Musical episodes of TV shows weren’t invented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, nor by Xena: Warrior Princess either. But it was Xena that came up with a way of doing musical episodes that was incredibly effective, and Buffy that perfected it, producing a musical that has been a touchstone for TV ever since.
Some TV shows are designed to be a musical every week, of course, from Glee to Schmigadoon! to Flight of the Conchords. But there is also a fairly long-standing tradition of non-musical shows including musical episodes from time to time.
It might seem like having characters who do not normally sing randomly burst into song would be restricted to science fiction and fantasy, in which an invented reason can be provided for the singing, but plenty of non-sci fi and fantasy shows have done musicals either by making the whole thing take place inside someone’s...

Many filmmakers making their feature debut opt to tell a story inspired — at least in part — by their life. Although this has brought about some incredible films, others feel like complete ego trips. Tracie Laymon’s Bob Trevino Likes It is uncharacteristically humble for this genre, telling its story in a way that perfectly balances humor and humanity, allowing it to overcome its somewhat simplistic storytelling and be genuinely moving.
The film follows a young woman who finds an unexpected connection on Facebook with a man sharing her father’s name after falling out with her real father. Although this sounds like it could make a stranger-than-fiction story, Laymon’s approach doesn’t lean into this absurdity. Instead, it takes the form of a mostly low-key, pretty maudlin, but very effective indie dramedy.

Both distributors have committed to theatrical releases in the territories. Kaleidoscope will also take over rest of world sales. The film is set to have additional screenings at SXSW this weekend.
The film puts a spotlight on the late, swashbuckling CNN combat camerawoman, Margaret Moth, who risked it all to put the viewer inside the conflict. When a fateful injury got in the way of her appetite for danger and adrenaline, she had a decision to make about her career and survival.

Margaret Moth in Never Look Away
Lucy Lawless steps behind the camera for the first time as a director to tell the story of fellow New Zealander, Margaret Moth, who passed away in March 2010. A trailblazing combat camerawoman who worked for CNN, Moth’s images from the frontlines of conflicts including Desert Storm and the Bosnian War, confronted people in their homes with the abject reality of war. Her footage not only caught historic moments but framed the violent and merciless propensity of human beings to dehumanise others.
Moth herself was a contradictory figure, living a carefree and hedonistic lifestyle of sex, drugs and thrill-seeking, whose life was transformed after she was shot by a sniper’s bullet in Sarajevo. Never Look Away charts her endurance against adversity, peeling away the layers of her life to offer an understanding of its enigmatic subject.

In an exclusive uInterview, Lucy Lawless discusses her new documentary Never Look Away, which tells the story of CNN correspondent Margaret Moth, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
“I just love bad girls, and she was the baddest,” Lawless said about Moth. “There’s so much stuff that I couldn’t even fit in this film that I would have loved to explore if I had the time, but she’s truly raging and iconic and I find it inspirational. We are all coloring inside the lines, and people like her are bursting with color and life.”
Lawless, known for her role as Xena: The Warrior Princess, said it took her a long time to understand the famous camerawoman, who was known for her work in various combat zones.
“I think for Margaret, unless she was at the burning cold face of history and life and intensity, that she didn’t fit in.

Documentary lovers are digesting the announcement of the Sundance nonfiction lineup, a slate of films certain to factor in awards conversation into next Oscar season.
“I think there’s a lot of discoveries in there,” Sundance Senior Nonfiction Programmer Basil Tsiokos says of the lineup revealed on Wednesday. “It’s a nice blend of new filmmakers and alumni, lots of different kinds of approaches to filmmaking… There’s biodocs, but there’s also films that are political. There’s films that are dealing with the environment. There’s lots of other things happening, so it’s a nice mix we think.”
Will Ferrell and Harper Steele ‘in Will & Harper’
Among the most eye-popping titles are Will & Harper, Josh Greenbaum’s nonfiction road movie about comedian Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, his close friend of 30 years who came out as trans. “The two decide to embark on a cross-country...

How the heck do you rank the "Evil Dead" movies?
No horror franchise has taken bigger swings, with entries ranging from brutal, unrelenting horror to straight-up goofball slapstick. No horror franchise has proven more consistent in its inconsistency, with each entry showcasing an anarchic streak a mile wide. If an "Evil Dead" movie isn't trying to startle you out of your skin with transgressive intensity, it's trying to make you giggle like a loon. And sometimes, it tries to make you giggle like a loon using that transgressive intensity. Director Sam Raimi made it clear with his original three movies that there are no hard and fast rules in this universe -- and other filmmakers have gleefully stepped in and followed suit. The only thing that truly defines an "Evil Dead" movie is that it needs to be extreme in one way or another.

It was a time of myth and legend. A time of ancient gods. It was the ‘90s and some of the biggest shows on TV were Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, starring Kevin Sorbo, and its spinoff Xena: Warrior Princess, starring Lucy Lawless. Following the exploits of heroes loosely inspired by Greco-Roman mythology, both series ran for six seasons in syndication and were so popular that other companies in the entertainment industry were looking to cash in.
One of them was Saban Entertainment, most famous for creating the mega hit Power Rangers. According to longtime Saban Entertainment producer Robert Hughes, who spoke to this author in 2013 about his time working at Saban, the company was intrigued by the idea of doing a “juvenile version” of Hercules and Xena. The hope was that a series could be developed that was different enough but strongly reminiscent of those shows. The problem was that...

Liam McIntyre as Spartacus
Starz is ready to return to the world of gladiators with a new chapter in the Spartacus franchise. Spartacus series creator Steven S. DeKnight is also diving back into ancient Rome as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the new series.
“It’s such an incredible honor to be invited to return to the world of Spartacus and to be met with unbridled creative support from my colleagues at Starz and Lionsgate,” said Steven S. DeKnight. “Together we are crafting something truly unique and unusual for the next chapter in this epic story.”
DeKnight took to Twitter to confirm he’s currently writing the pilot.
Spartacus aired for four seasons on the network, kicking off in 2010 with Spartacus: Blood and Sand starring Andy Whitfield in the title role. Tragically, Whitfield passed away in September 2011 of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Liam McIntyre took over the role beginning in season two.

Everyone, get out your swords and sandals because we're heading back to the arena! Starz has just announced that it is currently developing a new "Spartacus" series! Forgive the excessive use of exclamation points, but I loved every minute of this show from the first moment to the last, including the prequel "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena."
The first season of the series was entitled "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and debuted in 2010. Before the second season, star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leading to the prequel to give him time to recover. Sadly, he passed away, and the role was recast with Liam McIntyre for season 2, "Spartacus: Vengeance" and season 3, "Spartacus: War of the Damned."
The show was, as our title says, very sexy. Still, it was also a compelling drama about the titular Thracian gladiator who led a revolt of enslaved people against the Roman empire.

Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight is expanding the franchise once again with a new series currently in development at Starz. DeKnight will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the as-yet-untitled project.
The next chapter will explore uncharted territory and new journeys of the original series’ iconic characters. In the aftermath of the defeat of Spartacus and his rebel army in the series finale, the new drama will depict a new tale of treachery, deceit, and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.
“It’s such an incredible honor to be invited to return to the world of Spartacus and to be met with unbridled creative support from my colleagues at Starz and Lionsgate,” said DeKnight in a statement. “Together we are crafting something truly unique and unusual for the next chapter in this epic story.”

Like many modern TV dramas, the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" series featured a large cast of regular, recurring, and continuing characters. Such shows are almost an embarrassment of riches, so much so that determining who's a "main character" is tricky business, especially when narrowing that down to roughly 14 names.
For example, Doc Cottle's a fantastic personality, but he's never explored or fleshed out. Anastasia "Dee" Dualla is a constant presence but not given much personality. Romo Lampkin's fascinating but doesn't play as major a role as others. And Sam Anders has a frak-ton of screen time and is key to the finale of the series, but he just doesn't pop the way so many other characters do.
Are the main characters the ones performed by the stars listed in the opening titles? What about those who played multiple roles? Are main characters determined by screen time? Importance to the main story arcs?...

"Cobra Kai" is such a phenomenon that when its initial streaming service, YouTube Red, crashed and burned, Netflix swooped in with the renewal. What started as a show subverting the "Karate Kid" franchise by picking up the story from the point of view of middle-aged former villain Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), transformed over five seasons into a sprawling mini-epic involving Lawrence, former archrival Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), their families, a whole new generation of karate students, and the return of several old enemies and allies who cannot let the past go.
Once you've binged it multiple times, what next? Where else can you get the thrill of '80s heroes dealing with toxic masculinity and youthful characters supplanting them, bad guys realizing they're actually good, and lots of telenovela-level twists? Glad you asked. For some, or even all, of those TV show qualities elsewhere on your control panel, check out...

Catching up with a cultural icon is always exciting, but catching up with Lucy Lawless from her country home takes the cake.
We talked with Lucy about My Life Is Murder Season 3, which premieres today on Acorn TV. Our zoom chat included expansive views of her lovely home (where she finally has wireless), and a peek at her gorgeous dog enjoying the day.
Lucy is excited about the latest season of My Life Is Murder, with good reason. She's still filming in her hometown of Auckland, and it thrills her to share more of it with her fans.
"When people want to see New Zealand, they never think about Auckland. It's just sort of the port that you go into, and everybody scrams to more well-known places," Lucy said.
"But, my city is beautiful and vibrant and fun. You just got to look into the community some. The theater's amazing.
