Amid the goings on in the Hamptons — summer 2023 edition — Gwyneth Paltrow brought Italy to Amagansett with the first-ever Gucci/Goop collaboration, while Andy Cohen hung everywhere from Ed Sheeran’s performance at Stephen Talkhouse to Jimmy Fallon’s house to the ocean. While Michael Rubin’s Fourth of July white party is undoubtedly the biggest private affair of the summer season, the action along the 37-mile stretch from Southampton to Montauk, beckoning with restaurants, shops, art galleries and museums, rages on long after you’ve retired all the summer whites in your wardrobe.

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

If you don't rewatch "Dirty Dancing" every time it's on Bravo (like I do), your memories of the film might be a bit hazy. Everyone remembers Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze's crackling chemistry and incredibly romantic dancing - and, of course, the famous line "No one puts Baby in a corner." But you might have forgotten that the story's inciting incident involves an unplanned pregnancy, an illegal abortion, and a poignant message about the importance of reproductive rights.
The story opens in the summer of 1963. Grey plays Baby, the eldest daughter of Dr. Jake and Marjorie Houseman (Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop). Her family is spending the summer at the Kellerman's resort in the Catskills in upstate New York, and Baby feels a bit like an outsider among the other guests - who are mostly older - and among the Ivy League waitstaff, who flirt with all the guests' daughters.

Dirty Dancing is one of the best-known and successful movies of all time. Released in 1987, this popular romantic drama dance film starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. It was written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino. When this film was made, it was a low-budget film being created by a new studio and had few major stars. For these reasons, it was initially predicted to be a flop at the box office. Nobody realized just how successful this film would become with one generation after the next falling in love with the stars, the storyline, and the

There aren't many movie references that people from multiple generations are quick to get. But if you say, "Nobody puts baby in a corner" to anyone in the 18 to 80 range, there's a good chance you'll be met with a knowing smirk. That's probably because while Dirty Dancing puts Johnny Castle and Baby Houseman's timeless romance front and center, it also has political undertones and societal themes that resonate with every era. It was 30 years ago today that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey's sleeper hit opened in theaters. Writer Eleanor Bergstein, who based the movie in part on her own experience as a teenage Mambo queen, knew that Swayze and Grey brought something special to their roles...

The original 1987 Dirty Dancing is a movie that worked against all odds. Eighties sensibility (and hairstyles and theme song) shoehorned into a Sixties nostalgia piece, a miniscule budget, a cast of unknowns, and a troubled production – not to mention a heroine named … Baby. And yet it positively crackled, thanks to Eleanor Bergstein's deeply personal script, crazy chemistry between leads Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, and the ethereal gyrations of the late, great Swayze.

In August, Dirty Dancing will celebrate 30 years since it first captivated audiences with its timeless tale, and Et is digging up some facts about the film that even hardcore fans might not know.
Watch: Abigail Breslin Is 'Stoked' About 'Dirty Dancing' Remake, Hopes to Do It Justice
1. Numerous pairings were considered to play the leads. Today, it's hard to imagine anyone besides Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the starring roles, but surprisingly, they weren't the first choice. The role of Johnny Castle was originally supposed to go to Val Kilmer, but he turned it down. Meanwhile, Grey could have lost the role of Baby Houseman to Sarah Jessica Parker or Sharon Stone, who both reportedly tried out for the part.
2. Some scenes in the movie were made up on the spot. "Tons of things were improvised," the late Swayze said in a featurette for the movie. "When I'm teaching Jennifer and I'm getting frustrated, trying to get...

The lessons we learned from 80s movies are dissected by Hadley Freeman in her new book. Here's our review...
One of my favourite movie websites is The Shiznit. If you've never had the pleasure, do check it out. What I like about it is it's a site that has a habit of asking the question I wanted to ask, but in about half the word count. Were he around today, I'm quietly confident that George Orwell would follow The Shiznit on Twitter.
The reason I bring the site up here - and thus prove my point about my own wordiness - is a question they asked Edgar Wright when on the junket trail for The World's End. For they cut straight to the nub of it: what's the film about, and then, what's it really about?

It was the summer of 1987, when Patrick Swayze was a pin-up and no one imagined dance shows would be on prime-time TV. On the 25th anniversary of the film's release, do you still have hungry eyes for it?
It was 25 years ago this week that Dirty Dancing's Johnny Castle strutted his way into moviegoers' hearts. Patrick Swayze's performance as the dancer who takes the infatuated Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) under his wing secured his status as one of the most lusted-after pin-ups of the 1980s.
Thanks to a combination of Swayze and Grey's leading roles, a great supporting cast, 1960s nostalgia, that soundtrack and Eleanor Bergstein's deft screenwriting, the film was a huge box-office hit, earning back more than 35 times its paltry budget of $6m.

The soundtrack may have won numerous awards, but the film itself has never been a critical darling.

It was August 21 when Dirty Dancing made its way into theaters. That was the summer of 1987, when everybody called Jennifer Grey Baby, and it didn't occur to her to mind. With a budget of $6 million, the film danced its way into the hearts of many a movie-goer, becoming one of the classic romantic films of the decade and a dance-focused love story that many dance movies that followed would likely aspire to be Written by Eleanor Bergstein and dirtied by Emile Ardolino, Dirty Dancing stars with a girl. A college-bound teenager living in the early '60s, who's on the verge of adulthood and ripe to fall in love as she travels to Kellermans, a Catskills resort. Jennifer Grey's Frances "Baby" Houseman is introduced to us as a sweet Daddy's girl, with good grades and an optimistic outlook on the world. "Our Baby's gonna change the world," her father...

In the 1980s, Linda Gottlieb, an East Coast producer for MGM Studios, had lunch in New York City with writer Eleanor Bergstein, who had an idea for a movie about two sisters who are dancers, based in the Catskills.
“I said, ‘Well what’s the story?' And she said, ‘I don’t really have a story, but it should involve Latin dancing…’” Gottlieb recalled. “So I switched the subject and said, ‘Tell me about yourself.’ She said, ‘I grew up in Brooklyn, my father was a doctor, I was one of those kids who used to go across the tracks to go dirty dancing.’
“I said, ‘That’s a million-dollar title! Now we’ll figure out the story.’ We invented Johnny Castle at lunch.”

Admit it: You've seen "Dirty Dancing" more times than you'd care to admit. You're drawn in by its blend of music, dance, nostalgia, and romance between macho-yet-tender Johnny (Patrick Swayze) and awkward-yet-brave Baby (Jennifer Grey) every time it's on TV. Which is often: it seems to have been running on endless loop since its release 25 years ago, on August 21, 1987. Still, as much as you love "Dirty Dancing," you may not realize how often the production skirted disaster, from almost not being made at all, to almost not casting Swayze, to almost cutting a key subplot to please a squeamish potential corporate sponsor, to its catastrophic test screenings that almost led the film's backers to let the film go unreleased and write it off as a bad investment. How did all that trauma lead to moviegoers having the time of their lives? Read on. 1. Writer/producer Eleanor Bergstein based the story on her own childhood.

Chicago – The generation raised on movies of the ’80s is now the one that buys the most Blu-rays. And so it makes sense that more and more of the films of our youth are hitting the format. Again. And again. Lionsgate has turned releasing and re-releasing “Dirty Dancing” into an art form (and would never pass up the 25th anniversary without another re-release). And Warner Bros. has finally given both “Gremlins” and “Gremlins 2” an HD polish although one wishes they had given more care and love to Joe Dante’s gems. Oh yeah, you can also now own “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” on Blu-ray if there’s anyone out there who considers that valuable information.
It may say something about the war of the sexes but I imagine more men would choose the “Gremlins” 2-pack and more women would lean toward the “Dirty Dancing” 2-film collection on the new releases shelf.

Earlier this month there was an unfortunate fire at the Catskills condiminium complex that inspired the resort featured in the movie Dirty Dancing. It wasn't filmed at this location, but it was that setting -- the old-school family resorts of the Catskills -- that inspired screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein to pen Dirty Dancing. When it came time to shoot the film, production moved to two different locations: Mountain Lake in Virginia is where all the exteriors of Kellerman's resort were filmed, as well as the scenes featuring the small cottages the staff were staying in. Meanwhile, the lake scene was shot in North Carolina at Lake Lure. While combing through the story of the fire, though, we learned that Mountain Lake currently hosts something called Dirty Dancing...

A bunch of brave firemen had the time of their life putting out a massive blaze that took down a piece of very cherished movie history.
MSNBC reports that over 43 fire companies and 300 firefighters had to rally together to douse the flames that devoured the Catskills condominium complex formerly known as Brown's Hotel, which inspired the affluent resort Kellerman's in "Dirty Dancing," the favorite movie of nearly every member of the female gender.
While no one was killed or injured in what is being called the "largest fire in Catskills history," many residents lost their homes and belongings, as well as the fantasy that Patrick Swayze would someday lift them up in the air in a dancehall. This is the latest in a series of tragedies to befall the legacy of the film, after Swayze's death and Jennifer Grey's nose job.

Everett Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in “Dirty Dancing” (1987)
It’s easy to find parallels between 1987’s “Dirty Dancing” and 1991’s “Thelma and Louise,” which recently screened before wildly enthusiastic downtown New York City audiences (the screenings were hosted by the blog Jezebel and 92YTribeca respectively).
Both are modern classics, infinitely quotable, especially beloved by women. Both were shepherded to the big screen by tenacious screenwriters, Eleanor Bergstein and Calli Khouri, which became popular beyond expectations. Each film tackles a difficult subject,...

Lionsgate has hired Kenny Ortega, the man behind musical hit "High School Musical", to direct a big-screen remake of "Dirty Dancing". Ortega himself was a choreographer of the original 1987 movie.
"The opportunity to direct 'Dirty Dancing' is like returning home for me," Ortega said on being attached to work on the upcoming film. He added, "Growing up in the 60's on the dance floor helped define me as a person and as an artist."
The helmer of Michael Jackson's "This Is It" also revealed his plan for the remake. He said, "I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring 'Dirty Dancing' to the screen for a new generation."
"Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him," the director of "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" added.

One could just as easily write a negative review as a positive one of Dirty Dancing without even making points that contradict one another. Dancing is a film so ridiculous, so self-assured, so enraptured in a time period that looks like the 1960s but plays like a cross between 1910 and 1987 that you could certainly feel free to deride it for all of its leaps of logic and flagrant cloying, but after a while, you kind of have to wonder what the point would be. Seen from 23 years hindsight, Dancing is certainly one of the films most emblematic of the late 1980s, possessing all of the guilt-free (or is it shameless?) nostalgia and pop musical escapism that the decade has come to represent. But at the same time, the benefit of history has revealed the film to have made just enough interesting and unique creative decisions to justify the strong feelings...

Chicago – How does one review a lavish “Keepsake Edition” of a beloved hit? Does it matter what the critic thinks of the movie itself? It’s not like anyone out there will be buying a gift set such as this having not even seen the film, so the opinion of a potential buyer is pretty much set in stone. With that in mind, if you love “Dirty Dancing” as so many do, it’s hard to think of anything missing from Lionsgate’s new “Limited Keepsake Edition”.

All films buffs have guilty pleasures. You know, those movies that high-minded cineastes love to turn their noses up at, especially critics for The New York Times, people with MFAs in some sort of film-related field, or just plain snobs who refuse to acknowledge anything released on celluloid that doesn’t have English subtitles and at least one reference to death, either as a character or a metaphor (and oftentimes both). Patrick Swayze was the undisputed King of the Guilty Pleasure. From his screen debut in Skatetown, USA in 1979, to his final appearance on television’s "The Beast" as a take-no-prisoners cop, Swayze was an unapologetic good ol’ boy who happened to be a classically-trained dancer, student of martial arts and Eastern philosophy, and possessor of an Iq that was nothing to sneeze at. In fact, he closely resembled Dalton, his character in...

BERLIN -- Budding filmmakers and up-and-coming stars gathered Sunday as two of the biggest events at the Berlin International Film Festival kicked off. Filmmakers at the second Berlin Talent Campus were given an inspirational talk by retired producer and one-time studio boss David Puttnam, part of a series of forums and workshops running in parallel to the festival. Puttnam made an impassioned plea for responsible filmmaking that eschews the temptation to simplify subjects for commercial expediency. "The most important role of the filmmaker is to help explain the complexities and ambiguities of real life," he said, to enthusiastic applause from the audience of several hundred. Puttnam subsequently took part in a round-table discussion giving insights into filmmaking chaired by writer-producer Eleanor Bergstein, along with writer-director Anthony Minghella -- in Berlin with opening film Cold Mountain -- sound and picture editor Walter Murch, and French actor Guillaume Depardieu.
BERLIN -- Film composers Zbigniew Preisner (Three Colors: Blue/White/Red) and David Holmes (Ocean's Eleven) have signed on as hosts of this year's Berlinale Talent Campus, the mini-film school event that runs concurrent with the Berlin International Film Festival, organizers said Friday. Preisner, who was twice nominated for a Golden Globe for his scores to Three Colors: Blue and At Play in the Fields of The Lord, was awarded a special Berlin Silver Bear for outstanding single achievement in 1997 for his music to Soren Kragh-Jacobsen's The Island on Bird Street. In addition to his work on Ocean's Eleven and the upcoming sequel Ocean's Twelve, Holmes composed the score for Gregor Jordan's controversial Buffalo Soldiers, which was shot almost entirely in Germany. Talent Campus organizers on Friday also announced they have selected 520 young filmmakers from 84 countries to attend this year's event. The group was chosen from more than 3600 applications. The theme of this year's Talent Campus is film sound and music. In addition to Holmes and Preisner, other hosts include director Anthony Minghella, sound and film editor Walter Murch, screenwriter/producer Eleanor Bergstein and directors Nicolas Philibert, Alan Parker and Wim Wenders.
