After 41 seasons as the host of Wheel of Fortune, longtime host Pat Sajak retired from the gig Friday June 7. He made the announcement that Season 41 would be his last in the summer of 2023, and Ryan Seacrest is set to take over.
Alongside Vanna White, who will remain on the show to flip letters in the puzzles, Sajak has become known in his time shepherding the show for his reactions to guesses and specific contestants.
Here are five memorable moments that occurred as Sajak’s retirement approached, all notable for different reasons.
Unnoticed Bonus Round Puzzle Giveaway
In April 2021, Sajak let sip the answer to a bonus round puzzle in his comment about the status of the hints. The contestant, Jeffrey, didn’t even notice, and he didn’t guess the phrase right either. Jeffrey had _ _ _ te _ran_l_ to guess after he had guessed his allotted 4 letters. The answer was “quite frankly,...

Vanna White just said goodbye to Pat Sajak after their final Wheel of Fortune game together. Pat’s final day to host the show was Friday, and Vanna had the chance to say goodbye on Thursday. However, Vanna isn’t leaving the show and will return to work with Ryan Seacrest next season. However, her future is not guaranteed.
Here is what needs to happen for Vanna to remain with the show into the future.
Vanna White Has To Prove Something On Wheel Of Fortune
Vanna White said she chose to remain on Wheel of Fortune after Pat Sajak’s retirement because she still loves her work. She will be back with Ryan Seacrest next season, and fans will still see her turning over letters on every episode. However, what happens after next season depends on one thing.

As Pat Sajak faced the Wheel of Fortune puzzle board one last time on Friday, June 7, his successor as host, Ryan Seacrest, marked the “end of an era.” “Pat, congratulations on an incredible run with Wheel of Fortune!” Seacrest wrote on Instagram on Friday, alongside a photo and a video of the two of them hanging with Wheel of Fortune cohost Vanna White on the set of the syndicated game show. Pat Sajak hosted his final episode of Wheel of Fortune on Friday, June 7. The episode had a lot planned. Vanna White gave her touching goodbye to Pat on Thursday’s episode, and Friday was time for Pat to say goodbye to the fans. This meant a jam-packed finale.
Pat said that there was a lot to take care of, including time for him to say goodbye at the end. As a result, Pat had to speed things up, which he said meant he had to “rob” the contestants of time during the episode.
Pat Sajak ‘Robs’ Wheel Of Fortune Players
Pat Sajak said that most people knew this was his final episode. This means that they needed time at the end of the episode for him to say a few words to the fans as he said goodbye. This caused one change to the game, which Pat agreed “robbed” the players who were playing.

Pat Sajak hosted his last episode of the popular TV Game Show Wheel of Fortune on June 7, 2024, after a 41-year run. Sajak, 77, has been the host of the widely-popular puzzle game show since it was on network daytime television in 1981. On the final episode of Season 41, he praised long-time co-host Vanna White, saying “Finally, to my professional other half, dear Vanna. Like me, she takes the show very seriously, but not herself.” Sajak and White have shared many memorable moments over the years. They won’t let Pat’s retirement keep them apart.
“While I’ll very much miss working with her, I take solace in the fact that we live about five miles apart, so we’ll see plenty of each other.”

Ryan Seacrest knows a thing or two about following in the footsteps of a legend. After all, he not only cohosted Live With Kelly and Ryan in a seat once occupied by Regis Philbin, but he also stepped into beloved TV personality Dick Clark’s shoes to emcee Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest. So you might think he’d take the idea of standing beside Vanna White as Pat Sajak’s replacement on Wheel of Fortune in stride. But no. “I’m like a kid, so excited about just seeing the set, you know,” he told the Today show about his new gig coming this fall. And he admitted to E! News, “Of course I’m nervous. I haven’t done it yet, so I’m terrified!” ABC/Disney Even so, Seacrest is no stranger to game shows. He’s hosted the singing competition...

Pat Sajak bid farewell to “Wheel of Fortune” on Friday night, but before he left, he had a parting gift for his final contestants on the show: $5,000 extra.
Before the first round of the night properly began, Sajak noted that, as everyone already knew, it was his final show. He added that he had some words he wanted to say before he left, meaning the game would cut one round of play to ensure there was enough time.
However, Sajak noted that “kind of robs you people,” so, to make up for it, he decided to spin the wheel himself and vowed to add an extra $1,000 to whatever he landed on for each contestant. He then proceeded to land on the $1,000 tile, meaning all three would get $2,000.
“You know what? It’s not my money,” Sajak teased. “Let’s give ’em all $5,000 right now. Little Jimmy’s surgery can wait!

Pat Sajak signed off of “Wheel of Fortune” on Friday evening after more than 40 years as host, telling viewers with a slight catch in his voice that he was grateful for the “incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night.”
The half-hour episode, recorded on April 5, was largely a regular telecast of the syndicated show with a few extra touches including Sajak’s four-minute farewell, or what he described as “a few parting thoughts.” But it opened with a clip of Sajak’s first appearance as host back in 1981, when the show aired on NBC’s daytime schedule before shifting to first-run syndication through King World Productions (which was acquired by CBS in 2000) in the fall of 1983. In the 1981 clip, the voice-over announcer introduces Sajak as the replacement for former host Chuck Woolery, who went on to host the dating game show “The Love Connection.”

It’s the end of an era on Wheel of Fortune, but it’s also about to be the start of a new one. Friday’s (June 7) episode of the series marks the send-off for iconic game show host Pat Sajak, who is leaving his spot on the stage after four decades, and next season, Ryan Seacrest will take over the enviable role. Seacrest has a great deal of experience emceeing reality shows after getting his start in kids shows like Gladiators 2000 and, of course, hosting American Idol since its inception. So when does his tenure at the top of Wheel of Fortune begin? Wheel of Fortune is expected to return for Season 42, which will be Seacrest’s first as the host, in September 2024. An official premiere date has not yet been announced, but Season 41 premiered on September 11, 2023, so it’ll probably be a similar timeline. Seacrest and Vanna White,...

Undeniably, Pat Sajak’s retirement from Wheel Of Fortune is taking a huge emotional toll on his beloved co-host, Vanna White. While there has been some time to absorb the idea of Pat leaving, the real event comes with a wave of difficult feelings.
Vanna White Takes Time To Look Back
As Wheel Of Fortune co-host, Vanna White, prepared for the exit of long-time host and “work husband,” Pat Sajak, there was no way to know how it would truly feel after working together for forty-one years. Undoubtedly, the week has been full of trips down memory lane. Admittedly, Vanna says she only remembers one fight she and Pat had through the years. She says innocently they can’t agree on whether ketchup should go on hotdogs. While bracing herself for tonight’s airing, June 7, of Pat’s “Final Spin,” she tries to pull together some words as they are parting ways.

With Pat Sajak’s final appearance as host of “Wheel of Fortune,” the makeup of a daily hour of television that structures the days of millions of Americans is shifting once more.
“Wheel of Fortune” is the low-pressure option of the two famous game shows invented by the late superproducer Merv Griffin. Unlike “Jeopardy,” it’s intended to be not aspirational but accessible, with simple word-puzzle games and a department-store glamour that comforts but doesn’t dazzle. And Sajak, along with Vanna White revealing the letters, has been at its center since relatively close to the beginning; he took over from Chuck Woolery in 1981, six years into the show’s run, and has since been honored by the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest continuous stint hosting a single game show.

Phrases like "the end of an era" and "TV legend" might be tossed around a bit too often these days.
But in the case of Pat Sajak and the end of his 43-year run as host of Wheel of Fortune, such descriptions couldn't be more apt.
As you've likely heard by now, Sajak is retiring from the show that made him famous, and Ryan Seacrest will take over when Wheel returns for its 42nd season in September.
Seacrest is well-suited to the gig, and while he's got some very big shoes to fill, we're sure he's up to the task of introducing prize puzzles and selling vowels.
But it's unlikely that he'll ever be regarded as an indispensable weekday night staple, as Sajak was for so many decades.
There are many reasons for this, and only a few of them have to do with the respective charms and talents of...

Then he got right to the game. One of the players, Joyce, was in the audience for ...

Like father, like daughter? Maggie Sajak made her TV debut in 1996 shortly after her first birthday when she toddled onstage during a Wheel of Fortune episode. She held her father Pat’s hand and babbled into his microphone — a natural on camera! Now 29, she serves as the series’ social correspondent (a post she’s held since 2021), bringing viewers behind the scenes and interviewing contestants on both the syndicated Wheel and ABC’s Celebrity Wheel of Fortune for after-show segments on social media. Maggie has also taken the Wheel stage, subbing for Vanna White in 2023 when White took over Pat’s job for a week. And when her father announced his departure after 43 years, speculation circled about the younger Sajak taking the game show’s helm. She won’t…yet. The new host will be American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest. TV Guide Magazine profiled Wheel’s graceful letter-turning icon Vanna White in the March 4, 1989, issue. At the time, the 32-year-old former model was pulling double duty working on both the daytime version (with host Rolf Benirschke) and nighttime iteration (with Pat Sajak) of the game show, starting her business empire — and charming everyone along the way. It’s leather week on Wheel of Fortune. At least that’s the way it seems. In the three shows just finished taping, every skintight outfit Vanna White wore was leather. “I’ll be out in just a minute.” It’s White talking as she disappears into her dressing room to squeeze out of a leather dress for supper. A minute, two minutes pass, then a startling, “Ok, you ready?” and there she is — cheerleader extraordinaire, adolescent fantasy in the flesh — dressed for dinner in a blue terry-cloth bathrobe. Sitting at one of the...

Pat Sajak is nearing the end of his run as the Wheel of Fortune host. However, he has just over a week left to have some more memorable moments in the series. One of those happened this week when a contestant proudly answered the puzzle and started fist-bumping the other players in celebration.
The problem is that his answer was wrong, and Pat had to call him out on it.
Pat Sajak Stops Celebration After Wrong Answer
In the recent episode of Wheel of Fortune, the players had letters on the board and had to guess what the term was. Every letter was there except for three (one in each word). The three looked at the board and then one player buzzed in and gave his answer.
The player then didn’t wait for the confirmation and began to celebrate his answer. More so, the other contestants also celebrated with him.

Wheel of Fortune always acknowledges its big wins… usually with lots and lots of confetti.
