"They're here."
With those two words, the nebulous world of the supernatural, the ominous ambiguity of the paranormal, and the deep-seated terror that is inherent in the concept of ghosts were perfectly summed up by 1982's "Poltergeist." Despite the film being over 40 years old, it still holds up as one of the most modern movies about the paranormal ever made. Sure, there had been films about ghosts and hauntings before, but many of these tended to be set in remote, antiquated locations such as spooky old mansions and abandoned homes on a hill. More than even the well-regarded visual effects, the biggest innovation of "Poltergeist" is its quintessentially American suburban setting, the inherent message being that ghosts aren't merely sequestered in places that average people would never dare go; instead, they exist right next to us.
Released during the busy summer of '82, "Poltergeist" more than held its own, making $121.7 million over a $10.7 million budget.

The Vista Theatre hosted two premieres on Tuesday night — the first was for Thanksgiving, Eli Roth’s latest horror offering based on the fake trailer he created for the 2007 film Grindhouse. The second was for the movie house itself, which held its first premiere since Quentin Tarantino purchased the single-screen theater in 2021 and reopened it this past weekend.
Roth shared what it meant that his film was the first premiere at his close friend’s theater, noting, “It’s a really meaningful moment. Quentin’s been telling me about the Vista for years, and he bought it and he’s been refurbishing it. It’s going to be 35 [mm] only, and then when the timing worked out that the first movie was going to be Thanksgiving, I just thought, this is poetic. This is so beautiful. Only Quentin could do this; he’s more than a friend, he’s a brother...

In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.
Not that a film like "She Dies Tomorrow" was a threat to, say, a Marvel film. Seimetz constructed an assertively sad meditation full of weeping, doubt, death, and fear. It imagines a world where depression is contagious and how humans' natural propensity toward utter emotional emptiness ultimately informs and colors every aspect of our lives.

HBO has canceled "The Idol" - created by Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim - after one season. On Aug. 28, a spokesperson for HBO confirmed the news to Popsugar, saying, "'The Idol' was one of HBO's most provocative original programs, and we're pleased by the strong audience response. The World Class Sinner is heading to an early grave. “The Idol,” Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s controversial HBO drama has been canceled after just one season, IndieWire has confirmed.
“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to IndieWire. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
The news comes almost two months after the show’s one-and-only season, which premiered in June, wrapped after five controversy-ridden episodes. But even before it premiered, Levinson and Tesfaye’s series about the romance between a pop star and a cult leader received considerable attention, due to several allegations of a troubled development process.

The Idol is one and done at HBO.
The controversial series from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, will not be returning for a second season.
It’s not a huge surprise given the critical and commercial reception of the show, which starred Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp. It also came after extensive reshoots following the departure of director Amy Seimetz, as revealed by Deadline in April 2022, and a reduced order taking its total number of episodes to five.
Some of the cast did mention the possibility of a second season during interviews, though show insiders said that creators did not come into the production process with a plan for a multi-season arc.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who played one of the managers of Depp’s pop star Jocelyn, previously said that the first season was left intentionally open-ended for the possibility of a second.

Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney is the latest actress to publicly defend “Euphoria” and “The Idol” creator Sam Levinson against online backlash.
Speaking to Variety, Sweeney – who was an Emmy nominee last year for “Euphoria” – suggested that if the HBO drama was as toxic as some online reports suggest, she and other actresses on the show would speak out.
“You have me, you have [Zendaya], you have all of these very strongminded, independent women. If we didn’t feel comfortable with something, or we saw something we didn’t like, we’d all speak up,” she told the publication. “It’s hard to see someone completely trashed by the public and the media when no one’s actually there. We are there, and clearly, we’re still working on the show, and we’re still supportive.”

The Weeknd has another record to add to his trophy shelf.
Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, 33, has achieved the prestigious title of the highest-grossing tour for a Black musician with his After Hours Till Dawn tour, a record held by the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson’s 1987 Bad tour for almost 35 years.
The Weeknd’s tour began in 2022 and has already made a killing, generating more than $350 million in revenue. Jackson’s tour managed to gross a wildly impressive $311 million after adjusting for inflation, per Hot New Hip Hop.

Jane Adams is calling out the critics of “The Idol” for refusing to listen to its stars.
The HBO star responded to the criticism surrounding the controversial show in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, citing the lack of conversation with the actual people involved.
“What is amazing to me is no one’s listening—I’ve not seen that before in all my days, such a dogged ‘We refuse to change the narrative,’” Adams said. “I especially want to say to all the feminists, ‘Go f–k yourself.’ All these women that I’m working with are talking about their experience and you’re not listening. You’re not listening!”

Jane Adams Slams ‘The Idol’ Nudity Backlash and Toxic Set Allegations: Feminists, ‘Go F*** Yourself’
The controversy surrounding “The Idol” continues even after the five-episode season concluded.
Jane Adams, who portrays Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) label executive, told Vanity Fair that the rumors of a toxic set are unfounded, especially after female stars like Depp and Da’Vine Joy Randolph have shut down claims of misogyny from series creators Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye.

Adams went on to say that she doesn’t care if the show offended people.

HBO’s controversial series “The Idol” ended on Sunday night with a bit of a twist. After spending four episodes convincing the audience that shady pimp and club owner Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) was successfully indoctrinating global pop superstar Joclyn (Lily-Rose Depp) into his wannabe cult, the Sam Levinson series revealed the opposite. It was Joclyn who was in charge of their relationship the entire time, using Tedros to help her break out of a creative rut – all while making Tedros think he was the one in control.
But the subversion of expectations – “The Idol” ends its first (final?) season with Joclyn and Tedros together again but with the power dynamics of their union flipped – didn’t change the narrative surrounding the polarizing show. “‘The Idol’ has concluded its five-episode run, and there’s one question I can’t help but ask: What was the point of all of that?...

Tucked within a dull, dumbfounding finale, there’s one line that, I think, speaks to the general point “The Idol” has been trying to make. Thankfully, it’s shared by the loudest person in the room. Andrew Finkelstein hasn’t been around much. The Live Nation rep played with demented backroom-Hollywood energy by Eli Roth popped up in the premiere, as part of the executive class concerned that Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) personal crisis might impact her professional ambitions/their bottom lines. Later, he would either be heard on the phone, threatening to cancel the tour, or seen at his office, threatening to cancel the tour, usually peppering the conversation with curse words and comments so gross they were obviously only included to provoke further controversy. Nevertheless, the verbose boss held the keys to the kingdom, and he just kept dangling them...

We come not to praise The Idol, but to bury it. That is assuming Sunday’s fifth episode is the last gasp for the widely scorned HBO series. The show’s creative team claims a five-episode season was the plan all along, scathing criticism be damned; HBO has not come out and said the series has been cancelled. But this doesn’t feel like it’s leading to a back-by-popular-demand kind of situation.

Goodbye, angels.
“The Idol” — or at least its first season — came to a conclusion after five episodes on Sunday night, but not without the usual dose of darkly sexual ups and downs for its jewel-eyed, rat-tailed stars.
Titled “Jocelyn Forever,” the episode begins with Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) at her home, working on a song with prolific hip-hop producer Mike Dean (played by himself). As she sings lyrics Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) prompted her to write — “My kinda love / Force me, choke me ’till I pass out” — it becomes clear that the ex-pimp’s coke habit has caught up to him. Sweating, with his hair beginning to fall out of his famous rat-tail, he interrupts the jam session to give some notes. Jocelyn lets him know he isn’t welcome to do that anymore.
“You’re gonna kick out your only source of inspiration?” Tedros jeers. Jocelyn shoots back, “I...

“The Idol” finale is finally here and the HBO drama held onto its title as the most scandalous show of the summer until the very end.
Episode 4 of the Sam Levinson-created show left off with a grim outlook for Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) after the pop star gave her backup dancer and so-called friend Dyanne (Jennie Kim) the green light to take Jocelyn’s song, “World Class Sinner,” as her own. If her carefully planned comeback getting destroyed wasn’t enough, her personal life was also left in the toilet after learning that Dyanne and Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) previously knew each other and had a relationship before Jocelyn and Tedros met.
Seeking revenge, Jocelyn called up her ex-boyfriend, Rob, to come to her house, who succeeded in making Tedros jealous. Jocelyn’s plan backfired, of course, when Tedros...

Well, this is a bit of a shocker.
Whether you love it, hate it, or are watching because you can't look away, The Idol Season 1 has been the topic of the conversation in recent weeks.
Initially set for a seven-episode freshman season, the HBO drama has now been confirmed to end with The Idol Season 1 Episode 5, which is set to air on Sunday at 9 p.m. on the premium cabler and streaming sibling Max.
The decision is a surprise, especially because the series has not been marketed as a five-episode run, leading to questions about what happened to the rest of the footage.
According to TV Line, the series' runtime was changed after Sam Levinson took creative control and made some significant changes.
"The season ended up being five episodes when it was all said and done after Sam [Levinson] took over and made significant changes. The story only ended...

The Idol is heading towards its season finale.
It has emerged that the HBO drama will consist of five episodes in its first season with the season finale airing on Sunday July 2.
This comes after it was originally believed to have received a six episode order, in November 2021, before the “creative changes” that Deadline revealed last year including the departure of original director Amy Seimetz.
Co-created by Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, The Idol follows pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, who is determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America after a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the fourth episode of HBO’s “The Idol,” titled “Stars Belong to the World,” now streaming on Max.

Hong Chau will be looking to round off a pretty good year by snagging her first-ever Emmy nomination. This would come after she claimed her first Oscar bid, which came in Best Supporting Actress for “The Whale.” That was for her moving performance opposite Brendan Fraser in Darren Aronofsky‘s film. But, now, on the TV side of things, she will be competing for Best Comedy Guest Actress for Rian Johnson‘s “Poker Face.”
The Peacock episodic murder-mystery show follows Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, a young woman who goes on the run from a casino following a suspicious death. On her journey, she encounters various, mysterious new cases and uses her unbelievable ability to figure out if somebody is lying to help solve the murder. The show follows a case-of-the-week format and introduces new characters and guest actors every week, who are all a treat to watch. And none more so than Chau.

HBO shows tend to hit the headlines for all the right reasons, but something about The Idol keeps courting controversy.
The latest drama stems from a Page Six report stating that the show is not expected to return to HBO.
"This was never meant to be a long-running show, it was always … a limited series," a source told the gossip site, adding that the door is not 100 percent closed.
"The door is definitely still open — it's definitely not a decision [yet]."
"At this point, this is normal in our process … we're only two episodes in."
The outlet added that backlash towards a controversial sex scene with Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye and series star Lily-Rose Depp triggered the rapper's decision to veto a second season.
In a rare move, HBO released a statement via its social media channels, saying that outlets have "misreported" the show's future.

The internet loves to hate “The Idol,” but that doesn’t mean the show’s future has been set in stone. HBO has denied a report from Page Six claiming that Sam Levinson and The Weeknd’s controversial drama series will not return for a second season.

The buzz surrounding HBO’s controversial new series The Idol might just be working to its benefit.
Episode 2 aired on Sunday night, drawing about 800,000 total viewers across Max and linear HBO telecasts. That’s a slight dip from last week’s premiere audience of 913,000. According to HBO, viewing held steady on Max and the dip in viewers came via linear.
That makes sense, considering the series is likely targeting a younger demographic than the typical linear television viewer. Nielsen reports that The Idol viewers on Max are tracking 21 years younger than viewers via the HBO channel, a wider disparity than the typical HBO drama.
As predicted, viewing for the premiere episode has significantly increased since the episode aired. It has now surpassed 3.6M viewers in its first week on the service, which HBO says outpaces the series premieres for both The White Lotus (3M in 2021) and Euphoria (3.3M in 2019) in the same time period.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Idol” Episode 2, “Double Fantasy.”]
Nikki (Jane Adams) doesn’t give the impression she likes to be “summoned.” Wearily walking through her client’s mansion, passing two framed records that are just lying against the barren wall, Nikki plops down next to her fellow handlers and immediately starts complaining: Why would Jocelyn (Lily Rose-Depp) change her single? “What about the sound we created for her?” Her mom’s dead? Who cares! “Mothers die.”
Meanwhile, Jocelyn is waiting upstairs. Nervous over the remix she made with Tedros Tedros (Able “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), she texts him, looking for a little support before facing the jackals downstairs. “Tried u earlier,” she types. “Call u after,” she concedes.
The version of “World Class Sinner” her team hears is hardly high-art. Extra breathy and with a jagged melody, it’s less suited for a car stereo or a night club than to privately play while...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the second episode of HBO’s “The Idol,” titled “Double Fantasy,” now streaming on Max.
The sophomore episode of “The Idol” has arrived, and following last week’s controversial and divisive series premiere, the stakes within the show have been raised. Troubled pop phenom Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) has a tortured video shoot, and then later invites her love interest, cult leader Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) and some of his followers to her house for a night of debauchery. The sex, drugs and industry drama is amped up compared to the first episode in an hour of television sure to start online discourse.
This episode is difficult to watch without considering reports of behind-the-scenes drama that nearly derailed the show. Notably, director Amy Seimetz left the series in April 2022 amid reshoots and shifts in creative direction, including a report that Tesfaye believed that...

Note: This article contains spoilers from “The Idol” Episode 2
Last week, “The Idol” held true to its Cannes reputation and shocked HBO viewers as much it shocked those at the film festival. And this week’s episode was even more scandalous.
From “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim comes HBO’s latest Sunday night drama. “The Idol” follows a pop idol by the name of Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) whose career is in the decline after a recent nervous breakdown. Her desperation to regain fame leads her into the arms of Tedros (Tesfaye), a self-help guru and modern-day cult leader.
The first two episodes of the series debuted at Cannes to mixed reviews. Many called out its use of sex and nudity, criticizing the series for falling into male fantasies. But the drama was already being heavily scrutinized well before its premiere. When it wasn’t...

“I’ll Show You Mine” follows an author who has made a career by examining her own trauma as she sits down to interview her beguiling pansexual nephew Nick for a new book about his history as a model. Over the course of a weekend, the two challenge each other to confront and reveal their buried secrets.
“‘I’ll Show You Mine’ was made to engage in an entertaining way with universal themes–sexuality, the effects of trauma, and the need to release the shame that holds us back. It’s a deeply hopeful film that I think will really resonate with audiences and I just couldn’t be more excited...
