India’s Mithila Palkar (Netflix’s “Little Things”) and Jaaved Jaaferi (“Sooryavanshi”) and Bangladesh’s Siam Ahmed (“Shaan”) have joined the cast of “In the Ring (Story of a Burqa Boxer).”
Set in the female Muslim boxing community of Khidderpore, Kolkata, India, the film is a psychological thriller about Shama, a 17-year-old boxer who exchanges places with her double to fight in the national championship when she is framed in her aunt’s murder.
The cast also includes Razia Shabnam, one of the first Indian women to become an international boxing referee and coach.
The Hindi-language film will be directed by U.S.-based filmmaker Alka Raghuram, who previously directed the acclaimed documentary “Burqa Boxers,” about Muslim women boxers in Kolkata.
The project is being produced by Sreyashii Sengupta for Singapore-based Darpan Global and Souvikk Dasgupta for Oriizon Global in India, with Los Angles-based Rick Ambros serving as executive producer.

Celluloid Dreams has acquired world sales rights (excluding Australia and New Zealand) to Oz pic Babyteeth, which will star Ben Mendelsohn (Ready Player One) and Essie Davis (The Babadook). Production is due to get underway this summer on the Screen Australia-backed movie which is set to be directed by first-timer Shannon Murphy. Pic is being produced by Alex White and executive produced by Jan Chapman (The Piano). The bittersweet comedy charts the story of a couple who realize their seriously ill teenage daughter has fallen in love with a drug dealer. Celluloid Dreams will be selling in Cannes. Ivanhoe Pictures has partnered with Pacific Horizon Pictures to devise a slate of local-language films in Vietnam.
Among their first planned movies is a remake of Indian survival drama “Trapped.” The pair are also close to a joint acquisition of remake rights to Colombian thriller “The Hidden Face.”
The ambition is for the two companies to co-develop material, that Ivanhoe will co-finance and which Pacific Horizon would executive produce for audiences in Vietnam.
Pacific Horizon is a startup production company founded by Louie Nguyen investor and producer at Hk Films and by veteran U.S. producer Rick Ambros. It has offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Los Angeles.
“(Pacific Horizon Pictures’) insight and understanding of the Vietnamese film industry is invaluable and we are eager to continue expanding Ivanhoe’s local language slate with this exciting partnership,” said John Penotti, president and CEO of Ivanhoe.
