Like many children of the 80s, I have a soft spot for the 1985 adventure epic Ladyhawke. It’s directed by the great Richard Donner, with it coming just before The Goonies and Lethal Weapon, but after his time with the Superman franchise. Lavishly produced, it wasn’t a hit in 1985 despite having a top-notch cast that included the late Rutger Hauer (in a rare heroic role), Michelle Pfeiffer, and Matthew Broderick. While some might say the latter was rather improbably cast as an Italian thief in the Middle Ages, that’s not actually the weirdest thing about the movie.
Donner has a reputation for always choosing superb composers for his films. Just think about how iconic Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton’s work is for Lethal Weapon, John Williams’s Superman theme, Jerry Goldsmith’s work on The Omen, and Dave Grusin’s score for The Goonies. Yet, one score...

In a momentous event for music enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, Bonhams London is set to auction a piece of musical history that resonates with deep cultural significance – Eric Clapton’s 1974 000-28 Martin acoustic guitar. This revered instrument is not just any guitar; it’s the creative fountain from which flowed the timeless love song, “Wonderful Tonight.” The auction forms a part of the anticipated Rock, Pop & Film sale, scheduled for 12 June at Bonhams Knightsbridge, London, and carries an estimate of £300,000 – 400,000.
The significance of this guitar transcends its association with one of rock’s most venerated guitarists. It served as Clapton’s primary tool during the pinnacle of his songwriting and performance career in the seventies. “That guitar went everywhere with me,” reminisced Clapton. It was his companion in the creative process, contributing to the soundtrack of countless life milestones – from the joy of weddings to the solemnity of farewells.

David Sanborn, the six time Grammy-winning alto saxophonist who played at Woodstock, composed music for the Lethal Weapon movies, played in the SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands and worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to David Bowie, died Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications. He Was 78.
Sanborn’s music is often described “smooth jazz,” but he reportedly rejected that characterization, and one can see why. His lively, iconic sax solo on Bowie’s “Young Americans” is anything but. Sanborn preferred the idea that he “put the saxophone back into rock ’n’ roll.”
Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&b legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles,...

In 2021, Mdou Moctar told Rolling Stone, “My music is going to become more inspired by revolution.” That promise was truth in advertising. When it comes to iconic moments in rock history, one can include the Beatles’ rooftop concert, Jimi Hendrix’s literally incendiary set at the Monterey International Pop Festival, the 1973 Kool Herc party that helped launch hip-hop — and, of course, Alice Cooper and the chicken.
In September 1969, Cooper, not yet a household rock-weirdo name, was on the lineup of the Toronto Rock N Roll Revival, a festival that brought together two generations of rock stars. Pioneers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley were on the bill, sharing the day-long...

The Clash are the touchstone for a story that stretches back to the 50s, told in interviews with many campaigning rockers
There’s no better time than now for a documentary on popular music’s role in the fight against racism and fascism. And in true punk spirit, this lo-fi indie packs in a lot of history and righteous passion for not much budget – even if, to be brutally honest, its core narrative is a very minor part of that history, centred on a bunch of ageing Clash fans.
The Clash are very much the touchstone here. Motivated by musicians such as Eric Clapton echoing the National Front’s racist and anti-immigrant sentiments, Joe Strummer and co became key players in the Rock Against Racism movement in the late 70s, alongside acts including Steel Pulse, Tom Robinson and Aswad. (The 2020 doc White Riot lays out the story in more detail.

Pattie Boyd was the subject of love songs by both George Harrison and Eric Clapton. She married each musician and collected piles of love letters from them. Recently, Boyd decided to place several of these letters up for auction. Here’s why she came to this decision and the amount of money the items are expected to bring.
Pattie Boyd has compiled her love letters from George Harrison and Eric Clapton
After years of carefully storing photographs and love letters from her time with Clapton and Harrison, Boyd has decided to auction them off to the public.

In the 1970s, Pattie Boyd lived the unique experience of having two rock stars, George Harrison and Eric Clapton, fight over her. She married Harrison in 1966 and soon, Clapton began expressing interest in her. According to her, the two men were emotionally immature. They dealt with the complicated situation in the only way they knew: by having a guitar battle.
Pattie Boyd said George Harrison and Eric Clapton were immature
By the time The Beatles broke up, Boyd and Harrison’s relationship had reached a rough patch. He treated her coldly and was far more interested in his spiritual development than in their marriage.
“My diary is full of entries about my unhappiness and the disintegration of our relationship,” she wrote in her book Wonderful Tonight. “On July 24 it simply says, ‘Silence reigns and my cheeks get wet.’ I felt so helpless.”

Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.

In The Beatles, one of George Harrison’s biggest problems was the way John Lennon and Paul McCartney treated his songwriting. They had been the primary songwriters for the first half of the 1960s. When Harrison started contributing more songs, they seemed to view it as more of an intrusion than an opportunity for growth. According to Harrison, they hardly paid any attention to what would become one of his best-known songs.
George Harrison said John Lennon and Paul McCartney didn’t take 1 song seriously
While Harrison was at his parents’ home, he began using books to write a song.
“I decided to write a song based on the first thing I saw upon opening any book — as it would be relative to that moment, at that time,” Harrison said in The Beatles Anthology. “I picked up a book at random, opened it, saw ‘gently weeps’, then laid the book...

The Beatles’ songs from A to Z are a study of how the band changed the course of pop music. The songwriting, melodies, instrumentals, and recording technqiues established the band as among the most influential in music history. But for all their success, The Beatles remained active for a relatively short period of time.
In 10 years, The Beatles released 14 albums in what’s considered their core catalog. It includes just over 200 songs from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Some are much more memorable than others, but every Beatles song from A to Z has its own story and interesting facts to keep listeners entertained even when the music stops.

He doesn’t ask much, he just wants you…to stop using his music. Ozzy Osbourne is coming after Kanye West for using a version of Black Sabbath classic “War Pigs” despite never receiving permission to do so. Ozzy apparently refused to lend the track to Kanye, citing the controversial rapper’s anti-semitic remarks. Come on, Ozzy, maybe Kanye just couldn’t read the response?
Ozzy took to X to write that Kanye West “Asked Permission To Sample A Section Of A 1983 Live Performance Of “Iron Man” From The US Festival Without Vocals & Was Refused Permission Because He Is An Antisemite And Has Caused Untold Heartache To Many. He Went Ahead And Used The Sample Anyway At His Album Listening Party Last Night. I Want No Association With This Man!”

When Robbie Robertson and The Band performed their final concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in November 1976, it was clearly an ending for the group, as expressed in the title of the 1978 film Martin Scorsese made about the event, “The Last Waltz.” While that movie — by virtually any imaginable criteria, the greatest rock and roll film ever made — documented a farewell, it itself represented a new beginning: a collaboration between Scorsese and Robertson that would last nearly 50 years and yield an astonishing series of masterpieces including “Raging Bull,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and most recently “Killers of the Flower Moon,” for which Robertson — who died last August at the age of 80 — posthumously scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.
Robertson’s work in “Killers” is the apotheosis of his partnership with Scorsese, a score that exhibits the passion, variety, and depth of expression familiar from Robertson...

George Harrison was the most spiritual member of The Beatles and tried to incorporate his faith into his everyday life. Over the course of his career, both with The Beatles and as a solo artist, Harrison wrote songs about his spirituality. He was not behind one of The Beatles’ songs that he thought was good publicity for God, though.
George Harrison said this Beatles song was spiritual
In 1967, The Beatles released “All You Need Is Love.” John Lennon wrote the song after their manager, Brian Epstein, informed the band that they were to appear on the Our World broadcast. This was the first-ever live, multinational broadcast and allowed the band to get their new song to millions of listeners. They recorded the song in the studio with a number of other musicians.

In 1967, The Beatles performed “All You Need Is Love” on a live broadcast. The song was a swift success for the band and became an anthem for the summer of its release. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. The band ran into copyright issues following the discovery that producer George Martin included a song that was not in the public domain.
The Beatles ran into trouble over ‘All You Need Is Love’
“All You Need Is Love” includes elements from several songs, including “La Marseillaise” and the 1939 song “In the Mood.” The latter eventually became a problem for the band.
“In arranging it, we shoved ‘La Marseillaise’ on the front, and a whole string of stuff on the end,” Martin said in The Beatles Anthology. “I fell into deep water over that. I’m afraid that amongst all the little bits and pieces I used in the play-out (which...

Frank Sinatra was the odds-on favorite to be the big winner at the inaugural Grammy Awards in 1959, but — perhaps as an early indicator that things wouldn’t always go to plan at the Grammys — ‘Ol Blue Eyes lost out on both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The music industry’s most recognized awards were established in 1958 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States.
The first Grammy ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, with only 28 categories, a number that since has swelled past 100 and now settled at 91. It was attended by many of music’s elite. Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Gene Autry, Johnny Mercer, Henry Mancini and André Previn gathered for a black-tie dinner and awards presentation inside the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton.

As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas was approaching, Dave Kaplan —whose Surfdog Records released the haunting album in 2011 — was pondering ways to honor it. A late-period landmark for Campbell, who died in 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Ghost on the Canvas found the venerable pop-country singer and guitarist covering songs by a new generation of writers — alt-rock types like Paul Westerberg, Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, and Teddy Thompson. The album ranked Number 88 on Rolling Stone‘s list of...

George Harrison let another rock star use the guitar that Eric Clapton played on The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” What an honor! That rock star used the guitar on another classic song. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a beloved tune but it was never a hit in the United States.

“I just miss Robbie, period,” says Martin Scorsese, talking about a professional and personal relationship with Robbie Robertson that lasted 47 years. “The friendship, the work, the tales he told — all of it.”
Although the filmmaker has already declared his intentions to shoot a new project in 2024 — an adaptation of “A Life of Jesus” by the late Japanese author Shūsaku Endō — Scorsese still has his head very much in his darkly poetic “Killers of the Flower Moon” and the late, great musical collaborator and friend who composed its haunting score.

For reasons yet to be explained, a super Pac supporting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.‘s presidential campaign falsely advertised a forthcoming fundraiser featuring a performance from famed Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and several other celebrity guests.
At the end of December, the Daily Mail reported — citing unspecified “organizers” — that Kennedy’s campaign would throw a “multi-million dollar” fundraiser later this month for the anti-vax candidate in Indian Wells, a resort town in the California desert. Supposedly, this event would also double as a birthday party for the independent candidate, who turns 70 on Jan.
