A London coroner’s office has concluded Sinéad O’Connor died this past July from natural causes.
As reported by multiple outlets, the coroner issued a statement on Tuesday (January 9th) saying, “Ms. O’Connor died of natural causes.” The coroner added they had “therefore ceased their involvement in her death.”
O’Connor, 56, was found dead at her London flat last July. At the time, the Metropolitan Police said the Irish singer’s death was not being treated as suspicious and added a coroner would conduct an autopsy.
Weeks before her death, O’Connor revealed on her Facebook page that she had moved back to London and was finishing a new album planned for release in 2024. O’Connor’s final album, I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, arrived in 2014. More recently, she shared her memoir, Rememberings, in 2021.

“Deep in the unexplored reaches of the dungeon, a corpse is discovered—one that shouldn't exist. After Iarumas is resurrected, his memories of life before death are gone, and he spends his days delving into the dungeon to retrieve the bodies of dead adventurers. Can they be revived as well? Or will God reduce them to piles of ash on the altar? Either way, Iarumas collects his finder's fee.” (Yen Press)

Ariana Grande, Guillermo del Toro, Padma Lakshmi, Roxane Gay, Gabrielle Union, Sandra Cisneros, Amanda Gorman, Margaret Cho and Ron Perlman are among the signatories of an open letter calling on creative communities in Hollywood and beyond to leverage their voices to stop book bans.
Upwards of 175 actors, musicians, authors, comedians, reality stars, models, media personalities, academics, activists and more have signed the open letter spearheaded by Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton and published Tuesday via public advocacy organization and political action committee MoveOn Political Action.

The letter encourages signatories and readers to address challenges at the local level across U.S. school districts, while calling out book bans as “restrictive behavior” that is “antithetical to free speech and expression.” It also underscores the “chilling effect” these bans can have “on the broader creative field.”

A Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds gig in Saratoga Springs, New York on Saturday was abruptly stopped early due to reports of a bomb threat.
Via Billboard, after opening act Metric and co-headliner Garbage finished their sets, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center displayed an emergency message stating the venue needed to be completely evacuated because of “circumstances beyond our control.” The evacuation was complete before Gallagher and company were able to perform.
“We have no idea what happened tonight,” Garbage wrote on Twitter. “We were just all evacuated and we were concerned for everyone !!! I’m sorry we have no real information. We were just told there was an emergency evacuation!!!!”
Sunday Morning, the NY State Park Police clarified the cause for evacuation: “Out of an abundance of caution, the concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center was suspended at 9:40 pm and concert attendees were evacuated without incident,” reads a statement on Facebook.

One year since they released Formentera, Metric have announced the album’s follow-up, Formentera II. The LP arrives October 13th via Metric Music International/Thirty Tigers, while lead single “Just the Once” is out now.
Metric laid down the initial recordings for Formentera II during the pandemic at the band’s Main Street Studios in Toronto before putting the finishing touches on the project earlier this year, at Motorbass Studios in Paris. Guitarist Jimmy Shaw and frequent collaborators Liam O’Neil and Gus van Go returned to handle engineering and production. The album will be available on CD as well as marble blue vinyl and sea glass blue vinyl. Even better, both Formentera and Formentera II will come on an opaque white double vinyl. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Featuring strings composed and arranged by Drew Jureka (Dua Lipa) and mixing by Stuart White (Beyoncé), Metric singer Emily Haines describes “Just the Once” as “regret disco.

Garbage have shared their Record Store Day EP Witness to Your Love on digital platforms. It’s highlighted by their version of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ 1986 classic “Cities in Dust.”
While remaining mostly true to the original, Garbage put a heavier emphasis on guitars and percussion as Shirley Manson puts her own spin on Siouxsie Sioux’s lyrics with soaring vocals. Stream the track and watch the video for the original version below.
“Cities in Dust” was the lead single for Siouxsie and the Banshees’ seventh studio album, Tinderbox. A previous cover of the song by Everlove was featured in a trailer for Season 4 of Game of Thrones.
Witness to Your Love includes the eponymous 2008 rarity along with two previously unreleased tracks from the sessions for Garbage’s 2021 album, No Gods, No Masters. Listen to the full EP below.

This article contains spoilers through the latest episode of Yellowjackets
Yellowjackets has been doing deep-cut needledrops since before Stranger Things season 4 made it cool. While the series certainly leans into the late ’90s setting of the plane crash flashbacks for much of its music (as it should), the present day timeline keeps the series from feeling too limited in its scope of song choices. Yellowjackets is one of the few shows that could pull off having songs from Papa Roach and Sharon Van Etten in the same episode without it being too distracting. Instead, this eclectic mix of music shows that the music supervisor and showrunners know how important the right song is to the story.
Yellowjackets may cover heavy things like trauma and cannibalism, but that doesn’t mean that its soundtrack can’t be full of bops and bangers, including the title sequence song “No Return” by Anna Waronker and Craig Wedren.

Consequence, Modern Drummer, and Yurt Rock are on a quest for the next great funk musician. We asked aspiring funk artists to download our free Clyde Stubblefield drum loop pack and use the loops to produce a completely original song for our Who’s Got the Funk? contest. We received dozens of entries, and after listening to all of the amazing work, we’ve narrowed it down to our four finalists.
Whether they used one, two, or all three of the Stubblefield loops, each of our finalists injected their own sound, feel, and funk into their work. There’s the funky guitar instrumental with a hint of country dubbed “Electric Bath Attendant” by Dave Macki, the horn-heavy cut featuring samples of Stubblefield’s own voice called “I Feel the Funk” by Matt The Katt, the dynamic and electric ode “Who’s Clyde?” by We Are Neurotic, and the hip-hop influenced...

This post contains spoilers for the second season of "Yellowjackets."
One of the things you can't deny about Showtime's runaway hit "Yellowjackets" is that it's got a killer soundtrack. Even before we got to hear its catchy theme song from Anna Waronker and Craig Wedren, the pilot episode set up one of the show's recurring elements: a soundtrack that consists of both '90s classics and deep cuts. The show's second season is no different — after all, they are still fighting for survival during the late '90s portion of the show.
Even if this isn't taken into consideration, the 1990s were a great time for music, as evidenced throughout "Yellowjackets." If you weren't privy to living through the '90s, some of these songs might be delighting your ears for the very first time, and as such, might be too entranced to open your Shazam app to ask, "what song is playing?...

This post contains spoilers for the first episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
The wait is over, winter has come, and "Yellowjackets" is back for a second season! Travis and Nat are still hunting for food, but now with the added perk of being "blessed" by Lottie before each venture into the wilderness. She puts ashes in their hands, smudges smoke around them, offers a bit of bloodletting, and some non-descript tea. Is Lottie actually supernatural or just dabbling in "teen girl discovers vague witchcraft 101?" The jury is still out, but she does draw the mysterious symbol in the fogged-up windows, so regardless of what anyone else believes, Lottie is all-in on the dead man's cabin superstitions.
In a shocking development, the episode does a brief flash forward to 1998, after the rescue. It seems that after the team was found, Lottie completely shut down. She stares off in silence as her parents...

This week’s question: What is the best TV show — former or current — that handles mental illness well?
Joyce Eng (@joyceeng61), TVGuide.com
“Bojack Horseman,” especially Season 4, is almost peerless when it comes to a raw, honest portrayal of mental health. His depression and anxiety aren’t deployed as plot devices like we’ve seen plenty of times elsewhere; they’re just part of him and none of it is rubbed in your face. He’s allowed to be, break down, self-destruct, and the show never offers quick fixes or easy answers. “Stupid Piece of Sh*t” is a brutal depiction, even if you don’t suffer from depression or anxiety,...

In 2017, “She’s Gotta Have It” may have more to say about men than women. Though primarily focused on the same independent woman from Spike Lee’s 1986 feature film — the sexually liberated Nola Darling, played here by DeWanda Wise — the series, directed in its entirety by Lee, often feels more focused on correcting men’s behavior than celebrating the singular human being at its core.
That’s not a damning issue, only a nagging one. Many, if not all, of the messages within Lee’s 10 episodes are valuable, insightful, and rarely so thoroughly discussed via a serialized narrative — not to mention told from a proudly black perspective. While the overriding educational value can lead to an academic disconnection at times, Lee’s revisitation is as singular and powerful today as it was 30 years ago.

Starbucks flexed its creative muscles this week by announcing a new drink: The Unicorn Frappuccino, which they created to be “Instagrammable,” so we know they invent words as well as they do sugary death drinks. Or, as Stephen Colbert called the concoction on “The Late Show” last night: “A sugary affront to God.”
The creators of the Pumpkin Spice Latte released their new drink Wednesday to cries from baristas begging customers not to order it. Ever the contrarian, Colbert braved the sugar and spice and everything nice to take a sip on live television. This week’s question: Does the success of “This Is Us” prove that broadcast TV is still relevant in creating prestige dramas (loosely defined through awareness, ratings, awards, etc.)?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
I’m not sure many critics consider “This is Us” a so-called “prestige” television drama, even now. The fact remains that many shows which are more often hailed as prestige dramas – FX’s “Atlanta,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul” – are darker, more explicit and more challenging to viewers than most everything on network TV. “This Is Us” does signal to network TV types that more complex storytelling can still be embraced by...

Essentially “White Privilege: The Movie,” Elizabeth Wood’s fire-breathing debut is an adrenalized shot of ecstasy and entitlement, a fully committed cautionary tale that’s able to follow through on its premise because — like the remarkable young actress who plays its heroine — the film is unafraid of being utterly loathsome. And make no mistake, while the madness of her misadventures is captivating from start to finish, you will hate the titular “white girl.” But it’s what Wood and her star do with that hate that makes their collaboration special, these two rising super talents manipulating your vitriol with the grace of a contortionist and the recklessness of a tornado.

The X-Files‘ Dana Scully may not be immortal, but wouldn’t it have been nice if her mother were?
As many X-‘Philes guessed — and TVLine feared — Margaret Scully dies in the revival’s fourth hour, her death a painful tearing-away of Dana’s one constant: No matter what insanity Mulder was up to from week to week during the original run, Mama Scully always had a gripping hug and some nonsense-free advice for her only remaining daughter. She was the voice of reason when a delusional Dana pulled her gun in “Wetwired.” She was a bedside regular throughout her daughter’s cancer arc.

Tracy Morgan returned to Saturday Night Live this past weekend for the first time since his debilitating car accident, and it was a glorious thing to behold. Even beyond seeing the former SNL star do comedy again — surrounded at one point, poignantly, by his old 30 Rock castmates — the episode as a whole was a reminder that life is short, and maybe it's better to spend whatever TV time we have left watching people we already know we like. And that includes you, Larry David, who kicked off the show with...

It's the invisible car one! We look back at Pierce Brosnan's final outing as James Bond - it's Die Another Day...
Practically a curse for some this one, and now a contender for Worst Bond Ever. This is a bit harsh: Die Another Day doesn’t deserve the opprobrium heaped upon it. Not to say it’s good; just not utterly irredeemable. Perhaps its greatest problem is tonal. For a while it seems we might get the hard-hitting Bond that Pierce Brosnan so deserved; then suddenly we’re in an ice palace and Bond’s borrowed a car from Harry Potter. The second half of the film is utterly ludicrous but fun if you go along for the (invisible) ride; alas, the first half promised something far more intriguing. It wouldn’t be completely accurate to say it begins as Licence To Kill and ends as Moonraker; but nor is it totally unfair.

Rock on! Evan Rachel Wood sported two-tone hair during her rock performance at the An Evening With Women Benefiting the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center on Saturday, May 10, hosted by Linda Perry. While the True Blood alum is no stranger to styling her short 'do in surprising ways (see: her retro waves at the 2014 Oscars), the dip dyed look of blonde strands with black tips is a new style—perfect for her performance of hits by Garbage and Radiohead at the event. Gone are the days of Furbys, Tamagotchis and Snes consoles – in are iPhones, Snapchat and Facebook. Trying to explain the beauty of a VHS to a kid with a Netflix account at the age of 2 now is going to be a tricky task, but one we’re gonna have to attempt one day.
The year of Nirvana: music, of course, was better. For one, girls on the radio had more fire and brimstone about them. Not only did we have L7, Garbage, and Hole pumping out 90s riot grrl-grunge: the mainstream airwaves had double the soul and substance we have today.
The Top 40 around 1997 had Natalie Imbruglia singing about the sky being Torn, and the Fugees Killing It Softly. Let’s compare this week’s chart-toppers: Little Mix doing a painful cover of Word Up and a song by The Chainsmoker called #Selfie. Even The Spice Girls...

Ignoring the 1954 American television version of Casino Royale (and one really should), it’s been 50 years this month since James Bond first graced the silver screen and entered the world’s consciousness and collective hearts. Created by author and former secret service agent Ian Fleming, Bond was a Commander in Her Majesty’s Royal Navy who became a Double-o agent of MI6. He’s a spy who kills and loves without conscience, suave yet deadly. The classic cliché of a man who women want and men want to be. Six actors and twenty-two official movies later, and Bond is still just as popular. And now, Capitol Records and MGM Music have released a new album filled with all sorts of musical goodies from those films.
The two-disc set starts off with The John Barry Orchestra performing the now iconic “James Bond Theme”, which is just as exciting to listen to...

The ordinary girl capable of extraordinary feeling has returned the 007 song to its dangerous basics
It has been the worst-kept secret in pop. But the sheer obviousness of Adele being the right candidate for the Bond theme – that big voice for international audiences to swoon to – sits at odds with the themes we've had in recent years. They have been jagged, awkward things: Jack White and Alicia Keys' Another Way To Die; Chris Cornell's You Know My Name. It's as if they've tried to match Daniel Craig's craggy toughness with earthier sounds. Sadly, those tunes were too forgettable to get any pistols firing.
So back to basics it is, and the easier promise of a ballad-blasting female. But a 90-second clip of Skyfall released online on Tuesday suggests a slightly softer Adele: not the Rolling In The Deep singer who could rival Shirley Bassey for lung power.

20 year-old British actor Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles, August Rush) has signed on to play young Norman Bates in A&E’s upcoming series Bates Motel, which serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock horror classic Psycho. The series will examine the relationship between mother and son and what drives the young-man to become the killer in the classic movie. Vera Farmiga has signed on to play Norma Bates, the domineering that somehow drove her child to kill. Also, has been noted elsewhere, showrunner Carlton Cuse seems to understand that this new series could be interpreted as reworking of the Showtime movie from years ago called Psycho IV: The Beginning. So to distance themselves from that and all it’s continuity issues, it seems the Bates Motel will be more of a reimaging of Norman Bates life; which means now Norman has an older brother named Dylan,...

My favorite part in this how-to guide about having sex with an alien is "Treat tentacles, for example, not as an obstacle, but an opportunity," but it's all pretty great.
Washington Governor Gregoire is set to sign the marriage equality bill today, kicking off the window for opponents to begin gathering signatures for a referendum to block fairness.
The Westminster Kennel Show has replaced Pedigree with Purina as an official sponsor because Pedigree's commercials about pet adoption were too sad for the show. Critics are also claiming that Pedigree's focus on getting homes for mixed breed dogs in shelters conflicts with the purebred mission of Westminster, who denies the charge. Purina's commercials will be full of wagging tails and ball chasing.

When Zap2it caught up with "The Vampire Diaries" star Katerina Graham on set in Atlanta, she was one hundred percent committed to her character, Bonnie -- but when the season wraps, she's got some big plans. "Obviously, when I'm here I'm focused on the show," she says. "I kind of have to wait until I get back into that environment in La to finish everything up."
By "everything," she's referring to her music. After her teaser single "Sassy" and a few covers, including "Cold Hearted Snake" by Paula Abdul and "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage, Kat plans to release an album of original material this fall.
For her last cover song and video, Kat made the bold choice to pay homage to one of her heroes, Janet Jackson, with a mash-up of "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" and "Escapade."

In this week’s Music in the movies column, Glen looks at the compositions of David Arnold, famous for his contemporary Bond themes...
Following on from the recent piece looking at John Barry's musical contribution to the Bond franchise, I thought it would be suitable to look at the man who has taken charge of scoring duties for the modern Bond movies, David Arnold.
Arnold worked extensively for TV, prior to working on movies, and composed a fine score for one of 2010's finest new series in BBC's Sherlock. His first exposure on the big screen came through his work on Young Americans, for which he provided the score as well as co-writing the rather wonderful Play Dead with Bjork, and it was the success of his work here that would bring him to the attention of Roland Emmerich, whom he would go on to work with...

When Zap2it visited the Atlanta set of "The Vampire Diaries" set this December, below-freezing temps and blustery winds had everyone bundling up, so we were happy to get out of the cold, especially with the always warm and welcoming Katerina Graham for company.
It was just a few days after the episode "The Sacrifice" aired, in which Graham's cover of the Garbage classic "Only Happy When It Rains" was used in the soundtrack, so of course, we had to ask about hearing her music on the show.
Graham confirms that she recorded the cover specifically with "Tvd" in mind. "I just wanted to do a song for the show, because I couldn't use anything that was in my actual catalog, because it's all, you know, poppy. It's like a gay disco," she laughs. "I was like 'This isn't going to work. I'll just do a song and submit it,...

There exist two fundamental naysaying truths in this world: 1) If you mention SNL, someone will always say "SNL sucks now. It hasn't been good in years." And 2) If you mention MTV, someone will always say, "MTV sucks now. It hasn't been good in years."
I'm not disagreeing with you (except on SNL because I have the softest of spots for Claaaassic Peg and the Target Lady). MTV does suck. It's just the "now" part that's tripping me up.
Like all of us born in the early to mid '80s, I grew up on MTV. MTV was my formative years. In addition to essentially creating my pre-teen taste in music with Fiona Apple and Garbage, MTV served as a carrier of news to the youth of the world in a time before the Adhd culture had blogs and "The Daily Show" to help them avoid CNN. It gave us gay heroes,...
