This season will be the last for Lifetime Television's Strong Medicine, which as the longest-running original drama series ever created for basic cable has anchored the network's Sunday night drama block for six years. "After 132 episodes, we felt that the show had, as all television programs eventually do, run its course, and it was time to offer viewers another option," Lifetime said. Season-to-date, the series is averaging 2.5 million total viewers per first-run episode, which is up 10% from last season. Both the network and Steve Mosko, president of Sony Pictures Television, the show's producer, praised executive producers Tammy Ader and Whoopi Goldberg and the cast. " 'Strong Medicine' changed Lifetime and the landscape of cable programming forever," Mosko said. "We are so proud of the show." The current season concludes early next year.

Lifetime is looking to spin off its successful medical drama Strong Medicine. The network has ordered a backdoor pilot for a new drama from Sony Pictures Television described as a younger, hipper and more action-packed version of Strong Medicine. Titled Strong Medicine: First Response, the new project centers on two sisters by adoption, white and black, who work as a paramedic and a trauma surgeon, respectively. Strong Medicine's creator Tammy Ader and Lisa Melamed (Fox's Party of Five) are writing the script for the backdoor pilot, which will air as an episode of the mothership show's upcoming sixth season.
