There was barely a dry eye in the house at the Los Angeles premiere three decades ago of HBO’s landmark AIDS’ film “And the Band Played On.” During the end credit sequence set to Elton John’s “The Last Song” was a montage of well-known people who had died of AIDS or were HIV positive including Ryan White, Rock Hudson, Anthony Perkins, Rudolf Nureyev, Arthur Ashe, Michael Bennett, Liberace, Halston, Peter Allen, Denholm Elliott, Brad Davis, Amanda Blake and Robert Reed.
No wonder emotions were running high. Deaths were rising every year. According to Social Security Administration, some 37,000 people died of HIV Illness in 1993. And it would be three years before the introduction of Haart-highly active antiretroviral therapy-that is often called the anti-hiv “cocktail.”
Based on Randy Shilts’ 1987 best-seller, “And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic,” the acclaimed film, which premiered on HBO on Sept.

Hugh Jackman is the picture of tall, dark, and handsome. The charismatic Australian is a gifted singer, dancer, and actor. He’s starred in numerous films — his most memorable characters include Marvel’s hot-tempered Wolverine, vampire hunter Van Helsing, and circus great P.T. Barnum. He’s also lit up the stage in several award-winning productions on Broadway. In fact, the most embarrassing moment of Jackman’s impressive career happened during a production of Beauty and the Beast.
Hugh Jackman recalls peeing on stage as his most embarrassing moment
We’ve all heard the old saying “The show must go on.” Live performances are incredibly difficult, and any on stage faux pas needs to be glossed over as if it never happened. Anyone who has ever danced in a recital will certainly recall that if you trip, fall, or miss a step, you just keep on going. The audience will never even notice,...

What do the 55th annual Academy Awards which took place April 11, 1983 have in common with the upcoming 95th Oscars?
Steven Spielberg and John Williams.
Back in 1983, Spielberg’s beloved “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” was nominated for nine Academy Awards including film, director and score. This year, the 76-year-old Spielberg and Williams, 91, are both nominated for “The Fabelmans.” The filmmaker’s semi-autobiographical drama is in contention for eight Academy Awards including film, director, screenplay and score.
The 55th Oscars made history with Ben Kingsley becoming the first actor of Indian descent to win the best actor Oscar for his extraordinary portrayal of “Gandhi” while Louis Gossett Jr. become the first black actor to win in the supporting category with his iconic turn as tough-nosed D.I. in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” This year, history could be made again in the best actress category. Songwriter, composer, producer and arranger Burt Bacharach, a dominant force in American popular music for half a century, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 94.
Bacharach’s publicist Tina Brausam revealed the news on Thursday.
As a tunesmith, the nonpareil melodist Bacharach found fame in every medium.
His songs — many of them written with lyricist Hal David — became chart-topping successes, particularly in the hands of vocalist Dionne Warwick. Among ’60s songwriting duos, only Lennon-McCartney rivaled Bacharach-David in terms of commercial and artistic achievement. Bacharach collected six Grammys as a writer, arranger and performer from 1967-2005.
His music was ubiquitous on screens both big and small in the ’60s and ’70s, and he was recognized by the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his work on “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and “Arthur” (1981). He collected a 1971 Emmy for a TV recital of his work.

Burt Bacharach, the velvety smooth composer and orchestrator whose partnership with lyricist Hal David brought swanky sophistication to pop music in the 1960s, has died. He was 94.
Bacharach died Wednesday of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, publicist Tina Brausam announced.
Bacharach composed the music for some 50 top 10 hits, including six that reached No. 1. Among his most celebrated efforts were “Walk on By,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” “What’s New Pussycat?” “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “Alfie,” “This Guy’s in Love With You” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”
He and David were dubbed the “Rodgers & Hart of the ’60s.” Many of their songs were popularized by Dionne Warwick, whose singing style inspired Bacharach to experiment with new rhythms and harmonies, composing innovative melodies for such tunes “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “I Say a Little Prayer.

Hugh Jackman found himself rejecting a huge opportunity earlier in his career. But the mistake was one of many that taught Jackman the cost of keeping up an image in Hollywood.
What Hugh Jackman has to say about his image as Hollywood’s nicest guy Hugh Jackman | Ryan Emberley/Getty Images
Jackman is well-aware that his real-life persona is often admired by the public. Many have no doubts that Jackman is one of Hollywood’s nicest A-listers. But in a 2013 interview with Men’s Journal, Jackman confided that he wasn’t too fond of the label. Mostly because he didn’t enjoy labels period.
“As an actor, I’ve always believed that any label is your enemy,” he said.
Jackman revealed that his reputation for generosity came from his upbringing and just old-fashioned human decency.

Hugh Jackman became a movie star with Wolverine in the first “X-Men” movie more than 20 years ago, slashing his way to blockbuster visibility with a role that continues to dominate his career. Part of that is because even fans of Jackman’s musical talents closely associate him with a scowling mutant, and rather than dispelling that perception, he simply invented another persona alongside it as a song-and-dance man. He’s played Peter Allen in “The Boy From Oz,” P.T. Barnum in “The Greatest Showman” and, most recently, Professor Harold Hill in the hit new Broadway production of “The Music Man,” but he’s never played Hugh Jackman.
“When I was getting into this business, the playbook for being a movie star was being mysterious,” the 53-year-old actor said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Don’t let anybody in. Leave them wanting more. Don’t reveal things. Project a certain image.

Hugh Jackman says Broadway shows can sometimes get saucy.
The 54-year-old actor currently stars in The Music Man in the famous theatre district, but it’s not his first time performing there. In an interview with Variety, Jackman revealed his first role was in The Boy From Oz which opened in 2003.

He said “the most fun I ever had was playing Peter Allen” on the show due to all the improv moments in the second act where he could interact with the audience.
“There was, I don’t know, roughly 10 to 12 minutes of every show that was ad-libbed,” Jackman said. “Once I was 50 or 60 shows in, I felt completely free to do whatever the hell I wanted. I was an a—- at times.”

Hugh Jackman needs one more trophy to complete his Egot grand slam of show business awards: an Oscar. Can he wrap that up in the coming year with his performance in Florian Zeller‘s upcoming “The Son”? Around 2,000 Gold Derby users are already predicting the 2023 awards, and even sight unseen the early consensus is that Jackman will take Best Actor. Do you think our readers’ initial instincts are spot-on or way off?
The first award Jackman crossed off his list was the Tony. After breaking through in the US as tough guy Wolverine in the “X-Men” movies, he showed that he was also a consummate song-and-dance man by playing Australian songwriter Peter Allen in “The Boy from Oz,” which won him Best Actor in a Musical in 2004. He actually hosted the Tony Awards ceremony on the night he won that award, and he won Best Variety Performance at the Emmys...

Hugh Jackman is living his dream on Broadway right now. Which is to say the veritable Tony and Drama Desk Award winner is finally getting to play Professor Harold Hill in Meredith Willson’s The Music Man. It’s a part he’s dreamed of since he was 14. Although for a certain breed of fan, there is only one role they dream to see Jackman in again: X-Men’s the Wolverine.
And the star obliged them recently when he donned Logan’s fabled adamantium claws on a Broadway stage. So to speak.
In a moment that went viral over the weekend, especially after Jackman shared it, a fan at the curtain call of The Music Man in the Winter Garden Theatre had good enough seats to catch Jackman’s eye when he brought along a foam set of Wolverine’s claws. Ever an actor who knows how to work a...

Billie Eilish is the new Christopher Cross again. The singer, along with her brother and collaborator Finneas, won the Best Original Song Oscar on Sunday for the penning the title track to “No Time to Die,” and with that, Eilish has once again duplicated Cross’ unique resume: They are the only people who have achieved Grammy single-night sweep of the general four categories and to have won the Best Original Song Oscar.
Cross ruled the early ’80s, winning the Big Four Grammy categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist — in 1981 for his eponymous debut album and his signature tune “Sailing.” Later that year, he earned another Billboard No. 1 with “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)”, the title track from “Arthur.” Cross won the Best Original Song Oscar in March 1982, shared with co-writers Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager and Peter Allen.

What movie won Best Picture 40 years ago? It’s doubtful you can remember off the top of your head, but upon hearing its iconic electronic score, a vision of British Olympic athletes running on the beach would likely spring to mind and the answer would be obvious: “Chariots of Fire.”
Coming into the 54th ceremony on March 29, 1982, this British biopic had seven nominations compared to 12 for Warren Beatty‘s epic biopic “Reds.” Johnny Carson hosted as these two films slugged it out among stiff competition (it was a rare year in which all the Best Picture and Best Director nominees lined up), the older acting generation was honored, a “divine” presence put on quite the show and a new category was introduced.
This marked the second, and to date last, time three films were nominated for the “Big Five.” It looked to be a big night for Beatty, who was...

Happy 51st birthday on October 12, 2019, to Hugh Jackman, one of those rare performers with different faces.
For the populist filmgoers, their image of Jackman is likely as the mighty Wolverine from nine of the 10 “X-Men” films. With the ability to slice and dice bad guys with a mere swing of his razor-fingered hand, Jackman is still brought a moodiness and, at times, sadness to the character that has only endeared him more to audiences.

It's been over 10 years since Hugh Jackman took the Broadway stage by storm, and this time around, he's making a lot more noise.
The Greatest Showman star will take on the role of con man "Professor" Harold Hill, opposite two-time Tony Award-winner Sutton Foster as librarian Marian Paroo, in a major upcoming revival of Meredith Wilson's The Music Man. The iconic musical follows Jackman's charismatic con man as he arrives at the small Iowa town of River City posing as a boys' marching band organizer. Hill's big plan is to run away with the money he collects for musical instruments and uniforms, but Foster's Marian sees through his scam and plans to expose him. Of course, romantic complications ensue.
This will be Jackson's first musical role since his 2003 Tony-winning Broadway debut in the Peter Allen bio-musical The Boy From Oz, though he has appeared on Broadway in limited engagements three times since.

Lady Gaga shared in the Best Original Song Oscar win for “Shallow.” She sang the smash hit in “A Star is Born” and is credited as a co-writer alongside a trio of men: Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson. This win makes make her the 14th woman to take home an Oscar for songwriting. Her co-writers bring the total tally of male winners in this category to a whopping 146.

“Craig would have loved it” was a common refrain heard in the lobby of the Television Academy’s Wolf Theatre on Sunday night at the conclusion of Thespians Go Hollywood, a tribute to the life and work of the late prolific film, TV and Broadway producer Craig Zadan. Not only would he have loved it, he could have produced it from above as it was the kind of dazzling, star-laden musical show only Zadan and his longtime producing partner Neil Meron could put together, as they have proven time and again in a long career celebrating the art and science of show biz.
Let’s face it, when you have a murderer’s row of incomparable talents like Kristen Chenoweth doing a duet with Sean Hayes from their Broadway teaming in the Zadan-Meron production Promises Promises, followed by her lilting solo of “Til There Was You” from The Music Man,...

Craig Zadan was looking forward to Thespians Go Hollywood, the Educational Theatre Foundation’s gala that was held on Sunday night. He and his producing partner Neil Meron were set to receive the inaugural Theater for Life Award, which supports theater programs in underserved schools. When Zadan unexpectedly died on Aug. 31 after complications of a shoulder replacement surgery, Meron suggested that the celebration become a tribute to Zadan.
And what a tribute it was. With Broadway figures Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman serving as musical directors, the evening was a star-studded trip down memory lane.
“How do you say goodbye to a friend?” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” actress Nia Vardalos asked the crowd at the Television Academy in Los Angeles. “How do you say goodbye to Crag Zadan? Well, we’re not going to. We’re going to sing some songs and tell some stories. We are going to...

If there was ever a warning that a superhero film was going to trudge down a grim path, that's as unsubtle an indication as you're gonna get. It's a warning worth heeding, though. Logan is a long, grave, and violent neo-Western; a Dark Knight of the soul that earns its R-rating before its first scene is complete. For audiences whose appetite for Marvel's vaguely juvenile destructo-thons has congealed into cultural obligation and drudgery, Logan is a welcome expansion of what a superhero saga can be. Celia Pacquola says buying a whiteboard was the best decision she has ever made as she prepares to shoot Rosehaven — the ABC comedy series she wrote and created with Luke McGregor.

The whiteboard in question, despite making the comment in jest, was how Pacquola and fellow comedian McGregor mapped out their new eight-part comedy series, which starts filming on Monday in Geeveston, Tasmania
The series, which also stars McGregor (Utopia, It.s a Date, Luke Warm Sex) and Pacquola (The Beautiful Lie, Utopia, Laid) was cooked up while both were on tour for their various comedy shows.
.Luke McGregor and I knew each other from standup but became really close friends from filming Utopia seasons 1 and 2,. she says..

Mad Max: Fury Road has scooped the pool at Australia’s top film awards, the AACTAs, with George Miller’s high-action epic scoring wins in eight of its 11 nominated categories, including best film and best director.
Jocelyn Moorhouse’s retro western The Dressmaker won the Aacta People’s Choice Award at the Sydney event, and Kate Winslet won the Best Actress award for her lead performance (and convincing accent) as a spiteful Aussie seamstress in outback 1950s Australia. Winslet accepted her award via smartphone video selfie.
Her onscreen mum, Judy Davis, was the odds-on favourite to win Best Supporting Actress, which she did. In another acting gong for The Dressmaker, Hugo Weaving seemed as surprised as everyone else when his name was called to the stage of Sydney’s The Star casino complex.

Lukewarm Off The Presses: Hugh & Amy's Musicals, Diana's Director, Lee's Horror, & Eddie's Operation
Five stories we didn't share in all the hulaballoo of our trip to Los Angeles, the recovery week's madness and now our Thanksgiving prep.
