 5 comic created by Underworld trilogy star Kevin Grevioux.
THR reports that Howard McCain and Dirk Blackman will be putting pen to paper for the script, which is about a covert team of elite soldiers who are sent into the Middle East to try and stop what they soon realize is a government-controlled army of zombies.
Sounds like it could be fun; the comic’s been well received during its short run so hopefully the film will be as well. No word on a director for the project yet but we’ll keep an ear to the ground and drop you more when it drops on us.

Fast-rising writing duo Dirk Blackman (pictured) and Howard McCain – the team behind mad Vikings vs aliens movie, Outlander – have just been tapped to write the movie version of the comic book, Zmd: Zombies Of Mass Destruction. The Red 5 title, created by Kevin Grevioux, the impossibly deep-voiced dude who co-created Underworld (the latest iteration of which, Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, was co-written by… Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain), follows an elite team of soldiers sent into the Middle East on a covert mission. They soon find out that they’ve been sent, in what seems like a suicide mission, to take out a zombie army. Yikes.Sounds suitably high-concept for McCain and Blackman, who forever endeared himself to Empire when he popped over for a highly entertaining Outlander Q&A at last year’s Movie-Con. There’s no word, though, on what this means for their take on Conan, for...

Like Jello, there's always room for zombie movies, and when it's called Zombies of Mass Destruction, all the better.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain will adapt the comic book Zmd: Zomibes of Mass Destruction for Benderspink. The production company has had great luck with comic book acquisitions recently, with Y: The Last Man headed to New Line and Pet Robots finding a home at Disney.
The writers co-wrote the recent Underworld prequel, and that notwithstanding, have sauntered into the plum job of adapting Kevin Grevioux' comic about soldiers on a covert mission in the Middle East who discover that their real task is to stop its own government's growing zombie army.

There’s a stolid integrity to the Underworld movies, the goth-action series about a blood war between werewolves and vampires. Inspired as much by video games as by vampire-werewolf lore, the movies, starting in 2003, are in many ways the opposite of their contemporaries—solemn, serious-minded and insistently plot driven, to the point that it’s often difficult to sort through the rambling excess.

The players: Director: Patrick Tatopoulos, Writers: Howard McCain, Dirk Blackman, Danny McBride, Cast: Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra, Shane Brolly, Kevin Grevioux
Facts of interest: Patrick Tatopoulos did the creature design in all three films.
The plot: The film explores the origins of the battle between the Lycans and Death Dealers.
Our thoughts: It’s about time to close the gates to this underworld for good. Patrick Tatopoulos’s prequel “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” is not exactly a monstrosity, but the third installment in the series that kicked off with “Underworld” in 2003 fails to offer us anything we haven’t already seen in the predecessors.

As a prequel to the previous two films in its trilogy, Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans doesn’t so much answer burning questions they posed as dramatize backstory that has only been spoken of before. And it raises a few queries of its own.
To wit, what exactly are the rules of werewolf transformation? There are a number of meaningful shots of the full moon, but it generally seems that the Lycans can assume beastly form whenever they please. The vampires (a.k.a. Death Dealers) who rule the medieval-ish land in which Rise is set keep the captive, enslaved Lycans from assuming hair and fangs with special collars—and yet hero Lucian (Michael Sheen) doesn’t go monstrous at certain points late in the film when it might be advantageous to do so, even though he doesn’t have a collar on.
Best not to ponder details like this...

“Digital effects and animatronics are completely different,” says three-time Underworld producer Richard Wright on the set of Rise Of The Lycans, stating the obvious before continuing, “But sometimes they’re kind of melded together. In this film, we have basically three types of effects.
“We have the on-set gags like wirework—and there is a ton of that—as well as animatronics and special makeup,” Wright continues. “The director, Patrick Tatopoulos, has an effects company and started in the business doing makeup and animatronics, so there is a natural confluence. He has been involved in the first two UNDERWORLDs and was actually the production designer of the second film—a real Renaissance man. We’ve done a ton of animatronic effects on this film, and then we have the computer work, which comes last in this whole process.
“The problem,” he adds, “is that digital effects are getting so good...

IGN Movies has debuted a new trailer for Third Rail Releasing’s creature feature Outlander, starring Jim Caviezel. You can check it out at the bottom of this item.
Set in the time of the Vikings, the film casts Caviezel as Kainan, an extraterrestrial soldier whose spaceship crashes on Earth, releasing a savage alien beast called the Moorwen. As the monster runs rampant, Kainan must team up with the initially untrusting Vikings to put a stop to it; Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, Fango fave Ron Perlman and Alien’s John Hurt co-star. Directed by Howard McCain from a script he wrote with Dirk Blackman, Outlander at one point looked like it was going direct to DVD, but instead will receive limited theatrical play from Third Rail January 23 (when it will compete with Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans—which McCain and Blackman also co-scripted). The movie’s official website should be open soon here.

The final poster for the sci-fi adventure flick Outlander has popped online. It stars James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, Katie Bergin, Ron Perlman and John Hurt. It was directed by Howard McCain, who co-wrote it with Dirk Blackman. McCain and Blackman also penned the upcoming Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Outlander takes place during the reign of the Vikings, with Kainan (Caviezel), a man from a far-off world, crash landing on Earth and bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry. The flick has faced delays but will finally hit theaters in limited release on January 23, coincidentally the same day as Rise of the Lycans.

The Outlander saga has certainly been a long and winding and often bumpy road. First it's a straight to dvd release, then it's not, then early reviews are good, then screenwriters Dirk Blackman and Howard Mccain are put in charge of writing the new Conan reboot and then Weinstein decide to finally give it a limited theatrical release.
Well now, to solidify this even more, Weinstein has sent us the first poster for the film. While not nearly as cool as the first one that dropped way back in April, it's still got something. I'm not entirely convinced that when you've got a film that stars James Caviezel, Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Sophia Myles, and Jack Huston you're doing yourself justice by capitalizing on just Caviezel, but then again he was jesus.

We've heard rumors left and right about the proposed Conan movie slated for sometime in 2009, but so far no one has ever stepped up to the plate. AICN confirms today that Brett Ratner will officially be taking the reigns on what (I now predict) will be a big flop. How does this guy still get hired to direct big budget movies? I know I didn't give any of my money to Rush Hour 3, did you? I don't think I need to explain what Conan is all about anymore. As a reminder, Lionsgate announced in August two new writers, Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain, who scripted the still unreleased Outlander Viking sci-fi movie. Instead of even mentioning that 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, Lionsgate is going all the way back to Robert E. Howard's pulp stories first published in the 1930s. This isn't a remake, it's a reboot, if even that.

Rumor has it Brett Ratner may be directing the newest version of "Conan". According to Dread Central, production company Nu Image Films have been offering the "X-Men: The Last Stand" helmer a position behind the lens for this reboot project. Nevertheless, there is yet any confirmation over the speculation.
Prior to Ratner's directing rumor, a list of filmmaker names has been put out for the possible helmer position. Those who have been lined up for the role included "Die Hard" helmer John McTiernan, "Hitman" helmer Xavier Gens, "Grindhouse" co-director Robert Rodriguez as well as "Halloween" remake helmer Rob Zombie.
"Conan" has been reported to be fast tracked since the studio producing it brought in Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain to rewrite the script earlier. The action adventure film for Lionsgate Films is produced by Boaz Davidson, George Furla, Joe Gatta, Avi Lerner and Fredrik Malmberg. Slated for 2009 release, it allegedly...
