Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton will star in the thriller The Retreat, about a husband and wife who rent a remote island cottage while trying to repair their marriage. One day they find a biohazard-suited soldier washed up on the beach, who warns them that everybody on the mainland has been killed by an airborne virus. In the movie, Cillian Murphy will look incredibly creepy; women will inexplicably be turned on by that. (Deadline)
Studio insiders say that Damon Lindeloff ("Lost") will be rewriting Ridley Scott's Alien prequel. Great: The twist in the end, I bet, is that it's not a prequel; it was a sequel all along. Damn you, Lindeloff! (Deadline)

In Arthur he gets to play Batman for a spell, complete with those ire-inspiring nipples, rippling muscles, and a pimped out Batmobile. But now Russell Brand is looking for a different type of action -- a role where the thrills are front and center. He wants a story replete with history, action, and adventure. He yearns to play a mercenary of the early renaissance -- a sword that served the Pope.
Forget Sarah Marshall, weird music videos, and dashes for the Greek. Prepare yourselves, because Brand is going to play a fourteenth century hero -- Sir John Hawkwood.

Comedy is an ever-changing animal, and thus, so are the faces of those who bring laughs into our lives. Two of the most popular recent additions to comedy in the past five years have each landed a new project to add to their future slate. Deadline has the scoop on both stories. The first sees Russell Brand (Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) signing for an action comedy at 20th Century Fox called Hawkwood. The second has the recently very popular Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) attached to a new spec script sale for a comedy called Reply All, which was purchased by DreamWorks. Details on both projects below! Fox's Hawkwood comes from writer Jared Stern and is inspired by the real-life adventures of swashbuckling figure John Hawkwood, a morally challenged but gifted swordsman paid to lead European armies during the Renaissance wars. Apparently Brand simply had to mention...

Russell Brand is in negotiations to play real-life swashbuckler John Hawkwood in the action comedy "Hawkwood" for 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment reports Deadline.
Hawkwood was a 14th century European mercenary who was skilled with blade, but rather challenged in terms of morality. His services were used to help lead various European armies during the Renaissance wars.
Jared Stern will write the script. Brand, Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark will produce.

Russell Brand is negotiating to play real-life swashbuckler John Hawkwood in the big-screen action comedy Hawkwood, Deadline reports. (EW’s request for comment has yet to be returned.) Described as “a morally challenged but gifted swordsman,” Hawkwood was a 14th century European mercenary, a sword for hire. I’m torn: It seems like an interesting character Brand could have real fun with… but won’t we all be comparing his take to Johnny Depp’s Oscar-nominated turn as Capt. Jack Sparrow, even if he’s land-bound? Then again, Brand is currently shooting a remake of Arthur, so he must like...

Russell Brand has built a career off playing pretty much one character, a British lothario who either has a drinking problem (Get Him to the Greek, the upcoming Arthur) or is recently on the wagon (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), and who very much resembles the famously formerly addicted Brand himself. The time for him to branch out was going to come eventually, but who would have though it would be an attempt to become a modern-day Errol Flynn? According to Deadline, Brand is looking to play a very Flynn-esque hero in Hawkwood, an action comedy about real-life swashbuckler John Hawkwood, who "led various European armies during the Renaissance wars." I'd been under the impression that the Renaissance was a time of general peace and artistic development in Europe, but I suppose there's never really a moment when one section of planet Earth isn't beating up another. Jared Stern is doing the...

Here's a pretty perfect bit of casting. Russell Brand is going to star in "Hawkwood," an action/comedy about real-life 14th century mercenary John Hawkwood. You know how Brand is frequently compared with or considered to be a real-life version of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow character from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies? Well "Hawkwood" will give him a chance to try that role on for real.
The title character is a swashbuckling rogue, which is sort of how I envision Brand in his day-to-day life. Maybe without the sword. Deadline reports that he'll produce "Hawkwood" with Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Nicky Weinstock. No director has been announced, but Jared Stern will write the script. Stern recently did some work on the script for the "Arthur" remake, featuring Brand in the starring role made famous Dudley Moore. With no script written and many of the players still to be maneuvered into place,...

July 29, 2010: English comedy actor Russell Brand may be seen playing a morally challenged but talented legendary 15th century swordsman John Hawkwood. The actor is in talks with 20th Century Fox.

Despite really only playing the same character in two movies and doing a memorable hosting job at the MTV Something Awards, Russell Brand’s comedic star is rising. Currently filming a remake of Arthur, Brand’s next project will be something a bit more unusual. It’s a comedic telling of the life of famous (among historians at least) mercenary John Hawkwood, who lead a number of different European armies in the 1400s, including France and Italy. The script sets...

Say what you like about him, the man is doing well for himself. Russell Brand - not so long ago a villain in the British Press for a certain Sachsgate incident - is now the darling of Hollywood, and according to Deadline, he has just persuaded Fox to make another film for him, called Hawkwood.
Currently involved in a re-make of Arthur and hot on the heels of the hilarious Get Him to the Greek, Brand pitched the idea to the company, who promptly hired Jared Stern to write the script.
John Hawkwood was a mercenary soldier who was hired to lead several European armies in the 1400's including Italy and France. He also - and this is where Brand fits the role perfectly - had few morals, and was never far from controversy and debauchery.
So, what do you think, does a movie about a marauding mercenary have potential?...

Russell Brand is being lined up to play the lead role in action-comedy movie 'Hawkwood'. Share Dickensian dandy Rusell Brand already seems like he’s wandered in from a bygone age, so who better to star as 14th Century swashbuckler John Hawkwood? That’s right, nobody. A notoriously flamboyant mercenary, Hawkwood’s tale struck a chord with Brand, who apparently took the idea to Nicky Weinstock (Fox’s head of comedy) personally. Deadline reports that Weinberg loved the idea, and has hired Jared Stern (who rewrote Brand’s upcoming comedy Arthur) to knock up a script. Hawkwood was a highly sought after...

Must not make “pork swordsman” joke… Must not make “pork swordsman” joke…” Oh! Hello! So Russell Brand is making the most of his current movie popularity and, while he’s still busy filming the Arthur remake, has set up another possible comedy project with Hawkwood. If the film, which is being set up at 20th Century Fox, goes ahead, it’ll blend in action with Brand’s usual comedy stylings to chronicle the adventures of a real-life swashbuckler from Renaissance times.John Hawkwood, a talented blade-swinger with loose morals and a mercenary attitude, was paid to lead a number of different European armies in the 1400s, serving under several banners including those of both Italy and France.Brand brought the idea to Fox comedy head Nicky Weinstock, who then hired Jared Stern (one of no doubt several script doctors on Arthur) to start bashing out a screenplay with Brand’s particular style in mind.

Exclusive: While he’s right now playing a lovable drunk in the Arthur reboot after portraying that drunken rock star in Get Him To The Greek, Russell Brand is finally getting the chance to play an old-time hero. Brand is the catalyst for Hawkwood, an action comedy that's been acquired by 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment. Jared Stern will write the script. Brand's deal is being negotiated by Wme, but he'll play the title role in an action-comedy that follows the adventures of a real-life swashbuckling figure, John Hawkwood. A morally challenged but gifted swordsman, Hawkwood was paid to lead various European armies during the Renaissance wars. Brand will produce with Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark, and Nicky Weinstock will be executive producer. Brand heard about the historical sword for hire, and mentioned Hawkwood to Peter Chernin's head of comedy Nicky Weinstock. While he was Judd Apatow's partner,...
