Neither he nor orchestrator
Robert Russell Bennett were Oscar-nominated
for their work on the 1936 film version of "Show Boat", because in
1936, the nomination for music would always go to the studio department head, which neither Bennett nor Baravalle were. If "Show Boat" had been filmed in 1938, when the Academy rules were changed to allow conductors and/or orchestrators to be nominated, it is quite likely that either Baravalle or Bennett would have been nominated for it. Both men also worked on the original 1927 stage production of "Show Boat".
