The sudden end of Participant Media came as a shock to many in the entertainment industry, but it hit documentary filmmakers particularly hard, with some concerned that backers for serious-minded, issue-driven projects are becoming ever more scarce.
Since its founding in 2004, the company — which sought to bring stories that could spark change to a wide audience — has been a staunch supporter of documentaries focused on social and justice issues, funded by the largesse of a billionaire, ex-eBay president Jeff Skoll.
None of its other nonfiction titles quite achieved the heights of 2006’s An Inconvenient Truth, released just two years after the company was formed: The Davis Guggenheim-directed film about Al Gore’s climate change slideshow rocketed to become the third-highest-grossing doc ever at the time and focused mainstream attention on climate change, inspiring studies about its impact. “That’s why we exist,” Skoll told The Hollywood Reporter in 2006, as Truth became a sensation.

James and Jane Ginsburg, the children of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, responded negatively to Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch receiving the 2024 Rbg Leadership Award.
In addition to Musk and Murdoch, Martha Stewart, financier and convicted felon Mike Milken and Sylvester Stallone were the recipients of this award.
This invitation-only celebration at the Library of Congress on April 13 had been organized to bestow the Award on the tech, media, finance, food and film leaders.
“The original purpose of the award was – I have it right here – ‘to recognize an extraordinary woman who has exercised a positive and notable influence on society and served as an exemplary role model in both principles and practice,'” James told CNN.
“And whether you want to discuss the wisdom of opening up that to men or not is one thing,” he continued. “But I think you would be hard-pressed to apply that...

The family of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is calling out an organization which had been entrusted to hand out a yearly award in her name.
Last week, the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation announced that Elon Musk, Rupert Murdoch, Martha Stewart, Michael Milken and Sylvester Stallone would be the 2024 recipients of the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award which, until this year, was called the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award and dedicated to “women of distinction.”
This year, however, the foundation announced it was refocusing the award on honoring “both women and men who have changed the world by doing what they do best.” Unfortunately, it seems someone forgot to tell the Ginsburg family.
The family’s statement, released to Mother Jones, reads as follows:

Elon Musk, Rupert Murdoch and three other individuals will no longer receive Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s namesake leadership award, presenting organization Opperman Foundation announced late Monday.
The awards’ cancellation came hours after singer and former Rbg award recipient Barbra Streisand slammed the decision to honor Musk and Murdoch, and several days after the late justice’s daughter spoke out against the award as well.
“The last thing we intended was to offend the family and friends of Rbg,” said Julie Opperman, chair of the Opperman Foundation, in a statement.
Earlier Monday, Streisand wrote on Instagram that she was joining “the Ginsburg family in condemning the choice of honorees this year. I had the privilege of meeting Justice Ginsburg on several occasions, and I strongly doubt she would approve of these awardees.”

An award named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg that was set to be given to Elon Musk and Rubert Murdoch has been canceled.
On Monday, the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation announced that it would be canceling its awards gala this year after Barbra Streisand — who was awarded the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award last year — and the late justice’s family denounced the organization over this year’s recipients.
“This year we selected leaders in different fields. We honored men for the first time. We thought Rbg’s teachings regarding equality should be practiced.

Barbra Streisand joined the family of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Monday in condemning the choice of a leadership award previously named after the late Supreme Court justice going to Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch, among others.
Streisand, who accepted the honor formerly known as the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award last year, wrote on Instagram she was “proud” to have done so “in memory of one of the most esteemed public figures in American history.”
The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation, the organization which delivers the award, changed the title this year from the Women of Leadership Award to just the Leadership Award, citing a pursuit of gender equality, and four of the five recipients are men.

Joey Graziadei is “so sorry” for mixing up Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, two very different public figures. In case you missed it, the current star of The Bachelor made the mix-up in a “How Online Are You?” quiz that Betches posted on YouTube earlier this month. When presented with a photo of Blanchard, who was convicted of second-degree murder for the 2015 death of her abusive mother, Graziadei thought the woman pictured was Ginsburg, the longtime Supreme Court justice who died in 2020. “I do know who this person is,” Graziadei said during the quiz. “Is it Ruth? No? Is [it] Jinsburg? Ginsburg? Something like that. Am I wrong? I know that she had something happen where she went to jail because of her mom.” After hearing the correct answer, Graziadei said, “Ruth Ginsburg — I don’t know what I’m saying.” And in a video ABC posted to the...

Joey Graziadei is clarifying that he definitely knows the difference between Gypsy Rose Blanchard and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The Bachelor lead’s apology came after he accidentally mixed up Blanchard and Ginsburg earlier this month in a Betches video that went viral on TikTok, earning more than 1.6 million views.
When shown a photo of Blanchard during a game called “How Online Are You,” Graziadei said, “I do know who this person is. Is it Ruth? No? Is it Jinsburg? Ginsburg? Something like that. Am I wrong?”
Though the reality star mixed up their names, he knew a bit about Blanchard’s background, adding, “I know that she had something happen where she went to jail because of her mom. … I don’t know what I’m saying.”

It seems like nothing will stop Bachelor Nation from loving Joey Graziadei.
Last week, The Bachelor star stuck his foot all the way in his mouth when he mistook Gypsy Rose Blanchard for Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
It’s not really clear why he thought the convicted murderer was a late Supreme Court Judge, but the mistake was a whopper.
Joey was so embarrassed after the flub that he admitted he’d “never live it down.”
And that seems to be the case because the mix-up is still being brought up and will likely never really die.
Even after Joey apologized for the mistake, The Bachelor fans continue to have plenty to say, but they aren’t nearly as critical as you might think.

“Is it Ruth? No? Jinsburg? Ginsburg? Something like that,” Joey answered. “Am I wrong? I know that she had something happen where she went to jail because of her mom.”
“Ruth Ginsburg,” Joey stated as his final answer in a video that has since gone viral and sparked a ton of criticism.

Earlier this week, Joey Graziadei put his whole foot in his mouth when he mistook Gypsy Rose Blanchard for Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
It was a shocking mistake, considering one of them is a convicted murderer, and the other is a late Supreme Court Justice.
Joey knew he messed up as soon as he said it, too, even commenting that he would never live it down.
Despite the error, Joey is still one of the most beloved Bachelor stars to hit our airwaves in recent years.
The Bachelor fans can’t get enough of him, and it’s pretty clear that the cast on his season are all head over heels, too.
But one Bachelor Nation star took a moment to hold Joey’s feet to the fire over his pop culture icon mixup, but we’re pretty sure even that was all in good fun.

The Bachelor’s Joey Graziadei needs to brush up on current events because he made a big mistake this week, and we’re still collectively laughing about it.
Joey has managed to work his way into the hearts of Bachelor Nation, quickly becoming one of the most beloved Bachelor stars in recent years.
He has often been praised for how he treats the women on his season, always showing respect, making eye contact, and actively listening to everything they say.
Because of that, he is everywhere right now, doing publicity for his season and — based on this recent interview — putting his foot all the way in his mouth.
And while the 28-year-old tennis coach is probably pretty embarrassed after this mistake, it’s safe to say that Bachelor fans will keep on loving him.
What did Joey say that has everyone clutching their pearls? Read on and find out.

Given the current dismal political and cultural climate as well as streaming services’ massive appetite for celebrity driven content, it comes as no surprise that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival is chock full of portrait documentaries. Frida Kahlo, Christopher Reeve, Luther Vandross and Tammy Faye are just a few of the boldface names that are being examined in various docus featured in the Sundance nonfiction lineup.
The festival is no stranger to star-driven docus. Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to “Arctic Convoy,” a Norwegian naval thriller that is set in the middle of World War II. The film is from the producers of “The Wave” trilogy, so it’s a homecoming of sorts given that Magnolia released all three installments of that series.
“Arctic Convoy” is directed by Henrik M. Dahlsbakken and written by Christian Sibenherz, Harald Rosenløw Eeg and Lars Gudmestad. Magnolia is planning a 2024 release for the picture.
The film unfolds in 1942, as the leader of a convoy carrying vital military supplies to a Norwegian outpost decides to proceed through treacherous, enemy-infested waters despite the recall of their military escort. Fighting for their lives against German air and naval forces, the 35 civilian merchant ships brave brutal Arctic seas to bring much-needed support to soldiers on the front lines.
The film is produced by Martin Sundland, Catrin Gundersen and Thea Benedikte Karlsen for FanteFilm.

Although attributed to the late Major League Baseball Hall of Famer/wit/pitchman Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, one could imagine Albert Maysles, Frederick Wiseman or other legends of the observational/vérité strand of documentary positing this as a driving theme of a keynote address. Such is the understated prowess of this often misunderstood cultural icon, whose considerable achievements both on and off the field warrant a worthy documentary profile.
Enter filmmaker Sean Mullin, whose canon has consisted primarily of fiction features. Back in 2018, his producer, Peter Soboloff, was impressed with Rbg, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, about television icon Fred Rogers, and he suggested that Mullin consider Yogi Berra as a protagonist. The 2024 presidential election is officially 52 weeks away, and Alyssa Milano is reminding women of the importance of using their voice at the polls. The actress, in partnership with fine jewelry brand Awe Inspired, has just launched the “One Year Out (Rise Up in Awe)” campaign with a collection designed to spark conversations around the important issues tied to next year’s race.
“I went into this wanting to tell the story of women and our struggle and our dreams and our ambitions,” Milano tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I would argue that storytelling, whether that be through fashion or music or writing or personal expression, is really the only thing that moves us forward in society. So, keeping that in mind and being a storyteller, I really wanted to tell a story with these pieces; a story of fighting for bodily autonomy and women fighting for the right to vote.”

Although Max Greenfield's "New Girl" character, Schmidt, has just one daughter (named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg!), in real life, the actor shares two kids with his wife, Tess Sanchez Greenfield, who works as a casting director. The duo got married in 2008 and have since welcomed a daughter, Lilly, and a son, Ozzie. Tess frequently shares photos of their squad on social media, and Max has taken to TikTok quite a few times to share sweet videos with his kids (including a deeply iconic dance with Lilly to Olivia Rodrigo's "Get Him Back").
Max and Tess opened up about their family during a September 2021 interview with Parents magazine. Max revealed that he didn't feel ready to be a dad when Tess got pregnant with Lilly, joking, "You're a psychopath if you're about to have your first child and you're like, 'I'm ready for this!' But after Lilly, I knew I wanted a second.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for “Power Play,” which world premieres in the main competition section at next month’s series festival Canneseries. The fiction series is a raucous satire inspired by the real-life goings on behind the scenes when politician Gro Harlem Brundtland came to power in Norway in 1981. The power struggles and backroom bickering in the show bring to mind “Veep” and “In the Loop.”
Brundtland was the first female prime minister of any Nordic country, not just Norway, and one of Scandinavia’s leading figures in the fight for women’s rights, gender equality and abortion rights, with a standing on a par with Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Gloria Steinem in the U.S., or Simone Veil in France.

CNN has scored its first Oscars win: “Navalny,” the harrowing film following Russian dissident and former presidential candidate Alexei Navalny, took the prize for documentary feature film at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
The documentary, directed by Daniel Roher, gained new relevance after Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The CNN Films/Warner Bros. documentary is a fly-on-the-wall account of the rousing populist who was once a presidential candidate — and posed such a threat to Putin that Navalny was poisoned in a botched assassination plot ordered by the Kremlin in 2020. Navalny was detained in January 2021 and currently is serving a nine-year sentence in a Russian gulag. He has spent much of the sentence in solitary confinement.
Roher, in accepting the award, dedicated the Oscar win to Navalny and “to all political prisoners around the world”: “Alexei, the world has not forgotten your vital message to us all… We must...

Wade, a recent international surge in films about abortion rights and the endangerment thereof — from period pieces like “Happening” to present-day portraits like “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” — almost seemed to anticipate such a devastating blow. In America in particular, where talk of abortion access has always been snarled up in extreme religious rhetoric and eternal red-blue division, it has never been a subject to be treated complacently. Urgent and unvarnished, Tracy Droz Tragos’ documentary “Plan C” is an early entry in what might be considered post-Roe cinema, focusing less on pro-choice ideology than on the practicalities of ensuring choice in a system increasingly stacked against the idea.
Having premiered at Sundance last month — with SXSW next on its festival tour — “Plan C” arrives seven years after Tragos’ Emmy-nominated documentary “Abortion: Stories Women Tell,” which centered the individual narratives of...

In the spring of 1972, seven members of the Jane Collective, an underground service in Chicago, were arrested for providing illegal abortions to women in need. The collective had been founded by Heather Booth in 1965, when a friend in need of the procedure was nearly suicidal. “Pregnant? Don’t want to be? Call Jane,” read ads placed in the underground press, offering a counseling service mostly for low-income women and women of color. The Janes would refer women to abortion providers, sometimes performing abortions themselves. After the organization was discovered by the Chicago police, the seven Jane members’ lawyer successfully delayed the case’s court proceedings until the January 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which struck down federal and state abortion bans in the United States.

Live to Lead is a documentary series directed by Geoff Blackwell with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Greta Thunberg, Bryan Stevenson, Jacinda Ardern, Siya Kolisi, Gloria Steinem and Albie Sachs.
Leaders committed to making a difference in the world share their inspiring life stories in this series.
