Reba McEntire recruited budding country star Post Malone to pay tribute to Dickey Betts at the 2024 ACM Awards. The guitarist and a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band died last month at 80.
Malone had just wrapped a performance of his first proper country single, “I Had Some Help,” at the show when host McEntire joined him onstage. After coyly revealing he was a bit nervous, Malone was invited by McEntire to pay tribute to Betts with a take on the Allman Brothers Band’s 1973 hit “Ramblin’ Man.” The pair...

At A Down-home Eatery near his waterfront home on Florida’s west coast in 2017, Dickey Betts, stout and white-haired but still evoking his youthful intensity, was asked about his imposing reputation. “People are a little bit standoffish because they think if they say something wrong, I’ll be aggressive or something with them,” he told Rolling Stone, adding with his drawl, “But I’m not like that at all. Unless you start saying shit that’s really demeaning, and then I won’t hesitate to …” Betts didn’t finish the sentence,...

Movies or life stories that are transformed into Broadway musicals always take a degree of liberties with their source material. Sometimes they’re egregious (Hey, Cher musical people, Gregg Allman didn’t sing “Ramblin’ Man” — Dickey Betts did!); other times they may be an improvement. The latter is sometimes the case in Back to the Future: The Musical, which opened last week and time-travels the 1985 blockbuster starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly onto the 2023 Broadway stage. Beloved artifacts like Marty’s down vest, Doc Brown’s souped-up DeLorean, and...

Devon Allman and Duane Betts will honor the music their fathers made in The Allman Brothers Band with a tour of the US dubbed the “Allman Betts Family Revival.”
Devon, son of Gregg, and Duane, son of Dickey, will be joined by Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, and Cody Dickenson (North Mississippi Allstars); Jimmy Hall; Jackie Greene; Larry McCray; Alex Orbison; and Ally Venable on the tour, which will feature one set of songs written by Gregg Allman and one set of songs written by Dickey Betts. Additionally, The Allman Betts Band will include Tal Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck), while select dates will include special guests like Sierra Hull and G. Love.
Originally called the “Allman Family Revival,” Devon Allman hosted the first tribute concert in 2017 to mark what would have been Gregg’s 70th birthday (he passed away earlier that year). Since then, the show has transformed into a traveling tour.

That moldy-peaches cliché “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” has rarely applied to anyone as much as Buddy Guy. As his former protégé Joe Bonamassa says in The Torch, a new doc about Guy, the now-85-year-old blues guitarist and singer is “the last man standing.” He really is: Guy is one of the few still-breathing blues veterans who can boast that he played behind Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, and wowed Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones when they were all twentysomething Brits learning the genre.

Famed keyboard player Chuck Leavell is — as a native Georgian — all about living amid the moss, even if the group he’s most associated with, the Rolling Stones, are by definition averse to it. A new documentary opening this weekend, “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man,” charts his double life, as one of the most renowned session musicians and touring sidemen in rock ‘n’ roll on one hand, and a celebrated environmentalist with a fixation on Southern forestry on the other.
The film, a three-year labor of love for director Allen Farst, nabbed dozens of the stars the keyboard player has worked with for interviews, including all four current Rolling Stones (Leavell has been their touring musical director since the 1980s), Dickey Betts (that’s Leavell’s work you hear on the Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica”), Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, John Mayer, Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, Bonnie Raitt and others.

The annual pilgrimage to the Beacon Theatre became a winter event that my friends and I relished each and every March, something to brighten up the dull blues of winter. The Allman Brothers Band were more than just a "jam" band. And while they defined the Southern Rock ethos and kick-started the whole jam band movement, they were more than that. Yes, they were improvisational monsters, but they also wrote and played highly melodic music, music that stands the test of time; and they owned the covers they performed as well. Only The Grateful Dead could rival them as a live act with staying power, albeit cast in a different Americana psychedlic haze.
Yes, they had weathered the storm of plenty of internal band drama during the '70s, '80s and most of the '90s. They lost their lead guitarist guru Brother Duane Allman in a motorcycle accident...

Savannah, Ga – He survived a life of excess, musical triumph and celebrity coupling. Rocker Gregg Allman, one of the founding members of The Allman Brothers Band, died at his home in Georgia on May 27th, 2016. The influential innovator of the Southern rock sound and for a brief period, the husband of Cher, was 69 years old.
Gregory Lenoir Allman was born in Nashville, the second boy in his family after his brother Duane. He bought his first guitar after his family moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, and graduated from high school there in 1965, just as the British rock invasion in America was exploding. He and brother Duane formed a band called The Escorts, but recorded their first album for Liberty Records in 1967 and called themselves Hour Glass. After one more album, that group disbanded.

Butch was a founding member of the group and just passed away at the age of 69 at his home in West Palm Beach. The cause of his death is still unknown. In a statement released Wednesday, Gregg Allman mourned the loss of his longtime friend and partner. “I’m heartbroken. I’ve lost another brother and it hurts beyond words. Butch and I knew each other since we were teenagers and we

Chicago – Gregg Allman has seen his share of rock and roll sorrow. As an integral part of The Allman Brothers Band, he oversaw the hits – “At Fillmore East” is considered one of the best rock albums ever – and tragedy. Shortly after that album was release in 1971, his brother Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. The ups and downs from there is chronicled in Gregg Allman’s new book, “My Cross to Bear.”
The Allman Brothers Band was formed in Macon, Georgia, with the brothers Duane and Gregg at the helm, supported by Dickey Betts, among other personnel over the years. The band did carry on after Duane’s death, releasing “Eat a Peach” the next year, with the classic songs “Blue Sky,” “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” and “Melissa.”

Dickey Betts -- the legendary guitarist who had a bitter divorce from the Allman Brothers Band in 2000 -- didn't like what the band's drummer, Butch Trucks, said recently about the late Duane Allman. Trucks told Relix magazine that Allman reacted badly when he saw Led Zeppelin for the first time with Robert Plant prancing about the stage in velvet pants. "We were all looking at each other, [like] 'What the [bleep] is this?' . . . Duane got up and said, 'I'm...
