“Oppenheimer” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 3. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Anatomy of a Fall” and “Killers of the Flower Moon ” — as well as “Maestro” and “Past Lives.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “The Holdovers ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “Poor Things,” plus “Air”, “American Fiction” and “Barbie.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 19 times, including the 2023 winner for best comedy/musical editing, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” topped the dramatic feature editing category at the American Cinema Editors’ 74th Ace Eddie Awards, while “The Holdovers” won the category for best edited comedic feature during Sunday’s ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Jennifer Lame edited “Oppenheimer,” which also took top honors at last week’s SAG Awards and Producers Guild Awards. The recent honor further cements the film’s position to take top prize at the Oscars next weekend. But she faces competition from Kevin Tent, who won here for “The Holdovers.”
Should Lame go on to win the Oscar, it will mark nine years since a woman has won. Margaret Sixel won in 2015 for “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Tent, also president of Ace, kicked off the ceremony addressing last year’s labor strikes, saying, “It’s great to look out and see so many rock star editors…Last year was an extraordinarily...

Between February 10 and March 7, a dozen motion picture guilds lauded the most outstanding achievements in their respective fields during the previous year. The 2024 guild awards season then officially concluded with the announcement of the Writers Guild of America honors on April 14. In the end, “Oppenheimer” outpaced all of its competitors with prizes from nine guilds.
Typically, all 13 guilds hand out their trophies before the corresponding Oscars take place, but this year’s WGA Awards were delayed six weeks because of the organization’s recent 148-day strike. The groups whose ceremonies preceded the Oscars on March 10 comprise art directors, directors, makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, visual effects artists, actors, producers, sound mixers, film editors, cinematographers, sound editors, and casting directors.
Below is a complete breakdown of guild wins by film. See the full guild nominations scorecard here.

In all the excitement of the BAFTAs, it’s worth appreciating the craft that helps all those films make any sense at all. Here’s the full list of the British Film Editors’ award-winners.
Imagine a world without film and TV editors. It doesn’t bear thinking about, really. Making anything with a camera at all would be bloody hard, for a start, and then you’d have to use that take where Idris Elba realised he had yoghurt on his trousers. Oh, behave.
Good job, then, we’ve got British Film Editors, the non-profit association dedicated to the art of sticking all those bits of footage together to make something sensible-looking. Every year, they hold the Cut Above Awards, a celebration of editing achievement comparable to the guild awards in the States.
Held on 16th February, the 2024 awards pitched current awards favourites Oppenheimer and Poor Things alongside documentaries like Still: A Michael J.

Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is a box office behemoth, making $380 million in the U.S. and $690 million worldwide. What does composer Daniel Pemberton think about those huge numbers for the sequel? “It’s always really nice when a movie actually super connects with people,” he tells us. “I don’t think I’ve ever done any movie that’s connected as intensely as ‘Spider Verse.’ It is nice when [box office] does correlate to great work, and I’m really proud of what all of us did on this film.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Pemberton talks openly about the “collaborative process” between himself and the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, plus editor Michael Andrews and writer/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. He says, “I think one of the things that really works is we’re all throwing ideas backwards and forwards with each other being like,...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). "Donnie Darko," the 2001 Richard Kelly-directed mind-bender of a movie about time travel, death, and the dreadfully existential experience that is high school is memorable for many reasons. Today, if you so much as mention the cult film, images of Frank the rabbit and his shot-out eye immediately come to mind. Frank is the stuff of nightmares, enhancing the movie's atmosphere with his mysterious and ominous presence in the title character's life. However, Frank's creepiness is only one part — albeit a big one — of the film's peculiarities, none of which would be anywhere near as effective if it weren't for one major thing: the music.
The score for "Donnie Darko" is perhaps just as memorable as Frank, that pesky jet engine, the incredible finale, and that one uncomfortable scene in Donnie's (Jake Gyllenhaal) therapist's office. It is the thing that sets the tone for the entire movie, kicking things off...

The soundtrack to "Donnie Darko" is among my all-time favorite movie soundtracks, and I'm surely not alone in this. Not only is the score by Michael Andrews hauntingly beautiful, but the licensed songs played throughout are New Wave gems. Seriously, what other movie soundtrack has The Church, Oingo Boingo, and Joy Division on it?
However, the most memorable inclusion on the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack had to be not one, but two songs from English pop duo Tears for Fears -- one was the famous Andrews and Gary Jules cover of "Mad World," while the other was the studio version of "Head Over Heels." It's hard to separate either song from the film anymore, and the way they are both integrated into the film shows how carefully constructed each element of Richard Kelly's movie is.

New Delhi, Nov 25 (Ians) During his days as an active referee, Michael Andrews was a leading name in the circuit, who rose to become a FIFA referee. Currently the Chairman of the All India Football Federation (Aiff) Referees Committee, Andrews has his task cut out – to take Indian refereeing to the next level of professionalism.
A man of huge experience, Andrews remains unperturbed by the challenges ahead. While talking to www.the-aiff.com, he clearly spelt out his preferences and plans to achieve the target.
Andrews pointed out that various changes have been strategised to reach the desired goal. He said that one of the most important changes the refereeing system in India will see in near future is the appointment of 50 professional referees on a full-time role with the Aiff.
“We are currently in a period of transition while moving into a more robust and professional system. I want to thank the Aiff President,...

Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Belgian filmmakers Maya Duverdier and Amélie van Elmbt’s documentary, Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel, is a deeply moving spiritual deconstruction of a cultural landmark. The directors trust the viewer to know the history going in, allowing Dreaming Walls to capture the mood of the Chelsea.
New York City’s Hotel Chelsea opened on 23rd St. in 1884. Its 12 stories of brick housed some of the greatest names across all the arts. Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain were among the earliest check-ins. Madonna planned her global domination, and later shot photographs for her book, Sex, on the eighth floor. Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey shot Chelsea Girls (1966) in the rooms the Factory members lived. Arthur C. Clarke wrote the screen treatment for 2001: A Space Odyssey in its rooms. Marilyn Monroe lived at the Chelsea as a young actor, and Arthur Miller stayed there after their much-later divorce.

This modern romantic comedy about stand-up comedians generates a genuine warmth about people, the ones-who-need-people kind. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s comic dramatization of the way they became a couple is a big winner, with heart-tugging performances from Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan, and fine characterizations by Holly Hunter, Zenobia Shroff, Ray Romano, and Anupam Kher.

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

Just hours before John Jonchuck was arrested for allegedly throwing his daughter off a St. Petersburg bridge, where she fell 62 feet to her death, his strange behavior caused his attorney to call 911. Jonchuck, 25, was in attorney Genevieve Torres's office to sign paperwork about a custody dispute. His 5-year-old daughter, Phoebe, was with him. During the meeting, he rambled about his attorney being God, and asked her to read from a Swedish-language Bible. He told her that he was heading to a nearby Catholic church. When he finally left, Torres called 911. "He's nuts," Torres told the dispatcher in a 911 tape obtained by People.

Sex Tape gets off to a bad start and I mean a really bad start as Annie (Cameron Diaz) sits down on her mommy blog to tap out her frustrations with the lack of sex in her marriage to Jay (Jason Segel) while recounting the long, sexually charged history of their relationship. Within minutes this movie has you saying, "We get it! Now let's get on with the movie," and yet, the set up takes another 20-30 minutes before the first truly funny scene takes place. As it turns out, that scene, which runs about 7-10 minutes is the only consistently funny scene in the movie and certainly not worth the price of admission. Annie and Jay are married with two kids, the oldest of which is just about to "graduate" from the fourth to the fifth grade, and their marriage has lost its sizzle. However, as Annie is heading...

For many comedy performers, the ultimate sign of success is being able to create a comedy film that is tailored to their sensibilities, that shows off their strengths as a performer, and that they feel some sense of authorship over, and Melissa McCarthy has more than earned that right. It's not about "Bridesmaids" or "Identity Thief" or any individual performance she's given so far, and it's not about "Mike and Molly" or the fanbase she's built there. It's about a certain degree of inarguability that a performer reaches, and that's where McCarthy is right now. Along with her husband Ben Falcone, she wrote "Tammy," a road-trip movie that Falcone directed, and if this is the reward she gets for all the hard work that got her to this point, then I'm glad they both got to have the experience. I just wish they'd made a good movie in the process.

Oscar-nominee Melissa McCarthy plays Tammy in New Line Cinema’s comedy Tammy, a Warner Bros. Pictures release.
Marking Ben Falcone’s directorial debut, check out the latest trailer before the film hits theaters on July 2nd.
Tammy (McCarthy) is having a bad day. She’s totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house.
It’s time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she’s broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Sarandon), is her only option—with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

The Five-Year Engagement
Directed by: Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Jacki Weaver
Running Time: 2 hrs 4 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: April 27, 2012
Plot: After a year of dating, Tom (Segel) and Violet (Blunt) decide to get married. Once Violet gets accepted to graduate school at University of Michigan, their plans for the ultimate wedding are put on further notice.
Who’S It For? Guys, this isn’t an “engagement” you’ll want to put off for as long as possible (like ol’ Turtle did last week in Think Like a Man). This one still maintains the special quality of frat humor seen in previous Apatow maturity movies like Knocked Up. At the same time, the relationship of Blunt & Segel balances the movie out to offer material that’s more “for the ladies,” if you’re going to force me to use crude demographics.

Alright, you hopefully read our Tribeca Film Festival review of Nicholas Stoller's "The Five Year Engagement" this morning. We hear that It's a sweet and funny comedy that veers off in tangents, but fortunately, it never loses its way.
Hot on its heels comes the info of the accompanying soundtrack Ep, a brief five-song set with some interesting and comical connections. For music-heads that like their swooning, bittersweet and soulful pop songs comes the reveal of a few Van Morrison songs: "Crazy Love," performed by Audra Mae, another cover of "Into The Mystic" done by The Swell Season (the musical duo from the film "Once") and "When The Evening Sun Goes Down" by Brett Dennen. We hear there's a least one actual Van Morrison song featured in the film as well.
Rather hilariously (and this writer assumes this is a minor comedic spoiler so watch out), the opening track...

Where would we be without music in our favorite films? While some may rely mostly on score, the needle drop of a pop tune can be quite satisfying when paired with a memorable scene. There could be a few opportunities for this type of moment on the way thanks to some exciting music news that also concerns the film world.
While we’d still love to get our hands on the score by “Jeff Who Lives At Home” and “Cyrus” composer Michael Andrews, we’ll definitely settle for a new track from Beck from the former film. The Duplass’ latest film has helped give Beck fans a pretty stellar new track in “Looking For A Sign” that falls right between Mutations and Sea Change-era Beck, which is certainly a good thing. The mostly acoustic-driven track is also a step away from the work he did as Sex Bob-Omb on the...

HollywoodNews.com: Our selected Celeb to be our “Hollywood Cool Celeb of the Week” is Adam Lambert. One of our favorite Stars!
In August 2011, Lambert announced that his second studio album, Trespassing, would be released on March 20, 2012. Anticipation for its release has been building and is considerable.

Trespassing – The title track was co-written with Grammy Award winning Pharrell Williams,[98] while the album’s lead single, “Better Than I Know Myself”, a collaboration with Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly, was released on December 20, 2011 to all digital retailers. His debut live performance of the single on January 17, 2012 on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno received overwhelmingly positive reviews, focusing on Lambert’s soaring and impeccable vocals on this melodically challenging song, as well as his more stripped down and sophisticated look.

The Christmas number one: a supposedly hallowed achievement, and yet both Mr Blobby and Bob The Builder have both walked away with it in the past. In recent years, the market immediately before Christmas has been over-populated by the deluge of “talented” winners from Simon Cowell’s pop processing plant on the moon (probably) and vocal dissenters seem to have turned the Christmas Number One into some sort of insipid personification of everything that is wrong with the music business.
But, there have been some shining lights in the history of the Christmas Number One, despite the infamous ear-bleeders and the outrageous stories of classic songs being overtaken for the accolade by awful one-hit-wonders. And this article is hereby devoted to listing said highlights.
Somewhat unthinkably, there is no place for “Fairytale of New York”, for which we can thank the Pet Shop Boys, whose cover of “Always On My Mind” took the 1987 spot,...

The 2011 fall TV season officially kicked off Monday night (Sept. 19), bringing us the old favorites like "Dancing With the Stars" and "Castle" and new faces on "The Playboy Club" and "Two and a Half Men." What did the Zap2it readers have to say?
"Castle":
"One of the big beefs some people have with these types of shows is the "recovery" of the characters after being shot (with a near mortal wound to boot). Sorry, but no one who had their chest cracked open is going to return to work in three months. (Nor would they be sitting up in the bed the very next day...) I'll suspend my disbelief because it was a good episode." - Jenn Zellers
"The Playboy Club":
"Surprisingly, I'm very excited about the prospects of this show. I tuned in expecting to just watch the pilot and then drop it. I'm now hooked.

Video game teasers tend to stick to a certain formula: dazzle the viewer with awesome graphics, show off some of the games' abilities and maybe dribble a little story out to tantalize would-be players. But every so often, one piece of video-centric marketing will float above the rest or sink to join the sludge.
In Clip Analysis, I'll be looking at trailers, teasers and just about any game-related video in an effort to call out what works and what doesn't in terms of communicating a particular game's coolness.
This time, I'll be taking a look at the Dust to Dust trailer for "Gears of War 3."
It's been five years since the first installment of Epic's "Gear of War" franchise hit the Xbox 360. A lot's happened to Marcus, Dom and the rest of Delta Squad but most gamers probably have the detritus of dozens, maybe even hundreds of games in their skulls from the past decade.

Michael Andrews has composed the score for the upcoming comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home. The movie is written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass who worked with the composer on last year’s indie hit Cyrus starring John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei. Jeff Who Lives at Home stars Jason Segel as a man searching for the meaning of life while on a mundane errand to buy some glue for his mother. Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon and Judy Greer are co-starring. Jason Reitman, Russell Smith and Lianne Halfon (Juno) are producing. The comedy is set to premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. Paramount Vantage will release the movie in theaters on March 2, 2012.
Andrews is coming off scoring two summer comedy hits with Bridesmaids and Bad Teacher. As previously reported, he is also writing the score for the Judd Apatow-produced comedy The Five-Year Engagement...

Damn writer Gareth Bunkham and his perfect article on 52 Reasons Why Back To The Future Might Just Be The Greatest Film Of All Time. Since that cracking article was reissued last week by WhatCulture!; I have been honoured with the task of proving why, one of my favourite films of all time, a one Donnie Darko, should join this prestigious list, that along with the 80’s sci-fi blockbuster, so far includes;
Ghostbusters,
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho,
Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver.
and Jaws!
As Donnie Darko turns 10 years old this year, below are 50 reasons and to all you Darko fans, enjoy:
1. Richard Kelly
Writer, director, visionary, Richard Kelly made Donnie Darko what it is today – a magical film that inspires and entertains on every viewing. For a first time filmmaker, the direction and innovation of Donnie Darko is stunning and for a debut feature, highly admirable. I could go on...
