There’s a story Alfred Hitchcock always liked to tell about how, when he was five years old, his father dropped him off at the local police station near his home in East London. William Hitchcock left a note for the coppers explaining that his son had been misbehaving. A policeman locked young Alfred in a cell for a few minutes and explained, “This is what we do to naughty boys.”
When Hitchcock recounted that story to Dick Cavett he was in his 70s, but the incident continued to leave a profound mark on the director. He said he was still “terrified of the police” because of that and drew a connection from that to the feelings of guilt and wrong-men-on-the-run paranoia that seeps into so many of his films.
The funny thing is, though, father characters are almost entirely absent from Hitchcock’s work. There are a few: Cedric Hardwicke...

Alfred Hitchcock is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers that has ever lived and his films have made a mark on filmmakers today. He has an unusual yet affecting way of inducing suspense and intensity in his films and his works like Psycho, Rebecca, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and The Birds are proof of that.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is one of his most acclaimed films
The latter is one of Hitchcock’ most audacious films and actress Tippi Hedren was the lead of the film. The director is known for his rigorous process of bringing his vision to life and this proved to be an excruciating experience for Hedren as she got pecked at by real birds following a last-minute switch-up made by Hitchcock.

Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

Zendaya stunned crowds in a chrome bodysuit pulled from a 1995 Mugler Couture collection for the Dune: Part 2 world premiere in London on Thursday.
The futuristic look, befitting of the movie in which Zendaya stars, featured shiny sleeves, gloves and pants set over clear plastic. She paired the outfit with a heavy diamond necklace.
Per Vogue, Mugler’s original Fall/Winter show “was memorable more for its performance by James Brown; its cameos by the likes of Tippi Hedren, Patty Hearst, and Veruschka; and its rather liberal use of fetishistic latex.” The description goes on to describe the collection as a “frightening and tantalizing image for the dawn of the Internet age, and a fitting end for this list of the nineties’ most unforgettable fashion shows.”

Dakota Johnson has just a few more days of press before Sony’s “Madame Web” arrives in theaters, but until then she’s speaking her mind.
Speaking with French outlet L’Officiel, Johnson talked about how her independent two-hander “Daddio,” co-starring Sean Penn, took far too long to find a distributor after its Telluride debut last fall. (The film eventually landed a release deal with Sony Pictures Classics and is due out in theaters this year.)
“People are just so afraid, and I’m like, ‘Why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave?’ It just feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid. That’s what it feels like. Everyone who makes decisions is afraid. They want to do the safe thing and the safe thing is really boring,” she said, clearly with little love for decision-making executives in Hollywood.

Catherine Breillat on Léa Drucker in Last Summer (L’Été Dernier) and Alfred Hitchcock’s heroine wardrobe: “I said to Léa, think about Vertigo and Kim Novak! But then I think she is more Tippi Hedren.”

The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) is celebrating the cinematic contributions of Oscar winner Alexander Payne, including his latest film, “The Holdovers.”
The Queens-based MoMI is curating a special Payne retrospective, culminating in a screening of “The Holdovers” with Payne in attendance on January 10. The exhibit kicks off January 5 with Payne’s feature debut “Citizen Ruth,” which was released in 1996. The independent dark comedy stars Laura Dern as a pregnant woman being used on opposing ends of the abortion debate.
“Alexander Payne has always put this country’s cultural, political, and emotional realities under a microscope — while never forgetting to also make viewers laugh,” the official MoMI press statement reads. “This rare talent, coupled with an enormous skill directing actors, many of whom give career performances under his watchful eye, has carried him through all his films, psychologically acute and often poignant inquiries into the lives of taciturn American...

Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic "The Birds" is a staple of Hollywood cinema, and it had to age a bit to earn its spot in the canon. The film only earned one Oscar nomination for special effects, but it is easily one of the most well-remembered works in the accomplished director's oeuvre. Almost half a century has passed since the film's release and many of its main actors are no longer with us. Most of them went on to have storied careers, some of them were already established figures of the entertainment industry, but unfortunately only two of them are still alive today.
Her character Melanie barely survives "The Birds," but Tippi Hedren is one of two stars in the film that has lived to see the 2020s. Hedren worked with Hitchcock again on his thriller "Marnie," but did not have much of a career afterwards. She did go on to...

After last year's paltry offerings, Horror Costuming is back in full force. Throughout October, the series will address the fantastic fashions of the undead and his bride, a monstrous metaphor born from Second-Wave Feminism, vampire chic, and more. Yet, before we get to the main courses, why not enjoy an aperitif? After all, though my writing can be protracted, even I would have trouble justifying the analysis of an entire movie's wardrobe when all that matters is one suit. Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds has become such an acknowledged classic and even cultural touchstone that it is easy to forget how revolutionary it was upon its 1963 release. For the Master of Suspense himself, it was a departure in many ways from his previous work while still a testament to his craft and devotion to “pure cinema.” It all but single-handedly created, or at least redefined, an enduring horror subgenre—the animal attack film. Finally, in creating this subgenre, The Birds explores themes of humankind’s place in the world and the unpredictable power of nature. It is also a particularly meaningful film for me as it was my first Hitchcock film and was introduced to me by my grandmother, who was a great fan of classic cinema in general and Alfred Hitchcock in particular. I saw the film during a memorable stay at her home when I was around...

The Netflix series "Wednesday" is unmistakably a Tim Burton production, but that doesn't mean that the show's distinctive look isn't inspired by other auteurs. In fact, one of the characters was modeled after a famous horror film by perhaps the single most world-renowned filmmaker of all time, Alfred Hitchcock. The controversial 1963 classic "The Birds" is full of Hitchcock's signature touches, from a looming sinister force to a fraught relationship between mother and son. But the piece of this natural horror that made its way into "Wednesday" was not the themes — it was the style.
When it came to crafting the visuals for the latest entry in the "Addams Family" franchise, costume designer Colleen Atwood knew she had her work cut out for her. The creative was tasked with paying homage to the iconic original looks that "Addams Family" fans know and love while updating them to fit the evolution...

This story about “Wednesday” costume designer Colleen Atwood first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When Colleen Atwood was a child, her parents had a Charles Addams sketch hanging on a wall in their home. So when the four-time Oscar winner was hired to design the costumes for Netflix’s “Wednesday,” she was well acquainted with the world of the amusingly macabre clan that Addams first created in comic strip form in 1938.
For Atwood, the challenge was to honor that legacy while bringing Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday and Pugsley Addams (plus Thing!) into the 21st century.
“My vision for the costumes was a contemporary connectivity feeling, for young people to see the Addams family as people, as opposed to cartoonish,” she said.

We have some sad news to share today, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that writer/director Manny Coto – who is best known for directing the 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) – has passed away at the age of 62, following a thirteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Manuel Hector Coto was born in Havana, Cuba on June 10, 1961, then his family emigrated to the U.S. just a few months later. Coto and his siblings were raised in Orlando, Florida, and he was still a child when a fascination with Star Trek inspired him to start shooting short films with his father’s 8mm camera. After attending college in New Orleans, he moved out to Los Angeles in 1983 and started working in commercials. Manny Coto, the Cuban-born writer and producer who received an Emmy for his work on 24 and spent four seasons on American Horror Story and two more on American Horror Stories, has died. He was 62.
Coto, whose childhood love of Star Trek and Super-8 moviemaking led to a 40-year career in film and television, died Sunday at his home in Pasadena after a 13-month battle with pancreatic cancer, a family spokesperson announced.
Coto also worked on the final two seasons of Upn’s Star Trek: Enterprise (2003-05) and on the final three seasons of Showtime’s Dexter (2010-13). Taking the reins on the former as showrunner in season four, he was called an unsung hero, creating a run of episodes that returned classic elements to his beloved franchise.
His “love of Star Trek permeated his life and his worldview,” his family noted. “In addition to being well-known for a spot-on William Shatner...

Dakota Johnson is most well-known for playing Anastasia Steele in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" franchise. The films, which are based on the book series of the same name by E.L. James, marked her breakthrough role as an actress. Since then, she's led so many other films like "How to be Single," "Suspiria," and "The Lost Daughter." Next up, she's set to join Sony's Spider-Man universe as the titular character in "Madame Web."
Dakota's success is unsurprising, especially considering her parents are famous actors, themselves. Her father, Don Johnson, has starred in hit TV series like "Miami Vice" and "Nash Bridges," while her mother, Melanie Griffith, rose to fame by appearing in films like "Working Girl," "Body Double," and "Something Wild." Not to mention, Dakota's grandmother is "The Birds" star Tippi Hedren, and her former stepfather is the award-winning Spanish actor and director Antonio Banderas. That's right. Acting...

The idea was to kill myself, not feed the damn fish.
Who is the most f***ed up character in Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964)? The answer is not as simple as it appears. The titular ice queen blonde (Tippi Hedren) is sexually frigid, terrified of lightning, a compulsive liar, a serial thief, and disassociates almost instantly at the sight of the color red. She has so many issues she's a full series of crazy. But while Marnie is a loner she's hardly alone in her own film when it comes to needing serious amounts of therapy...

The Birds officially turns 60 years old in 2023 from its release date on March 28, 1963. It’s an excellent film that blends dramatic stakes with Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful use of suspense, but does it belong in his top five most significant movies? It all depends on how we define that, which is why his longtime fans are only partially right that The Birds is a top-five Hitchcock film.

Hitchcock directed The Birds from Evan Hunter’s screenplay based on Daphne Du Maurier’s story. It follows a wealthy San Franciscan named Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) after she happens to meet the handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) in a pet store. She decides to follow him home to a small Northern California town with two love birds in hopes of striking up a romance. Suddenly,...

After the release of his 1960 masterpiece “Psycho,” Alfred Hitchcock received an irate letter from someone saying his daughter refused to take a bath after seeing Henri Clouzot’s 1955 thriller “Les Diaboliques,” which features a horrifying murder in a bathtub. And now she wouldn’t take a shower because of “Psycho.” What was he to do? Hitchcock wrote back the fuming father in his typical succinct and macabre style telling him to “send her to the dry cleaners.”
Undoubtedly, he received a lot of angry missives who saw his next film, “The Birds,” which celebrates the 60th anniversary of its release on March 28. In what is considered the Master of Suspense’s only horror film, “The Birds” finds feathered friends on the attack for no apparent reason. Let’s face it, six decades later if you see a large flock of birds gathering on a school’s jungle gym or malevolently peering down from trees,...

"Vertigo" is the kind of movie that lends itself to any interpretation you want to throw at it. Its multi-layered narrative has all kinds of things to say about love, madness, and obsession — particularly of the male variety. But what makes the film especially noteworthy in comparison to Hitch's other work, is how he so boldly confronts what one reviewer called his own "thematic and personal sexual fixations."
Hitchcock is known for obsessing over every aspect of his films. But he saved his most pedantic fixation for his actresses, who he seemed to revel in controlling. In the case of "The Birds" star Tippi Hedren, the director made the poor woman's life miserable. And his onscreen treatment of women wasn't much better. The heroines of Hitchcock movies are often little more than representations of the director's own myopic view of females. They're at once conniving and helpless — caught in the...

This post contains spoilers for "Vertigo."
Alfred Hitchcock liked to make things weird, and not just on-screen. He made things beyond weird for Tippi Hedren in "The Birds" and generally made a lot of actors uncomfortable, to say the least. He also managed to make some excellent films, with as sinister an aura as the man himself seemingly possessed. And believe it or not, part of his filmmaking prowess came from an ability to maintain an almost childlike approach.
There's something important about having a child-like perspective on art. Stan Brakhage wrote about it in his 1963 cinematic manifesto "Metaphors On Vision," in which he talks about an "eye unruled by the man-made laws of perspective." It sounds a bit pompous but the basic idea is anything but. Approaching something without any pre-conceived notions of what that thing should be can lead to real artistic achievement. Gwendoline Christie was given more than one “unbelievable opportunity” to work on Netflix’s new series “Wednesday”.
The actress recalled walking through a field when she received a text message from director Tim Burton who wanted to meet with her about the hit comedy-horror. She was later offered the role of Principal Larissa Weems and was even given the freedom to help design the character.
“[Burton] said, ‘You can do whatever you like with the character, feel free to make it whatever you want and we’ll keep talking about it,'” Christie told Entertainment Weekly. “And that was an unbelievable opportunity from this great cinematic master.”
Christie began to imagine who Weems- the leader of Nevermore Academy- might be as she worked alongside Burton and costume designer Colleen Atwood. The character is responsible for protecting a school full of outcasts, including the titular Wednesday Addams [Jenna Ortega].

It’s no surprise that Wednesday Addams is a popular Halloween costume each year. The elements are simple: a black dress, a white collar, and two braided pigtails.
If anyone’s up to the daunting task of updating such an iconic character’s fashion, it’s Colleen Atwood. The Oscar-winning costume designer, whose credits include “Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” pulled together a medley of creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and all-together ooky ensembles for Netflix’s “Wednesday.”
“With Wednesday, we can nail the iconic look right away with a nod to the original pointed collar, little print dress and modernized platform shoes, and then put her in an environment that she totally contrasts with: an American happy-time public school,” Atwood tells Variety of her reverence for the macabre teen’s original outfit. “Then you’ve given the nod to all that’s come before.

Killing Eve‘s Sandra Oh, Kieu Chinh (Dynasty) and Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen (Paris By Night) are set for key recurring roles in The Sympathizer, a drama series adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, produced by and co-starring Robert Downey Jr.
The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States.
Described as a “blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping spy novel and a powerful story of love and friendship,” the novel is hailed as a new classic of war fiction and has been compared to the works of Kafka, Orwell, and le Carré.
Oh will play Ms. Sofia Mori, a liberated feminist who in the midst of a love triangle begins to awaken to the complexity of her own Asian American identity.

Sean Connery needs no introduction. His career in television and film spanned nearly 50 years and encompassed a wide range of beloved characters and projects. Known for his tall, rugged appearance, Connery got his start in theater productions, TV shows, and films throughout the 1950s, getting his first big break as Bond, James Bond, in 1962's "Dr. No," the first silver screen adaptation of the classic spy from Ian Fleming's novels. The film introduced the world to Connery's rough yet charismatic persona and was successful enough to kick off a franchise that continues today. Connery appeared as Bond in six total series installments, and his outings as the character established the paradigm that all subsequent Bond actors would follow to various degrees.
Connery's place in cinematic history would be secure even if James Bond was the only character he portrayed. However, he was a versatile actor and managed to avoid being typecast,...

Jamie Lee Curtis had the support of her family and close friends as she imprinted her hands and feet in cement at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Oct. 12. The 63-year-old icon attended the ceremony with her husband, Christopher Guest; daughters Annie and Ruby Guest; and their respective spouses, Jason Wolf and Kynthia. Dozens of costars and associates were also in attendance, including Melanie Griffith, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kyle Richards, and producer Jason Blum. The event took place one day after the "Halloween Ends" world premiere, where Curtis walked the red carpet with her two children.
After an acting career spanning more than 40 years, the honor is long overdue for Curtis, who made her film debut in the first "Halloween" horror film in 1978. During the ceremony, Schwarzenegger spoke to Curtis's ongoing legacy and versatility. "There's a lot of stars here in Hollywood that have maybe one hit or two hits.

Loosely based on Daphne du Maurier's classic horror story, "The Birds" remains one of Alfred Hitchcock's most popular films. The manic action scenes are still a visual feast for modern audiences that have mostly been raised on Michael Bay explosions and the CGI-heavy fight choreography of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When hundreds of bloodthirsty birds attack the small Northern California town of Bodega Bay, it looks and feels truly terrorizing. Hitchcock famously used real birds that actually attacked the actors in an effort to make a fairly ridiculous natural phenomenon appear a little more believable to the movie-going audiences of 1963.

The movie: "Postcards from the Edge"
Where you can stream it: HBO Max
The pitch: Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Carrie Fisher, "Postcards from the Edge" follows actor Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) as she deals with substance abuse issues that land her in rehab. In order to keep her contract with a film studio, Vale must stay sober and live with her mother. The problem is that her mother is Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine), a former Hollywood A-lister with a love for liquor. Much like Fisher's relationship with her own mother, Debbie Reynolds, Suzanne and Doris love one another but have almost zero understanding of or sympathy for each other. Suzanne just wants out from beneath her mother's shadow, while Doris doesn't understand why her daughter can't just behave and put on a good show.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit The Birds II: Land’s End, the direct-to-tv sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic that aired on Showtime back in 1994.
Man. The Birds II: Land’s End was a bad idea.
Even in 1994, we all knew that it was a bad idea.
Not many people remember, but back in the nineties, the Showtime cable network was heavily based in science fiction. They aired and promoted shows like “The Outer Limits,” “Poltergeist,” and “Stargate SG1,” among many others. When the time came to air The Birds II: Land’s End, it seemed like a natural fit, and the channel gave it a massive PR push, with previews, behind the scenes, and retrospectives. They even aired it alongside the original Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece. Lo and behold, when it premiered, it was greeted with a large, collective groan.

Although Alfred Hitchcock once famously said that "actors should be treated like cattle," the director may have actually been searching for on-set sheep. In other words, an animal that would be just as easy to herd around, but nevertheless wouldn't get too worried or agitated. Though Hitchcock was quite demanding, he also make it a point to avoid conflict on set — and one of his strategies to maintain the peace especially resonated with Cary Grant, who starred in several of Hitchcock's films.
While speaking to Interview, Grant recalled that Hitchcock would always attempt to diffuse tensions on set by reminding crew members that at the end of the day, the work they were doing wasn't all that high-stakes:
"A film's a film. As Hitch would say when someone would get all upset on the set, 'Come on, fellas, relax—it's only a movie.'"

It's no secret that Alfred Hitchcock was a controlling director. Not only did he famously call actors cattle, Hitchcock also had no qualms about misleading studio executives in order to make "North by Northwest," a passion project. Simply put, Hitchcock was cunning and skilled enough to get his way — and made it known when he didn't.
But despite the director's track record, there was one thing he couldn't control: cats. While the animals likely would've made a great addition to Hitchcock's pictures — after all, they're stereotypically sly animals and would feel right at home in a suspenseful Hitchcock thriller — he was simply unable to master the art of cat-whispering.
In an interview with fellow director François Truffaut, Hitchcock revealed that he had initially planned to have around a hundred cats lounging around a gang hideout in "Number Seventeen," a comedy thriller that was made relatively early in the so-called master of suspense's career.

No animals were harmed in the making of “Beast.” Frankly, it doesn’t look like any animals were even used in the making of “Beast,” but if you can get past the idea that the two-ton lion threatening Idris Elba and his family in the movie is a singularly frightening combination of ones and zeros, not killer instinct and claws, then “Beast” is a blast.

One of Alfred Hitchcock's most beloved films also happens to be one of the most technically challenging productions; in the days before CGI, orchestrating a creature feature was a daunting task — but not too daunting for a filmmaker known for pioneering storytelling techniques. "The Birds" is Hitchcock's thrilling 1963 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's 1952 story of the same name, concerning a series of sudden, violent bird attacks on the people of the sleepy seaside town of Bodega Bay, California.
A collection of interviews with the Master of Suspense dropped in 2003, containing a fascinating conversation between the director and Bruce Lane about the training involved with the feathered antagonists. The script called for birds to orchestrate mass assaults, dive at windows and, in one of the most impeccably-constructed suspense scenes of all time, assemble and attack schoolchildren. Hitchcock credits good trainers and good old movie magic for the stupefying result:

Daphne du Maurier's unsettling horror story, "The Birds," was the inspiration behind Alfred Hitchock's 1963 horror-thriller film of the same name. Hitchcock effectively utilized the premise of violent, inexplicable bird attacks to underline the themes of love and violence and how the two were connected within the context of the narrative. The onus of bringing this unique story to life fell on Tippi Hedren, who plays Melanie, the protagonist whose presence becomes an inadvertent threat to those around her.
"The Birds" was Hedren's screen debut and according to the actor, the process of working alongside Hitchcock was not a pleasant experience. Hitchcock himself had made the harsh proclamation that "all actors should be treated like cattle" — a statement that was corroborated by the way he treated Hedren while filming "The Birds" and 1964's "Marnie." Hedren details the alleged assault she had faced in her memoir, "Tippi," explaining how Hitchcock's obsession...

There have been plenty of difficult directors over the years, from Hitchcock pelting Tippi Hedren with live avians in "The Birds" to Kubrick and his hundreds of takes on "The Shining." Sam Peckinpah infuriated Charlton Heston so much that the actor brandished a saber at him, while William Friedkin fired real guns on the set of "The Exorcist" to keep his actors suitably on edge. Few modern filmmakers, however, have the tyrannical reputation of James Cameron, self-proclaimed King of the World.
A notorious egomaniac and fierce taskmaster, Cameron may just have the biggest balls in Hollywood. Who else would make a blockbuster about the Titanic so he could explore the actual wreck site? The stories of hardship on his movie sets are the stuff of cinema legend, from threatening, to firing crew members for taking bathroom breaks, to nailing their cellphones to the wall if they ring during a take.

When Citizen Ruth was released on Dec. 13, 1996, director Alexander Payne never expected the abortion debate at the center of his feature directorial debut to remain relevant 25 years later.
Payne, who would go on to win the best screenplay Oscar for his films Sideways and The Descendants, had yet to work on a feature when he and then-roommate Jim Taylor spotted a New York Times story about a pregnant woman in North Dakota who was arrested for drug use and drew support from both sides of the abortion argument. The writing partners saw this as fodder for an acerbic comedy, and penned the script in which a tug-of-war ensues between anti-abortion and abortion-rights activists who target the titular woman — a recently impregnated addict who along with her drug arrest is charged with endangering the life of a fetus — as a means of advancing their personal causes.

Years after the film franchise wrapped, most people still associate Dakota Johnson with her leading role as Anastasia Steele in "Fifty Shades of Grey.". But like many actors, she didn't just suddenly spring up on the scene with this career-defining moment. She worked her way up through a slew of supporting roles prior to landing that plum part.
Johnson's path to leading lady success seemed guaranteed as a third-generation Hollywood actor (her grandmother is "The Birds" star Tippi Hedren). In fact, her first role was handed down by her actor parents. Johnson's film career started in 1999 when she was just a child,...

"The Birds" is a classic movie, but if you go back and watch it in the context of Alfred Hitchcock's filmography, it's also somewhat bizarre, even by his standards.
Most of Hitchcock's best-known films are tales of murder and madness that could be classified as crime thrillers or works of psychological horror. "The Birds" is a full-on monster movie. Yet it's one that has a slow build around a series of inscrutable and not entirely relatable characters, led by Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), a San Francisco socialite who's had her name in gossip columns and who's not above going to elaborate lengths to carry out a practical...
