The Roland Tr-808 drum machine is responsible for some of the most influential music from the 1980s through the present day, from artists as diverse as Phil Collins and Lil Wayne. The new documentary “808” chronicles the story of the drum machine that changed the course of music. Narrated by Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, the film features commentary and interviews from Pharrell Williams, Afrika Bambaataa, Questlove, the Beastie Boys, Damon Albarn and more. It also features a journey to Japan where Roland found Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi reveals the untold reason for the machine’s mysterious early discontinuation just as it was turning up on more hit records than any other drum machine. The DJ Awards in Ibiza just celebrated its 18th edition, and even though DJ Mag holds down the fort when it comes to rankings of all things Edm, fans of dance music’s more sophisticated side might rejoice in some of the former awards ceremony’s selections.
That said, before you tear apart this claim in the comments section (I know you were going to), bear in mind that Hardwell does have not one, but two entries on this list – namely in the International DJ and Progressive House/Electro categories. Oh, and there’s an “Electronica” category, because apparently we’re still in the year 2000.
Aside from that, though, respectable outfits like Carl Cox, Hot Since 82, Luciano, and Solomun grace the other entries, and the “Special Awards” heading features an interesting collection of innovators and organizations behind the curtain.

And we thought that this was a Vice dinner, in the city that gave the word its vim and vigor. But this was, lest we forget, the Munchies party, and at the farm table, plated for 60 on the patio of the Mondrian South Beach, the Vice uniform was in full force: beards, black, and a touch of blasé. There was Arthur Baker, Daniel Arsham, and Manish Vora. Even Munchies producer John Martin joked that looking at food all day can be a rather painful job. The dinner was a labor of love from Carlo Mirarchi, chef of beloved Bushwick outpost Roberta’s. Except every time we went for a helping, there was either none left or we saw the food untouched on another guest’s plate. Hey, you don’t get a Miami beach body from gorging. So we decided to wander. And it didn’t take too long to...

New Order's former member Peter Hook has revealed that he would like David Guetta and Calvin Harris to remix one of the band's classic hits. The group's ex-bassist admitted that it would be a "dream" for the DJs to re-work their 1983 single 'Blue Monday' for its 30th anniversary later this year. "When we went to New York in '81/'82, the disco and electro started to sink in," Hook told The Guardian. "I knew we weren't going to go disco. We were going to offer a white northern take on black disco music - and then we started working with Arthur Baker, who wrote 'Iou'." He (more)...

The Queen Of Versailles + Q&A | Nick Abrahams | Slapstick 2013 | Loco London Comedy Film Festival
The Queen Of Versailles + Q&A, London
Few recent documentaries have summed up the craziness of our times as well as Lauren Greenfield's The Queen Of Versailles. It focused on the wealthy Siegel family and their matriarch Jackie, whose attempts to build one of the largest private homes in America were stalled by the sub-prime meltdown. The film-makers and the Siegels apparently fell out, too. But what happened next? This one-off screening is the chance to find out, with both Greenfield and Jackie Siegel attending the Q&A.
Ritzy Picturehouse, SW2, Wed
Nick Abrahams, London
He recently received an award for his gorgeous Sigur Rós short film (in which Aidan Gillen, pictured, is guided by a talking snail), but Abrahams has been experimenting visually for the coolest bands for decades, including Huggy Bear, Stereolab, Leftfield,...

Revisiting 18 years of pop culture, from Arrested Development to Skins, as well as a little-known show called The Wire
2004: Wardrobe malfunction
Spotted! Grime "Alternatively called 8 bar, sub-low or eski… there's no particular structure, just an average 136+ Bpm, lots of speaker-shattering bass, and tales of girls, guns, drug-dealing and the ultimate crowd-pleaser, 'slewing' – slagging off the competition a la Eminem in 8 Mile." Hattie Collins merks it
Jesus wept "If you're a male flagellation buff out for a night on the town with the girlfriend who hates Jerry Seinfeld and the rest of the children of Israel, I honestly can't think of a better date flick." Joe Queenan spots Mel Gibson's antisemitic streak in The Passion Of The Christ
Sign of the times The iTunes Music Store launches in June. "If one aspect of the iTunes Store might give the serious music fan pause," writes Andrew Mueller, "it is this: the rock'n'roll album,...

In the last couple of years, a spate of films, from Joe Cornish's "Attack The Block" to J.J. Abrams' "Super 8," have named one film as a particular influence: Richard Donner's "The Goonies," the 1985 kids' adventure film that served as part of the 1980s golden age of Amblin, Steven Spielberg's production company. Following a group of working class kids from the 'Goon Docks' of Astoria, Oregon, on one last adventure before their homes are demolished, only to end up on a quest, and pursued by a vicious criminal family, the Fratellis, the film is a rollicking adventure that also had a particular feel for the friendships between kids.
Providing early introductions to people like Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman and Sean Astin, the film's become an enduring family favorite, and as the kids who grew up on it have become directors themselves, its reputation has only grown.

HollywoodLife.com: How did you get started in the music industry?
David Rosner: Back in 1984 I had a terrible accident where I had run down the beach and dove into a wave. You’re 18 years old — you think you’re indestructible. I landed on top of my head and the wave went out.

Part 2: From Davina and Deeley to Joy Orbison
Dance Shows
Are you dancing? Cat Deeley and Davina are asking
In 2010, Cat Deeley and Davina McCall will go head-to-head with their own dance shows: BBC1's So You Think You Can Dance and Sky1's Got To Dance. But which looks better?
Premise Sytycd is an X Factor-style contest to find the UK's best dancer, whereas Got To Dance is an X Factor … oh, hang on, they're identical.
Winner It's a draw.
Promos The Got To Dance promos see Davina McCall recreating famous dance routines dressed in a skimpy leotard that shows off her feminine magnificence like never before. The Sytycd promo is a close-up of Nigel Lythgoe's bulging amphibian face.
Winner Davina.
Host's Sense Of Inhibition Cat Deeley might have polarised Us audiences with her wayward fashion sense, but it seems like Davina actively lobbied to wear that leotard.
