Believe it or not, it was way back in 2017 when we first learned of Todd McFarlane's plans to team with Blumhouse for a new R-Rated Spawn movie.
Spider-Man: No Way Home star Jamie Foxx boarded the movie in 2018, with Hawkeye's Jeremy Renner tapped to play Twitch Williams later that same year.
Since then, we've had what's felt like an endless series of updates from McFarlane. He's talked about redesigning the hero, possibly selling the reboot to a streaming service, issues with the screenplay, and even enlisted new writers in Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Captain America: New World Order) and up-and-coming scribe Matthew Mixon.
Despite all of that, the movie is seemingly no closer to becoming a reality.
"There's a script but the writers are, they're not quite sort of satisfied with their own work, which is what all of us creative people are," McFarlane, who once planned...

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

If Heat and The Insider are agreed upon as Michael Mann’s all-time best films, what is the director’s most underrated feature to date? Is it Thief? The Keep? Manhunter? Public Enemies? Nah. There’s only one acceptable answer: 2004’s criminally overlooked nocturnal neo-noir Collateral. Featuring a rare villainous turn by Tom Cruise and a restrained Oscar-nominated performance by Jamie Foxx, the L.A. crime story was the first film in history to utilize the Viper FilmStream High Definition Camera. The digital format that David Fincher would later adopt for use on Zodiac and Benjamin Button. Beyond the cutting-edge technology, the remote locations Mann and his production team gave viewers a much different glimpse of Los Angeles away from the glamor of Hollywood and into the seedy, sinister parts of town rarely seen on the big screen.

Following The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady, people are pitching in names to be featured in a potential new Netflix roast.
Sports journalist Stephen A. Smith recently said that New York Jets Qb Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t be a good subject for the comedy special.
“No, because it’s easy,” Smith told the Associated Press on May 14th during the Disney Upfront presentation in New York City after the reporter suggested Rodgers. “With Tom Brady, I mean, he’s the golden boy. With Aaron Rodgers, even though I love him, a lot of people don’t. Because of that, some people will find it funny [and] some people will be intentionally cruel.”
Smith said that during Brady’s roast, “everybody up there had nothing but reverence and respect” for the retired NFL star.
In the sports realm, Smith pitched basketball stars LeBron James and Steph Curry for a roast.

James Franco portrayed Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films and became the most popular screen adaptation of the character. The son of the notorious Norman Osborn was present in several screen adaptations of the web-slinger. However, one portrayal may have found its way to the fan-favorite list after Franco’s Harry. Fans praised Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for the way it developed Harry.

Now that the upfronts are over, it’s time to hand out much-deserved accolades to those who made this year’s presentations truly unforgettable.
Just remember, everyone’s a winner here. But these folks made the week extra special in New York.
Most Ominous Overture: Kelly Clarkson kicking off a week of upfronts that used to be the sole proprietorship of broadcast networks with tunes like “Whatever Makes You Stronger” and “Since U Been Gone.”
Best Dressed Code Breakers: Men like Bob Iger, Casey Bloys, Mike Hopkins and Rob Wade for appearing without ties. Nothing says we are hemorrhaging money more than a nude neck.
Earworm Award: Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em and Miley Cyrus’ Flowers that were played on a loop.
Best Joke of the Week: “NBC is launching the new adventure Destination X,” said Seth Meyers at the NBCU upfront. “It was originally titled the Linda Yaccarino story.

When Emma Stone, star of Disney’s Cruella and Searchlight’s Poor Things, introduced CEO Bob Iger at the company’s Upfronts presentation this week – the first time that the former TV chief had been on stage at the advertising rodeo in 30 years – it was clear that this is no longer just a TV event.
“To say a lot has changed since 1994 would be an incredible understatement and I’m not just talking about the color of my hair, or my fashion choices,” Iger said.
Stars such as Ryan Reynolds, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal were all highly visible presences across the week to promote their recent and upcoming feature films.

Back In Action: Cameron Diaz Returns After 10 Years Away, Starring In Netflix Comedy With Jamie Foxx
It's been a decade since Cameron Diaz last took to our screens, playing the villainous Miss Hannigan in 2014's Jamie Foxx co-starring Annie. But now Diaz is back in action in, er, Back In Action, Netflix's buzzy new action comedy. The Charlie's Angels and Shrek actor stars alongside Foxx in the film, which sees the pair play suburban parents with a big secret: they used to be spies! Check out the first images from the film below:
Hailing from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon – who's written this one alongside Brendan O’Brien (Bad Neighbours) – Back In Action follows Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx), two seemingly average parents who used to be elite CIA agents. Years after giving up spycraft to start a family however, the couple's low-key suburban life is upended when their cover is blown and they find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage. It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.

1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.
This year was the first time that Netflix and Amazon had physical events in New York during upfronts week (YouTube is now in year three), and they clearly tried to make an impression, gunning for a piece of the $20 billion or so in upfront commitments that used to go exclusively to traditional entertainment companies. Cameron Diaz officially left Hollywood back in 2014, but she has seemingly changed her mind. Back in the day, the actress made her final appearance in a musical comedy film Annie where she starred alongside Jamie Foxx.
Ironically enough, Diaz’s first ever movie in 10 years will show her partnering once again with Foxx in Netflix’s upcoming spy action film.
Cameron Diaz’s big comeback to the screens will be featured in the streaming’s movie Back in Action. The title gives quite a big hint at the main plot twist as the movie follows two former CIA agents Emily and Matt who, after having left their careers beside, decide to start a family.
Realizing that their cover was suddenly blown, the characters are called back in action that roughly thwarted their plans.

A year and a half after Netflix launched an ad-supported tier, the dominant streamer made an upfront pitch — at least in person, in Manhattan — for the first time. There was bragging about the overwhelming statistics of annual hours viewed, a second appearance this week from Jamie Foxx and an open invite for deeper relationships with brands looking to cash in on Netflix’s wildly popular slate. Just ask Mindy Kaling.
“It’s [a series] about a strong woman making it in the male-dominated world of professional basketball,” the writer-producer said of her latest creation for the streamer, Running Point, “and I cannot wait to fill it with commercials about laundry detergent, anti-depression medication, cigarettes, whatever you guys wanna sell … Picture Kate Hudson smoking an e-cigarette.”
“Smoking is so cool,” added Hudson, the series’ star.

A small group of advertisers were serenaded by Metallica’s Master of Puppets (one of those songs that Stranger Things brought to a new generation) as they walked into Netflix’s first in-person Upfront.
Held at Pier 59 Studios in New York, the event had the feeling of an immersive theater experience with a lot of black t-shirt-clad staff handing out drinks.
It comes as the streamer unveiled a number of new series and films including a new Kevin Williamson drama, a bull riding drama starring Tim McGraw and a slew of sports docs as well as more episodes of 3 Body Problem.
Shonda Rhimes kicked things off, talking up her move from ABC to Netflix, saying that she’s doing things that can’t always be done on broadcast television. “The definition of a Netflix show is one that people like to watch,” she said before introducing a sneak peek of Bridgerton’s third season,...

Billy Zane was first cast as Marlon Brando all the way back in 2019 – and things have been pretty much silent for the bulk of the five years that followed. But now, with the movie at this year’s Cannes Market, we finally have a look at Zane as Brando…and wow does he nail it!
Billy Zane’s Marlon Brando is from a pivotal era in the legendary actor’s career, with Waltzing with Brando taking place in the late ‘60s into the early ‘70s, when his work shifted dramatically and he reinvented himself. Appropriately, Zane has entirely reinvented his look to portray Brando. Photos made available courtesy of Deadline fresh out of Cannes show Zane on the island of Tetiaroa, which Brando purchased in the 1960s when he had that “private island money.” Brando took to the region while filming 1962’s Mutiny on the Bounty; other key movies that...

“Love is a gamble and I’m so glad that I’m winnin,” sings Luther Vandross in his 1981 classic “Never Too Much” song with a sentiment that has some extra significance today.
CNN Films and OWN have picked up Dawn Porter’s Sundance Film Festival-debuting Luther: Never Too Much documentary, it was announced today at the Warner Bros Discovery upfront in NYC. The 101-minute film, which counts Colin Firth among its EPs and had Sony Music Entertainment as its sales agent, is set to debut on CNN, OWN and streamer Max next year.
“I’m thrilled to partner again with CNN Films and OWN to bring this film to audiences,” said director Porter on Wednesday. “Luther’s music is timeless, his legacy is unsurpassed, and we can’t wait for all of his fans new and old to experience his brilliance.”

Dawn Porter’s documentary about R&b icon Luther Vandross, “Luther: Never Too Much,” has been acquired by CNN Films in partnership with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), IndieWire can reveal exclusively.
The documentary film, which first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will debut in 2025 first on television on CNN and OWN before it lands on Max.
The acquisition is encouraging news for CNN Films, which back in 2022 under former boss Chris Licht scaled back on its original documentary films. The brand moved away from acquisitions or commissioning projects and opted instead for newsy, quick turnaround docs produced in-house.
But CNN Films also partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios on this fall’s release of “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” so the two acquisitions, both from this year’s Sundance, is a positive step forward for the documentary brand.

Gerard Butler and Den of Thieves director Christian Gudegast could head to the Big Apple as Butler is in talks to join the filmmaker for the comedic action-thriller Empire State. The upcoming project finds Butler and Gudegast re-teaming after joining forces for 2018’s Den of Thieves, Plane, and London Has Fallen.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Empire State focuses on what happens when “the Empire State Building is attacked by a military contractor hellbent on revenge. Navy Seal turned NY firefighter Rhett (Butler) and NYPD Tactical officer Dani (yet to be cast) must put aside their relationship troubles as they work to rescue hostages and save the famous landmark.”
S. Craig Zahler of Bone Tomahawk fame co-wrote the script with Brian Tucker (Secret Invasion).

It’s been almost 10 years since Cameron Diaz’s last film appearance — but we have some good news. With Back in Action, Diaz is, well, back in action alongside her Any Given Sunday and Annie co-star Jamie Foxx. The pair play seemingly average parents with a big secret: They used to be incredibly skilled secret agents. Coaching Little League is a bit of a step down.
Of course, as the title suggests, the couple’s low-key suburban existence is not long for this world. Soon, the two are dragged back into the life they left behind, with explosive results. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the wall-crawler's latest movie to return to theaters as part of Sony's "Spider-Mondays," but how did it fare when compared to its predecessors?
The movie, directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, and Dane DeHaan, earned $500,000. That's not exactly a, well, amazing result, though it is pretty much what we expected for a sequel which isn't anywhere near as revered as its predecessors.
For comparison, The Amazing Spider-Man opened in 466 theaters last week and made $510,000. However, it's still a mighty fall from Spider-Man ($683,000), Spider-Man 2 ($809,000), and Spider-Man 3 ($760,000). Next up is 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
On the plus side, with a $1,100 per theater average, this was a solid showing, albeit one deemed less-than-spectacular overall.
We reviewed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 back in 2014 and it wasn't the most positive verdict.
"With appalling dialogue, slapstick humour, some bizarre aesthetics, and cheesy moments...

Michael Strahan, employee of The Walt Disney Company, logged more minutes than anyone during the Fox upfront on Monday afternoon. But the Fox NFL Sunday analyst wasn’t exactly the headliner. That honor went to his incoming colleague, Tom Brady.
Brady’s official addition to the Fox Sports family was teased throughout the hour-and-a-half pitch for advertisers — “investors,” as Strahan called them — before he finally took the stage for a funny bit that pitted his social media mantra “Lfg” against Fox star Gordon Ramsay’s unrivaled love for the f-word. Gordon implored the network and the advertising community to let Brady be himself and say “fuck” on air when he starts calling football games in the fall. And if anybody can afford to pay FCC fines, it’s Brady.
The host platform of the coming Super Bowl is always particularly giddy to remind the media-buying community of that fact during upfronts.

Lego Masters host Will Arnett kicked off the 2024 Fox Upfront by introducing most of the celebrity players for the new season, including Jon Hamm, Olivia Culpo, Tom Brady and of course Rob Lowe, who he introduced as coming straight from St. Elmo’s Fire.
What else happened at the presentation in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City? Read on.
Michael Strahan and Gordon Ramsay kicked off the show in the theater-in-the-sound setting, and it took all of 20 seconds before Ramsay dropped his first f-bomb. The duo riffed about their pairing as hosts and Ramsay cussed some more before they brought out Jeff Collins, President of Advertising Sales, Marketing and Brand Partnerships. “The Fox portfolio is designed to drive maximum impact for your brand,” he said in a statement that absolutely no one has ever heard before at a NY upfront.

The 2024 Fox upfront presentation featured an appearance by Jamie Foxx in one of his first public appearances since his health crisis last year.
Foxx took to the stage and did his best to crack up the crowd of advertisers, a tall order considering the bar had yet to open. He gave it his all though, showcasing his trademark wit and charisma, reminding the attendees “You got free alcohol after this. Let’s get f—ed up!”
The host of the Fox competition series “Beat Shazam,” Foxx not only took the chance to plug his own series but also Fox shows like “The Masked Singer,” “Animal Control,” and the MLB’s upcoming Negro Leagues tribute game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, for Fox Sports. Failing to get a satisfactory reaction from the crowd for that last programming note, Foxx asked the crowd, “Y’all won’t clap for the Negroes?...

Fox is one of the only broadcast networks not to have its own sister subscription streaming service and CEO Rob Wade believes this is an advantage.
Speaking ahead of its Upfront presentation later today, Wade said, “Our industry has seen a massive market shift. And for us, that translates into massive opportunity.”
“We sit in a unique position, unburdened by the challenges of an SVOD P&l, allowing us to write our own playbook,” he added.
While the company does operate free-streaming service Tubi, Wade was alluding to the challenges that companies such as ABC owner Disney has with Disney+ and Hulu, NBCUniversal has with Peacock and CBS owner Paramount has with Paramount+, now being forced to chase streaming profits after huge spending.
He added that the last several years have been “disruptive”.

The annual celebration of Mom brightened things up at the summer box office, with the first movie to open over $50 million since March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The hopes for the summer box office were almost dashed by the poor showing of season opener “The Fall Guy” last weekend, so fortunately, this weekend didn’t follow suit. Of course, the big winner for the weekend was 20th Century’s franchise sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which came into the weekend with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% Fresh, on par with “The Fall Guy.”
After making $6.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews and $22.2 million on Friday (including those previews), Disney has estimated “Apes” to open with $56.5 million, which is slightly higher than the $56.2 million opening for “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.

Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw Then TV Glow is looking at an estimated $195k+ on 21 screens, a great week-two expansion for the A24 film. The number is driven by a passionate fan base for the gender-bending supernatural thriller that’s been skewing very young, male and heavily LGBTQ+. Will continue a rollout in coming weeks. It’s not clear where the screen count will max out, but so far so good.

Updated: Primates ruled over the North American box office, as “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” collected $58.5 million in its first weekend of release.
That’s ahead of Sunday’s estimates of $56.8 million and enough to score the third-best opening of the year behind “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).
Inaugural sales for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” landed above early projections of $50 million to $55 million and towered over the nonexistent competition. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened roughly even with two of the three prior installments in the rebooted franchise, landing behind only 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (a series-best $72 million) and ahead of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($56.2 million) and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” ($54.8 million).

Fox will keep its Missing Persons Unit on the job for another season.
The network has renewed the drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit for a third season in 2024-25. The series will remain in production after season two wraps, which will bank episodes leading into next season and potentially serve as a hedge against a possible IATSE strike in the summer.
Alert is one of just two dramas Fox has aired in 2023-24 as the network relied heavily on its unscripted and animated rosters, which weren’t affected by last year’s dual strikes. Fox has yet to make a call on the other drama, The Cleaning Lady.

“Alert: Missing Persons Unit” has been renewed for a third season at Fox.
The series is a producedural drama set in the Philadelphia Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit, with each episode featuring a search for a missing person headed by detectives Jason Grant (Scott Caan) and Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez), a former couple whose marriage ended after the disappearance of their son.
Along with Caan and Ramirez, the cast includes Ryan Broussard as Mike Sherman, Adeola Role as Kemi Adebayo, Petey Gibson as C, Gil Bellows as Hollis Braun and Alisha-Marie Ahamed as Wayne Pascal.
Season 2 of “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” is averaging 3.9 multiplatform viewers according to most current data combined from Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers and Fox’s own streaming numbers. That marks a 233% increase from the show’s Live + Same Day performance recorded by Nielsen, indicating that most of the show’s viewership happens on a delay.

Exclusive: Fox has given a Season 3 pickup to Alert: Missing Persons Unit. The renewal of the procedural drama, starring Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez, has been expected.
To make filming more cost-efficient for series producers Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment, Alert will remain in continuous production, segueing from the abbreviated-by-the-strikes second season to Season 3, whose episode count is still Tbd, I hear. There is an additional benefit to filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back — Fox will have fresh episodes of the series in case production is disrupted by an IATSE strike this summer.
There is no word yet on Fox’s other outstanding drama series, The Cleaning Lady. As Deadline has reported, it also is looking good for renewal.

To make filming more cost-efficient for series producers Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment, Alert will remain in continuous production, segueing from the abbreviated-by-the-strikes second season to Season 3, whose episode count is still Tbd, I hear. When Kevin Daniels got a call from his agent’s mom that she’d pitched him for the lead role in a film she was producing, it didn’t take much for him to say “yes.”
“We had a zoom meeting and we kind of laughed and told some jokes and they were like, ‘Hey, you want to come down to Savannah?’ and I was like, ‘I like Savannah. That sounds nice,’” Daniels tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The film was Not Another Church Movie, a spoof comedy of Tyler Perry’s Madea series, written, directed and produced by Johnny Mack (Real Husbands of Hollywood), which is set to hit theaters on May 10. In it, Daniels, stars as the hardworking Taylor Pherry, a man given a mission directly from God (Jamie Foxx) to write a story about his dysfunctional family to save billionaire talk show host Hoprah Windfall’s plummeting TV ratings.

The summer movie season continues with its first direct franchise installment, hoping to revive things after a softer month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Undaunted by the disappointing showing for Universal’s “The Fall Guy” this past weekend, Disney and 20th Century are releasing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the next installment of the popular franchise that began way back in 1968 with the sci-fi classic starring Charlton Heston, into over 3,900 theaters this Friday. This installment takes place hundreds of the years into the future, when the apes have fully taken over from humans, following a young ape named Noah (Owen Teague from “Bloodline”) who goes on a journey to rescue his people from a more dominant ape clan.

When it comes to horror films, there are various categories; there are supernatural horror films, ones that involve cults, psychological horror films, and even slasher films. Some movies also use certain animals as antagonists. The ‘Shark film’ category has always been surprisingly active in the world of cinema, with very big-name actors taking part in it.
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975)
While Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is the most well-known for this sub-division, it would seem that Jamie Foxx’s daughter has a more successful series. The 47 Meters Down duology has recently received quite a promising update.
Jamie Foxx’s Daughter Has One Up On Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is quite a misfit in his filmography. While it perfectly lives up to his reputation as an excellent filmmaker, it still finds it difficult to compete with the rest of his work. Despite this, the movie kicked off an...

The first Planet of the Apes movie under the Disney regime after absorbing Fox hits theaters this weekend with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes poised to do $50M+ domestic, and $130M WW.
After the dull opening of Universal’s Fall Guy, Jesus, God, Saint Mary and Joseph, let’s hope those projections stay steady. Apes plans to pull in the under 35 guy demo in a way that Fall Guy did not. Presales stateside of around $3.1M, in line with what was the 3-day of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ($54.6M), indicate a $50M-plus debut. That start in U.S./Canada isn’t far from the $56.2M opening of Matt Reeves’ 2017 movie, War of the Planet of the Apes, and that would be considered solid. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ has the advantage that it’s opening at a time with less competition than War of the Planet of the Apes.
