Modern English will release a new LP, 1 2 3 4, on Feb. 23. The release marks the British group’s first new music in eight years and was produced by Mario J. McNulty. They’ve previewed the album with a searing new single, “Not My Leader,” which takes aim at political leaders on both sides of the pond.
“I remember first coming to America in the early-’80s,” singer/guitarist Robbie Grey explained in a statement. “We had Margaret Thatcher and you had Ronald Reagan. And then fast forward to...

Hammer’s attempt at a budget monster romp for 1966 isn’t quite as good as its sister film Plague of the Zombies, but it has fine atmosphere and a couple of worthy grace notes, namely its fine actresses Jennifer Daniel and Jacqueline Pearce. Although the title monster bites some fans the wrong way, it works for this reviewer — it’s every appearance is a surprise, and for me it’s convincingly… reptilian.

Greta Gerwig remembers the "Eureka!" moment.
The 34-year-old actor, an indie-cinema fixture and a co-writer for films like Frances Ha and Mistress America, had been struggling with a screenplay she'd been working on for a while, a story about a young woman coming of age in Northern California. For some reason, she "felt I kept hitting some sort of wall with the movie that I couldn't break through." Then, out of the blue, two lines of dialogue popped into her head.
"I just put everything aside," Gerwig says, "and I...

★★☆☆☆ Having wowed audiences with his last work Li'l Quinquin, Bruno Dumont's much-anticipated seaside comedy Slack Bay arrived in competition at Cannes with some high expectations. Though the farce is occasionally funny, it's as bloated and windy as its comedy policeman Inspector Machin (Didier Després). Dressed like the Thompson Twins, Machin and his assistant Malfoy (Cyril Rigaux) are investigating a series of disappearances in the small seaside community of Slack Bay in Northern France.

The world is all out of whack: multiple Dutch tilts are on display in Voyage sans espoir (1943), an unbelievably glossy poetic realist proto-noir from Christian-Jaque: the film actually begins with railway tracks viewed from the front of a speeding train, upside down, as the camera drunkenly rolls upright and titles come flying towards us, slapping flat across the frame like flies hitting a windshield.
The plot is convoluted but crisp—chance encounters tie together Jean Marais, fleeing his job at a bank to see life and settle in Argentina, with an escaped jailbird of psychopathic demeanor (Paul Bernard) and his girlfriend, the radiant Simone Renant. There's also a likably crooked ship's captain carrying a torch for Renant, a sinister ethnic-type sailor (Ky Duyen), and a pair of hard-drinking but eternally sober detectives who resemble nothing more than the Thompson Twins from Tintin. The French had a nifty way with...

Demi Lovato was all about the cuteness as a guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Monday (Nov. 25) night. It worked for the "X Factor" judge as she talked about Simon Cowell, the old people in her apartment building and the terror that comes from interrupting Barbara Walters.
The entire interview started off on an amusing note when Jimmy Kimmel asked if Demi was trying to imitate the Thompson Twins with her look. The oh-so-young Lovato's response? "Um, I don't know who they are."
Just a band that disappeared from the music scene before you were born, Demi ...
Cuteness kept going when Demi and Jimmy talked about "The View." It was probably a joke when Lovato claimed not to remember Kimmel's recent visit to the show -- when she was a guest co-host. What was not a joke was how difficult Lovato found it to interrupt Barbara Walters in order to ask questions.

Under different circumstances, I might begin by complaining about how The Simpsons is putting a lot of time and effort into making some overly complex title sequences and not investing much time in doing if not original storytelling, at least comedic storytelling. However, it’s pleasure to say that this week, the show had all the bases covered. Episode writer Tim Long kept a pretty tight focus on the main story, a fairly smart and even-handed political satire that trumpets the grand quality of bi-partisanship.

Shortly to be reunited onscreen in The World's End, and with a host of solo TV and film projects in the works, the comic boy-man duo seem to be going from strength to strength
What a pleasure, what a sugar rush, giddy-kipper joy it is to watch Simon Pegg and Nick Frost together in a film by Edgar Wright. I went to see a preview of The World's End, the final part of the Pegg/Frost/Wright "three flavours Cornetto" trilogy, and I laughed and laughed for three-quarters of an hour. Then I stopped, as we were only allowed to see the first 45 minutes of the film, for some reason. Either the special effects people were still cranking out the CGI, or the last hour is Really Bad (not so, according to those who have now seen it).
Anyway, the part I saw zipped by, a slick, high-spirited blast of jokes and small-town action,...

Tuesday was already the traditional album release day in the U.S. by March 31, 1987. Music fans' choices among the new releases that day included Close to the Bone by the Thompson Twins, The Circus by Erasure, and the two albums I refer to in the headline: Prince's Sign o' the Times and Suzanne Vega's Solitude Standing. Both of the latter artists had proven their talent by that point, and these releases were eagerly anticipated.
Sign o' the Times (Warner Bros.) was a double LP (barely under 80 minutes), always a major statement (discounting live doubles). It is to Prince what There's a Riot Goin' On was to Sly & the Family Stone: an album of schizophrenic swings between dire warnings of social disaster, personal darkness and confusion, and seemingly desperate attempts to stave it all off by often-lascivious partying -- and also an artistic peak.

Steven Spielberg first discovered the "Tintin" comics right after "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out and reviewers compared his Indiana Jones to Hergé's classic creation. Ever since, the master director has wanted to bring the intrepid reporter, his faithful dog Snowy, and all the other characters to the screen -- and now he's done so with gusto.
"The Adventures of Tintin" follows our adventure-loving hero as he pieces together the clues to sunken treasure, meets his new friend Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) and foils a dastardly villain bent on revenge. Not only is the spirit of adventure catching, but you'll see three or four of the most incredible action sequences ever put to celluloid. Dr. Jones got nothin' on Tintin.
1. Last of the Haddocks. Next time you're evading armed henchmen, we recommend you deliver key exposition at full volume down an echoey corridor.

Hollywood moviemaker Steven Spielberg has appointed Peter Jackson to direct a sequel to their new 3D blockbuster The Adventures Of Tintin.
The Jurassic Park director took charge of this year's animated action adventure, featuring the voices of Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig and Simon Pegg, and he has previously expressed his desire to follow it up with two more installments, based on the comic books by Belgian artist Herge.
The film was released to rave reviews in Europe in October and went on to debut at the top of the box office in 17 countries, making an estimated $55.8 million (£34.9 million) in its opening weekend.
It is due to open in North America later this month, but its international success has already inspired Spielberg to press ahead with his sequel plans, and he has now confirmed the first Tintin sequel will be Jackson's next project.
Spielberg says, "The Thompson Twins (Tintin characters) have a much bigger role in the next Tintin movie that Peter Jackson is going to direct. It's being written right now and he's directing it after he does The Hobbit and I'll produce it with him as he's produced this with me.
"We have the story and we have the book we're adapting from Herge and we can't wait to get started."
Jackson is currently shooting The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in New Zealand. The first of two parts, titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is due to hit movie theatres next year.

Last night Syfy began their much-anticipated Countdown to Christmas, with holiday-themed episodes of Eureka, Haven and Warehouse 13, a tradition they started last year, and hopefully will continue with other shows and other holidays.
For instance, Valentine's Day with Being Human (abnormal blood moon causes Josh to become deathly infected, and only having sex with Aidan can cure it), and Sanctuary (abnormal abnormal attacks Will, causing him to become deathly infected, and only having sex with Henry can cure it).
That's just an example. They can work out the details later.
Last night's episodes were sweet stocking stuffers for fans of each show, and played on each series' strengths.
Warehouse 13
All of these episodes take place outside of their regular space/time continuims, and that was definitely the case with the Christmas Warehouse 13. When we last saw the show, Steve Jinks was killed to a melancholy version of "Running Up That Hill,...

Today is MTV’s 30th birthday, and the good folks at EW.com have asked me to say a few words. Turn up your computer speakers and listen to our story, won’t you?
As you’re aware, MTV premiered 30 years ago today. As you’re aware if you’re old, MTV took a while to go nationwide. The prevailing wisdom, as I recall it, was that such a thing could never catch on. The idea of a 24-hour music-video channel was tantalizing for the youth of the early ‘80s, and the wait for the cable systems in St. Louis to carry it was excruciating.

I should have been out the door 30 minutes ago so I’m going to have to post this trailer sight unseen but I know so many of our audience are super interested in Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn that it would be a crime if just let this trailer slip.

Simon Pegg stopped by 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' (Weeknights, 12:37Am Et on NBC) to talk about his new movie, 'The Adventures of Tintin.'
To get the look of the original 'Tintin' comic books, director Steven Spielberg shot the movie using motion-capture computer animation.
This meant that Pegg and his B.F.F. Nick Frost -- who play the identical Thompson Twins -- both had to wear really tight-fitting suits. The sight was "not that pretty," according to Pegg.
However, tight suits aside, the most exciting part of the shoot for sci-fi fanatic Pegg was getting to grips with his idol Spielberg and co-star Andy Serkis. Literally. When Spielberg was explaining to Serkis how to rough up Pegg's character he grabbed Pegg and started shaking him around. Then Serkis joined in and started shaking him.

Though he emerged from the ‘90s pop scene, singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik is now probably best known as a Broadway composer, whose rock score to “Spring Awakening” earned two Tony Awards in 2007. Since then he’s been juggling multiple theater projects, but recently carved out time to record an album. Set for release Tuesday, “Covers 80s” is a collection of hits and obscurities by acts such as New Order, Tears for Fears and the Thompson Twins, which Sheik presents in hushed acoustic arrangements.

Steven Spielberg has kept Tintin mostly a curious mystery up until this week, but after a few posters kicked off the marketing campaign yesterday and got many of us genuinely excited – Columbia Pictures have followed up with a teaser trailer citing the movie to be ‘A Motion Picture Event’. i.e. – after all the secrecy it’s getting near the time to sell this baby.
Although I’m no advocate of motion captured technology, the way Spielberg seems to have adopted it here includes a nostalgic feel for the Herge comics but also a classier and more refined and polished look to it than the recent work of Robert Zemeckis. Working alongside Peter Jackson’s extraordinary company Weta Digital who won the Oscar for Avatar, the result looks positively breathtaking….
However and this should be important, the trailer mostly sticks to shooting characters from behind and in and around shadows.

Steven Spielberg is obsessed with "Tintin," making him one of the 14 people in the United States who actually knows what a "Tintin" is.
But in the first teaser trailer for his new animated film "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn," the grandmaster of popcorn cinema makes sure you're just as excited as he is to see the comic book character come to life on the big screen, and he does so by throwing all the punches -- literally.
Based on a series of illustrated books by Belgian artist Herge, the "Tintin" comics follow the titular character (played by Jamie Bell), a young reporter who looks vaguely like the French pop star Le Roux, as he sticks his nose in other peoples' business and solves crimes along the way. It’s a trailer we’ve been anxiously waiting to see. It’s our first proper look at Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures Of Tintin, and you can see it for yourself here…
As someone who spent many hours reading Hergé’s original books as a child, it’s fair to say that I’ve got high hopes for Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming The Adventures Of Tintin. The pedigree’s certainly there, with some fantastic writers in Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, and a cast that includes Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Internet reaction to the first stills from Tintin’s production, which appeared towards the end of last year, was rather mixed, however, and not everyone warmed to the photorealistic CG rendering of one of the twentieth century’s most recognisable comic book characters.
What immediately struck us, in both the film’s stills and posters,...

A few days ago I did not to go to Area 51 and speak to "Paul" screenwriters/actors Nick Frost and Simon Pegg but I did attend the NYC press conference to talk about the film that opens nationwide tomorrow.Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for the comedy adventure "Paul" as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. Here is what they had to say about "Paul."How does 'Paul' compare to some of the other type alien movies that are out?Pegg: I think of all the alien films that have come out recently, and we do seem to be a part of a zeitgeist of alien cinema, I think that Paul is probably the only one who would pass you a joint rather...

Consider it a romantic comedy. With the love interests being thirty year old aliens.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost bring their lifelong love of science fiction to the big screen in the alien new road trip comedy "Paul," creating a fusion genre as they craft an original story with plenty of homages to the past thirty years of alien movies. Shouting out "Et" and "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," the writing/starring pair, along with director Greg Motolla and co-stars Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Hader, Joe Lo Truglio and Seth Rogen, create their own adventure that's part buddy movie and part rewritten alien folklore.
The Huffington Post participated in a private press conference with a number of reporters, Pegg, Frost and Motolla, where all alien talk -- including the hot button issue of eating live birds -- was on the table. Here's the transcript,...

Simon Pegg has explained that Steven Spielberg had to wait for technology to catch up with his vision for Tintin. Pegg stars alongside friend and comedy partner Nick Frost as the Thompson Twins in Spielberg and Peter Jackson's long-in-development adaptation of Hergé's comic strips. Speaking to the Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio, Pegg said: "Steven Spielberg has had the rights to Tintin since 1982 I think. "After he did Raiders [of the Lost Ark] he was doing the European press, and people said 'It's a bit like Tintin isn't it?', and he didn't know what Tintin was, so he investigated, fell in love with it, and he's waited until he's been able to do it like Hergé's drawings, you know - he's waited for technology. For the first time in 1,000 years, I actually tuned in to CBS’ Survivor: Nicaragua. The reasons are completely beyond my control, though I think doctors refer to this disease as “having to much time on one’s hands.” The twist this season were that the teams were divided in an “Olds” and a “Youngs.” Though, by the time the final 3 rolled up, the “Olds” had already gotten in their “Oldsmobile” chauffeured by Gary Oldman back to Old Mountain while listening to “Old Me Now” by the Thompson Twins. The final three came down to Chase, whom you might remember as one of the Southerners chasing down Forrest Gump as a boy; Sash, whose pectoral muscles pulled a Spongebob floppy-arm days into their journey; and Fabio, real name Jud, a sort of ditzy-acting but entirely sweet, sugar-sweet, human being who loves his mother in ways that are simply astounding. I loved Fabio,...

The British Empire magazine is debuting the first-ever images from Peter Jackson's The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn in their print edition, but only made a handful of the images available online. Now, thanks to the French site FilmsActu.com, we've got a look at scans from other images in the film, featuring the Thompson twins played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the thief Silk played by Toby Jones, and Joe Starr's character Barnaby. There's also a nice shot of what appears to be Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) and Tintin himself (Jamie Bell) in the desert, which gives a nice sense of the cartoony, mo-cap visuals of the film. Check out all three below and click to go to FilmsActu, where they have surprisingly high-res versions. I'm still a little skeptical about the film, both because the visuals seem a little off somehow and the...

If you're like me, you've probably been wondering what the big deal is with Tintin and why Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson decided to produce an entire trilogy of films based on this comic strip. It has been said that Tintin has a much bigger following in Europe (the series was created by Belgian artist Georges Rémi), but it still seems like a bit of a risk to commit to three films based on something that is not particularly well-known in North America. Either way, up until now we hadn't really heard or seen anything from the first installment The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, despite the fact that it had finished filming in early 2009. Now this week the first photos from the film have appeared online courtesy of Empire Magazine [1]. The reason we haven't seen anything from the film up until now is because it is...

The first full images for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn have been released. This fully CGI adaptation of the comic strips by Hergé is being directed by Steven Spielberg. Empire has revealed Tintin, his dog Snowy and Captain Haddock as they will appear in next December's animated adventure. The movie stars Jamie Bell (Tintin), Andy Serkis (Captain Haddock) Daniel Craig (Red Rackham) along with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (the Thompson twins). It also features Cary Elwes, Toby Jones, Mackenzie Crook and Daniel Mays. The cover of their magazine (due out November 4) has been specially designed by Weta. The reason for going CG on this film is very simple, according to producer Peter Jackson: "With live action you’re going to have actors pretending to be Captain Haddock...

Updated: First Look At Spielberg And Jackson's 'The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn'
Empire have revealed the first images from Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's 'The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn,' with a specially-Weta-created cover is a riff on the iconic image of Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his dog Snowy picked out by a spotlight as they are running.
Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson also told the magazine what to expect from Tin Tin's cinematic adventure:
“With live action you’re going to have actors pretending to be Captain Haddock and Tintin,” says Peter Jackson. “You’d be casting people to look like them. It’s not really going to feel like the Tintin Hergé drew. It’s going to be somewhat different. With CGI we can bring Hergé’s world to life, keep the stylised caricatured faces, keep everything looking like Hergé’s artwork, but make it photo-real.”

Geek overlord Simon Pegg talks about his new autobiography, as well as chatting about Spaced, Mission: Impossible 4, King Frat, Paul, Edgar Wright, Star Wars and more…
Out now in hardback, Simon Pegg has just released his autobiography, Nerd Do Well. A terrific read, it tells of his early years, his Star Wars obsession, and the foundations of his career.
And he spared us some time to talk about it, and what he's up to...
There's a really lovely footnote in your book which is worth covering first. It said that when you were doing press for Shaun Of The Dead, you dropped in there that you wouldn't want to do something like Mission: Impossible III.
I'm wondering if you want to try the same trick on any other forthcoming movies that you don't-but-do want to get involved with? Indy 5? Die Hard 5?
[Laughs] That was quite a moment of extreme hypocrisy by me!

Piers Morgan used to say of the actor Nicholas Lyndhurst that he may have been incredibly famous – this was back when Lyndhurst was an on-screen ubiquity as Rodney Trotter, as a time-traveller in Goodnight Sweetheart and an occasional cross-dresser in adverts for Smiths – but how much did anybody know about his private life?
There were no nightclub ejections or illicit affairs, to anyone's knowledge, really no Lyndhurst-based muck at all, and Morgan's point was that privacy could be pretty well maintained by the famous if the famous really wanted it. So Just Where Do You Draw The Line?
Here is an interesting question for you: as gay people where do we draw the line when it comes to spending our hard earned dollars on movies, books, plays and or music that in some way might benefit a person or business who doesn't have our best interests at heart?
Eminem, Mel Gibson
This is a question most of us face at some point whether it's deciding if you want to download that new Eminem song that is so great despite his past comments about gay people. Or whether you should shell out ten bucks to see that new Mel Gibson flick your brother wants to see even though Gibson supports the far right wing of the Catholic Church, not to mention the awful and historically inaccurate portrayal of Edward II he gave us in Braveheart, as well as the ugly murder...

Knock, Knock. Who's There? The Closet. you're Still Around? You Better Believe It!
There's been a great deal of discussion on the site over the past couple of weeks about gay celebrities, the closet and what constitutes being "out." And even though we've discussed the issue numerous times before, it seems like it is once again time to revisit the topic. And it's a subject that is as tricky as ever and that can have real consequences for the celebrities involved.
Perez kicked the latest round of debate off when he posted an item about White Collar's Matthew Bomer. Without citing a source or saying how he knew, Perez simply claimed Matt was an out gay man. If true, we were certainly interested in writing about Matt and his show, but as we aren't a gossip site, I wasn't going to simply repeat Perez's claims — for lots of reasons.

Weddings can be so glamorous and exciting, but behind them all there are a lot of perplexing preparations to do. Ever so often the preparation alone takes the excitement away from the big day. As the wedding approaches, tension ofttimes flares high and complication crashes one after another.
And while the intricacies are not a pretty sight to see, when Hollywood plays a part in this messy business, they become much more interesting and entertaining though not less chaotic. For years, filmmakers have brought up distressing issues for soon-to-be-married couple with drama and laughters entailing.
So, what kind of intricacies does Hollywood design to be the problems occurring before the big day? Here are the seven reasons as featured in some wedding movies throughout the recent years.
Complication #1: 1 Bride, 3 Possible Fathers in "Mamma Mia!"
Girls dream of having their father walks them down the aisle when they get married.

British comedy actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been cast as the Thompson Twins in at least one of Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s two Tintin movies.
The duo, who have played alongside each other hilariously in both ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’ will play near-identical twins in the motion capture adventure flick.
From Variety -
The 3-D performance-capture films, based on Georges Remi’s comic books and co-financed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, will center on Tintin’s globetrotting adventures as a fearless reporter. In the books, the Thompson Twins are a pair of incompetent, clumsy detectives who can only be told apart by the shape of their moustaches — Thompson, with a “p,” has a flat moustache, while Thomson, without the “p,” has a flared version.

Comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) have joined the cast of Tintin, the 3-D motion-capture adaptation of George Remi's classic comic. Rather than aging '80s pop icons, these Thompson Twins are a pair of bumbling detectives identical in every way except for the shape of their mustaches.
Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) will play Tintin's sidekick, Captain Haddock. The lead role of Tintin has not yet been cast.

So, Pegg and Frost have been cast as the identical Thompson Twins in Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's Tintin. But they don't look anything alike, which is confusing, right? It doesn't matter. Tintin will be a CGI 3D mo-cap affair, which means that anyone can play anyone. Using that logic, here's who we'd cast in the rest of the roles. Professor Cuthbert Calculus Who is he? Words are, "Tintin" may be made into two films only. This recent speculation arose to the surface after Variety came up with the news that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Paramount Pictures are in talks to co-finance the digital 3-D movie for one film of the trilogy.
In its news, Variety stressed that though deal are being negotiated for the financing part, no director is yet to be assigned for the third project and the script for the last of the trilogy has yet been written. Those fact led to the speculation that the fate of the third film is in jeopardy as Cinematical used them to point out the possibility of the third film nonexistence. Still, the latter noted that the third "Tintin" may be developed if the first two installments are successful.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the audience for this Tintin movie Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are working on consists of only two people? Those two people's names are Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Actually, maybe we'd better add two more names to that interested in Tintin list. Pencil in two guys named Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. According to the Timesonline Pegg has been hanging out with Steven Spielberg, and says Spielberg told him, "Hey, maybe you and Nick Frost could play the Thompson Twins," in Tintin. Since like me you're not one of the four people interested in this movie, you no doubt have absolutely no idea who the Thompson Twins are.
