With the tsunami of action blockbusters flooding the multiplex, you might think that the movie studios have forgotten that Spring (despite some near ninety-degree days) is the season for romance. So, where are the love stories? Actually, this new one is only streaming, though it’s certainly worthy of a theatrical run, After all, it stars an Oscar-winning actress and its director has made two films that “took home the gold”. Plus it’s based on a popular novel, though in many ways it’s a modern media gloss on a fairy tale. Mind you, the “princess” is unlike any we’ve met as this is more of a May/December pairing (minus the tons of angst of that flick from last year). Like that classic Nat King Cole tune, each of these unlikely lovers is smitten with The Idea Of You.
We first meet one of the “yous” in the film’s opening scene.

Actor Anne Hathaway recently paired up Nicholas Galitzine for the feature The Idea of You. It seems their age gap won’t be ignored in the feature, and will actually be a driving force in the movie.
But what does Hathaway feel about a romantic film where she’s more than a decade older than her onscreen counterpart?

Hathaway’s Amazon Prime romance The Idea of You sees her working alongside Nicholas Galitzine for the first time. Hathaway plays a mother in her 40s who has a chance encounter with a global pop superstar, which leads to an unexpected turn of events. One of the most talked-about topics in the highly anticipated adaptation was the age difference between Hathaway and Galitzine.
The age difference presented in the film isn’t entirely uncommon.

There are lithe, low-level pleasures to be had in the glossy pop romance The Idea of You, Amazon’s latest attempt to turn a fanfic fave into a broadly alluring date movie. The Idea of You, the latest film from The Big Sick director Michael Showalter centres around a passionate, if a little vanilla, age-gap relationship between a forty year old divorcee from LA and an internationally renowned boy-band singer in his early twenties.
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine are Solène and Haze, two star-crossed lovers who after a meet-cute at the Coachella music festival – she is there to chaperone her teenage daughter and her friends, while he is headlining the main stage – can’t seem to get enough of each other. In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

The Idea of You should never work as well as it should, but the rom-com does. A whimsical tale full of heart, Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine is an addictive, often hilarious, and meaningful addition to the genre that has made a comeback of late. This is an old-fashioned effort that swoons the audience’s expectations to its heart’s contents.
That’s mostly because it rides the back of its leads, whose chemistry should come with a warning because they burn up the screen. Despite the 12-year age gap between them (and it helps Hathaway has the same ageless disease Paul Rudd finds himself afflicted with), you never question the differences because the script is upfront and honest by never letting us forget them.
The Idea of You gets ahead of the elephant in the room early, and often, that slowly fades away.

Anne Hathaway built a strong portfolio in Hollywood with her leading roles in almost all genres. Like any other actor, Hathaway had her fair share of insecurities as an actress. Her fears peaked right after filming Love & Other Drugs, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal. However, they lasted only for two weeks as she got the call for the film One Day. Hathaway shared that her worry came with the territory of being an actor, where a lot of things were beyond her control.

Anne Hathaway Says “Instant Audience Love” For ‘The Idea of You’ Feels Similar to ‘Princess Diaries’
Anne Hathaway is reflecting on her emotional reaction to first screening The Idea of You at SXSW earlier this year, and how the reception to the rom-com reminds her of the reaction she received to The Princess Diaries in 2001.

Last year, the whole world was amazed by the storyline of Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, a legal drama about a writer trying to prove innocence in her husband's death. It demonstrated the potential toxicity of not only the failed relationship, but the world around us, when people get blamed for crimes even when there’s not enough proof.
There is a 2019 movie of the same genre, telling a similar story, but on much a larger scale. Its plot revolves around Robert Bilott, the real-life environmental attorney, known for the lawsuits against the chemical company DuPont after they contaminated the whole town in West Virginia with unregulated chemicals.
This premise seems to be boring enough to put you asleep with a bunch of pretentious speeches about the need to defend our ecology. However, this drama is not only going to keep you awake, but closely follow the DuPont case.

During a recent game of Pop Pop Quiz with Anne Hathaway on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer remembered the words to her own song but forgot she was the one who sang it.

Review: Whether you like it or not, we live in an era when fan fiction can be turned into big-screen feature films. From Twilight grew Fifty Shades of Grey, and both franchises made a lot of money for their producers. The popularity of boy band-turned-solo artist Harry Styles has been transformed into a bestselling novel and now the feature film The Idea of You. When the trailer for The Idea of You first came out, many people mistakenly believed the rom-com is based on Harry Styles fan fiction. To be fair, it wouldn’t be the first time Hollywood looked to the One Direction singer for inspiration — Netflix’s After films, which are based on the books by Anna Todd, have direct roots in the author’s Wattpad fics about him.
But unlike After, The Idea of You (which premieres May 2 on Prime Video) was never fan fiction. Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, the film centers on 40-year-old single mom Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) who unexpectedly embarks on a whirlwind romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the dreamy lead singer of popular boy band August Moon.

The Idea of You, based on Robinne Lee’s novel of the same name, isn’t just about a woman falling in love with a pop star. Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom, gets involved in a passionate romance with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the 24-year-old lead singer of the boy band August Moon. Since the book’s release in 2017, there’s been criticism of the age-gap romance at the center of the story.. To some, Solène and Hayes’ relationship is problematic because of their age difference. The backlash resurfaced online ahead of the film adaptation’s release. “I think it’s so derogatory,” director Michael Showalter told TV Insider during SXSW about the age-gap criticism surrounding the movie. “As a director, I feel like I get to know every character in my movies, so I get to experience the emotions of everybody I get ...

Sad tear-jerker movies are something we all need in the moments of sorrow and pain to release all our negative emotions crying alongside the characters. They get even more tearful when complicated or even impossible romantic relationships are featured, like in Ryan Gosling’s The Notebook (2004) and Anne Hathaway’s One Day (2011).
These films obviously inspired last year’s drama that takes romantic struggle to a whole other level. It focuses on the relationship of the two childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who get separated by Nora’s emigration from South Korea.
A decade later, they try to reconcile via Skype calls, however, this attempt fails due to the personalities’ differences that developed during that time. Another decade later, they contact one more time, and this time Hae Sung intends to visit Nora in New York.
You can already guess how many essential issues this movie raises: the themes of emigration,...

Speaking to V Magazine, Anne Hathaway has dropped a hint that more Princess Diaries may be coming. “We’re in a good place,” is all she will divulge.

Despite their rom com-heavy résumés, Anne Hathaway and actor-turned-director Michael Showalter had never met prior to collaborating on the May-December love story “The Idea of You,” which bows May 2 on Amazon Prime Video.
