After the rolling laughs, hoots, hollers, whistling and clapping at tonight’s world premiere of Road House at SXSW on Friday, Amazon MGM Studios may want to think again before putting this Jake Gyllenhaal-Conor McGregor rock ’em sock ’em beefcakes pugilist movie on Prime Video. It doesn’t take an elbow to the head to wake up to the fact that Road House clearly needs to make a destination to cinemas.
The jam-packed Paramount Theatre here in Austin, TX devoured this Doug Liman-directed movie like a dozen beef ribs from Terry Black’s Barbeque. By no means was this last-minute, unexpected trip for Liman a waste of time for the filmmaker.
While the streamer has turned a corner and committed to theatrical, and is largely judicious in making the proper call as to what goes on the service or on the big screen, this non-stop action-in-paradise movie,...

Zombies often take the horror-comedy to a new level. In their shambling quest to mine humor from the most horrific circumstances, zombie comedies invert the apocalyptic nihilism that an outbreak of the undead tends to elicit. They also subvert the expectations of zombie horror, frequently going meta to poke fun at some of the most time honored tropes.
Because it’s Monday, we could all use a laugh or three. So, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to zombie comedies that aim not for the jugular (or brain) but your funny bone.
These five zombie comedies find unique ways to play with the genre and get silly with it, messing with form and era in the process. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Ten years ago, Disney’s “John Carter” opened nationwide.
Meant to be a potential franchise-starting blockbuster, it was savaged by critics, who called the film “wanly plodding and routine” (Entertainment Weekly), and “a giant, suffocating doughy feast of boredom” (The Guardian), and was met with indifference by general audiences, who simply didn’t show up..
Quickly, the movie and its fate took on a nearly mythical dimension – it wasn’t just a box office disappointment, it was a staggering creative and commercial failure, the kind of movie that is often mentioned in the same breath as other high-profile misfires like “Ishtar” or “Waterworld.”
But the actual story of “John Carter” – how it was conceived, what happened during production, and how it all fell apart thanks largely to a misguided marketing campaign – is much more complex and much more interesting.
Most Hollywood bombs are perceivable early on, through a toxic combination of untested filmmakers,...

From The Cabin In The Woods and Ghostbusters through to Pan's Labyrinth: the movie monsters that make a huge impression in their one scene.
Screen monsters come in all shapes and sizes, from the bizarre beauty of Giger’s Alien all the way through to the very human evil of Seven’s John Doe. Audiences have a strange relationship with these creatures, being both repelled and fascinated by them at the same time. This push/pull attraction has been going on since the birth of cinema, and it’s likely to continue for many years to come.
Sometimes the most enduring creatures are the ones that pop up, steal the movie and then swiftly exit stage left. It could be their unique design or the impact they have on the story, but for the monsters included here, all they needed was one scene to impact on our collective nightmares.

Tales from the Crypt is like visiting a carnival. You go to the peep show and see the ladies, and you run around getting startled by the roller coasters letting your guts rollick around. But, as you make your way to the ends of your journey at the carnival, you see a tent out in the middle of nowhere. And as you pull that flap back, you just know that on the other side, it’s going to be the scariest damned thing you’ll ever see. And chances are, it is. ‘Dig That Cat … He’s Real Gone,’ is another example of a show continuing to mold and manufacture a tone that it would utilize all up and down it’s seven year run. It’s the third episode, and we’re seeing a different feel for how the story is being told.

The buddy cop sub-genre is always a hard task to nail as witnessed in Kevin Smith’s groan-inducing Cop Out. The key is getting two likeable leads that can play off each other and who can bring a balance to the predicaments that come their way. The best of the best in this department is Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. Coming in a close second is Dead Heat, a film that not only has action and comedy, but one that adds horror in the form of the undead.
If Dan O’ Bannon directed Beverly Hills Cop it would look something like Mark Goldblatt’s directorial debut. Hardcore horror fans pushed aside the lighter side of cinema in the latter half of the 80′s, and in the wake of such arrogance pictures like Dead Heat were left out in the cold. I take movies for their face value,...
