One of the best, and rarest, feelings one can experience as a TV viewer is to watch a show and get the distinct feeling that its creators are getting away with something. That they're pushing buttons that someone asked them to avoid. That they're crafting imagery that's going to haunt and unsettle. That they're using a medium commonly associated with comfort and passivity to infuriate, baffle, and intrigue.
And across its four seasons, "Evil" has always felt just like that. Its first season, which aired on CBS, was a "Hannibal"-sized middle finger to decency and typical television sensibilities (that should be read as high praise). Later seasons moved to Paramount+, where the streaming wild west allowed showrunners Robert and Michelle King to really let their freak flag fly. The duo best known for "The Good Wife" were allowed to take every rule they learned while crafting a reliable network...

Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. Kurt Russell was born on March 17, 1951, in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks. He started acting at the age of 12 on various television programs. In the 1960s he was signed to a 10-year contract with Walt Disney, which led to his appearance in many of the Disney films of the era. According to the late Robert Osborne of TCM (via Wikipedia), he became the studio’s top star of the 1970s.
Those Disney appearances did typecast Russell a bit and he would be stuck playing many roles that were somewhat wholesome in nature. He would turn that image around when director John Carpenter (fresh from the surprise blockbuster success of “Halloween”) cast him in the lead role of Elvis Presley in a TV movie called “Elvis!” That television film was really the first time Russell was taken seriously as an actor and it earned him an Emmy nomination. We may not be ready to say goodbye to Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) and her friends, but we don’t have a choice.
Paramount+ has confirmed the upcoming fourth season of Evil will be its last.
The only good news from the announcement is that four additional episodes have been ordered to help bring the series to a close.
Many shows don’t get endings, but Evil has been one of those shows that beat the odds.
The procedural premiered on CBS in September 2019 and scored a renewal quickly despite soft on-air viewership.

“It’s hard to underscore the ability of Robert and Michelle King to cleverly craft thought-provoking stories that push creative boundaries time and time again, and Evil is no exception,” said David Stapf,...

Christine Lahti has joined the cast of Sarah Gancher’s Russian Troll Farm: A Workplace Comedy, set to open Off-Broadway this winter.
The Oscar and Emmy winner will portray Lubja, a supervisor of a professional troll farm who hands down increasingly specific asks to her subordinates, in the office comedy-meets-political satire opening at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre on Feb. 8. She will star alongside Haskell King, Renata Friedman, John Lavelle, and Hadi Tabbal in the play’s New York debut, directed by Tony winner Darko Tresnjak.
Set during the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, Russian Troll Farm: A Workplace Comedy explores what happens in a place where office romances abound and one employee who just wants to win a microwave mix with a concerted, collective daily effort to lie. Steve (Lavelle), Masha (Friedman), Nikolai (Tabbal), and Egor (King) are among the fictional employees of the Internet Research Agency, a real Russian...

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a feminist phenomenon that traces its origins to toy store shelves, dominated nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Its 10 nods makes the movie the second most-nominated in the 81-year history of the show, tying it with “Cabaret.”
“Barbie” was followed closely by “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s look at J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb, which scored eight nominations. “Oppenheimer” was released on the same weekend as “Barbie,” a rare confluence of blockbusters that inspired memes and, later, Halloween costumes, while turbocharging the box office.
Unlike the Oscars, the Globes honor the best of both film and television and steer clear of recognizing excellence in most below-the-line crafts like editing or cinematography. They also distinguish between film genres, recognizing the best comedies and musicals separately from the best dramas. Thus, “Oppenheimer” will compete for the top drama prize alongside “Killers of the Flower Moon,...

“Hollywood is mourning the loss of two of its own today,” the radio newscaster announced 30 years ago. My ears perked up, perhaps a bit more than the average listener’s would. “Federico Fellini,” he continued, “is dead at the age of 73.”
“Ah, well,” I thought. “He’s been ill for some time.”
“And in Los Angeles,” the newscaster said, “actor River Phoenix…” A sudden rush of adrenaline made my heart race and I felt as if I’d been punched in the stomach.
Five years earlier, I had spent the afternoon of River’s 18th birthday with him. At the time, I was working on a daily radio network program where I chatted with stars of new movies. Of the hundreds of actors I’ve interviewed, River easily made it to my personal “Top 10 Favorites” list.

Another TV shoot has been disrupted by striking writers, Michelle and Robert King’s supernatural drama for Paramount+ Evil, which has been filming its fourth season at Brooklyn Stages in Brooklyn.
“Evil has met its match,” veteran showrunner (and strike captain) Warren Leight wrote on Twitter at 1 Am Et Sunday alongside a video of three picketers walking in a small circle (you can watch it below). “Studio waited hoping they’d leave, because they didn’t want the headline that 3 guys walking for six hours shut the show down. But that’s what happened.”
Deadline has confirmed that no filming on Evil occurred Friday.
Writer Starlee Kane posted a photo of the trio with the caption “We Won,” reporting that the picketers “kept the crew there for hours, sitting on the sidewalk.” “We felt the solidarity. We’ll win this whole thing together,” Kane added.

Norman Steinberg, the Emmy-winning screenwriter who teamed with Mel Brooks on Blazing Saddles and My Favorite Year and wrote for the Michael Keaton-starring Mr. Mom and Johnny Dangerously, has died. He was 83.
Steinberg died March 15 at his Hudson Valley home in upstate New York, his family announced.
Steinberg also wrote Yes, Giorgio (1982), starring Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti in his feature acting debut, and co-wrote Funny About Love (1990), directed by Leonard Nimoy and starring Gene Wilder and Christine Lahti.
The Brooklyn native and former lawyer won his Emmy very early in his career, for his work on a Flip Wilson variety show.
His TV résumé also included developing Marlo Thomas’ 1974 landmark kids special, Free to Be … You & Me (he brought Brooks in on that); serving as a writer and executive producer on the first two seasons of CBS’ Cosby; and creating the short-lived CBS sitcoms Doctor, Doctor and Teech.

“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”
Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.
Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.
In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

Judd Hirsch is a living legend. Best known for his portrayal of cabbie Alex Rieger, the warm, principled central character of the classic sitcom "Taxi," Hirsch has been effortlessly segueing from television to stage to film and back again for over 50 years. He won two Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmys for "Taxi," and two Tonys for his performances in Herb Gardner's "Conversations with My Father" and "I'm Not Rappaport." He received a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1980 for his portrayal of the tough, yet compassionate psychiatrist Dr. Berger in Robert Redford's "Ordinary People." He probably would've won that year, but he was the victim of category fraud when Paramount opted to run his co-star, Timothy Hutton, in the Supporting Actor category rather than Best Actor, even though the young performer was clearly the lead of the movie. Hutton won, and Hirsch hasn't been nominated since.

A dozen years ago, Laura Linney became the fifth of seven actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories by winning Best Comedy Actress for “The Big C” two years after being honored for her work on the limited series “John Adams.” Following her unsuccessful Best Drama Actress bid for Netflix’s “Ozark” in 2021, she now has a second chance to blaze a trail as the first winner of all three Golden Globe awards available to lead TV actresses. Since her show has come to an end and she is up against a slate of category newcomers, she should now stand a better chance of standing out to voters and achieving this impressive feat.
Linney came up short in 2021’s drama actress race against “The Crown” star Emma Corrin, who has passed her role of Princess Diana on to current supporting nominee Elizabeth Debicki. Her other three former challengers...

More than a decade after becoming one of the few actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories, Laura Linney could now make history as the very first winner of all three prizes available to female small screen leads. Having already snagged the 2009 Best TV Movie/Limited Actress (“John Adams”) and 2011 Best TV Comedy Actress (“The Big C”) trophies, she may soon complete her trifecta with a Best TV Drama Actress victory for “Ozark.” Although she did lose on her first Golden Globe nomination for the Netflix series in 2021, she might fare better this time against an entirely new slate of challengers.
Based on her work as money launderer Wendy Byrde on the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” Linney is currently ranked fifth in Gold Derby’s Best TV Drama Actress predictions. She has a significant statistical advantage in that she would be the third person in a...

The Pitch: In the simplest of terms, "Evil" is a case-of-the-week procedural in the vein of "The X Files" or "Fringe." Only, instead of investigating unexplained phenomena for the FBI, forensic psychologist Kristen (Katja Herbers), Catholic priest-in-training David (Mike Colter), and tech expert Ben (Aasif Mandvi) are looking into potential supernatural encounters for the Catholic church, in order to see if they meet the criteria to warrant exorcisms. Evil Season 3 Episode 10
Evil season 3 ends at a crossroads with only one destination. According to The Pop-Up Book of Contemporary Demons, the chapter is both “The Demon of End” and “The Angel of Beginning.” This, however, is a subversion of the dark and light designations. The upcoming birth of a child is being celebrated. It appears to be the product of an inception so immaculate one might call it sterile. But, in an original twist on original sin, the child’s lineage goes straight back to Rms Fertility.
The episode opens in the direct aftermath of “The Demon of Money” conclusion, which saw the death of Monsignor Matthew Korecki (Boris McGiver). The camera doesn’t troll, but the episode expertly shows Leland’s (Michael Emerson) world getting smaller. It is by sheer coincidence, Grace Ling (Li Jun Li) didn’t recognize his face, and tells...

Evil, season 3 episode 9 “The Demon of Money” is an installment in motion. It begins in the therapeutic aftermath of a horrific incident and ends on a stunning, violent cliffhanger at the cost of a regular character, who we appreciate far more after the sacrifice.
The episode begins in Dr. Boggs’ (Kurt Fuller) office, where Kristen (Katja Herbers) is having a session on the traumatic scene she witnessed at the end of “The Demon of Parenthood.” All the audience saw of that grisly outcome was Kristen’s reaction to it, and that was enough to supply the terror to the ghastly horrors out of view. “The Demon of Money” supplies several reaction shots, often in tangent with the gore, which are as effective at pushing buttons as any of the frightening images.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Evil Season 3 Episode 5 “The Angel of Warning.”] Sheryl’s eyes have been opened to the world around her in a new way on Evil, and according to Christine Lahti, she’s ready to see what that means. In “The Angel of Warning,” Sheryl takes it upon herself to make sure the manager of the company knows that she’s the one responsible for their success with the cryptocurrency Makob, which means she meets him — and sees him as a horned, multi-eyed demon! When Leland (Michael Emerson) sees Sheryl, he can tell she’s been with the manager and has seen him the same way he does by the look on her face. (He congratulates her and offers his regrets for her promotion.) “Welcome to the team,” Leland says.

The 2021 winner Gillian Anderson and her “The Crown” costars Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell have all exited the series (which did not air new episodes during the current eligibility window). Aunjanue Ellis’s “Lovecraft Country” concluded in 2020, and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” for which Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, and Samira Wiley were all nominated last year, also did not return in time to contend at this year’s Emmys. Scroll down to see our 2022 Emmy predictions for Supporting Actress (Drama Series).
