Dustin Hoffman knew how to reach the leader of the Free World.
During production on the political satire “Wag the Dog,” Hoffman convinced then-President Bill Clinton to allow actors to film outside the White House gates. In true “Bowfinger” fashion, Hoffman allegedly staged a scene in front of White House security guards to make it seem like the actors were exiting the building.
“Dustin, at some point or another, talked the guards at the White House into opening the front gate so that it would look like our actors were walking out,” production designer Wynn Thomas told Vanity Fair as part of the film’s 25th anniversary. “Initially they were walking along in front of the White House.”
Hoffman’s hairstylist Michael White recalled Hoffman taking credit for the “Wag the Dog” production access due to his friendliness with President Clinton.

A great cast wasted in Salvation Boulevard, a misguided and dreary excuse for a comedy that Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connely, Marisa Tomei, and Ed Harris all somehow signed up for. Did these fine actors even read the script or was the chance to goof on the hypocrisy of religious evangelicals too good to resist? Hell House was director George Ratliff’s 2001 documentary about a Texas church’s Halloween spook house that featured, instead of ghosts and goblins, suicide, date rape, incest, and botched abortions. For his narrative feature debut, Ratliff again targets Christians, a broad subject but a tricky one for satire especially when painted with an equally broad brush, and he fails miserably. Those anticipating a biting and funny satire of the God business need to look elsewhere.

Here.s a change of pace. A filmmaker has angered a large religious group and is facing legal repercussions and it isn.t Kevin Smith! Instead, the Church of God reportedly is going after Sony Pictures, IFC Films and Comcast for copyright infringement because an image that looks identical to the church.s trademarked cross logo is being used in George Ratliff.s recently released comedy Salvation Boulevard. The film, which opened in limited release on July 15, stars Greg Kinnear as a former Grateful Dead fanatic who catches his evangelical preacher (Pierce Brosnan) in a compromising situation. Based on Larry Beinhart.s book of the same title, the movie co-stars Ed Harris, Marisa Tomei and Jennifer Connelly. Silly, predictable and as funny as the funny business of religion can be. Emerging director George Ratliff pulls one out of the hat with two great performances by Greg Kinnear and Pierce Brosnan. In this hilarious poke at major organized religion the streets of America are paved with more gold than heaven itself, for the enterprising evangelical. The trick is to convert the magic of the pulpit into the magic of the profit and these protagonists may not be quite up to the challenge. The screenplay is based on the book by Larry Beinhart, the man responsible for the novel .American Hero.. Although you may not remember the book, it spawned the great political satire .Wag the Dog. starring Dustin...

George Ratliff’s flip adaptation of Larry Beinhart’s mystery-thriller Salvation Boulevard is a misfire of the first order, starting with the way writer-director Ratliff and co-writer Doug Max Stone turn what could’ve been a provocative, gripping story into an over-the-top yukfest. Framed as a “satire” set in the milieu of upper-middle-class suburban mega-churches, Salvation Boulevard doesn’t seem to have any higher aspiration than illustrating how religious people can be hypocrites. (Gosh, who knew?) Greg Kinnear stars as a born-again Christian and former Deadhead whose faith is tested when he witnesses his pastor, Pierce Brosnan, “accidentally” shooting famous ...

After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.
Here is the full list:

Following yesterday's announcement of the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the second part of their lineup, which includes the more starry-eyed Premieres section, the best-of-fests Spotlight section, the sure-to-be-culty Park City at Midnight section, the low-budget Next section, and the more experimental New Frontier section (an extension of New Frontier Program, the collection of video art installations which has already been noted here for playing James Franco's dramatic multimedia examination of "Three's Company.")
In addition to the return of filmmakers like "Chuck & Buck"'s Miguel Arteta, "Clockwatchers" director Jill Sprecher, Kevin Smith and "The Station Agent"'s Thomas McCarthy to Park City, the festival will also welcome less frequent or first-time Sundance attendees such as Hollywood types Al Pacino ("Son of No One") and Tobey Maguire ("The Details") and mumblecore alums Joe Swanberg ("Uncle Kent," which announced it's been...

Yesterday, when the 2011 Sundance Film Festival announced its full in competition line-up, a few eyebrows were raised about the somewhat surprising lack of star power in the year’s crop of films. Well, yesterday, we saw the full list of films in-competition; today, we get to see those titles that have been selected for Sundance 2011′s out-of-competition lineup.
And as I said with yesterday’s post, I’ll be going over the complete list, highlighting titles that need to be, taking into consideration this blog’s specific interests. The only title that immediately stands out is Brit John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses, which MsWOO positively reviewed, after seeing it at the London Film Festival in October. Read her review Here.
But look for future posts profiling any other titles I deem worthy. I’ve applied for press credentials to attend next year’s festival. I won’t know until the 23rd of this month, whether I’ve been granted press access or not. If I am, I will attend the festival; and if I’m not, well, I probably won’t.

Well, if the Competition titles at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival don't generate any early year Oscar buzz, I think it's safe to say the Out of Competition titles will. Several films that have already been seen and positively reviewed can be found in the fest's Spotlight Line-Up along with a batch of anticipated hopefuls in the Premiere Section.

#58. Salvation Boulevard - George Ratliff I distinctly remember George Ratliff's Joshua being a well-received buyer title in Park City. Currently in post-production, Ratliff might make it two for two with what appears to be a high value title for pick-up. Salvation Boulevard which packs several Sundance alumni in Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Marisa Tomei, Isabelle Fuhrman, Greg Kinnear and Jim Gaffigan, should be in the cards for the fest, that's if Sundance don't have a problem with the anti-church wave of films where, this, Farmiga's Higher Ground and Kevin Smith's film might form an unlikely thematic trio. Working as both a comedy and thriller, written by Ratliff and Douglas Stone and based on the novel by Larry Beinhart, this starts with a dead professor. A suspect—who has confessed—is in custody. But nothing is what it seems. The dead man is an atheist, the accused an Islamic foreign student,...

When news hit, Larry Beinhart's (American Hero, which became Wag the Dog) novel was described as "a mystery about a private investigator hired to find the killer of a college professor that becomes an exploration of religious faith when it turns out that the professor was an atheist, the P.I. is a born-again Christian, the main suspect is a Muslim student, and the defense attorney is a Jew." That's pretty much what's outlined in the book's summary, but all recent reports describe the tale much more simply, stating that the film "centers on a former Deadhead turned born-again...

Cruz is Blackbeard's Daughter in Pirates 4: Penelope Cruz will apparently be playing the pirate Blackbeard's daughter in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with Ian McShane playing Blackbeard. It's also being reported Disney was adamant about casting females in the film that have not been artificially enhanced. According to a casting memo actresses auditioning for the film "must have real breasts. Do not submit if you have implants." It also says if there was any doubt as to the authenticity of the ladies they would have to undergo a jiggle test and if not enough was moving you were out. Bouncier the better is the motto it appears . [MTV and Times of London]

Another full casting couch again this week. So much casting news to report ranging from 3 British dudes to Alicia Silverstone actually getting a role.
First up, Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Warner Bros. has purchased an untitled pitch from William and Scott Bindley, which has Russell Brand attached to star. Brand will portray an eccentric soccer superstar who gets arrested in football-happy West Texas. The judge sentences him to a unique form of community service: he has to coach the pathetic high school soccer team…Lame!
Our boy Colin Firth is always snagging roles these days and even has an Academy Award nomination this year. Now he is teaming up with fellow Brit, Matthew McFayden in The Promised Land. The movie is a crime thriller set in British-ruled Palestine towards the end of World War II.
Now, this new is sort of weird to report only because I think...

The indie comedy/thriller Salvation Boulevard got an interesting trio of actors today: Pierce Brosnan, Ed Harris and Jim Gaffigan have all joined the cast. What's the story? The film "is set in the world of mega-churches in which a former Deadhead-turned-born again-Christian finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor." Having lived in a couple areas spotted by mega-churches I kinda love this. George Ratliff is directing from a script he co-wrote with Douglas Stone, based on Larry Beinhart's novel Salvation Boulevard. I didn't much like Ratliff's last film, Joshua, but this cast is great and the story sounds like a good time. [Variety] After the break, Susan Sarandon and Jaime King land new roles. Susan Sarandon is looking at the matriarch role in a revival of The Big Valley, an 1870s-set TV western that ran from...

It's not everyday you hear about a comedic thriller going into production, so let's fill that void with Variety's report that Pierce Brosnan, Ed Harris and Jim Gaffigan will star in Salvation Boulevard, an indie comedic thriller set in the world of mega-churches in which a former Deadhead-turned-born again-Christian finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their pastor. And that's the sound of offended zealots scoffing at this blasphemy. Taking the blame will be director George Ratliff (Joshua) who also wrote the screenplay with Wag the Dog writer Larry Beinhart. As much as I'm looking forward to Ed Harris working his comedic chops, and intend to enjoy Brosnan's return to comedy after decent turns in Mars Attacks and The Matador, it's Jim Gaffigan who I'll be most excited to see on screen. Gaffigan has made a bigger ...
